this is one of the most thrilling videos I have ever seen on youtube! I am absolutely captivated by it! I am former industrial chemist, and you really know your shit mate! Good on you from new zealand.
Absolutely love your vids. Just started brewing couple months back and saw your turbo cider episode. Thank you for great detailed, fun and passionate videos. Keep enjoying life!!!
Great videos mate, I've learned heaps. The max safe abv wash you can put in the airstill is 40%, they say on their website. Also, airstill do a small parrot that fits without removing that spout.
Thanks Ruairi! Glad you liked the film, yes I've recently been adding 40% spirit into the still, I've also seen the small parrot but I'll stick with the one I have for now. Hope your stilling journey is as fun as mine has been.
Brilliant mate cracking video think I need to do the same with my wine, bought all the equipment to do it apart from the parrot and still not made any nearly 2 months.
Ive got 4 bottles of sparking orange and cranberry wine which is unpleasant to drink so am going to distill this tomorrow. Not sure on a flavour but will have a think.
Firey is heads that have snuck into your spirit. May be worth having a go at making cuts next time. Great to see a stilling vid from you 👍 been using a t500 for a while and am still learning to make cuts myself just on sugar wash, I get that fire a lot still.
Cheers for the advice Martin, I’m still learning. I’ve been told that carbon filtering should help remove the burn so will try that next time. I would compare the fire to drinking neat gin, which isn’t pleasant. With a mixer though both of these were perfectly palatable.
@@MossHomeandGarden loads of great channels to study for distilling and groups on fb. Turbo cider has led me to the dark side (hand sanitizer and bio fuel of course 😇 I'd never consume what I make.........) Perhaps it's worth looking into real fruit maceration rather than flavours. I use frozen berries etc from the supermarket and they do work really well. However, the air still will carry over flavour from what you put in. A reflux still will strip that flavour and leave you with a more neutral spirit to use as a blank canvas. Really enjoy your vids mate
@@martink9785 Cheers Martin, I’ve currently got a limoncello maturing, that’s been triple distilled and flavoured with real fruit, I’m looking forward to cracking it open. I’m going to read and study this craft a lot more this year.
Just ordered a air still as I have been watching what you have made with it I have some red wine that is not to my liking and will distill that can I ask you if its a bit firery would puting some sugar help
Don't forget, this is illegal in the UK. I don't know where you are, and personally do not care, just be careful, Many people have been arrested after filming themselves committing a crime on TH-cam. I think this may even be why Barley and Hops is no longer an active channel.

Ah cheers mate that's very kind of you to say. I learned everything from online forums myself, I guess all knowledge is learned. Cheers!

Hi Rebecca, thanks for the really kind comment, which is really very appreciated, I shall indeed keep enjoying life, regards! 😊

Cheers Steve, an appreciated comment, the stilling takes time but it’s not difficult once you grasp the basics. Good luck, the parrot is a must.

It should make a fairly neutral spirit, easy to flavour.

Can I mix and match between various wines and ciders to place into the air still?
You certainly can.
PS. Replying from other account.

Hi Mark, sugar might help, honey possibly better. Letting it breathe and ageing it also helps. Hope you enjoy the still!!
Just wondering if you could comment on what the smell is like on an air still. Someone mentioned that it is overbearing.
Hi Lew, no significant noticeable smell during the stilling, a very slight sweet odour but nothing overpowering or problematic.
hi m8 just watched your video as ive mentioned in the past keep the reaminder of the finished hot stuff from your still its fab weed killer
I will do Stevie, I made this months back so got your advice afterwards, same for my next two still vids. Cheers for your continued support 👍
5:09 is the heads = methanol?
My terminology is wrong, it is the foreshots which are methanol. The first 150ml or os out of the stiller.
👌
Cheers Colin!

15%?! Talk about tails! Yuck!
That was a while ago, I like to think i'm a bit better at this now...out of interest, where would you stop collecting in terms of ABV output?
