"The Land of Good" ("أرض الخير") by Ibrahim al-Kashif | English Translation

- “The Land of Good” (“ارض الخير”), better known as “I’m African, I’m Sudanese” (“انا افريقي انا سوداني”) is a song written by as-Sir Gador, one of Sudan’s most prolific and famed songwriters, and performed by Ibrahim al-Kashif, nicknamed “Abu al-Fan” (“father of art” or “father of music”) for his role in cementing the modern style of Sudanese orchestral pop, the dominant form of Sudanese music after the 1950s. “The Land of Good” is one of Sudan’s most popular patriotic songs, becoming a fixture of many protests and sit-ins during the 2019 revolution in Sudan. It’s for this reason I’ve chosen to translate it: Sudan is in the midst of another revolution against the military, which has cut off the internet to prevent the truth of its crimes being made public internationally.

1:56 - Literally the translation is more like “the land of good and good,” in Arabic poetry it is common to use two synonyms one after the other to fully clarify an action or an adjective, since I couldn’t find two great English synonyms, I elected instead to translate this in a way to remove the redundancy.
2:37 - The translation is more like “the light waters beloved nights,” but I expanded the translation a little bit to be more clear.

عليها اغني واقول للدنيا: "انا سوداني"

I sing for it, and tell the world: “I’m Sudanese”
شمسك طلعت وأشرق نورها بقت شمسين
shamsak tal’at wa shragh noora bigat shamseyn
Your sun has risen, its light shines, making two suns
شمس العزة ونورا الاكبر
shams al-’izza wa noora al-akbar
The sun of dignity, with its light - the brightest -
هلت شامخة زي تاريخي قوية وراسخة
halat shaamkha zey taareekhi gaweeya wa raaskha
It rises high, like my history, rich and deep-rooted
