Bro...don't take this badly. You totally missed the point of that song. Its about an overbearing mother that cripples her son by being overprotective. This is a NOT a pro mother song and whoever asked for it to be done on Mother's days obviously has a weird relationship with their mother or they don't get the song either.

Do yourself a BIG favor, watch The Wall, the movie as well as the music are a masterpiece, it will make for a great reaction video for sure. and not to top it or rival it, it is very much worth the time to watch the wall live in berlin, with roger waters and a bunch of very cool artists giving their versions while a wall is being build on stage.

mother's gonna put all her fears in to you

I couldn’t help hear you say when listening to Mother that you hadn’t had that experience to feel the same as us guys that had the privilege of having a mother rise us , however I’m blown away with your beautiful attitude and that you didn’t go down the wrong path .
You come across very likeable and shows people that just because you never experienced the love from a mother or father that nobody can use that as an excuse to act that they can’t give love or have a child or treat a partner good just because they didn’t experience it , because you are a very good example that you can and you didn’t have any grudges or be bitter .
    I applaud you mate 👏.

It’s commendable how Polo is seemingly grounded, and adjusted to his place in this world, all the while admitting an absence of a nurturing Mother. Priveleged with a Mother that saved my life many times over, it’s difficult to connect with someone who wasn’t as privileged. This life is beautiful, in the fact that I’m never for the lack of experiencing new people and perspectives. Polo’s strength lies in a place that mine is absent of, and my strengths are annealed by circumstances that Polo, or others, might not have had. And all the while, as different as we are, we’re still able to find comfortable solace in music, or many other shared commonalities. The Sun celebrates our uniqueness to each other, but the shadow, hides us from each other.

I'm a huge Floyd fan. Met this album at age 14....in 1984. Used to get high and put it on after school at buddy's house.
We..US 4 made a pact....we would only try Acid/ LSD if we got ahold of a vhs of the movie....then we found out that a local theater was playing it at 9 and midnight one weekend.
    Went to both showings ...tripping.
My mother asked me next day.....
    How was it?
    Me...A trip.
    Her...what was it about?
    Me..a Rockstar nervous breakdown.
The next year in English class I did a class presentation on the poem/ song...the thin ice.
This album IS my early teen years. Can never put it on without happy memories of my youth.

If you watch the film, PINK FLOYD THE WALL ( 1982 ) you will have a deeper understanding of the meaning as the film version is just a visual telling of the same lyrical story but it does fill in some other holes as far as seeing into the mind of Pink Floyd's creative psyche, Particularly Roger seeing as it's his lyrical work and vision with this one.

it's all good Polo! You found yourself a nice big family right here, brother!!!
And as I'm sure countless others have mentioned - this isn't a song about an ideal mother/son relationship. This was an unhealthy relationship where the mother was controlling and overprotective to the point of toxicity. The album and concept of The Wall was the sheltered barrier that she helped him erect around himself as she deprived him of a normal childhood.
Upon going out in the world, The Wall became not just a defensive barrier, but made it impossible to function and relate to others and the world. That last line was him asking rhetorically did you really need to make that wall so high?
The song "Hey You" is a song that depicts how he is trapped inside the wall, yearning to have human contact, but his fears and anxieties, that was fostered as a child has made it hard for him to know how to lower that defense and cope. He's calling out to those on the outside asking for them to save him before he's lost forever.

The Bomb question is part of the backstory - that the mom lost her husband (the boy's father) from the war (WWII) and has imparted all her fears etc onto the boy as she smothers him with overprotective nature all because of her fears and insecurities of not wanting to lose him either.

One of my favorite bands of all time. I know you do these reactions one at a time, which is great for most things, but The Wall really needs to be experienced from beginning to end. The meaning of the album, is that a psychological wall between the main character and the rest of the world is gradually built "brick by brick" by various negative people and experiences over the course of his life. From the abusive school master, the overbearing mother, the loss of his father in World War II, and other things that are revealed in each of the songs, a man slowly isolates himself from the world until he is "Comfortably Numb", but finally in the end, all of his insecurities are exposed and the wall comes crashing down. You should also watch the film they made based on the album. The animation is incredible and will help you understand the meaning behind the songs. Enjoy!

Goodbye Blue Skies is another great song from The Wall. I encourage everyone to watch the movie, The Wall. It roughly follows the childhood of "Pink" (aka Roger Waters) as he tries to make his way in post-war England without his father, who was killed in the war. I think film is a masterpiece, and it really helps to explain the songs that might otherwise seem nonsensical.

Basically, it’s about Mother-Son enmeshment. The psychiatric term for Mama’s Boy. Written by Roger Waters. Supposedly about his Mother. An extremely disturbing song. 😔
I feel for any man that has (or had) such an overbearing and smothering Mother.
No man wants to have this kind of mother.
The Wall is the wall Mama builds to protect her son. From all and anyone she doesn’t approve of. And she won’t ever approve of any woman for her baby. Should he find one, Mama will make all her nightmares come true. I’m about to have my 40th wedding anniversary with a man that this song’s talking about. Mama is 95. I need a medal for still having my sanity.

I was not ready to have her go to that level yet so I had her come live with me for a few years. While she lived with me, I enjoyed introducing her to my music. Pink Floyd is my favorite band so of course she got a thorough introduction to them. Of all the songs, this one was one of her favorites so it definitely made our music rotation. Sadly, my mother passed a few years ago. Every time I hear this song now, it gets me so emotional. That’s what great songs do! Love you mom!!

Polo, I was touched by your comments about your youth, and having no family. My story is different, but troublesome as well. Wish I could buy you a cup of coffee, but I’m older and retired and on “fixed” income. Love watching you your reactions AND your vibe. You’re an awesome human being and did a great job raising yourself, sir. Best always!

Roger's and David's voices play off eachother nicely on this song (and on a few other songs from The Wall as well), with Roger singing the verses, and David singing the role of the mother in the choruses. Other noteable examples of this is Hey You, Run Like Hell, and Comfortably Numb (all from The Wall) and Dogs from the preceding album Animals. Supposedly the main requirement when hiring Guy Pratt as a bassist after Roger left the band was that "you've gotta be able to sing Roger's parts on Run Like Hell, otherwise you wont get the job" :p

This is off the album, "The Wall", which is a movie as well. It's a cult classic. It's all the songs off the album, animated at times, and none of the band members are seen in the movie. It is free on youtube.

When the Berlin Wall came down, Roger Waters arranged a concert there. He invited different musicians to go and sin Floyd songs. Sinead O'Connor gave an amazing performance of this song. (Listen to her "Nothing Compares 2 U" first if you haven't already, to have an idea of who she is)

Our upbringing and our lives could not be more different. I grew up with the music from the 60’s and 70’s you are just now exploring. To hear your appreciation for it and your willingness to explore music well outside of your comfort zone is inspiring. You have developed and open mind despite the challenges you faced in your youth and your efforts are truly fantastic. Keep on keeping on Polo.

My friend, this may not be what you think. Reread the lyrics and listen again. It’s not a love letter but a very dark note of an overbearing mother that contributed to his state or “wall”. This, in my opinion, makes this song so much more brilliant.

A lot of this album and many other stuff from Floyd holds a lot more weight within the context of the album. I’m sure this isn’t the first time you’ve heard this but the whole album just adds so much more. I recommend “One of My Turns” or “Nobody Home” next
