      I'm with you. I have big hands, and in the middle of a set, I don't want to be fiddling around with tiny, bunched up controls. Plus, the controls are robust enough that once I'm up and running, I never have to touch my screen.

      @@fredericsicsic9391 From mixars primo have problems with the jog wheels and ground. Many people write about this on the forum. And in General, I consider mixars a " raw " controller. In terms of functionality, Yes, but in terms of reliability, I doubt it. Hercules has been producing controllers for many years, and it has more confidence.

    For anyone interested, this controller was plug-and-play with my iPad and DJay Pro AI, with the lightning camera adapter. I was up and running in minutes. For an "entry level" controller, this thing feels solid and more mid-to-pro in quality. I own more expensive gear that doesn't feel as well made or full featured.
    On Djay Pro AI, the 8 pad modes seem to, for the most part, work as expected, including all 8 hot cues per track. Sampler mode triggers are mapped to spread across all 16 sound pads in the app, which is fine. I think, overall, the mappings of the modes might be a hybrid of Serato and DJuiced, but I need to verify. Either way, it was intuitive what each of the 8 pad modes does in the app.
    Mode 8 on each deck is mapped to trigger the 8 instant fx per deck in the app, although pads 1 & 2 on each side also trigger left or right filter sweeps, as do the dedicated FX buttons. None of this is a big deal because I'm pretty sure I can work with these mappings and setup the FX to work for me. This seems to be a variation on the common issue with the 500 and other software, so its not a big deal to me.
    Browsing through folders and playlists to find and assign songs is a solid, intuitive experience, so no surprises there.
    Big picture, it's doing what I need, and with the large form-factor, solid build, generous size of the UI, it punches WAY above its weight and I have no qualms about showing up to a gig with other seasoned DJs and putting the Hercules on the table.
    Is it a DDJ-1000? No, but it will get the job done, and look/feel good while doing it, I also won't be out $1,300 if things get out of hand and someone spills a beer on it or otherwise accidentally trashes it.

      I am wanting to buy a new dj controller for a while now. I started with the ddj 200 and it was great to start but now I need something a little bigger with more options. Currently I only own an Ipad Pro so Spftweat isn‘t that big of a dealbraker for me. I am debating over buying the Ddj 400 or the hercules Impluse 500 to dj with my ipad. What are youre thoughts on this. Which one is the better option? Hope you see this and can give me an answer:)

For the purposes that I need, this controller looks like it will be able to take me from my beginner status to running the events that my start up company Lamentally Sound CIC will be hosting. Great stuff.

    From the Mixtrack: Pitchfader, Jogs with Displays and the FX Paddles
    From the Hercules: the size, the metal faceplate, the feet and the Aux integration
    From the Mixars Primo: the Soundcard, the I/O and the DVS integration
    Throw in a mini innofader, make it 400 to 500€ and i‘m sold!!!

    After a few months living with the Hercules 500 I have used it with Serato Pro, Serato Lite and Djuced I am pretty happy with this. I have it as an input to my Mackie D.2 mixer and 1210's so basically I have a 2 channel controller into a 2 channel mixer which has 2 decks as I like scratching. If your looking to scratch this controller is not the best as the motion on the jog wheels is not that accurate (maybe it the speed of my laptop) Thats the only negative.
    Positives - RGB lights are brighter than the review say, in a normal room there are more than enough, FX are mappable and can be stacked to use up to 4 at a time via the rgb pads and fx button, beat match is great and my kids are learning the basics of mixing. Djuced software is better than Serato Lite and is free. After using the Serato Pro for a month I didn't think it offered my anything addition I needed which Djuced didnt have for free, for me this is my first controller so the software packages were all taken a face value as a beginner. Samples and tracks are easy to upload and makes mixing fun.
    Considering the price its a no brainer for anyone from a newbie to intermediate that plays from home. I will never be playing to a big crowd or plan too, if I was then I'd just take my mother mixer as a slave unit and balanced out's are available.
    Coming from vinyls this makes you lazy, the learning curve is much easier vs vinyl. After years I am still not great on vinly, a few on this and Im mixing like pro! 10/10 from me. Good review from Crossfader too once again,

    • @osh241
      @osh241 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@niamhodonoghue112 The SB3 has Serato, the ddj400 using rekordbox software. I think the SB3 is better for scratching. But if it's for a complete newbie I go with the Hurcules. Easier learning curve for beginners. My daughter is 10 and it good for her to learn on but also has loads of more advanced features. Hurcules or ddj400 was the question I asked myself but went for the Hurcules as it had better build quality and features that suited what I needed.

    Hi Guys!
    I like to make an educated purchase, and for that I need the help of reviewers like you before making a decision. I do that regularly with other audio, PC and basically any technical purchases, but today I badly needed some advice for this category of products, as I am totally new to the field. Happily I got the video reviews from you, and a couple of other reviewers. With you, I was really impressed, I will mention why at the end of my comment.
    I want to buy a beginner DJ controller as a X-Mas gift for myself, to use for fun and private parties; I spent the whole evening looking at 20+ videos to make up my mind between various models, starting with your review of 5 best models for 2020. I narrowed down my shortlist to 3 models, different makes. I was almost pushing the "buy" button for another model from the competition, then I realized how limited the connectivity choices are with competitor's models (i.e. input options like RCA, jacks, etc.): big issue if you wish to use Spotify Premium, which is not integrated with any DJ software... What do you do if you wish to use another sound source, in addition to your laptop, in that case? The two other models I looked at, from the competition, had only the microphone input, an the USB connection reserved for your laptop, and that turned me off. So I remembered your thoughts on this model from the "best 5" video, in particular around the exceptional build quality for the price, and I watched carefully this video in the end. My choice is made for this model now, primarily for the two reasons already mentioned: connectivity and build quality. Software and overall features are not bad either.
    There are other great reviewers of DJ gear out there, but you helped the most. Even compared to reviewers for other categories of technical products, you distinguish yourself through the honest, well-balanced, focused and detailed review, and I would like to give you a big "thank you". Well done!
    Cristian

    • @osh241
      @osh241 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thegreatx So far so good, mixes are getting tight and learning to use most of the fx and features. The only thing I can complain about it the pitch fade, it's a bit small and sensitivity is not consistent. Sometimes you adjust it and it does nothing then just .2 of a bpm. Fx can be layered ie a few at a time but this needs done via the laptop screen. Better on Djuced than Serato Pro! Djuced is pretty good and obviously the Inpulse 500 is built to get the most out of that software. If this was 4 channel with more inputs and had bigger jog wheels and better/smoother pitch fader it would be epic. I'd upgrade to that in a heartbeat. 👊

    As someone who mainly scratches on controllers, the major points im interested in a review are the jogwheels and the crossfader, and how they perform for scratching. There was no mention of the crossfader and the button you use to switch the way it performs. Disappointing as that was the main thing i wanted to know.

    • @djholland4235
      @djholland4235 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I briefly touch on it at 2:48 but admittedly forgot to into more detail, I do apologise. The hardware switch enables the Crossfader to be Off, Hard Cut and Linear Cut. The crossfader has a really small cut in distance and Lawrence James said the whole controller was an absolute joy to scratch on. Very responsive, it just sadly lacks a needle position indicator.

    I feel the Mixars Primo has WAAAY more to offer for a little extra cash (€100 or so) though.
    Hardware mixer fx, aux/mic input AND two external audio inputs for decks etc, timecode soundcard, FULL Serato, bright RGB leds even running on USB bus powered, record output, booth output, can run as stand alone mixer without computer.
    Primo doesn't have legs, leds underneath a filter on aux or the beat adjustment leds though and also it's jogwheels, although they feel nice, they have a short backspin.

    Very impressive , nice review mate
    Downsides : USB bus powered as you point out
    Club line level you need mains power .
    Plus sides : Amazing mixer that’s 2 channel and looks the part from a distance for any DJ !!!
    Quality pads bit like a S2 MK3 , jog dials look very good premium, metal plate build
    Good quality RCA input & outputs , mic EQ
    What might of been good :
    USB type C option for brighter LEDs , Audio driver output or Mains supply
    Longer pitch faders instead of the sync button
    They had space for them !? That might of pushed Numark more there .

  • @HairyScaryMark
    @HairyScaryMark 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    It has some nice features, but I'm not convinced it is necessarily an advantage over the DDJ400 or S2, both which come with a 'full' version of DJ software, when you account for the extra money involved to buy that. I understand it technically comes with the full version of Djuiced, which looks like it has a lot of potential, but I'm guessing most people would still rather use Serato at this point, meaning the cost has to be factored in.
    The additional size isn't necessarily an advantage as well, as space is often limited.
    I dislike the way they combined the filters and effects, so you can't use both at the same time. A few years a go, DJ controllers and mixers often didn't have dedicated filters, but since then even entry level controllers all have them now. I regularly use effects and filters at the same time when mixing out a song, so this would be a deal breaker for me. Sometimes I will combine the filter + mixer effect (delay) + pad effect (flanger) while fading out a song.
    Aux input and RGB pads are great, but not sure how useful the buttons at the top left of each deck are to most users. I'd rather have mixer/deck effects instead, personally.

    I still wanna do DJing and I'm very confused what should I use to start in the DJ industry I started being co.fused when I heard that rekordbox 6 has this ridiculous plans. I saw the video that DDJ 400 is the best but now it's hard to make a choice because of rekordbox 6. What should I do? What should I choose? I still wanna DJ, though

    •  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You will get all the capabilities the ddj 400 has with rb 6 because it's a 'hardware unlock' controller. But you can always use rb 5 which you get the license for besides the controller

    I preordered the ddj-400 a couple of weeks ago since it is sold out everywhere but now I am contemplating ordering this instead. I hear a lot of people talking about the fact that the ddj-400 allows for easier transitioning to eventually the ddj-1000. I also hear that on the Inpulse 500 affects and filters can’t be used at the same time. Really struggling with which one to get I don’t mind updating to serato pro money is not a factor more longevity, learning, and the one with the most capability

    Would you think that motorised jog wheels should enter the entry level dj controller market?
    Is there any value for beginners to get a motorised dj controller over a regular one which probably also means that a lot of things we consider standard will be missing so the price be reasonable?

    Can’t argue with the price but for some reason I still favor the ddj400 as the best entry level controller. Could the beat match tool be considered a handicap when moving to other dj equipment? Leaving the dj at a disadvantage on something like a cdj layout?

    • @Crossfader
      @Crossfader  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We wouldn't say so as the DJ should turn it off once they are getting comfortable doing the skill by ear. Much like training wheels on a bike, we wouldn't recommend leaving it on!

    I’m a beginner DJ and currently use the Hercules impulse 300 - absolutely love it but two aspects I don’t like are manual looping - if I hit the in button at the wrong place I can’t seem to cancel that without setting a loop? Secondly, the tempo sliders are a bit too small which sometimes makes it tricky to get to the specific tempo I want. Good to see Hercules have at least addressed the looping feature with that wheel!
