Pallet Pry Bar made from Scrap Wood

  • I recently had the need to take apart a few dozen pallets. I had a short time to dismantle them as they were taking up a lot of space in my shop. I wasn't proactive in ordering a proper metal pry bar (was going to be 2 weeks) so I decided to put one together out of some random pieces of wood I had hanging around the shop. It actually worked way better than I thought it would and made quick work of quite a few of the pallets. It took about an hour to make and less than 5 minutes to fully dismantle a pallet with it.
Of course, not every board survived, as pallets will be pallets and there could be some design changes made to this pry bar to further prevent splitting. But for what I needed it for, it definitely served the purpose and was a big help in cruising through the job.
In case you're wondering what I'm doing with all this pallet wood, I'm currently working on putting together a large, outdoor patio table. Make sure to hit the subscribe button so you don't miss that epic build.
    Thanks for watching,
    Ryan

Nice. I'd loosen the 2 middle rows first before the peripheral ones first to prevent splitting the ends.

New sub here from down under , pallet wood worker here great idea as breaking the beasties apart is the time consuming part indeed. Will try this build anything to cut down on the time breaking pallets apart.

    Thank you for this video!
The biggest problem (for me) with using pallet lumber is the amount of time it takes to break them down into useful boards.
This will help speed the process up.
And save my aching back as well! :)
    Thank you!!!

Glad you got some value in it. I doubt it will last forever or is even as good as a proper metal one but it did the job I needed it to do.

With the cost of wood only going up and an infinite supply of pallets kicking around, its got me looking at them in a different light.

Very cool pry-bar! Solves one of the issues tearing down pallets! Now if you can just make one that pulls the nails, too! Many thanks - keep it up!

What kind of wood did you use for the ( forks ) ?
I made one as soon as I saw your video, but used a pine 2x6x8 ft and broke the right fork after 5 pallets , but it did 5 pallets in 15 mins both sides . Took about an hour to make, with a nice smooth handle.

I made mine out of a single 2x4 and I broke a fork on the FIRST pallet!
I made the fork shorter in front (Less length from the tip to the cutoff) and longer after the cutoff. In other words my forks cut off about an inch from the tip.

Not having a band saw, I had to put a large washer on the inside of each fork. works for me.

Nice! But if you had made the middlebar of the fork and the long bar with the same wood, this would've been much easier and you wouldn't have to do the adjustments in 2:07 ro 2:40.

If u lift the centre nail points first before lifting the ends theres much less chance of breaking the ends of each board,i got this tip from another u tube viewer & it def works 👍

The tool is made wooden, it is rough and it breaks when removing it. Pieces can be glued but take extra work. I think metal work for this tool, it can be more good option.
Ofcourse the crowbar... We can use (already using)

@@ryanhawkins I find it useful. If the wood does not hold up with pulling spiral or ring shank nailed boards, the pattern to make one of steel has been provided! :) Great job of mixing oak, pine, and ingenuity!
