I love how this is a top 500 anime list and Joey is like "People must not have read the manga if they got this anime up here". Bro it's an ANIME list 😂
@@pandaeyez So what are we supposed to do? Wait 10 years and only then evaluate Frieren? We evaluate what we currently have and it is currently in 1st place. This list is not eternal
@@pandaeyez This is a favorite list, not a rating list. Frieren S1 was amazing and easy to see why people love it. Same reason Promised Neverland was even in top 500, for its awesome S1
WIth only 2000+ votes, a top 500 is spreading the votes pretty thin. It pretty much makes the distinctions between rankings statistically meaningless, at least at the low end.
I was one of these votes. You could vote for up to 20 anime. You had to rank them as well and the higher the rank, the higher the points it could get. 1st pick was 5 points, 2nd/3rd 4 points, until 10th getting 2 points. Anything at 11-20 gets 1 point.
this is incorrect, nothing is being spread thin at all. This isn't one man one vote, it's "Everyone pick their top 20 and the 500 most highly rated are featured". This list is basically showing the 500 most frequently favorited anime out of a maximum potential 40,000 anime which could have been named by the voters.
@@onijaanjonu3367 Based on the spreadsheet, only the top 6 got any points, so the 500 are based on about 12000 total ranked votes. Which is better than 2000, but still subject to recency bias.
Whenever I see the mostly forgettable & arguably mediocre shows having one person who put it as their all time favorite, it makes me happy. Someone out there found something so deeply resonant in a show that means absolutely nothing to me, and I can't help but appreciate that.
Yeah, and sometimes you like a show for how much it helped you through a certain emotional period of your life, even if objectively it isn't great. And sometimes, you just have weird taste. I think it's beautiful that people can see something so special in the same place others see mediocrity
Mediocrity is mostly someone's opinion anyways, except for cases like Ex-Arm. I dislike Frieren for a variety of different reasons, but others put the show as one of their absolute favorites.
Bruh Joey you literally read that its favorite list not objective rating and are still surprised when you see SoL/Trashy shows higher than "real stories" lol. It seems like you have forgotten who "weebs" are. Of course there are people who enjoy Date a Live more than Howl/Beastars/Little witch lol
As a former Date A Live fan myself, I can tell you that there’s a small group of superfans of the series that basically watch no other anime except Date A Live
Makes sense. :D I was into Date a Live when the first season came out and I was reading the light novel for some time. I laughed when I saw it on the list. I still say that the opening and the atmosphere of the beginning was great.
Yeah honestly, I remember watching the first season of Date a Live back in like my freshman year of high school or sometime around there, and honestly I really enjoyed it. Didn’t really go back to watch the any of the other seasons, but it’s cool see people still enjoy.
This is a FAVORITE list NOT a list where ppl list which anime is the best. Also Nostalgic bias plays as big of a role as recency bias, so idk why recency bias keeps being brought up when there as much old anime as new anime as well. No hate of course.
@null6406 There are many older series on here with only 1 season or 12-24 episodes. The length of a series does Not determine the quality of a series. Again, this is based on preference, not an objective list. If you say that anime with only 1 season can't be considered, then half the list is gone. While we are at it, remove the movies as well cause its only 1 entry.
@null6406 By this logic, you can’t like a show if you haven’t seen the whole thing. Just because I’ve only watched a few episodes of a show, doesn’t mean I can’t like it or even have it as my favorite
"nostalgic bias plays as much a role as recency bias" On an individual level sure. But when you factor in a ton of fans came into anime after 2019, the bias of people who've only seen newer stuff is definitely stronger
@@Ash_Wen-li Not really. You'll see large turn ups on either side online because the vast majority just simply do not care about Reddit, or YT, or anything else. The voters depending on which site or even subreddit may be different but overall it's about equal.

yeah Berserk 97 was solid, sure it's not as good as the manga, but Joey said it shouldn't even be on top 500?! That's crazy, I think maybe he's getting mixed up because of how bad the 2016 anime was.

@@mongeneral05 yeah, and it's such a shame too... the series has well executed themes, a great story with a solid sense of escalation and tension, parallels between a lot of the characters, which are well utilized to convey cohesive messages, excellent symbolism... there's a ton to dig into, but nobody in the west really gives it the time of day. ;_;

The 1st season was the weakest, since it really pushed hard to introduce and explain the characters and their whole schtick. The later season just do more interesting things, and go into the backstories of characters.
It surprises me Joey glanced over Chihayafuru. Started it recently, and it's a lot of fun to watch. Though I didn't expect it to be so high, since it feels relatively underground
I remember Joey saying that he loves Chihayafuru and that it's really fucking good, go through his anime man videos i think it was one of the myanimelist ones
He often posts collabs and japan-related content on his main channel because he puts alot more work into em and they get more views while he usually just talks into the camera about a topic on this channel. Not just that, Anime content is just so widely available that aside from Garnts seasonal rundowns and scripted essay-style vids, theres not much specific anime-related content that gets alot of views. Chris and Connor have both said it too that theres so much untapped content available in Japan and making vids of that and posting on the more relevant channel is probably a better decision overall.
,,Your favorite anime is not the best anime'' That's true......so why did you forget about it a minute later and you're rating it as a ranking list? This is a list of people's favorite anime, and not everyone has watched all the anime. You keep asking questions "Why is it higher than this one?" I don't know, maybe it's because the person hasn't watched the second title? Have you thought about it? I won't even mention how irritated I was with your approach to the slice of life anime. Is it so hard for you to understand that people might prefer pleasant and ordinary anime instead of complicated stories? Is it so difficult? I don't know how old you are, but you act like a child in this video who doesn't accept any other approach to anime
Yeah lol, man forgot who weebs are. Of course a weeb will like DAL more than Howls/Beastars/Little witch. Joey just had to say stuff for the video, since its really not possible to comment on a favorites list other than "People really love CGDCT huh". This wasn't an objective rating list
@@OskarL47 that’s true. I watched both and I found that Bocchi was a better told story. I don’t really have a preference for genre, but I would have not thought to make the comparison until Joey brought it up.
so what was he supposed to do ? actually going by that makes the video pointless . was he supposed to look at every anime and be like,"yeah , thats enjoyable" . like wat . obviously the point of the whole video was judging the anime taste like said in the beginning itself . half of the comments are the same shit smh
I used to agree with him all the time but now I usually disagree with every anime take he has :D (which is totally fine). Bocchi for example is so high because it is so "relatable". If I remember correctly one of the boys said "people like that don nt exist in real life, noone is that cringe". So yeah, that was clearly wrong if you look at the numbers.
Joey watches handful of anime a year and half of them he doesn't even finish, bro doesn't have the authority to talk about anime at all. I genuinely wish he would just ditch anime all together and made manga content cause he clearly is more passionate about it.
@@HyperKryst You don t need to watch anime to have an opinion on them. Especially finishing anime is not required at all. If the 1st like 3 episodes are bad then the whole show is usually bad. Why else would they put their worst quality in the front. Gintama is probably the only one that started bad but is sstill good.
Re zero is one of those stories where you are so heavily rewarded for both watching the anime and then reading the light novel. The novel has some of the best world building ever. There are 55+ side stories going from some characters back stories to some character's POV while the main story takes place to get to know their inner thoughts to crazy big revalations in the side stories(especially arc 6 onwards). Highly recommend people to go read it. Gives me the same vibes as going in for a deep dive in dark souls lore.
Ngl seeing some really underrated shows pop up, making you happy they get some recognition is much more enjoyable than Joey's straight up repetitive commentary imo
Josee, the Tiger and the fish it's not only my favourite anime movie but also one of my favourite anime in general (it's in my top 5 for shure). It's absolutely shocking that no one talks about it. This movie deserves so much more recognition.
I think it's alright for a favorite list. It's not an objective ranking or anything. Just what anime people like so I'm not surprised to see many slice of life and Iyashikei or just CGDCT being very high up.
The main issue is that people can only vote for things that they're familiar with. Some people have limited exposure to anime and give a strong bias to the most popular anime. There are also people who have recently gotten into anime and don't have strong opinions about anything except what they've seen recently (which often but not always means popular anime). Older anime fans are more likely to be a bit more willing to give props to older anime, but they too fall victim to nostalgia glasses - and older anime fans might not be up-to-date with anime, making them less likely to even be on r/anime in the first place. All-anime-watching-Andys might be the most able to rank things accurately, but they're relatively rare and were limited to picking their top 20 just like everyone else. While it's admirable that they tried to give weighting to the top 20 shows people picked, it's not nearly enough to give proper weighting for shows that are universally well-regarded (top 100) but don't have diehard followings. Notably, this list is strongly affected by a sort of popularity feedback loop (which MAL somewhat mitigates with its weighting system). A lot of people who start dabbling into anime will almost always start with the most popular series, so a lot more people will be voting for those series compared to things that aren't popular. This gives a much higher weight to popular anime and a lower weight to well regarded but lesser known anime. MAL is different from the list in the video in the sense that even if most people are limiting their anime viewing experience exclusively to the most popular series, less popular series still get relatively accurate ratings based on those who have watched them - as long as there are no bad actors bombing the ratings. Popular series don't suffer as much from rating bombs because a few 1s in a sea of 7s, 8s, and 9s will do little to change the score. In contrast, a pond of 8s, 9s, and 10s can easily be weighed down by a few 1s. I'd like to think they do try to discount malicious 1s with their weighting system by discounting ratings that fall outside of the standard deviation of a score that is heavily concentrated at the top end, but it's doubtlessly impossible to give an accurate score to everything. With that said, it was never going to be possible to create a ranking with a consistent approach to scoring, whether it's MAL or not. People can only vote for what they're familiar with, and people's tastes change over time. Things that they rate highly at the age of 15 would receive a lower score from them at 30 if they were to rewatch it, but ironically nostalgia glasses tend to make scores inflate rather than go down. This is an issue that affects even MAL, and it's not going to change since zombie ratings from old fans will live on in their ranking system, giving inflated scores to things that might not hold up to today's standards. But perhaps that's fair if the goal of giving a rank to something is to indicate the impact an anime had on the culture rather than the value one would receive from watching it today. Perhaps that's the crux of the issue. What is the purpose of a ranking? If we can't even agree on that, then we can't agree on what deserves to be ranked highly. And if we're not concerned about maintaining the legacy of anime that we look upon fondly with nostalgia but wouldn't hold up to the scores we originally gave them, then perhaps a ranking system needs to allow for the decay of old ratings based on the time that has passed since it was rated - with only those that have had a strong lasting impression continuing to be ranked highly. But if that's what we're after, then the issue of this list being affected by recency bias and nostalgia glasses isn't so bad after all. Maybe it's accurate in its own way. I just wonder if having an ongoing voting process would help. If everyone was given two votes - to give -1 to an anime you think is overrated, and to give +1 to an anime you think is underrated - the list would doubtlessly look a lot different. If each vote could be withdrawn (removing the -1 or +1) and then re-used (to give the -1 or +1 to another anime), the ranking would shift over and over. You might find that the list eventually settles on an order that promotes less objectionable choices (well liked series without many detractors) and punishes more objectionable choices (series that are very popular but have many detractors).
Golden Time is 1000 times better than Fire Force. The problem with many of these anime lists is that incredible shows are shoved to the bottom because everyone watches the popular shounen. The shounen is good, but people need to watch more anime in other genres. Kaguya-sama is my favorite anime so seeing it in the top 10 makes me so happy. I recommend it to a lot of people who watch anime and many don’t even know what it is. Makes me sad.
As someone who loves both K-ON! And Bocchi the Rock, I've overanalyzed the shit out of both shows. And I'd actually say Bocchi does a lot of things better than K-ON, and yes, I do think it's slightly better. Top 20 however???? Yeah I agree that's probably too high.
Yeah, people like to say K-ON is about eating cake, but the show really would benefit from having more focus on the music, the band playing for Azusa was one of the best moment imo.
Honestly, Joey gives too much credit on K-On. Just like he said about Horimiya effect, most charm K-On has, besides the music, just get boring through age.
@@ShotterGames That's the whole point of the show. K-on is about taking things easy and enjoying the journey, rather than taking things to serious. K-on is an iyashikei show not a ganbatte show.
@@dvast I know filler was a big problem with anime back then, but the core anime by itself is good. If 4K Media actually cared about how everyone sees the anime (which is basically the core of the brand) they'd release a Yu-Gi-Oh Kai or something.
@@XTornado8198 How I look at it is that fillers you can skip and shouldn't be considered in the rating, but more like bonus material on the anime that you can choose to watch. What often are the issues with long running shows is the pacing being so slow, and there are so many great shows that deserve to be higher on the list.
just love the fact that maison ikkoku made it to top 500, absolute Takahashi sensei classic that isn't talked about much now like her other works unfortunately
I disagree man, fruits basket was incomplete, Maison ikkoku wrapped up in the perfect way, while I agree it deserves some recognition in this era, doesn't have to be a remake, I personally don't want the new cringe self proclaimed WEEBS to absolutely butcher the fandom of this masterpiece of an anime, maybe an ova of after story like the pachinko animation is a better approach, but there is no need to touch the original, it's perfect as it is, I may be yapping a lot, but this anime just has a very special place in my heart and I personally don't want it to get ruined. I'd rather gatekeep than let it get ruined.
Maison Ikkoku is my favorite story ever, glad it was on the list atleast. Honestly i don't think it needs a remake at all. The art and animation is very beautiful, the voice acting is great, the adaptation is almost perfect expect a few left out chapters from the manga, but still perfect. Its a perfect anime that doesn't need a remake imo.
There is no such thing as "too early to decide" when the whole season of Frieren has already aired, man...And it is Madhouse we are talking about; will they really be bothered to do the second season? I guess not.
@@samuraijosh1595 It is not even a slow burner show. It is just an anime that mesmerized you in every episode with the peak aesthetic, character writing, and the dialogue interaction between each character. And did you even watch the first episode, man?? There were so much things happened in just the first half of the episode. Do me a favor and just watch the reaction compilations of Frieren episode, tell me how many reactors cried during that first episode alone, how do you even dare to call it slow when the first episode already made you empathize with the character. Regarding Mushishi, yeah I respect your opinion. Even though I would say that Monster the anime is a true definition of slow burner story. It started slow in the first 20 episodes, and it leads to that iconic scene between Tenma and Johan. Frieren, on the other hand, has no real goal or objective. Yes you can consider ende/reviving Himmel as the 'ending' of her journey. But, the purpose of her journey is actually to know better about human. Therefore, that mage exam was never intended to be the climax of this anime. Regarding to Joey's statement that it is too early to decide that Frieren is the best anime show currently, I think that is just a terrible take. Take Oshi no Ko for example. So many people overrated the heck out of that show during the initial release of the anime. But then after like ep 5 or something, the rating dropped drastically. Frieren has been in the top for months, bro. So, I'll just let the rating speak for the show itself.
@@praf1069 I've watched 15 episodes of frieren so far. I get what it's trying to do. I've watched similar shows like mushhishi and natsume book of friends. The problem with frieren is it's too stale and boring and cliche in some episodes. A slow burner doesn't mean the writing has to be boring. I think frieren deserves to be in top 50, not top 5.
too early to judge where the story goes as it could be a dumpster fire and not land the ending in the manga. Even then the frieren adaption is not that interesting of an story and is carried by the animation and visuals. If this IP was given to any other studio and had weaker production quality no one would bat an eye and it would fall in to "generic fantasy 842". An anime show that should be number 1 on a top list should excel in everything from artstyle, story, animation and music/sound while frieren only does really well on animation since the artstyle is generic and the story is mid.
I'm glad people are still loving Bocch after more than a year. Still resonates with people including me. This is a "favorites" list, right? Not the best anime. So it makes sense why most of the users voted these.
Bocchi is a fun, lighthearted and uplifting anime that also has the music, animation, direction, and themes to resonate with big parts of the fanbase. It 100% makes sense for it to make it this high up on a "favorite anime" list, even if it could be argued to be lower on a "best anime" list.
So what's happening here is you got a very large amount of posers who claim to "watch anime" and they claim that "the best anime" is their favorite 1 out the the 5 they have watched in total their whole life. They don't watch any more than that because they don't want to be seen as "a weird cringe weeaboo". It's also the same people who continuously cosplay overrated anime such as one piece, demon slayer, sailor moon, death note, and the vocaloid Hatsune Miku or damn Deadpool which has nothing to do with anything...

I do think a caveat with Frieren being number 1 is that it actually is it has relatively low in the number of people who view it as their #1-3 favorite anime. However, it, by far, dominated the #4-20 favorite anime. What probably happened was a lot of people, when thinking of what to fill out their list after their top favorites, chose Frieren as it was the most recent high quality anime series they could remember. Obviously, there are still a lot people who viewed it as a their absolute favorite (like me) but it’s wide appeal combined with recency bias means that it gained a lot of points in its favor.
MT absolutely shits on Re:Zero, what are you smoking? In fact, it should have been higher. Greatest anime ever (not by my opinion, but by undeniable fact): 1: FMA:B 2: AoT 3: MT 4: Spirited away 5: Kaguya-sama 6: Frieren 7: Vinland Saga After this it becomes harder because we've basically ran out of absolute masterpieces. In fact, the others are: 8: TBD 9: TBD 10: TBD
As someone who thinks LOTR is top tier movie-making, if not THE best movie trilogy of all times, I do believe that Frieren deserves that No.1 spot, regardless of recency bias. It's THE best fantasy anime ive ever watched, THE best anime of its genre for sure. Whether you think it deserves no.1 anime of all time would then depend on what your favourite genre is. Because if your fav genre is romance, you wouldnt think AOT or One piece or FMAB are No.1 animes of all time. If your fav genre is isekai, you'd agree that Mushoku tensei deserves that high spot. If your fav genre is mecha, you'd think Code Geass should be no.1 All these shows have different genres, some are so different from one another that they shouldnt even be comparable in 1 list, but Frieren is not only the best in its category/genre, it's also flawless in a multitude of criterias/categories; its character dynamics have so much heart and humor and realism, its characters tehselves each hold so much depth, its world building hold no plot holes, its so fluid and makes so much sense, its story/show form of adventure-esque episodes amidst the larger plot is brilliantly, enjoyably done. The pacing is like a movie, the music is a masterpiece in itself with Evan Call making it 2 years in advance, and 2 whole years of production time, beautiful animation and voice acting; what more could you ask for? It's so hard to objectively criticise Frieren as a show, be it in terms of story-writing or story-telling techniques or its various components in its production; hence its no.1 spot as a perfect show so far.
11:22 bro, you don’t understand why world end suka suka is some people’s favorite. Cuz it’s a lot of people’s first emotional fantasy anime and the ending is kinda peak, it’s so moving and good! The music and world building are also *chief kiss
Yeah but this is a reddit vote. The anime sub reddit is much more actively engaged in any anime that are airing and a bit less biased towards mainstream/popularity. Altho ofcourse there is a lot of overlap too (like AOT). 86 was a big hit there.
r/anime LOVED 86. Lena's been a very high seed in the Best Girl bracket since she was first eligible. also casuals largely didn't take the time to vote in this, so it was mostly regulars who visit the subreddit at least several times a week. I think, too, 86 got a major boost from the movie-level production values of the delayed final two episodes, which lingered in people's minds.
I listened to the "kids on the slope" medley scene so many times, well deserved. "Arcane" not under the top 10? Josh the anime dude should watch it and make a video about it ;)
Yeah, but it is a very old anime. I'm not saying that just because its old, I'm saying that because the directing and editing is really old and didn't age that well. For fans though, that will probably be a part of the charm. But for newer audience will just be an obstacle to overcome.
wild that it was a favorite of joey's mum tho bc if i'm remembering right isn't this like. the "content warning: everything" manga. not that i'm saying mums/moms can't like stuff like that or that she wasn't young too once but it does perhaps explain a few things abt his ability to read the wildest shit without flinching

The first season of Sousou no Frieren is the closest thing to a perfect anime I have ever seen. It elevates the source material to a fun and ridiculous degree.
Your Saying Frieren is Better than Aot , HXH, Vinland Saga, One piece, monogatari , Evangeline, Made in Abyss, Monster. Fk no , yes Frieren is Awesome but the only anime close to perfection is Attack on Titan.
I think Dumas in the Count of Monte Cristo actually laughed at this, with Edmond commenting that the painting were "bad" because they haven't yet grown old.

The r/anime rankings prove that r/anime actually has pretty excellent taste. The shaft trio of Madoka, Monogatari, San Gatsu no lion all being top tier, Kimisomu being in the top 200, Clannad being in the top 15, Made in abyss and Gintama making the top 20, konosuba being high, Violet evergreen being in the top 25...even with the recency bias, these are some banger choices here.
I mean My Dress Up Darling first season is finished why would anyone still be talking about it? 90 percent of the anime on this list that joey likes no one talks about anymore lol. Thats just normal things come and go and something new comes out and people move on.
Frieren is like Violet Evergarden for me. It's a really beautiful solemn show that's dragged down by the fact that it's an anime. I just personally think anime doesn’t lend itself well to the subtle emotional maturity those shows try to represent. Frieren is plagued by fantasy and game tropes from japanese pop culture like the original party consisting of a hero, a warrior, a mage and a priest, the simplistic and arbitrary magic system which seems almost divinely powerful at times and useless at others, and so on. Frieren is all about emotion but all immersion is ruined for me with all the incredibly on the nose pop culture references and the dull unoriginal humor. There are also the pointless shonen battle scenes. To me Frieren seems like it would he an amazing live action HBO series, but as an anime its torn between its hyperbolic and humoristic origins and the solemn tone it's aiming at. It almost feels like the author wanted to make an emotionally mature show but their editor said "no you need to add action scenes, and this kind of humor and these kinds of references or no one will be interested", which just detracts from the experience overall.
Hard to make content 24/7 , read manga and then also watch the anime of it. I feel like most people have the Joey experience where their anime-watchspeed goes down to a crawl.
@@satoutatsuhiro866 yeah but that doesnt mean he has to put down everything he doesnt watch especially since he used to be the guy telling people to be open minded and watch newer and different types of shows and niches and to not be biased but now he doesnt even watch any anime and still makes vids on them without info
Just to comment on Ef: Tale of Memories/Melodies, it was released in 2007 and produced at Studio Shaft with director Shin Oonuma who is a contemporary of Akiyuki Shinbo... the directing and scene composition are very similar to what Studio Shaft is known for and would be later popularized in shows such as Puella Magi Madoka Magica and Bakemonogatari. It's also fairly representative of directing seen in Shin Oonuma's later works at Silverlink. But yeah... aside from the whole 3-5 interwoven love story aspect there wasn't anything particularly complicated or novel from a story perspective.
Mushoku Tensei definitely deserves to be in the Top 15. At least for me. Its the best Isekai Anime with ReZero and one of the Best Anime/Novel ever produced imo
The best Isekai is by far Juuni Kokuki. Almost every "new" isekai are bad. re zero and mushoku are kind of okay but nothing amazing. I think it's really made for random otakus which aren't really critical about what they are watching.
@@LamperougeCC I think I know that better than you. Juuni Kokuki I've by far the best world building I've seen in an anime Isekai, it uses far better the fact that it is an Isekai than the other + it's far more original on the cultural aspect being inspired by old China. Also there is no ridiculous harem interactions and the story feels more deep and mature. Re:Zero is probably in my top 5 anime Isekai but he does have a lot of flaws that most of the new era have. And Mushoku Tensei isn't well written anime wise. It feels random but well animated even though it's superior when it compares to most of isekais animes.
I understand your perspective but a work doesn’t need to be finished for its current rating to be #1. I think it’s fair that from what we have right now that frieren is #1.
It's a popularity contest afterall, #42 for a SoL anime that's almost 10 years old is really really good. The discussion on the rewatch/current threads is always a pleasure to read, there's no short of people in the community who loves it.
Whenever you start talking about non non biyori, you only say it's cute. I get the feeling you never actually watched it and only talk about your feeling of previews and pictures. I mean yeah, 86 is too high but still
Agree it's hard to call Frieren number 1 just yet, but it's definitely a contender for me. First time I've bought physical manga. All around, they nailed it. Characters, story, worldbuilding, well thought-out DND mechanics, comedy, tragedy. My biggest complaint at this point is that Frieren hasn't shown any real weakness in battle - even in flashbacks. But what drew me in is her learning to grieve, and come to terms with the passage of time. Many GOAT anime have touched on this - Shinobu Mail arc (and Hachikuji Time), End of Gurren Lagann, Gunbuster/DB. And here it is presented in a beautiful journey structured like Shinichiro Watanabe had directed it. Katanagatari is another it brings to mind. It's hard to say how it will end, but isn't it worthwhile to live in the moment and love those close while you can?
Haha that #1 reveal was hilarious. It makes sense when you see the vote distribution. A lot more people put it in the tail end of their list, likely because it's the hot new show and all the beginner anime fans have gotten to it while the classics that more people put as their #1-5 would take them longer to discover.
Casual anime fan here. The vast majority of these I've never heard of, including #1. In this long list of anime, I was surprised that some of my favorites were not listed at all. E.g., "Noein" is a great anime IMO that I never hear anyone mention at all and I thought it would be on this list somewhere but I didnt see it. Also "Basilisk" and "Blood+" are darker anime that I thought surely would be on a list like this but I didnt see them either.
Lot of these are newer so likely more newer anime fans and/or recency bias. #1 aired from last October to March. I started getting into anime a few years ago and so I've never heard of the all the anime you've mentioned. It's kinda sad though as many good ones are overlooked
@@abbyssdweller It's overrated even though it's a 10/10 (Its worth to me, not by perfection). Mid? It objectively isn't. It is unfortunate that the high praise and ratings will or did disappoint some people like you.
@@abbyssdweller it could really depend on what you’ve seen among other factors. I basically only really watch anime since I started a few years ago. And for 2 years I’ve watched dozens of anime each season. Frieren will forever be one of my favourites. It was an absolute joy watching every week, and the complete opposite of forgettable. An anime where I could remember having one of the most number of incredible moments. I’m curious on what you were expecting though. I saw the trailers and knew it was gonna be special.
Konosuba being at 22 aswell didnt expect that one to be there. Not that i dont think Konosuba is great but number 22?? Wow Also wheres Apotechary??? Hello.. did i miss it, or wasnt in this list at all?
Apothecary at 43. Konosuba is incredibly popular, like top 5 most favorites among re zero, mushoku tensei, slime. Mostly thanks to being one of the funniest anime ever. I personally don't find it that enjoyable
I was so judgemental before I watched it, because I was like 'it's probably just ridiculously overrated, there's no way it's actually this good'... Yeah, no, I think it's genuinely the best anime of all time. I could not stop watching after episode 3, I was so hooked.
@@username_kk2177 Counter point I found it extremely stale and boring. I forced myself to watch and even then I had to take week long breaks to watch 2 more eps. After watching like 10 eps I could not torture myself more. It was that bad and I wanted to like it but that show is just big pile of nothing.
Its always weird to hear someone say whether or not something is deserving of the number 1 spot when it always comes down to personal bias. Frieren may not have ended but its definitely up there for me in terms of anime, not to mention that it has a fantastic and memorable soundtrack by Evan Call.
Now all we need is a Joey doing his own PROPER top 500 list. :3 Would be interesting to see a run-down of his list with scathing comments from his mates as well.
Recency bias is real. I’m not an FMAB fan, but even I accept it as a strong anime. some of these top 10/50/100/250 anime on this list seem crazy high to me. I’ve watched 2 Freiren episodes, and it’s not in my top 100. Maybe the remainder of the series can change my mind.
Joey never fails to say some of the dumbest shit.. How are we supposed to take the opinions of someone whos favourite shows more often then not focus on the lives pre-pubescent school girls seriously..
Me: Evangelion💜💚💙❤, people can say otherwise. Also I think The Garden of Words is one of the best anime film. Fruits basket is another forever love of mine. 🍙 Usagi Drop lol !! Anime super cute, Manga totally fine by me! Good stuff either way. Haibane & Lane appearing there makes me smile~~ Surprisingly I quiet liked Horimiya I believe these results highly depends on the age of the voters as well.
Amazing video Joey of the top 500 anime list out there, fantastic job. I’m shock that full metal alchemist brotherhood is in the 10 over the original full metal alchemist and I love the original full metal alchemist series then brotherhood. My favourite anime of all time is the vision of Escaflowne should have be high up at least in the 100 at least.
For the most part it goes like this: "Oh, 'insert show Joey likes' is here? I was expecting it to be higher! Has the same amount of votes as 'insert another show Joey likes'? That's good. But it also has the same number of votes as 'insert show Joey dislikes', sooo yeah..."
Makes me sad to see Dead Mount Death Play near the bottom... Not that I think it's an all-time great (it's not even close to finished), but this just tells me not a lot of people watched it unfortunately. Edit: 20:39 - No, it's shocking how LOW Bungo Stray Dogs is! Should be top 75 at worst! Edit #2: 23:05 - *WHAT?!* The 90's Berserk anime was the first anime I ever gave a 10/10 to on MAL way back in the day! I knew nothing about the manga, this was over a decade ago. With zero context, I was shocked how great it was. I feel like you haven't watched in a long time or let modern versions influence your opinion.
8:25 yeah my reactions the same Goblin Slayer deserves to be a lot higher. 27:22 I haven't watched MIA or Gintama but Mushoku tensei is ABSOLUTLY better than re zero and ESPECIALLY Gurren lagan.
I am rather curious why is that? Yes, it was enjoyable, but there are a lot of anime like Bocchi and it isn't anything groundbreaking. So what causes it to be in your top 10?
@@songschannel9059 so idk about groundbreaking or anything like that, but for me I found the depiction of anxiety through the various wild styles of animation to be some of the most relatable content around anxiety I've ever seen. Obviously it's exaggerated but , for example, the idea of someone turning to dust and dying because their bangs were brushed away exposing their face was both, to me, hilarious and relatable. There's certainly more to why I love the show, but that is the first thing that comes to mind. Also just to be clear Joey can hate it if he wants, he def has that right, I just don't get the hate lol
I wouldn't even be mad if bocchi replaced EVA's spot. EVA is by far the most overrated show up there. Doesn't deserve the top 10 whatsoever. Istg as someone who has watched a lot of classics EVA is nowhere near as good as people preach it to be
I love how this is a top 500 anime list and Joey is like "People must not have read the manga if they got this anime up here". Bro it's an ANIME list 😂

Yeah I kept getting confused as to why he kept bringing up manga when it’s completely irrelevant to the list
It is even low by r/anime standards. During best girl contests (Holo should win by the way) votes are several times that.
It’s all statistically irrelevant.
this is incorrect, nothing is being spread thin at all.

And having see a list/number of people who also resonated with the anime you liked is just warming to see.
Yeah, and sometimes you like a show for how much it helped you through a certain emotional period of your life, even if objectively it isn't great. And sometimes, you just have weird taste. I think it's beautiful that people can see something so special in the same place others see mediocrity

Not just that, Anime content is just so widely available that aside from Garnts seasonal rundowns and scripted essay-style vids, theres not much specific anime-related content that gets alot of views. Chris and Connor have both said it too that theres so much untapped content available in Japan and making vids of that and posting on the more relevant channel is probably a better decision overall.

reddit has quite an active CGDCT fanbase
There is no objective ranking
What does objective ranking mean?
i'm surprised with iyashikei mainly because it's a dying genre lol
The purpose is to show the general opinion of the anime subreddit. That's all it is.
I love how Joey completely forgot that this list is not indicative of how good a show is but rather the subreddits favourite anime 😂
Like he forgot why he said i apreciate he said that as an Asterix at the beginning 😅
I just like fire force for the sick ass amvs
Oh man, I've watched most of this list. A lot of variety which is good. Always great to see FMA and Monogatari still being loved.
Just like he said about Horimiya effect, most charm K-On has, besides the music, just get boring through age.

just love the fact that maison ikkoku made it to top 500, absolute Takahashi sensei classic that isn't talked about much now like her other works unfortunately
Maison Ikkoku is a series that absolutely deserves the remake treatment fruits basket got
I hate that. It's been half a year already, that's enough time.
its not that good. its too much of a slow burner sometimes. Mushishi is even more slow than frieren and yet is even more engaging.

If your fav genre is mecha, you'd think Code Geass should be no.1
All these shows have different genres, some are so different from one another that they shouldnt even be comparable in 1 list, but Frieren is not only the best in its category/genre, it's also flawless in a multitude of criterias/categories; its character dynamics have so much heart and humor and realism, its characters tehselves each hold so much depth, its world building hold no plot holes, its so fluid and makes so much sense, its story/show form of adventure-esque episodes amidst the larger plot is brilliantly, enjoyably done.

Yeah, but it is a very old anime. I'm not saying that just because its old, I'm saying that because the directing and editing is really old and didn't age that well. For fans though, that will probably be a part of the charm. But for newer audience will just be an obstacle to overcome.

My favorite anime (3-gatsu) is number 26. I count it as a win!
Haha that #1 reveal was hilarious. It makes sense when you see the vote distribution. A lot more people put it in the tail end of their list, likely because it's the hot new show and all the beginner anime fans have gotten to it while the classics that more people put as their #1-5 would take them longer to discover.

He still hasn’t seen second half of S1 lol
Recency bias is real. I’m not an FMAB fan, but even I accept it as a strong anime.
some of these top 10/50/100/250 anime on this list seem crazy high to me. I’ve watched 2 Freiren episodes, and it’s not in my top 100. Maybe the remainder of the series can change my mind.
Joey never fails to say some of the dumbest shit.. How are we supposed to take the opinions of someone whos favourite shows more often then not focus on the lives pre-pubescent school girls seriously..
I’m so happy with Frieren being number 1. That’s awesome. Some of them I didn’t agree with but it’s fair.
Me: Evangelion💜💚💙❤, people can say otherwise. Also I think The Garden of Words is one of the best anime film. Fruits basket is another forever love of mine. 🍙
Usagi Drop lol !! Anime super cute, Manga totally fine by me! Good stuff either way. Haibane & Lane appearing there makes me smile~~ Surprisingly I quiet liked Horimiya
I believe these results highly depends on the age of the voters as well.
What do you mean the manga’s fine by you 💀
Usagi Drop isn't the one about the pdfile/groomer? how the hell that is fine by you? lol
Brotherhood's just the finished version of og fma tho. Though yeah, the first few eps where they go through the same timeline are better in the og.
For the most part it goes like this:
"Oh, 'insert show Joey likes' is here?
MADOKA MAGICA IN TOP 5 LETS GOOOOOOOOOO
Freaking DESERVED, They are one of the biggest and most silent fanbases alive bro (JUST TO KEEP IT SPOILER-FREE FOR OUTSIDERS LOL) 😂😂😂😂
I'll movie is coming
16:16 Maquia succeded to convert the 2hrs lenght of the film into something that even 24 eps series can't do
The Bocchi disrespect is crazy.. if anything it should be higher than 12th...
Nah, it's chilling in 12.
Im a bocchi fan, and 12 is an excellent position considering its a CGDCT genre. Although I think Konosuba should be higher than Bocchi tho.
@@Porchy. unfortunately, it should be #1 because I am biased
8:25 yeah my reactions the same Goblin Slayer deserves to be a lot higher.
27:22 I haven't watched MIA or Gintama but Mushoku tensei is ABSOLUTLY better than re zero and ESPECIALLY Gurren lagan.
The bocchi hate is wild, def one of my top 10 lol
I am rather curious why is that? Yes, it was enjoyable, but there are a lot of anime like Bocchi and it isn't anything groundbreaking. So what causes it to be in your top 10?
@songschannel9059 it doesn't to be "groundbreaking" it just have to be enjoyable, compared to "a lof anime like Bocchi" like tou mentioned.
Istg as someone who has watched a lot of classics EVA is nowhere near as good as people preach it to be
Having it above shows like Code Geass, Made in Abyss, and Monster is wild though
9:20 Oh my god... What the f indeed? The are of course many things we don't agree about, but this didn't seem right at all.
