  • A relaxing end to the day as we enjoyed a sunset cruise around the Farne islands. The Archipelago is composed of Inner and Outer Islands, of which Inner Farne is the largest. The Holy Island (or Lindisfarne) is not usually counted in as this is a tidal island, which causeway is covered by the tides for 12 hours per day. During the breeding season from May to the end of July there are thousands of nesting birds at the Farne Islands which include Puffins, Shags and Cormorants. There are also an estimated 3 to 4 thousand Grey Seals at the Farne Islands and large numbers can be counted basking on the rocks, especially at low water when more of the Islands are exposed. The earliest inhabitants of the Islands were hermits, the so-called Culdees. The most famous were Saint Aidan, who established the Monastery of Lindisfarne, and his follower, Saint Cuthbert who lived on the Inner Farne for around 9 years. The monks did not only live by the side with animal inhabitants of the islands but together with them. Celtic eremits, like later Franciscan monks held a very friendly attitude to animals. Saint Cuthbert himself introduced the earliest bird-protection laws. Following your cruise around the Farne Islands, we continue to sail along our beautiful coastline to enjoy scenic sunset views as the sun sets behind the magnificent Bamburgh Castle, with the occasional visit from our local dolphins.
