Hey Carl! Excellent video... I picked up a Grizzly lathe a few months ago and have found that it's the one woodworking tool for which I can't find a whole lot of "getting started" type material online, so I'm thrilled that I found your channel. Keep it up!!!
Excellent tutorial Carl, very well explained. The echos are getting a little less pronounced each video, you must be starting to fill the new shop with things! Take care Mike
Thanks for sharing your skills Carl - just one question please, how do you determine the correct height it the tool rest compared to the centre line of the work ?
Can you use Roughing gouge if the grain is not parallel to the tool rest? I have not had very good success and didn't know if it was me or the way I was using the tool.
+Carl Jacobson cool, thanks! I actually ended up getting a set of tools from my school a few days ago. They're the Buck Bros tools that aren't very good steel, but they work great as long as sharpened.
Next do the Spindle/Fingernail gouge. :) That one is messing with me bad. Just when I think I'm doing good, it catches and heads toward the chuck putting a nasty spiral on the work.
H Carl -just a note of thanks for all your valuable info - Am a novice turner and realy enthused -Thanks --Walt
I found your wed site. Great turning you do. Enjoy watching you turn different things, and learning from your tips.
Take care,
James

Could you do, or have you already done, a video on lathe maintenance? Tips on keeping it clean and the bed rust free? Thank you!
Thank you Lester, Do you have the link to the video?
No just the round ones. They work very well too.
Hi, I do use the roughing gouge for bowls sometimes but it's not recommended. A bowl gouge would be a better choice.
Hi Brandon, I'm going to talk about that in the next video. It should be up Monday.
great work

Hi Remy, I did one I think it was the forth video I did on this channel.
Thank you Walt,
Could you tell me the best place to get wood and what kind is the best please!
Hey Carl, what is that drill bit size?
excellent video as usual
Would i use a roughing gouge to round the inside if it were a segmented or stave cylinder???
Thanks for sharing your skills Carl - just one question please, how do you determine the correct height it the tool rest compared to the centre line of the work ?
utubephil100 For most of the tools, I have it just below the center. For scrapers I have it just above center.
Hi carl-I heard the other day that you could us the Roughing gouge for trueing up bowl blanks is this true?? Thanks

Can you use Roughing gouge if the grain is not parallel to the tool rest? I have not had very good success and didn't know if it was me or the way I was using the tool.
It's not a good idea it tends to rip the wood instead of cutting it.
Hi Carl, what kind of wood is that? thx
Thank you, It's 5/8"
Where did you get this tool? We have a similar one (shape and size) at school, and I want one just like it for my lathe projects here at home.
+Penrod Garage It's a Robert Sorby I got it at Woodcraft.
