no way Joey talking about anime lol
not even on his main channel too
It's an SSR pull, im here for it
😱
no way the anime man talking abt anime
I miss Let's fight, monthly otaku collection and what i will be watching
Joey, if you uploaded this as it is on your MAIN CHANNEL, without any more editing, and literally the same effort into the title and description of the video, people would stop bullying you about not talking about anime on the "The Anime Man" channel. The war would stop.
I completely agree, it's by owning who he actually is, our pretentious anime boy, that he will find the greatest success imo
Tbf I don't think he even cares about it anymore, at the very least it doesn't look like he wants the 'Anime Man' title but just accepts being recognized as such.
The video is uploaded either way, not sure why you're obsessed with it being uploaded to his other channel.
@@TheSlithice Imagine going to a channel called The Anime Man and expecting anime content damn bro that's crazy
Nah, people would then complain saying he has no business doing anime content
Dude there's a new Mononoke movie coming up and I literally can't wait for it, loved the video btw ^^
Yooo I've seen the trailer for the new Mononoke and I'm hyped! What a classic . I wasn't expecting a older classic to be brought back, but I'm here for it . I'm surprised Joey hasn't talked about it yet. I finished Mononoke on Netflix . It's very good.
I wish they would make an entire season 2 of it it's so good and underrated
Hope it’ll be in cinemas overseas
@@foregroundeclipse8725 It spun off from an anthology show called Ayakashi: Samurai Horror Tales, so if you want to watch some more, you should check out the last three episodes of that show.
Edit: You might know this already, I'm just guessing you haven't based on the fact you saw it on Netflix.
I've heard very good things about mononoke but haven't watched it yet
Do y'all know what it's streaming on/where I could watch it? (I live in the US)
Suggestion: When you make these sort of vids discussing various anime, I'd suggest you ask your editor to include clips of some of the shows you talk about, just so viewers who've never seen the anime will at least some idea of what the show looks like visually. It'd add a lot to the viewing experience imo.
Or at least show the name, and maybe say it in English.
“Hey I think you should do an *insane* amount of work for the least engaged viewers”
that's why pretentious, you should already know the op and ed by heart
How Joey massacred Ergo Proxy is beyond words. Apart from that, it's sad that we are not getting stuff like Ergo Proxy or Serial Experiments Lain nowadays.
everytime someone destroys ergo proxy my lifespan increases by 6 months.
Ergo Proxy is the most preachy pretentious poorly paced overrated MEH aniem ever.
i adore SEL
(which is a S++ , 11/10 masterpiece) and apparently both SEL and EProxy is made by the same key individuals which boggles my mind.
@@btchiaintkidding7837 Some people should not be allowed to have opinions
Its dog water fam
@@btchiaintkidding7837 They have a different director and writer, they are made by different studios. So I don't know about that
I plan to rewatch it. It's certainly not the most entertaining anime. A lot of philosophy talk and religious background.
But it's at least good and it's very unique, which makes it better than just good. Certainly better than just okay.
Full list:
Absolute favourite: Bakemonogatari (and presumably all the other Monogatari series besides Katanagatari as that's got its own entry in the list)
One of a kind: Legend of the Galactic Heroes, Mononoke, From the New World, The Tatami Galaxy, Ping Pong the Animation, Princess Mononoke, FLCL (first one), Serial Experiments Lain, Clannad (+ After Story), Perfect Blue
Amazing: Monster, Cowboy Bebop, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Samurai Champloo, Wolf Children, Attack on Titan, My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU/Oregairu, Katanagatari, Hyouka, Gurren Lagann, Mushishi, K-On!, Aria, Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinju, March comes in like a lion, Made in Abyss, Girls' Last Tour, A Silent Voice
Great: Toradora!, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure , Code Geass, Non Non Biyori, Welcome to the NHK, Madoka Magica (TV series only), Fate/Zero, Steins;Gate, Gintama, Nichijou, Re:Zero, Mob Psycho 100 (first 2 seasons, though doubt the ranking would drop even with S3), Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid, Your Name., Land of the Lustrous, Bunny Girl Senpai, Grand Blue, Violet Evergarden, Fullmetal Alchemist (the image used is Brotherhood, with discussion regarding of it being at the top of lists so would assume that entry over 2003 FMA), Kaguya-sama: Love is War, Revolutionary Girl Utena, Sound! Euphonium
Good: The Devil is a Part Timer, Your Lie in April, Symphogear, KonoSuba, Anohana, Overlord, Penguindrum
Okay: Ergo Proxy, Texhnolyze, Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works (ufotable adaptation), Yuru Yuri, One Punch Man, Tsukigakirei, Darling in the Franxx, School Live!, That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime/Tensura
Mediocre: My Hero Academia, I Want To Eat Your Pancreas, Zombie Land Saga, The Promised Neverland
Bad: Goblin Slayer
Dogshit: N/A
No opinion: Hunter x Hunter, Flip Flappers, Tsuredure Children, A Place Further than the Universe/Yorimoi, Hitoribocchi no Marumaru Seikatsu, Revue Starlight
You are doing god's work mate 🤝
You're a Messiah bro. Thanks! Here's your 🌸
Katanagatari isn't related to Monogatari at all, it's just the same author
From the new world was awesome. My poor rat babies. Monster, eva and code geass are my top 3 probably i enjoyed them so much.
Only thing I’d change is JoJo in one of a kind considering how old and iconic it is, also the manga for part 7 and 8 are really really good
This whole video is a giant like a giant list of anime recommendations on shows I might have missed out on over the years. Man, videos like these take me back to the 2010s- the start of my anime journey. Good times.
Angel's Egg
Balladona of Sadness
these are two other shows that definitely should have been on this list(for positive reasons), watch these too
@@btchiaintkidding7837 Added to the list, boss. Kanashimi no Belladonna looks trippy. Might watch it this week when I have time since it's only an hour and a half.
Cuz most of those shows are 2010s or 2000s shows and Joey watched most of those anime
I'm curious, you said you prefer Weathering with you over Your Name (I did too), but what did you think of Suzume?
There will never ever be another anime like FLCL. The newer FLCLs don't count. They have no heart and soul and only try to bank on the name alone. FLCL is a good vibes anime. Incomprehensible plot but deep meaning. Animators experimenting and animating in different styles and mediums. It's an art for art's sake anime. Or animation for animation's sake masterpiece. Definitely a one of a kind anime.
I know it gets clowned a lot but Fireworks are they flat or rounded?
That movie that was hyped and turned out people enjoyed only the song
I think that movie tried to do exactly what you said
Art for art sake incomprehensible plot but deep meaning
And vibes shut up don't think absorb the vibes
Obviously it didn't succeed on the scale like flcl but in my opinion it did a decent job with that assignment and I enjoyed it even though apparently I'm the only one everyone else hated it
When I watched it the incomprehensible plot made me not find any meaning in it, so I didn't like it
Well its fun but its not deep
Flcl has the most entertaining animation
I watched a few episodes and I didn't like it at all, I thought it was too chaotic and had just amazing animation for the sake of it. Why ever recommending it to anyone but to people who are suckers for drawing and animation? I think the others really don't have much to get from it and that it's a pretentious anime which doesn't care about giving space to characters and story as it's too busy throwing random stuff at you.
When you just gave the Monogatari series the thumbs up, I paused & took it outta fullscreen to give this video a nice thumbs up too. 👍
You could also post stuff like this on main channel, would be a welcome addition.
Last one that you didn't know was Revue Starlight.
Shouldn't this be on "The Anime Man" Channel.
low amount of editing for the normal channel, feels low effort for his standards
Anime? On The Anime Man channel?
Where's the logic in that?
So many good recommendations on this list! I stopped watching anime for a while since having a baby so this list is perfect to get me back into it and revisit some older titles that I heard of before but never got to watch. I had never heard of Shin Sekai Yori but will definitely watch!
Love the video Joey keep up the awesome work and videos
Loved this! Joey should make more videos like this it's nice to see some refreshing anime content
more anime content from Joey? damn we eating good
Texhnolyze is so underappreciated. It's peak. It's slow, but there's nothing as raw and bleak in the entire medium, so unique. One of the best endings of all time as well.
That anime left me depressed. The nihilism on display was really overwhelming.
Haibane Renmei is my favourite Yoshitoshi ABe series. I always wanted more but, well, Yoshitoshi ABe.
And i also loved that guy with a moustache that came from above and started gang wars just to see what would happen 😭😂 bro was a menace just for the fun of it
@@DP-mv7ph Makes perfect sense when you consider that he came from a world so boring that everyone just wandered through life in a daze
Ive read a theory that the city of Lux is supposed to represent Babylon and at the end its supposed to be like the ninth circle of hell where they all freeze in place but idk how good that theory is 🤷♀️
I’m surprised you put Mononoke on one of those shows because it is in my all time favorite anime list! I can’t tell you how excited and pumped I was for what would happen next. I have never been on the edge of my seat for an anime since Symphogear. Thank you for recommending it to me!
You're surprised? Even though mononoke is THE Joey anime? I know and love mononoke because of Joey.

There’s some opinions I disagree as always. But I’m sorry, weathering with you is no where near as good as your name 💀
same for me. The 3 Blockbuster Shinkai, I think Weathering with You is the weakest, though I think the Radwimps songs for that is the strongest.

No. But I could have added that it has its dedicated fans. Some people really seem to like it.
Having been in the anime sphere for 10+ years and not having watched a lot of these makes me realize I need to go back to watch these. As Glass reflection would say ''watch more anime''
Just started watching Shinsekai yori recently. It hits differently for sure. Looking forward to where it’s going
reading through and finishing Girls Last Tour left me empty and listening to Dark Ambience for hours on end wondering why it had to end in the first place. It killed me
I’d really appreciate if you wrote the titles on the screen! I’m still kinda new to anime and I don’t know what you’re saying, so I can’t search for them to watch/read!! ❤
One of the top comments listed out all the titles, hopefully it helps
Joey! When will the results from the top anime survey come out?
Monster and Mushi-Shi getting love brought me so much joy!!! That and all the wonderful things you said about FLCL.
As soon as i saw the ANIME man upload a video about ANIME and have SENJOUGAHARA at the top of the tierlist i knew i had to watch it 😭😭💯🔥
I'm happy I recently watched the Monogatari series because it's now my all-time favorite. Absolute masterpiece.
Surprised Vinland Saga and Death Note didn't make the list
That's not pretentious, is normal
They are really normie friendly.
not pretentious at all
Dont think vinland saga is normie at all. if MHA and OPM can be on this list, so can Vinland Saga
Fullmetal Alchemist is the most basic choice, so Death Note and Vinland could have been in the list as well
@@lisace5916 100% agreed. i mean so many ppl disagree on season 2's quality because of its more seinen approach.
You have no idea how long I have waited for this man to recommend Hyouka. It is truly such an underrated masterpiece. Thank you joey.
I think it's like the first anime I watched fully on TH-cam
Here in Asia we have muse Asia which uploads legally licensed shows
This was truly amazing and basically the poster child of why I think jjk is mid
Sure for shounen standards jjk is a great show but in the grand scheme of anime overall when underrated shows like hyouga and girls last tour Aquatope on the white sands babysitting club this season jellyfish can't swim at night
Arte
Etc
Jjk is mid
I think it’s old, rather than under rated. It’s also by Kyoto Animation, so it’s not like no one knows about it.
there isn't a single anime episode in existence that I have watched more times than Hyouka episode 19. It's just 2 people, sitting in a room doing nothing but talking for 25 minutes but it's just so incredibly engaging because of the contents of the talk aka their theorizing and their character dynamic, and I'll take something like that over the "most hype fight of the century" (that's gonna get dethroned about a month after) *_any_* time I have the choice
Man I wish they animated more of it 😭😭
@@Che1seabluesdrogba11 Same. I was like, “that’s how it ends? I need more!”
Wheres Belladonna of Sadness, Angels Egg, Ghost in the Shell, and Jin Roh. That would be perfect for a list like this
Imma be real with you dog, Belladonna and Angel's Egg are pretentious AND objectively bad. The only people who I could see enjoying them, don't enjoy those movies as movies, but as philosophy study material to autistically obsess over. Ghost in the Shell goes from mediocre to great depending on which of the 18 different releases you're talking about. Jin-Roh is just meh
@@simonchasnovsky1835 Don't get me wrong I agree with you. A lot of them give off that "modern art" vibe kind of like how people will look at a banana taped to a wall and call it a masterpiece. I just wish they were on the list cuz they are fun to talk about.
Ghost in the shell and GIT SAC are some of the most celebrated mature anime one could think off. Jin Roh is nice too. Newer anime fans seem to be more into childish cute stuff or unrealistic drama to obsess over to nearly incomprehensible levels.
@@EximiusDux agreed. Even modern shows like Vinland Saga which modern anime fans label as mature barely stands a chance to how mature a lot of the older stuff was like. Vinland feels like an imitation. Im not trying to gate keep by saying that. I know a lot of people will disagree with that take and I respect that
@@simonchasnovsky1835 Oh yeah, totally. I watched Belladonna and Angel's Egg because I love philosophical anime, but I did not end up liking them; I half fell alseep during Angel's Egg and I did not enjoy it, Belladonna on the other hand, while was a little better and I did enjoy it to a small extent, it still was just not to my liking. They are more so like a form of art, rather than the part of entertainment medium.
Was definitely happy to see K-On! on here, it was the first music anime I got into being a musician myself and I completely agree with Joey's takes on it. It was such a great show and definitely had its funny moments but the best part of the series imo was the music and every time I still listen to the OST it still makes me wish I could come up with riffs like that because those fucking slap and is up there with Beck (criminally underrated series, it was so good) and Bocchi (from when I watched it last year) as some of the best music anime
K-ON is the biggest W
The fact that list has shows like Aria The Animation and Sound Euphonium in the mix already catches my attention. 😁
You're smashing it, keep it coming!
8:28 W take. Shinsekai yori is one of those animes that really stick with you. There's many great or amazing shows/anime I've watch that I love but Shinsekai yori is one of the few that sticks with me for a long time and I see remember the feels I had while watching it.
This is the vid I been waiting on❤
Joey, if you end up coming across this comment
I recently watched for the first time Tamako Market and Tamako Love Story, both by Kyoto Animation. I really enjoyed them way more than I expected and if you haven't seen them I'd highly recommend.
All around, actually pretty good takes on your list here. Happy to see you enjoying the memories of these shows as you went through them.
I get your opinion on My Hero, but give it another chance. I personally gave season 1 a 6/10 when I first watched it. But every season since I have given around a 9/10.
MHA is one of the very few shōnen that i care for, but even i have to say the 1st season without the context of the next seasons feels pretty meh. It doesn't explore the hero society yet, so i understand how Joey isn't that excited for the story.
Same here, I'm usually not a shonen lover but MHA has something special to it
Quite the opposite for me, after watching many shonen over the years , MHA is pretty standard with very little unique aspects. it just takes the usual formula and does it well(most of the time).
HxH is that "special" shone for me personally.
Monogatari Series yes, also my Favorite. I am right now in Japan for studying, to somehow reach my dream of translating the light novels in my native tongue.
I try to explain some of the wordplay as well. Its gonna be a life long activity and I am all here for it.
most based comment
Tatami Galaxy is one of my faves! Which is why I gotta point out it was by Madhouse. Tatami Time Machine Blues is the one by Science Saru.
33:07 "it wasnt as amazing as people made it out to be" me watching The most beautiful anime ever video where he called it amazing in the first week of its realease.
Off the top of my head, series seriously missing from this list:
- Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
- Lucky Star
- Honey and Clover
- His and Her Circumstances
- Genshiken
- Azumanga Daioh
- Kara no Kyoukai
- Uchouten Kazoku
More famous shows like Durara or Black Lagoon seem to be pretty conspicuously missing, too, since there are many similar level shows there too. Even Suzumiya Haruhi should be included, I think.
Boogiepop too
Stand Alone Complex is the best GitS series. The first movie is good, but it felt incredibly rushed.
Shiki too
Genshiken lover, great taste especially if u read manga
Youio Senki

Doesn't know Revue Starlight as what. An amazing anime. One of the greatest endings I've ever seen.
I disagree with a lot of Joey's opinions, but all is forgiven due to his W takes on Monogatari, K-On, 3-gatsu no Lion and CLANNAD.
I've seen more anime than most of my friends so it's always nice to see a list and have watched maybe half of it before and Joey comes out and hasn't seen 6 of them.

It was really cool to see your takes on some of these shows you haven't talked about in a while, even on the trash taste podcast! As for my personal favorite, its gotta be gurren lagann. Love your content, Joey.
Pancreas is my favorite anime film of all time but i havent seen the other versions of it so i respect your take
What makes hyouka special to me is the friendship dynamic between Satoshi and Houtarou. Satoshi takes everything up a notch with how much information he can provide, how he knows the protagonist, Houtarou, inside out and the complexity of his character as a whole. He is always there to do something for Houtarou whenever he is about to trip on his own feet. Houtarou also holds his own ground quite well with how he tries to come to terms with his feelings about his lifestyle, mostly thanks to Satoshi and Chitanda, and his deductive capabilities which let him come up with the most plausible answers to all the mysteries that challenge him.
On the flip side, the girls Mayaka and Chitanda fall short compared to the boys since Mayka is too hung up on herself to actually look inside others' heart and all Chitanda do throughout the story is showing how feminine she is and starting things saying she is curious except in those two moments where they each shake up their boy with one punchline later in the story. The girls' purpose is just to stir things up and make the story more engaging because the boys act too mature. I have to say though, they are more realistic compared to the counterpart.
Just as The Anime Man said, the quality is the last thing you need to worry about.
It is such a rare gem where the story does not dive too deep into something but have the right dose of everything that stay faithful to slice of life, word by word.
I feel like Death Parade shoulda been here I can’t explain why but I feel it’s missing.
Such a fantastic short anime with a banger opening.
I don't think Death Parade is considered pretentious enough to be a Reddit fave

Ohhh, now that you mentioned it.. Ergo Proxy had a banger soundtrack - now that's something I'm gonna listen to for the next weeks 🔥
Oh shit. The Anime Man lives.
How can you have a pretentious list without Planetes?!
That’s for sci-fi fans buddy
I just watched Cowboy Bebop recently and this is the most surprising old school thing for me. I think Cowboy Bebop is so far ahead of its time. It told a complete story while being an episodic show and written 20 yrs ago? Wow !!!
I would recommend checking out KINO'S JOURNEY on that note (the older adaptation tho from 2003, not the new one) if you haven't, it didn't perticular tell one complete story by being episodic but it's one of the most underrated Light Novel Adaptations from the past -
Joey please do more anime tier lists!
I'm going to see the monogatari series now thnx for some recommendations Joey AKA the anime man
Complete ass take Girls Band Cry, BangDream, and Bocchi are not trying to replicate K-On at all they have completely different tones and stories not just from K-On but from each other.
and they're not as good as K-ON so moving on
@@mikhaelmadriaga5457apples and oranges.
I personally think K-on and Bocchi are both equal in quality but I think both are overrated but I love Girls Band Cry.
Are they all about young female musicians starting bands? The answer is yes. Is K-on the best of that genre? Maybe, maybe not, that’s down to personal taste, but they are all of a similar genre. Is there anything to see here? No, walk on.
@@uremawifenowdave slice of life with barely a focus on music, gag comedy about coping with social anxiety more about the actual band, angsty starving artist drama very much so about the actual band.
So yeah very difficult I guess Gundam, Gurren Lagaan, 86, and Evangelion are more or less the same show as well because teenagers pilot mechs?
I hate to admit it, but this anime list is fire. Not everything on it is a masterpiece, but many are and I don't think there is one bad anime here. I'm not sure there are more than a handful I would personally rate worse than good, and there are more than a few that I would put on my list of all time favorites or in the one of a kind tier.
Most of them are great or at least very good, but some are very overrated or absolutely not my taste. Technolizxe, Bunny Girl Senpai, ...
Surprised Baccano wasn't on the list (Please watch Flip Flappers, it's so good)
I have not seen half the entries on this list, which is weird seeing as I have seen close to 500 Anime titles. I think it might be because most of the ones I haven't seen came out in the past 10 years, and I don't watch that many shows each season.
Not pretentious, so much as refreshing. It's nice to see a tier list of Anime i've actually watched. a lot of recent anime, and safe classics, often smother out some cult favourites. I like that the list had a bit of everything, and Joey has continued to prove his excellent taste. Also, shout out to the Houseki no Kuni Manga; The animie is actually a trailer.
Rewatched the anime with a friend the other day and it's definitely a trailer, well said. Silently praying for season 2 😢
Expecting Joey to not rate MHA low is like expecting to snow in early summer xD most of the list is good doe, it's kinda hard to fit things in the lower half of the tier-list when all the shows have been chosen on the basis of how pompous can a redditor be about his anime taste xD
Great timing joey I’m going for a shower and I have seen all your vids and all the trash taste +garnt x2 times 🙏

I got halfway through season 3 of Romantic Comedy SNAFU and i still have no idea what the characters are talking about most of the time or what is going on
ergo proxy was awesome, wtf u smoking bro
I liked it quite a bit when I saw it when it was first coming out, but I could see why people wouldn't like it. It's one of those slow-paced, contemplative, somber sci-fi anime that was popular from that time period.

When was this recorded ??
It makes me think like 2020

Joey has been isekai'd into anime tier lists.
The anime man is back againnn! MONOGATARI W. THIS IS WHY I LOVE JOEY. This also the final push i needed to watch LOTGH. Watched almost everything else
Ok i’m not agree with a bunch of rankings and it’s ok. But Monogatari series on top is just facts. Safe to say I watched this video just to see it getting praised once more.
Although Joey didn't watch Revue Starlight, I am still glad to see that it is on the list. What a hidden gem!
Especially the movie is a fucking masterpiece, one of the most visually stunning thing I've seen in the media.
Oh man I’m so glad to see joey recognising the greatness of hyouka it’s extremely underrated and not to say kyoani doing wonders with the adaptation along with the ost is just the cherry on top also the fact that it came out almost a decade ago but still looks better than most of the stuff that we get today is mind blowing to me.
Joey back to discussing anime wow rare lol
I’m so confused I thought Joey and Garnt have been saying Fullmetal alchemist brotherhood is overrated. 🤔
No matter what anyone says about FMAB, there’s this thing about it where you just cannot deny its legacy. In my opinion, it’s an anime series that’s aged well. (And the remake was more loyal, that ticked the boxes for me)
I think it’s over rated, but it’s still the best typical shonen I’ve watched.
You don’t know the concept called “plays devil’s advocate”?
Yeah its overrated, but not like its bad. Its overrated in a sense comoared to how other people rate it, but its not bad in any means
Garnt didn't watch fmab it's kinda of joke for him saying it is the best.
