The Wall is a metaphor for a man who has built psychological barriers to the cruel world because of events from his life.
One of the causes for him to close himself off was an overbearing and overprotective mother. The line "...of course Mamma's gonna help build the wall"
refers to her part in his mental break with the world. The last line "Mother did it need to be so high" is him realizing how much she helped in building the wall.

The ending “mother did it need to be so high” is referring to the “wall” she built around him, which was referenced to 2 times before in the song. Early on he asks his mom “mother should I build a wall” to keep him safe from the cruel world out there. Next the line “of course mother will help build a wall” is because like you said the mom doesn’t want the child to grow and leave her... so the end “ mother did it need to be so high” is him asking his mom... did the wall you built need to be so high? As in did you really need to shelter me to that extreme extent?

My mom had just left for the night before the movie started, and it got to this song and man, it just made me cry. I love this whole album...the movie for this album came out when I was in high school I think and my Mom and I planned on going for a long while. She drove us to the nearest large city about an hour away which was big because she didn't really drive outside our small town. She rented a motel room for us and we went....we were going to see the movie as many times as we could before returning home. Well. The movie was not what we thought, it was about war and lots of ugly things, we saw it only once. I would love to see it now because it pertained to a whole lot of stuff I didn't know about as a kid. If you ever get the chance to see the movie do.
I think the line about, "Mother, did it have to be so high?" meant did you have to put so many bricks in the wall and protect me from everything?
Take some time alone, and listen to this whole album in order and watch the videos, it's wonderful. Another Brick in the Wall was about teachers and how they tortured the kids and held them back. Young Pink got made fun of for writing poetry which if you listen to it when the teacher reads it is the lines of one of their songs. Comfortably Numb is when he becomes famous and is trashed right before a concert, they have to give him something to get him up and out...it's all good.

And for anyone who cares "Pink Floyd" got their name from 2 blues musicians named PINK ANDERSON & FLOYD COUNCIL.

One of my favourite songs from The Wall. I like how on The Wall (and to some extent on the previous album, Animals) they had become better at deliberately utilizing Roger's and David's different singing voices for effect (Roger's range is more in the tenor range while David's is more in the baritone range, in addition to them having distinctively different voices of course), like in this song where Roger sings the part of the main character with David responding as the mother. Other great examples of this utilization to great effect on The Wall is Comfortably Numb where Roger sings the part of the doctor with David responding as the main character, or in Hey You where David sings the more calm beginning of the song while Roger comes in with his intense angst towards the end

these reactions take me back 40 years and make me remember what it was like when I first started listening, and Thank GOD I had so many years to listen to them over and over and over,, it will never grow old. and yes, sometimes i still get surprised as every once in a while a new message will come out of a song.
The message is each segment of the protective bubbles from mothers love was another brick in the wall, and did the wall need to be so high.

The line "mother used to wait up for me" ..I used to wait up for my two sons when they went into the city centre to the clubs as I couldn't sleep until I knew they were safe. When they came home ,they used to say "aw did you wait up for us mum" but I used to make out I had just fallen asleep on the sofa as I didn't want them to think I was being overprotective and spoil their night out. Very thought provoking song...still think I'm a good mom though !

Bruh! I’m so glad I found your videos.
It’s unbelievable entertaining to watch reactions to my fav tunes - and it’s even better when the person reacting can explain what’s great about the songs (probably) better than I can.
Keep doing what you’re doing my brother. The capacity to realise the literary genius in pieces like this from 40 years ago is rare even amongst that grew up with it...
Where is the rest of your content!?
“Mother did it need to be so high?” Is a reference to them wall’ that she built around him as a child. ;)

Could represent my entire childhood/teen years. It took 25 yrs to break down my wall.. its super relatable. And beautiful 🖤

Listen to the song "the day the tigers broke free". It is about Roger Waters father, which is the basis for the whole album of "The Wall".

Please please please check out David Gilmours Into the blue Live in Gdańsk. If you want to feel his music make you cry then this is the one. I have never heard anyone tame their guitar the way Gilmour does, he is a legend. Please do this one as I would love to see your reaction to it. Peace 👍

Mother did it need to be so high is referring to the restrictions and ultimately the Wall.

  • @reha1066

WOW! This sounds to me like a severe Mother, son co-dependent relationship. He’s a man now and struggles to break free from mom. He wants too but doesn’t want to break her heart. So he stays. He blames her though and the wall represents the barrier between the world and he and his mom. Jmo Thanks for this. 👍 Never heard before.

Roger Water is a poet and every song means something different to everyone. I first heard this album about 45 years ago. The meanings of the lyrics change as your life changes. Poetry baby.

Song is about an over protective mother sheltering her son too much.. she built a wall around him. Last line he says “mother did it need to be so high” referring to the wall she built..

I never really listen to the words of a lot of these songs until now. Rehearing them & listening to your interpretation makes me understand them better. When I heard these songs back in the day .. well, let's just say I was pretty much the last line of this song.

Listening to Pink Floyd albums a track at a time is missing the whole point really.
They are works that need to flow.
    Glad you enjoyed it.

Listen to it 500 times and you'll change your mind about what it's about several times. Most of the time you don't care what it's about, because the song is so beautiful. Focus on how the song makes you feel, not what you think it's about...

  • @seanlea7282

    👌 Perfect
You nailed it except for the ending, "mother did it need to be so hi" refers to the hight of the wall he's been inclosed in...... Heavy heavy song...... If you want to understand the wall fully you need to watch the film "the wall" it helps 👍

one thing i've learned since listening to pink floyd since '92,..you don't have to over analyze the lyrics. they mean different things to different people, depending on what you are going through in life personally. another great reaction vid! 😎
