- Emiliano Martinez is an absolute menace. Probably the greatest villain in world football at the moment, as well as the most in demand goalkeeper for a penalty shootout.
However, he wasn't always a superstar. How did this happen?

The problem here is that Emi is south american. When Tim Krul did it, everyone said he was smart even though he was harassing Brian Ruiz. When Redmayne did his thing to Peru, again, no one complaint. The problem here is that a south american did it. That's why they didn't want to change any rule before.
Goalkeepers got carded before for deliberate unsportsmanlike conduct in a penalty shootout so it's nothing new, jumping around the goal line like Redmayne did or throwing away the water bottles with the instructions is still allowed.

So true
Good to know.
The question is, if a striker can celebrate a goal, why can't a goalkeeper celebrate a save?
they mean about the minds game before taking a penalty , of course he can celebrate after saving a penalty dancing or something, i think this rule is stupid by the way...
He can if he is european, if you are from south america, then is a provocation
I don't see Any flaw in Your logic
Let's be honest, the "problem" with Martinez is that he's from South America. This type of behavior isn't new in football at all. Shittalk is always there, dancing for celebration is always there, arrogant player are always gonna be there, but it only "hurts" when it comes from us. I'm at least happy that the goaly gets to be the scary player this time, and in a team with Messi that's saying a lot
It has nothing to do with nationality, he just pokes the sodomized asses of a lot of guys who have big money on FIFA with his antics.

You know, contrary to how you were feeling, for the first time in decades; I was actually optimistic - precisely because Dibu was in goal for us!
My calmness might have been partly due to the fact that the Copa America matches start at around 6 in the morning in India; but, generally, I start sweating bullets as soon as Argentina gets to penalties. However, since Dibu has almost made it inevitable that he'll give his team a massive advantage in the pens, I've been calmer. Barring an absolute shocker from a collection of some of the best forwards and midfielders in world football, it's genuinely difficult to beat Argentina on penalties due to El Dibu.

Something most people not from Argentina don't know is the impact Dibu has had on children. It is amazing to see so many young kids wanting to be goalkeepers and using his shirt. It might not sound like much but Argentina has always had their eyes glued to the forwards (Maradona, Messi, Kempes, etc) but now everyone is looking at the back, knowing that if the time comes El Dibu will be there.
Modern Argentina never had a really world class keeper, think Romero and Rulli, they weren't really world class, Caballero too,Dibu's their best
Goycochea was pretty good back in the 80s-90s.
It's funny imagining that 10-20 years from now, every Argentinian keeper across the leagues would be doing the same shithousery as Emi did. Every shootout involving two of these keepers would be hilarious.
Are children willing to be assholes when they look up to him, or do you think they are smart enough to ignore it 😂
Bro I'm from India from one of the smallest states. Emi Martínez helped a kid from my state get into the top football academy because he shared a reel of the little boy saving shots and telling how Emi Martínez was his idol. The reels became viral and many clubs started contacting him and finally he is at Minerva Academy the top Indian academy free of any fees. We the football fans of Meghalaya are grateful to Martínez
50% save rate at penalties is insane
Imagine the mental advantage that gives to his teammates
Penalties haven't even started yet and you're already up 2-0
As an Argentinian myself, it's impossible to put to words how much we appreciate Dibu (as we affectionately call him here) and how thankful we are for what he's done for us. Thank you for this video!

I loved the video, and couldn't agree more with you. I'm a Colombian and most people around me hate Dibu due to last Copa América semifinals. We're up to play them again this Sunday. I find that hatred coming from double standards and frustration, more than the alleged "sportmanship", and hence I feel they're hypocritical, even if unknowingly. When there's no player in the world that fakes a fault or wastes time at the end of a crucial match or provokes the opponent in uncountable ways during the whole match like Uruguayans did Colombians in the semifinals just this week, then tell me Martinez lacks sportmanship, but up to now dirty play has been essential in football and every single player has resorted to it during their career. Even ultradefensive lineups against perceived better teams tend to dirty matches, make them slow and unplayable, usually ending in fights. There are teams that make "tactical" faults the whole game to decrease the opponent's rythm of play, and that's not lack of sportmanship? Naaaaah, that's "strategy". Bollocks. Then there's a keeper who's an absolute master at mind games, and, lo and behold! He lacks sportmanship. To me that sounds like hipocrisy and envy, because he's just waaaaaaaay better than everyone at it. And your'e also right in that, once the games end and in interviews, he's a smart, beautiful, sensitive guy. He knows it's part of the game, and that's it. I personally love and admire Dibu, and have a great time everytime I see him play. And that will not change if he beats my national team in a penalty shootout this Sunday.

quick and fun fact: Young argentinian football teams are currently having issues with having no frontliners because everyone wants to be a goalkeeper. Dibu(emiliano martinez) is setting a trend just like messi did back in 2010.
As a Liverpool fan, I actually like his style and am now a fan of his. It sucks that players who scored goals can go mental with their celebrations but as soon as Dibu showboats, it's a problem. Why can't he or any other GK celebrate a save they made or try to rattle other players as long as they don't do it physically and keep loved ones out of it? These are professional footballers who get paid ridiculous amounts of money so they should have nerves of steel when rival players or rival fans heckle them.
Anyway, his kind of shithousery is awesome, in my opinion. Here's how I see it: If he beats my team, I'd obviously be pissed and that kind of frustration will make you work even harder and when you face him again and win, it will just be that much sweeter and that kind of emotion is almost nonexistent in football.
Besides, if he can handle criticism and heckling from arsehole attackers who scored against him, then they shouldn't act like pissy little children when he returns the favour

He is the messi of goalkeepers. Every young player looks up to Emi and wants to be a keeper like him. He's giving birth to a generation of keepers like him
Funniest part for me is how they preferred Leno who’s way way WAY worse, to the point they got rid of Leno over Martinez who got arsenal an FA CUP and a community shield
Nobody wanted Leno and Arteta couldn’t guarantee Emi playing time. Emi forced his way out and Aston Villa swooped in for a malcontent keeper.

This just shows how clueless the entire coaching team of Arsenal was back in the day, even Arsene Wenger.
To be fair, hes an unknown up against not two but three or four tested teammates. Even Argentina almost overlook him if not for Covid downing their first choice. That’s his one and only break. *you got one shot Eminem

If they had just paid attention, literally half of Arsenal's problems go away from like 12 years ago. They were dreadful in between the posts back then.

The beauty of this man, is that he's a villain only inside the pitch. Outside he's a gentlemen, a very humble and good man. Also his english is amazing for being a spanish-native speaker.

Penalties are a psychological game, and since it's a "game of probability," mastering this aspect is crucial to increasing success rates. Martínez does this brilliantly, he's a genius!
Good video man! In Argentina we didn't even know who he was until his first appearence with the national team in 2021. His story is a lesson on persistance, strong mentality and vision. And yes, he is a badass!!!😝
Argentinian here, we fricking love Dibu!! he is as of right now, the best goalkeeper in our football history
He’s not a bad guy, he just does whatever it takes to win.

He fits in with their squad perfectly. They’ve always been unsportsmanlike hooligans. Starting with Maradona.

This video just tells his story in such a way that someone who literally used to consider this person an asshole for his antics can't help but somewhat agree to his methods, it did get his team results and he didn't even break any pre-existing rules to get those results too, football in general is all tilted towards glorifying the goalscorers, hence no player since Yashin has ever won the Ballon D'or, but, that's a different story altogether,A goalscorer can miss 10 chances and score a crucial goal to become the hero, but a goalkeeper can make 100s of crucial saves but 1 mistake somehow dooms their career in some cases (for e.g Karius) granted he was never one of the best or anywhere near consideration for that, but as a Liverpool fan myself even though the loss of 2018 was painful, it is just sad that one game costed him his career and all that followed, its high time the playing field is made a little more even, although his mockery of Mbappe during Argentina celebration was a little overboard and distasteful and that's one aspect perhaps he could mend, but, you can't forget how Mbappe literally insulted the entire south american contingent before the 2022 World cup, so that's a very thin line to tread on
Te felicito por tu criterio tan ecuánime, mis respetos desde Argentina 😊👍

Shithouse behaviour is just a football thing, the sport is filled with insufferable clowns, so there should be no complaint about Martinez weaponizing average football behaviour to better keep his goal and get the world cup.
As for Mbappe, the guy is a shitstain in football history, I haven't heard of a single player who has dealt with him who has a positive opinion of him. On top of that he actively picked a fight with Martinez' country before the world cup started.
So in my opinion, he got off easy, Martinez had every right to insult him harder. Strange how when someone like Mbappe displays clear racism and xenophobia he doesn't get any sort of fine or unsporstmanslike behaviour suspension, but when a white player does it they get blacklisted, isn't it?
Chilavert said "Attackers always celebrate and boast when thy score, why can't the goalkeeper celebrate and boast when he saves?"
I enjoy watching Dibu playing. In my opinion, he is one of the best goalkeepers in the world.

Only covering Martinez's proficiency in penalties is selling him short. He is an incredible al around goalkeeper and leader in general. He makes amazing consistent saves, and in this Copa America he's been outstanding. He's even started placing very precise long ball passes which isn't something we're used to from Argentina. I feel people are still uncomfortable truly rating and accepting Martinez, for whatever reason it may be, but the truth is he's an amazing all round goalkeeper and currently the best in the world.
He shares the best goalkeeper in history spot with Higuita IMO.
Honestly, never expected Martinez to get this big or be like this good. Throughout my time watching the PL as a kid, I've known him as that one guy on Arsenal's bench, and he's not exactly a teenager back then. He's been great nowadays.
ARGENTINA CHAMPIONS OF AMERICA! (Again)
I laughed a lot when you put the supposed route from Buenos Aires to Mar del Plata through the tropical jungle. Cape Town, Buenos Aires and Sydney are at the same latitude. Mar del Plata is 400km south of those cities. Now in winter we have temperatures below 0°C.🥶🥶 ... Emi is already a legend!

Love your video about the greatest argentinian GK of all time, and im 40 yo from Argentina. This guy chanced everything.
If I'm being completely honest, I can already consider him the greatest penalty kick saver of all time. It's one thing for keepers to be able to keep a few shots out here and there, I mean no one would blame them if it was inconsistent because gk's are already at a disadvantage anyways in Pens. Some of the greatest goalkeepers ever could never be consistent with Penalty saves during shootouts, usually differing performances between tournaments. But they would always receive a pat on the back as long as they were able to save a single Pen every now and then to which everyone would just say good job and sing their praises. But Emi, he's... different. Like no one else I've ever seen he exudes confidence unto his team because they already know he's saving 2 when the time comes. Let that sink in for a bit. A gk, who is naturally at a disadvantage, is the one who gives his team the biggest breather and sense of comfort at the mere THOUGHT of the whistle to start the Penalty kicks. I have never seen anything like it, and it works. His teammates' pressure is immediately alleviated as they step up to take a pen because before they even take it, their opponent has already missed 1. By the time the 4th taker is up, the opponent has already missed 2. Do you know how insane that is? And it's not just a performance like that happening here and there, he's like that everytime they go to pens. He consistently saves 2 kicks on the spot each time the match is decided through Penalties, hell even the national team themselves are aware of this phenomenon. It's mind bending, if he wasn't already the best goalkeeper to ever hit the spot between the posts for penalty kicks, he's at least firmly the best of this generation.
The drive from Mar del Plata is a freeway that crosses the pampas, or Argentine plains. Not a winding road in the middle of the jungle, lol.
It’s stock footage for dramatic effect haha
@@FootballIconic Great video nonetheless. Cheers.
@@FootballIconic the interior of the Buenos Aires province is not that different to the prairies they have in the USA in the Mid Western states. But, you know, you could also have gone by boat, through the sea right? after all, the city is Mar del Plata ("Sea of Silver").

It's getting harder for them to overlook his greatness now!
He's a national hero. As an Argentinean who was 21 years old in 2021 i grew up hearing my dad talk about how he saw Argentina win every silverware possible by the time he was 10. I saw Messi being criticized by not being able to win anything with the team while it was obvious that he was doing his absolute best. I remember very distinctly being on a bus on july 10th, 2021 and saying to a friend that Dibu was incredible against Colombia in penalties and that the only similar miracle i could think of was Goycochea. An old man next to me said "Yes, i think it was even better. He's gonna bring us glory". Dibu said many times that he promised Messi the world cup, and he delivered. Now he promised Angel Di Maria a last dance. I hope he gets it too 🥹
he did
He did. Fideo retired as four time champion playing over 120 minutes, most of those as captain of the national team. A legend, crowning his career with a last wreath of laurel.
@@Nerthos lemme tell you, my heart almost broke over those 120 minutes. Messi getting injured was the last straw, an even bigger motivation for this family of a team. When i think that wins can't get more epic, they do.
