Tysm. I bought my 1st one last year and it grew great until winter and it turned brown and was completely dead one morning! I was so bummed. BUT this spring it came back!!! Actually 2 of them(or maybe one came out of the side, but it looks separate?) so do I cut one off? If so, which one? The old one or the newer one? Is there any way to keep/save both? It is still pretty short though, maybe waist high. Should I be taking off the lower leaves? I do take off one once in a while if it looks dead or rotting. Thank you to anyone for any advice! 🌱 Great, informative video!!
This is so cool! Couple questions for you as i am considering buying and planting a banana plant. I love in Charlotte, NC in grow zone 8a (same as Atlanta's grow zone). Do you do anything to protect your banana plant in the winter or do you just let it do its thing? Also is there dwarf varieties you recommend growing in our region to produce fruit? 3rd, did you have to amend the native soil? I assume atlanta has red clay as well, just wondering if bananas do well in clay soil? Thanks!!
hmm mine don't like water... planted some in cloth pots and they seem to be root rotting and i only watered once in the last 2 weeks...moisture staying the same according to a moisture meter. i guess they might take time and more sun to wake up? been overcast mostly here in 9b
I just bought a house that has banana plants/trees and I’m trying to learn how to care for them. I love all of your videos but would love to get some info on winterizing them. Any suggestions?
Just posted a video on it. Worst case they die back to ground and start fresh in spring. Anything you can do to give them a little head start in spring will increase chance of fruiting
Exactly what time of year should pups be planted/transplanted in order to begin the cycle to produce fruit? Reason I ask is, my mom had Banana trees all over the place when I was growing up, and none of them ever produced the first fruit, even though they were brought up from Florida as fruiting banana plants. We were just to the northeast of Macon. So if I were wanting to grow bananas, what month would I start the pups? How would I keep them from being killed off by frost in the winter? Lots of details missing...
Hi Lancer, your best bet would be to grow one in a pot all summer this year, bring it inside for winter, and then plant it next spring. By that time it should be the size of the one in my video. It will then have a good chance to fruit by end of year
@@georgiafarmingwithfluevog 2:55 Worked on a banana plantation. You're stunting that banana plant by removing healthy leaves. The advice generally with banana plants is to let withering or shriveling leaves remain on the plant until they're completely dry and dead. If they've got green, they are still serving the plant by photosynthesizing. Is this an aesthetics issue for you?
If they are brown or have bad cuts in the stalks of them, then yes, I would cut them off. Sometimes you can salvage part of the leaf if only part of it is damaged. Ideally, you could keep at least one or part of a couple that have green on them to help with photosynthesis and generating a new leaf. But even if you have to cut them all off, it will still continue to grow new ones
Thanks! I sort of learned all that by accident with my own plants, and it's good to see my blunderings confirmed. I'm cutting off "pups" for my friends, now that they're popping out. 10-10-10 is handy stuff.
Once they get growing, they really start shooting off pups. I just got off 4 pups 3 weeks ago and now have 5 more on my dwarf namwah. Could start a lucrative business selling them for $10 a piece
You can give them too much water. I planted one in the spring and then we got a lot of rain and a bit of cod whether. The combination made the plant rot out at the base and the medium and small pups died. They did come back several weeks later but the one that I kept in a container did much better. Be careful how much water you give them when you first put them in the ground.
@@Gecko2007 Make sure you are watering enough and that the pot isn't holding water (has holes in the bottom). If that doesn't work, dump all the soil and repot it. Might have some disease in the soil
