I don't have any problem "destroying" and old book, especially if it's already falling apart or being discarded and already in the trash. But I have always been attracted to 'trompe l'oeil,' and love having another way to make it and fake it. My husband who is a potter made an 'old very worn leather wallet,' that looks so real that everyone picks it up and is astonished to find it's not leather and it's not a wallet! I'd love to make a journal that's equally deceptive!
Wow, that wallet sounds amazing! I love trompe l'oiel, too. I don't mind if others repurpose an old book to create a wonderful piece of art, it's just hard for me to do personally. So I came up with this little trick and thought I would share :)
I love books too but an old or even new book at a thrift store will eventually be thrown away. It’s better to rescue it and repurpose it than put it in the landfill.
I feel like it’s a little harsh to judge all journal makers who use old book covers as “destroyers of old books.” I use old books that are completely falling apart and separated at the spine for my journals. I feel like those old books deserve to have a life after death - which is usually where I find them - the trash or the thrift where someone has discarded them. All that to say: I don’t consider myself in that category at all.
Very thorough instructions!! Thank you
this is lovely beautiful finish too thanks xxxx
I feel the same way you do. It breaks my heart to dismantle a book just for the cover. Glad to see this tutorial.
I LOVE this! I too am a vintage book lover, and I'm so glad to see this alternative. And I didn't think you were being "judgy" at all. Thank you!
Thank you so much, Marilyn!
Great video and I agree with you! No need to tear the old lovelies 🙏♥️
Very interesting! 🤔I’ve never seen this done-quite a process but you face explained well -can’t wait to see inside pages TFS
Thank you! I really appreciate that, it was a bit tricky to describe the whole process :)
Thank you so much, it kills me seeing butchered books even if I love the style. Looks like I have some scanning to do!
Thank you for a very enlightening video. I am going to give this project a go. TFS 😍
Looks brilliant, thankyouuuu 👌😍
Thank you, Isobel!

This is awesome! Thanks for this idea. May I ask one question: what type of printer do you use?
It might be easier and more authentic to print the cover on fabric to start with! 😀
What kind of printer and paper are you using? Awesome that you’re able to soak the paper in mod podge!
I have an Epson, apparently their ink doesn't smear like others. It was pretty pricey but I've had it for years and years now. I love it!
I found some vintage books at the goodwill and i just can’t seem to cut it or tear any pages out of them. 😫
Some of them are just keepers, right?! I love old books.

So agree, Debra! I definitely wasn't judging - as I said I love old book journal covers! Just another option ;)
Looks like an original.
Thanks, Donna!

Oh goodness Cassie, I definitely wasn't judging! Like I said, deconstructed journal covers are one of my favorite!
