So now I'm sitting here balling my eyes out going over all the memories of me and my Dad listening to Pink Floyd. He passed away a few years ago and it still hurts just as bad. I miss my Dad so much.

you guys are making me cry, that's not a bad thing. i'm 57 my dad died at 75, 6 years ago. God the shit he and my mom did for me and my brother. Six am hockey practices on a sunday morning in january etc etc etc. My computer is in the basement of our original house and all his books and art supplies and his tools are all around down here. I cry for a minute every time I come down here. I still share the house with my elderly mother, and we still talk about dad alot. Damn he was a funny, talented man. Sorry, I don't talk about him too much at all and i had to get that out.. Cheers from canada.

@jeffcampbell668 I understand what you go through in your basement. I inherited the property that I spent most of my life at as a kid to teen and young adult. Now everywhere I look there are reminders of my Dad and memories of time spent with him. My Dad passed away in Oct 9, 2019 from lung cancer and even now at 4 years and 1 day later the pain still hits me just as hard. My condominium and sympathies to everyone who has lost someone close.

Especially the last line. Some get the over protection but no one else has gotten the last line. They just here the word 'high' and think it has something to do with drugs. Drives me crazy because that line is what the song is all about.

At times I think this is their best song on so many levels. The build-up, the lyrics and their complete contrast to the lovely melody, the (extended) solo, the absolutely maniacal time signature changes from anything between 4/4, 3/4, 5/6, 5/8, 9/8, 8/8, 5/8, 6/8. It's madness rolled into a tune that sounds so simple. The drum fills and the piano. Love it!

Thank you - Roger's ability to write coherently from deep emotional thoughts about his own existence are an integral reason you two, and almost all who listen, come to consider PF as having intellectual depth. You couple that with the entire band's ability to engage with the experience of the lyrics and create a musical platform to deliver the "innocent" acoustic portion from Roger and then the "overbearing" guitar whine of Mother's responses. You put put this together with pointed and pretty background vocals and keyboards to fill it out. It's just a great production and a perfect piece in this story.

You are both really insightful. Thank goodness you didn't mistake this as a tribute to mothers everywhere, which is often the case with reactors. The dichotomy of apparent care while suffocating Pink is also reflected, as you pointed out, in the melodic nature of the song, which is in fact quite dark. Well done.

Both of my daughters are older than 25. I have talked to them about my love for this album and especially this song. A few times jokingly they would call Mother and asked me to pass them a brick. it’s a great way for them to let me know when I’m overstepping my boundaries and being a smother.❤️✌️🌼

Obrigado.

Pink Floyd's "The Wall", in my opinion is their most complete album, so deep and twisted, and the voice of Roger Waters fits perfectly, that mad and crazy sings and screams mixed with the guitars, drums and keyboards and synth, just amazing, I hope you can react to more songs of the album, but it has to be in order, so you can understand the story that's been told

This song is best heard within the context of the whole album
The album being a full story and not just individual songs; however, this song is set in the era of ww2 in Britain. The album itself is actually dedicated to their first singer, Syd Barret, who went crazy and died lonely and in extreme anguish. Much of which was brought on by heavy use of Acid (drug).
This song shows the overbearing narcissistic nature of his relationship with his mother, though Roger Waters said it was based on his experience, who really knows. As you can tell there is a neurotic overshadowing presence in the relationship itself.
Great song. This is one I love to sing myself, because it’s within my vocal range.
A very head trippy type of song for sure.

Since you don't seem to shy away from longer songs, such as some of TOOL's etc.. Danny Carey's Drum Cam, and you also liked Pink Floyd's Echos live at Pompeii, may I suggest a something song from a group that came out about the same time as Pink Floyd, around 1967. Give , this video a try, it is Iron Butterfly - In A Gadda Da Vida - 1968 (Original Full Version) It is a black and white video, playing live and is about 17mins long. Also, the guitarist in the band was only about 17 years old at the time. Thanks.

The initial idea of the Wall was to a large extent a autobiography of Roger Waters. Despite they removed later a lot of such elements some must have remained. Probably after the super early death of his father, his mother probably was super protective with little Roger and this could be the inspiration of the song. One of the best in the album, very beautiful song.

Thank you very much for this brilliant, informative video ❤, certainly The Wall Tour 1980. It shows the duality of Roger and David when singing, how they complemented each other very well, because neither of them is a good rock singer, it was certainly revised later in terms of software.
All the good songs from the concept album The Wall alternate, see English Wikipedia; David is not credited as a co-writer there; In short: difficult topic. I only saw them live in 1975+77; both with mostly rough vocals.
Tip, fits thematically and in my opinion is one of the first songs where D.G. really gets started on the guitar / can get started as a late addition, a predecessor of Echoes: Embryo played live in 1970+71.
There is a video, don't know if it's official; important a around 11'-version, not the original accustic around 5-version.

My brother is similar to your cousin. He's 56 years old. He served military from 17-21. Came back and bought a house. He's never been married. Never had a girlfriend. Has one friend. Talks to our Mother almost everyday. I haven't talked to him for twenty years

This song is about a boy and the “Wall” his mother builds around him to protect him.

I always thought this song was about a young boy's fear of having to go to war when he comes of age

i think a lot of people that have issues with all kinds of things in the world that effect them in negative ways, will at some point, look back to how it all started.. and of course see their parents, and other childhood experiences.. and theyll focus a lot on that, and perhaps blame everything on those early things, although its much more than that.. in the wall however, i dont think thats the case, but it is the first blocks of a wall that can be built.. not that one can go through life with no barriers.. because of course, the world filled with bad people.. but a wall can quickly become a prison, and a very lonely torment
