There is a line of hardware in most of the big box lumber stores. About 3/16" thick. Simular designs but beefy. Usually with rhe deck and gate hardware.

Oh yea,I know I welded an entire angle iron bed frame facing together on an old swivel base from an office chair and came up with a up and down,rotating bicycle stand that accommodates just about any bicycle.Also made my own car ramps.
I wonder if you coul use. JB weld between every brackets to strengthen everything up. That way maybe the angle brackets won't shift and not loosen the bolts. And also use the red lock tight on the bolts? What do u think?
Hey thanks for this, you just saved me $75 to buy one. I discovered yesterday that my pickaxe worked pretty well for most of the pallet until I got to the end boards. It still made it much quicker than using a sawz-all. What I like about your idea versus the reciprocating saw is that you can get the nails completely out. Thanks for the idea--I'm definitely going to give it a shot.

Nice design for the non welding people. Another way to make it based off your design is to add a T fitting on the end of your pipe, add two 2" long pipes into the T, add two elbows to that then add 4" long pieced to the elbows. Basically making what you made out of all pipe fittings. It would be super strong.
I had zero interest in this, but looked anyway. I love how you included the failure, and your solution. Every other do it yourself channel only shows how easy it is to get something done. The truth is that people need to expect things to go wrong, and roll with it.

Geez, I know right, I watched a "How to takew the back cover off the Google Nexus 4" due to the screen bring broken but apparently, they never told me to remove the SD card out, so I broke the back of the nexus... WHich they neglected to show in the video. I find it important to include the failures and stuff like that so yeah, I find it quite good.
I think a major reason for this is that people feel like they need to look like experts, or they won't be taken seriously. I am not handy, but I have handy friends, and when I "work" with them, I notice that things rarely go as planned.
Yep, I agree with the comment above 100%... I noticed that a big part in learning to use tools is the process of learning through failing and correcting, and I always have that nagging feeling that something is fishy when I see those videos where they use a tool and everything goes perfectly well. Thank you for bringing a more realistic approach. It not only makes it more believable, but interesting to watch.

I did the same but I used a 1" square tube, and 1/4" mild steel barr for spacing. I t is possible to get brakets that are stronger (1/4 " steel) but most stores do not have them.
Your improvement worked well and seemed ok but i was thinking....upsize to 1 inch pipe and 1 inch elbow and add 1 or 2 more L brackets...my biggest consern is after a couple of uses you will be constantly tightening the hardware. How has it been holding up over time?
Exactly, after I made this, i realized it needed bigger hardware. It held up well for a while, but then the brackets started to bend. My goal was a pallet breaker with no welds, and we did that, but there is room for improvement. Thanks for taking the time to write! eric.

I was thinking the same thing. Put a T connector on the end of the pipe and build up two fingers from there. That would probably work. Or you could also use some sturdier T-brackets. GardenFork his brackets seem rather thin. Nice idea and nice video!
Great idea - but I would have the brackets facing the other way, so the curve of the elbow makes a nice rounded fulcrum point, would mean less brute force trying to overcome that protruding end of the elbow

maybe you can put a angle bracket from the lower bolt on the handle to the closer bolt on the pry fork that will stiffen it up pretty good and maybe a little enamel paint color of your choice let me know what you think

Great idea! I tried the 100% galvanized pipe build and it kept coming undone. I'm definitely going to try this! One suggestion is maybe use JB Weld? Could help...I don't know
This could be a solution for me. I make a lot of DIY projects with palletwood. But extracting them, perfectly without broken boards, is stil a difficult job for me. And also Im not able too do welding or something like that. So, for this here I need only a drillpress. I bookmarked your video and maybe, sometimes I try my own one. Thanks formthe inspiration.
have you considered using strong pipe to build the bottom section as well? You could use two pieces of pipe joined by a 90 degree connector on each side. you could then drill enough holes in the vertical sections to use three or four heavy-duty bolts to connect all three pieces of pipe together.

I use a lot of pallet and skid wood, but until now I have used brute force and a sledge hammer to get the timber apart! I love the fact that you showed that the first one you made, failed. Thanks. I actually thought the brackets were still a little light, even with 4 of them. Perhaps if you welded the brackets together it would make them stronger. But them again that would defeat the initial idea of not requiring a welder. Garry
Nice tool boy!!! But perfect would be with 5 squares in each side of the tool. I am going copy your pallet's dismantler using five squares but riveting it to keep join the sides instead of screws and bolts.

Awesome job. Not the way I went with mine but this is still effective. I could also see it being easy to add onto it to make the breaker a little longer for longer pallet boards. Mine is good for short boards and I'm trying to figure out a way to adapt it for the wider pallet boards. I have a video out on it. it is pretty long but that's really only because part of it I show how to make it with with hand tools (hand saw), but if you skip past that part until I get the jig saw out, it's not as bad lol.
I was thinking as you built this that maybe another full length bolt in the front may keep it from bending and possibly cause both sides to act more like one solid piece, however this is awesome bro I'm for sure gonna try it cause I build appt with pallets and don't wanna spend 100s of dollars in pallet breaker lol
I love how he ground off the corner of angle brackets, so as not go gouge the wood, however, he ground the corners that do not touch the wood. The corners that do touch the wood are still intact, and quiet able to make dents in the boards. Other than that, very useful tool.
Nice job boss. However,,So far all I’ve seen is videos that are working with maybe two or three nails at the most the pallets I break up our bigger and usually have about five nails and the nails are the twisted ones so whether or not this would work on something like that I don’t really know but I appreciate what you did dude
Most of my pallets are from a floor covering business and the spaces between the boards are about 2 inches. I need a pry tool than would fit in that small space. Ideas?
Great Video , Just a heads up never hold a piece in your hand while your drilling if it catches you cant hold the piece and it will mash your fingers on the table. There are slots in the table just put a bolt thru the slot were the piece your drilling can rest against it . So if it catches you won't get hurt . Especially with thin pieces they have a tendency to twist and fly.
personally I just turn the pallets upside-down stand on them and apply even pressure to the board using a block.... works with all 2 way stringer pallets. I see lots of pry bar based pallet pullers.... they normally manage to split the wood. took 5x 3m pallets apart and de-nailed within 2 hours last weekend with only 5 blocks of wood and a claw hammer.

you need to put a bolt through both holes in the two plates forks with a piece of pipe as a spacer to make the forks stronger it will eliminate flexing
Eric, I enjoy your videos, and you have great ideas and solutions. You are much like myself. I noticed that you chose to use lock washers with lock nuts, this is not necessary unless you had other motives. It is much like putting Teflon tape on a hose bib. :-) Keep up the good work and the videos coming.
very nice video and great design on the 2nd, not so much on the first :). ive tried several different ways with varying successes and failures. yours looks like it may be my last tool to build. I may tack weld the brackets together as well as bolt them for extra insurance that they act as one. other than that I see no need to modify your design. thank you very much. ks

If you are not committed to DIY, the off-the-shelf product (just the head) is about $25. The full product with handle is about $60. I noticed the ends of wood seem to always want to split - the three 2x4 with sledge hammer method seems to take care of this. But for me, this is all theoretical - I have yet to go collect an actual pallet and try it out!
I think it was a nice try. But I think that including the actual cost would be a good idea too. Why? Because the cost of all these parts gives one an opportunity to consider alternative designs costing less. If you could obtain these parts at a low cost -no problem! Thanks for the idea!!
+GardenFork It was the brackets that bent just like the ones in the video when you only had 2 on each side. I used all grade 8 bolts and one other difference I used 5 in. brackets. I also put pipe insulation on the handle. I am planning on trying 1/8" thick steel in a similar fashion. I don't have a welder so that option is out.

Was looking to make something like this but have been pretty successful in doing the same thing using a garden fork.
a couple of people have found using a gardenfork works well. has to be a robust one. this breaker bar works well, needs some improvements. thx!
Clearly it doesn't work well as you destroyed it before you had even dismantled a single pallet and then had to rebuild it.
you could use a smallish builders square. not sure if it will be stronger but it's one piece of steel instead of the three brackets

PUT A LONGER BOLT IN THE HOLE ON THE BRACKET SO IT GOES FROM ONE TO THE OTHER DOWN BY THE ELBOW THAT WAY THEY ARE STABLE THERE ALSO

Not only thin but soft steel; tempering would do wonders if you have a torch snd some waste oil, harden the steel.

Good idea but restricted to narrow struts. in UK they are 4 inch wide across, this would limit its use, but good idea for small pallets
Use the bolt holes to add extensions on each side; 4" enough?

I don't use pallets, but I like hammers and pry bars. and i love leverage!

Put long bolts backed up with washers and nuts at the working ends of the corner braces so they reinforce each other.

you add extra bit on bar is other side i recommend adding a nail remover. both side can do the job

use 1/14" pipe, and commercial galvanized angle brackets used for strut, with 3/8" bolts. will never break

Nice job boss. However,,So far all I’ve seen is videos that are working with maybe two or three nails at the most
the pallets I break up our bigger and usually have about five nails and the nails are the twisted ones
so whether or not this would work on something like that I don’t really know but I appreciate what you did dude

Most of my pallets are from a floor covering business and the spaces between the boards are about 2 inches. I need a pry tool than would fit in that small space. Ideas?

Great Video , Just a heads up never hold a piece in your hand while your drilling if it catches you cant hold the piece and it will mash your fingers on the table. There are slots in the table just put a bolt thru the slot were the piece your drilling can rest against it . So if it catches you won't get hurt . Especially with thin pieces they have a tendency to twist and fly.

personally I just turn the pallets upside-down stand on them and apply even pressure to the board using a block.... works with all 2 way stringer pallets. I see lots of pry bar based pallet pullers.... they normally manage to split the wood. took 5x 3m pallets apart and de-nailed within 2 hours last weekend with only 5 blocks of wood and a claw hammer.

you need to put a bolt through both holes in the two plates forks with a piece of pipe as a spacer to make the forks stronger it will eliminate flexing

Eric, I enjoy your videos, and you have great ideas and solutions. You are much like myself. I noticed that you chose to use lock washers with lock nuts, this is not necessary unless you had other motives. It is much like putting Teflon tape on a hose bib. :-)

Turn the joint the other way round, that way it'll roll on the wood rather than dig in, like you did at the beginning when you said it was wrong.
it also puts pivot point closer to the board for more leverage
Even better, make it ALL out of black iron pipe & joints: 1" instead of 3/4".
very nice video and great design on the 2nd, not so much on the first :). ive tried several different ways with varying successes and failures. yours looks like it may be my last tool to build. I may tack weld the brackets together as well as bolt them for extra insurance that they act as one. other than that I see no need to modify your design. thank you very much. ks
good to hear, some welds would help. i wanted to try to make a pallet breaker without welding, so I did this one. i just bought a flux core welder, so i will do some enhancements. thx!
If you are not committed to DIY, the off-the-shelf product (just the head) is about $25. The full product with handle is about $60. I noticed the ends of wood seem to always want to split - the three 2x4 with sledge hammer method seems to take care of this. But for me, this is all theoretical - I have yet to go collect an actual pallet and try it out!

I think it was a nice try. But I think that including the actual cost would be a good idea too. Why? Because the cost of all these parts gives one an opportunity to consider alternative designs costing less. If you could obtain these parts at a low cost -no problem! Thanks for the idea!!

Just tried the version with 4 brackets on each side and it bent on the first pull when I tried to pull an end board. In search of a new idea.
+ALLxoxoxoxo did the brackets bend or the bolt bend? i found a larger diameter Series 5 bolt works better.
+GardenFork It was the brackets that bent just like the ones in the video when you only had 2 on each side. I used all grade 8 bolts and one other difference I used 5 in. brackets. I also put pipe insulation on the handle. I am planning on trying 1/8" thick steel in a similar fashion. I don't have a welder so that option is out.
