Monogatari Series yes, also my Favorite. I am right now in Japan for studying, to somehow reach my dream of translating the light novels in my native tongue. I try to explain some of the wordplay as well. Its gonna be a life long activity and I am all here for it.
26:13 saying bocchi the rock and girls band cry are replica which trying to replicate K-ON are just disrespect with ignorance. Joey might not even watching those anime and he has the track record of talking from his ass when he didn’t even watch those shows and just took others’ opinions. Those animes he mentioned here are very different than K-ON. Especially girls band cry is more realistic than K-ON. Those animes have different touches and charms from other angles
8:28 W take. Shinsekai yori is one of those animes that really stick with you. There's many great or amazing shows/anime I've watch that I love but Shinsekai yori is one of the few that sticks with me for a long time and I see remember the feels I had while watching it.
MHA is one of the very few shōnen that i care for, but even i have to say the 1st season without the context of the next seasons feels pretty meh. It doesn't explore the hero society yet, so i understand how Joey isn't that excited for the story.
Quite the opposite for me, after watching many shonen over the years , MHA is pretty standard with very little unique aspects. it just takes the usual formula and does it well(most of the time). HxH is that "special" shone for me personally.
It was actually the opposite for me. I enjoyed season 1 but I ended up dropping it after the second season. It just feels like there's nothing special going on for it.
Off the top of my head, series seriously missing from this list: - Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex - Lucky Star - Honey and Clover - His and Her Circumstances - Genshiken - Azumanga Daioh - Kara no Kyoukai - Uchouten Kazoku More famous shows like Durara or Black Lagoon seem to be pretty conspicuously missing, too, since there are many similar level shows there too. Even Suzumiya Haruhi should be included, I think.
Imma be real with you dog, Belladonna and Angel's Egg are pretentious AND objectively bad. The only people who I could see enjoying them, don't enjoy those movies as movies, but as philosophy study material to autistically obsess over. Ghost in the Shell goes from mediocre to great depending on which of the 18 different releases you're talking about. Jin-Roh is just meh
@@heat.death_999 Don't get me wrong I agree with you. A lot of them give off that "modern art" vibe kind of like how people will look at a banana taped to a wall and call it a masterpiece. I just wish they were on the list cuz they are fun to talk about.
Ghost in the shell and GIT SAC are some of the most celebrated mature anime one could think off. Jin Roh is nice too. Newer anime fans seem to be more into childish cute stuff or unrealistic drama to obsess over to nearly incomprehensible levels.
@@EximiusDux agreed. Even modern shows like Vinland Saga which modern anime fans label as mature barely stands a chance to how mature a lot of the older stuff was like. Vinland feels like an imitation. Im not trying to gate keep by saying that. I know a lot of people will disagree with that take and I respect that
@@heat.death_999 Oh yeah, totally. I watched Belladonna and Angel's Egg because I love philosophical anime, but I did not end up liking them; I half fell alseep during Angel's Egg and I did not enjoy it, Belladonna on the other hand, while was a little better and I did enjoy it to a small extent, it still was just not to my liking. Are they all about young female musicians starting bands? The answer is yes. Is K-on the best of that genre? Maybe, maybe not, that’s down to personal taste, but they are all of a similar genre. Is there anything to see here? No, walk on.

So many good recommendations on this list! I stopped watching anime for a while since having a baby so this list is perfect to get me back into it and revisit some older titles that I heard of before but never got to watch. I had never heard of Shin Sekai Yori but will definitely watch!
Was definitely happy to see K-On! on here, it was the first music anime I got into being a musician myself and I completely agree with Joey's takes on it. It was such a great show and definitely had its funny moments but the best part of the series imo was the music and every time I still listen to the OST it still makes me wish I could come up with riffs like that because those fucking slap and is up there with Beck (criminally underrated series, it was so good) and Bocchi (from when I watched it last year) as some of the best music anime
What makes hyouka special to me is the friendship dynamic between Satoshi and Houtarou. Satoshi takes everything up a notch with how much information he can provide, how he knows the protagonist, Houtarou, inside out and the complexity of his character as a whole. He is always there to do something for Houtarou whenever he is about to trip on his own feet. Houtarou also holds his own ground quite well with how he tries to come to terms with his feelings about his lifestyle, mostly thanks to Satoshi and Chitanda, and his deductive capabilities which let him come up with the most plausible answers to all the mysteries that challenge him. On the flip side, the girls Mayaka and Chitanda fall short compared to the boys since Mayka is too hung up on herself to actually look inside others' heart and all Chitanda do throughout the story is showing how feminine she is and starting things saying she is curious except in those two moments where they each shake up their boy with one punchline later in the story. The girls' purpose is just to stir things up and make the story more engaging because the boys act too mature. I have to say though, they are more realistic compared to the counterpart. Just as The Anime Man said, the quality is the last thing you need to worry about. It is such a rare gem where the story does not dive too deep into something but have the right dose of everything that stay faithful to slice of life, word by word.
I hate to admit it, but this anime list is fire. Not everything on it is a masterpiece, but many are and I don't think there is one bad anime here. I'm not sure there are more than a handful I would personally rate worse than good, and there are more than a few that I would put on my list of all time favorites or in the one of a kind tier.
Any anime fan needs to watch monogatari series. Truly nothing like it, I even picked up the light novels after enjoying the show and they're somehow even better
Kinda self-fulfilling with the MHA fanbase outrage. Out of all of the animes, it's the only one that you mentioned the fanbase on. Like, what do you think they are going to do when you are singling them out and talking down to them? It's fine that MHA isn't your thing, they aren't going to care. Just say "I got through the first season, and it just wasn't for me. It's played very safe, almost nostalgic of old Shonen, but unfortunately that means that it feels like I've seen it already". No need to mention the fandom or people just in their own corner doing their thing. No need to associate them with being 14 years old. No need to attack them or berate them. They are just people enjoying their own thing. I know this isn't going to do anything, but it's so tiring going through the same motions again and again. Feeding off the same animosity. At some point the cycle must break.
You are taking this a little bit too seriously man. "It's so tiring going through the same motions again and again. Feeding off the same animosity. At some point the cycle must break" is so hilariously over the top that I wouldn't be surprised if you pulled it verbatim from MHA. If the fanbase are still immature enough to get riled up at a pretentious nerd talking about them for a few seconds 30 minutes into a video, his words are probably not that inaccurate.
@@Evan_SchaeferingIt's more me commenting on the state of victimhood in social media. Not just in anime, but...well, just a pick. Sports, religion, politics, games, movies, food, everyone is just riling everyone up, making comments without understanding, generalized statements, and then being surprised when they get a reaction. If people feel attacked, they will defend. That defense will be seen as an attack, cycle repeats until one side is just like "This is stupid", and stops. That's what I want. I want that cycle of victimhood to break. I want people to start thinking about how they can present a critical argument without personal remarks. And I'm tired because I see the exact opposite. Endless petty drama, grudges, and ad hominem. Good luck having a nuanced conversation about Israel and Palestine, or the complex state of China. In Joey's case, he's holding a grudge. There was no reason to mention the fandom. When you watch the show, you aren't watching the fandom. It doesn't have an impact on the story, animation, or sound. It was a personal attack with no actual meaning. It was pointless.
I just watched Cowboy Bebop recently and this is the most surprising old school thing for me. I think Cowboy Bebop is so far ahead of its time. It told a complete story while being an episodic show and written 20 yrs ago? Wow !!!
I would recommend checking out KINO'S JOURNEY on that note (the older adaptation tho from 2003, not the new one) if you haven't, it didn't perticular tell one complete story by being episodic but it's one of the most underrated Light Novel Adaptations from the past -
Expecting Joey to not rate MHA low is like expecting to snow in early summer xD most of the list is good doe, it's kinda hard to fit things in the lower half of the tier-list when all the shows have been chosen on the basis of how pompous can a redditor be about his anime taste xD
38:20 DANG... my fav anime... I might agree in some ways with joey about the anime BUT the light novel just hits hard, it's a pretty good darkish dnd like fantasy anime, and I don't think I know a lot of anime/novels on the japanese side that have that nice dnd like feel , I mean if anybody knows of anything similar recommend it to me!
Not pretentious, so much as refreshing. It's nice to see a tier list of Anime i've actually watched. a lot of recent anime, and safe classics, often smother out some cult favourites. I like that the list had a bit of everything, and Joey has continued to prove his excellent taste. Also, shout out to the Houseki no Kuni Manga; The animie is actually a trailer.
Ok i’m not agree with a bunch of rankings and it’s ok. But Monogatari series on top is just facts. Safe to say I watched this video just to see it getting praised once more.
Now thats a pretty banging list, wouldnt change too much around myself except a few of course. It was really cool to see your takes on some of these shows you haven't talked about in a while, even on the trash taste podcast! As for my personal favorite, its gotta be gurren lagann. Love your content, Joey.
There's a lot of people with good taste that are pretentious. But unfortunately if you like something that's not mainstream enough, you may get called pretentious
Although Joey didn't watch Revue Starlight, I am still glad to see that it is on the list. What a hidden gem! Especially the movie is a fucking masterpiece, one of the most visually stunning thing I've seen in the media.
I'm calling it now, after watching S3 of Mob Psycho I'm inclined to think you'd upgrade it to "Amazing" tier. That last season absolutely hit, I cried at the end.
ha, I'm 61 and I am here taking notes for anime to watch. Def going to watch Shinsekai Yori and there's a dub because this old lady finds it hard to read those fast subs
Not enough people talk about the Snafu anime or Clannad: After Story. Absolutely two of my all time favorites, and the music for both add to the depth.
Oh man I’m so glad to see joey recognising the greatness of hyouka it’s extremely underrated and not to say kyoani doing wonders with the adaptation along with the ost is just the cherry on top also the fact that it came out almost a decade ago but still looks better than most of the stuff that we get today is mind blowing to me.
Another weird take from Joey about Bocchi the Rock. Bocchi the Rock is NOT trying to be like K-On! K-On! focused on "moe" stuff.(I'm honestly not a fan of that part) K-On!'s "plot" is so chill and slow to the point it's almost boring. For the story, Bocchi the Rock is much better. But I prefer the songs from K-on! over Bocchi the Rock.
disagree with your lie in april take, its amazing. you are not some outlier that was the only one that knew she was gonna die, most knew that, what was sad is that she died, not because it was a surprise, but simply because she did. an amazing person who saved kouhei, by getting him to love the piano again and also making him grow so that he doesnt regress when she dies, whom he loved, aswell as her just being an amazing person who deserved to live.
I’d really appreciate if you wrote the titles on the screen! I’m still kinda new to anime and I don’t know what you’re saying, so I can’t search for them to watch/read!! ❤
39:38 for this unfortunately thats only option in Grand Blue Fandom that is true. Because anime unfortunately is just ad for manga and it will never have second season
No matter what anyone says about FMAB, there’s this thing about it where you just cannot deny its legacy. In my opinion, it’s an anime series that’s aged well. (And the remake was more loyal, that ticked the boxes for me)
I've seen more anime than most of my friends so it's always nice to see a list and have watched maybe half of it before and Joey comes out and hasn't seen 6 of them.
He talks about Bocci the rock, so definitely after 2022, but he also said that FMA is at the top of MAL, so it's between 2 years old and 6 months old I'd say.
Why, though? In terms of humanity & existentialism, Ghost in the Shell does it better. In terms of nihilism & the human experience even Texhnolyze does it better. I get that Ergo Proxy might be a dear show to you, but it's not perfect by any means & many of us don't consider it 'peak', because the flaws outweigh the positives (imo). I get the appeal, but like... It's ok that not everyone finds it a 10/10 masterpiece, you know.
@filipdzero8739 GOTH is great, but Ergo is just better simply because there’s more material. It’s not really a fair comparison. Texhnolyze being better or not than Ergo is actually an interesting conversation, I think you might be on to something but I would say Ergo is more traditional as a story while Texh is more inventive. Both are great, but I’d pick Ergo. You’re missing my point though, calling Ergo “okay” is just criminal lol. You don’t have to think it’s 10/10 or peak (like I do) but man… lol
Joey, if you end up coming across this comment I recently watched for the first time Tamako Market and Tamako Love Story, both by Kyoto Animation. You have no idea how long I have waited for this man to recommend Hyouka. It is truly such an underrated masterpiece. Thank you joey.
I think it's like the first anime I watched fully on TH-cam
Here in Asia we have muse Asia which uploads legally licensed shows
This was truly amazing and basically the poster child of why I think jjk is mid
Sure for shounen standards jjk is a great show but in the grand scheme of anime overall when underrated shows like hyouga and girls last tour Aquatope on the white sands babysitting club this season jellyfish can't swim at night
Arte
Etc
Jjk is mid
I think it’s old, rather than under rated. It’s also by Kyoto Animation, so it’s not like no one knows about it.
there isn't a single anime episode in existence that I have watched more times than Hyouka episode 19. It's just 2 people, sitting in a room doing nothing but talking for 25 minutes but it's just so incredibly engaging because of the contents of the talk aka their theorizing and their character dynamic, and I'll take something like that over the "most hype fight of the century" (that's gonna get dethroned about a month after) *_any_* time I have the choice
Man I wish they animated more of it 😭😭

They are really normie friendly.

Tatami Galaxy is one of my faves! Which is why I gotta point out it was by Madhouse. Tatami Time Machine Blues is the one by Science Saru.
Same here, I'm usually not a shonen lover but MHA has something special to it
Quite the opposite for me, after watching many shonen over the years , MHA is pretty standard with very little unique aspects. it just takes the usual formula and does it well(most of the time).
HxH is that "special" shone for me personally.
It was actually the opposite for me. I enjoyed season 1 but I ended up dropping it after the second season. It just feels like there's nothing special going on for it.
Off the top of my head, series seriously missing from this list:
- Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
- Lucky Star
- Honey and Clover
- His and Her Circumstances
- Genshiken
- Azumanga Daioh
- Kara no Kyoukai
- Uchouten Kazoku
More famous shows like Durara or Black Lagoon seem to be pretty conspicuously missing, too, since there are many similar level shows there too. Even Suzumiya Haruhi should be included, I think.
Boogiepop too
Stand Alone Complex is the best GitS series. The first movie is good, but it felt incredibly rushed.
Shiki too
Genshiken lover, great taste especially if u read manga
Youio Senki
Wheres Belladonna of Sadness, Angels Egg, Ghost in the Shell, and Jin Roh. That would be perfect for a list like this
Imma be real with you dog, Belladonna and Angel's Egg are pretentious AND objectively bad.
They are more so like a form of art, rather than the part of entertainment medium.

43:12 Utena is my single favorite anime of all time, love the themes that it tackles, changed me for the better, helped me through tough times :)
K-ON is the biggest W
I disagree with a lot of Joey's opinions, but all is forgiven due to his W takes on Monogatari, K-On, 3-gatsu no Lion and CLANNAD.
I'm curious, you said you prefer Weathering with you over Your Name (I did too), but what did you think of Suzume?
I hate to admit it, but this anime list is fire. Not everything on it is a masterpiece, but many are and I don't think there is one bad anime here. I'm not sure there are more than a handful I would personally rate worse than good, and there are more than a few that I would put on my list of all time favorites or in the one of a kind tier.
Most of them are great or at least very good, but some are very overrated or absolutely not my taste. Technolizxe, Bunny Girl Senpai, ...

No. But I could have added that it has its dedicated fans. Some people really seem to like it.
People enjoying theor own thing is black clover fandom. not MHA
TBH, As a MHA fan I really don't care about this.
Can someone help me find the anime he mentions at 34:30 😅 having a hard time finding it, thanks (:

Another weird take from Joey about Bocchi the Rock.
Bocchi the Rock is NOT trying to be like K-On!
K-On! focused on "moe" stuff.(I'm honestly not a fan of that part)
K-On!'s "plot" is so chill and slow to the point it's almost boring.
For the story, Bocchi the Rock is much better.
But I prefer the songs from K-on! over Bocchi the Rock.

No matter what anyone says about FMAB, there’s this thing about it where you just cannot deny its legacy. In my opinion, it’s an anime series that’s aged well. (And the remake was more loyal, that ticked the boxes for me)
I think it’s over rated, but it’s still the best typical shonen I’ve watched.

19:18 throwing Ergo in okay is criminal, even no opinion would’ve been better after he admits he didn’t understand the story
