It is very possible for a banana plant to fruit in a pot, I think the reason why yours didn’t fruit in the huge pot is because the pups and especially the big one that was growing next to it were taking too much energy away from the mother plant, you must remove some of the pups so that the mother plant can take most of the energy and eventually produce fruit
He did indeed say you can remove the pups, but he did not say you should or must in order to get the banana to fruit. I read your comments before watching and listened to the whole thing specifically with your comments in mind.
Your banana tree has pups sucking out most of the nutrients from the mother plant so the mother can not produce bananas!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Those pups should have been removed 2 years ago!!!!!!
You are a source of inspiration for more and more gardening . Very happy to see all the successes you have had all these years. Thank you so much . Looking forward to more of your wonderful gardening tips .
Thank you so much I was hoping that you showed us what to do for winter time I know it's getting cold and the leaves are starting to turn different colors on the banana plant definitely reaching freezing temperatures I wasn't sure if I was supposed to cut the entire leaf
What a great banana growing video. I am retired in the Philippines and I prefer the taste of the variety of bananas called Lakatan better than the cavendish back in America. I have been wondering about growing some and I think I will give it a try.
Wow what an informative video, thanks! I have always been fascinated with banana plants (There is something about the leaves I like a lot). When I lived in India, I had visited my uncle's farm which had huge banana trees and remember seeing the purple flowers and bananas. I would love to grow this plant, but unfortunately don't have enough space in the ground. I think I will just have to stick to growing vegetables in pots
Can’t grow bananas in the ground here, only in pots. Our winters would easily kill banana plants since it gets too cold here but they still do very well in their pots and are getting big
Fantastic video with great details of growing them from pots to ground. Just what the doctor prescribed!!!. Thank you for sharing!!. I am trying to grow them in zone 8 where the growing season is shorter. Learnt few techniques to get the fruits to mature. Hopefully this year!!.
One of the best videos I have seen on the topic. Please tell me when would it be the best time of the year to grow bananas on the Konkan strip of Maharashtra.
Just transplanted twenty banana plants in my yard, they seem to be prospering. I saw this video title and thought "I'm probably making ALL the mistakes!". Let's watch and see.
@@CaliforniaGardening Well, it's something like sixty stalks now, and some bananas have appeared. I did harvest two buds and finally learned to prepare the flowers. This has been a long path! The same bananas have lived in my yard for over twenty years, but not doing much. I moved some of them out into the sun, planted them in a circle with a sprinkler in the center, and have been very generous with fertilizer... people think they are a different variety, but it's all the same plant. They're all clones! I think they want more fertilizer and water than people can believe.
Mmmmm... I want to come over to YOUR house for dinner! ;-) Here on the Central Coast of Cali, bananas don't really stay warm enough (year round) to produce fruit, so we generally just grow them for the lush, tropical-looking foliage! This may be one of the reasons why some gardeners in your area prefer to grow the larger/taller varieties of the plant as well. :-)
Do we cut down the tree and remove the roots after harvesting the fruits. Will that affect the baby plants nearby. Thanks for the video. It’s very informative
Can you please be specific about the watering frequency? Like is it everyday, alternate day, etc. And how many litres per plant or may be some indicator like soil moisture level to ascertain the quantity of water that will be safe. I heard overwatering can cause root rot.
hi 🤗 how much yard/ground space do i need to grow a dwarf banana tree? i have a small backyard that has an apple, lemon, two cherry trees and two hibiscus plants. i would like to grow a banana tree, but am not sure i have the space. thanks.
I planted a dwarf Cavendish banana plan. I have it in a space that’s about 15 sq ft. You have to remember that you will get pups as the roots spread out.
Will they grow well and fruit in a heated greenhouse in colder climates or do you know? My Rajapuri pup got stem rot last summer and I ended up losing it. How can I keep from getting stem rot? Thanks a bunch

How can I propagate them? From fruit (banana)? even if the climate is not too friendly during the winter I will protect them. Thank you!
Super late response but i saw a person on reddit string large bulb Christmas lights around their tree as a decoration and it warmed the tree around 10°F. Seems like a cool idea
I planted a dwarf Cavendish plant in the front yard of our Orange County home. I have yet to get a full bunch. Most of the flowers don’t fruit, so I end up with maybe 2 hands of bananas. Any suggestions to help me get nice full bunches?
It probably needs more fertilizer. Also, remove some of the smaller pseudostems as they emerge from the root zone. They steal energy from the flowering pseudostem. I usually leave the 2 largest stems, fertilize using compost and a balanced fertilizer and mulch around the plant. Also, lots of sunlight & water.
I have my little banana in a 12 gallon. While I was watering it weekly like you said, the leaves started turning brown like it was being over watered. So I stopped watering it so I wouldn't drown it. I use my water meter and it still reads as "wet" I havent watered it in weeks. The leaves edges are all super brown and its frustrating. They need water but not too much water not too often? So frustrating.
@littllemisscupcake You may find that you need to water when the soil is dry. You should test if the soil is dry every day or every 2 or 3 days, especially if you live in a hot climate. If you're growing your banana plant in a pot, you can test if the soil needs water by pushing your finger to about an inch into the soil. If the soil is dry, then give the plant a good thorough watering. Do not water again until the next time the soil is dry. Another way to tell if the soil is dry is to check the colour of the soil in the pot. Wet or moist soil is usually darker in colour and heavier than dry soil. Banana plants need to be kept in moist soil (not in soaking wet soil) at all times. Remove the pups to allow the parent plant to grow well. Happy growing😊🌱🍌

You should of removed the pups in the pot ages ago as they are sucking the energy out of mumma plant and it would of gave you nice banana , mine is in a pot and it has given me heaps of yummy banana.
I cut a leaf of banana tree today ..is to hight for my hight ..to hardly i cut the leaf 5 feet size ..but i did not a freasb leave which is behind of big leaf of tree... it looks like rolled new leaf of size 50cm was cut down . And w Owner says omg u wasted my tree ..i feel so bad like i destroy this tree new leaf ..so what will happen . Is this tree cant give fruits for future ???
Buy dwarf cavendish banana: amzn.to/3jhGIZg

Thanks for the video . I have 6 varieties of Bananas growing in Mesa, Arizona.
We can also cut the old tree into pieces and place it around the new banana plant to give the new plants vitamin and minerals:
This guy is definitely from South India, all those dishes with Banana flower, Banana Stem are cooked in typical Andhra family
This was super informative thank you!!! Do you have any recipes that you can used the core of the banana stem in?? So interesting
What a relaxing and informative video! Thank you for sharing.
Most informative video by far! Thank you!

Thanks. Loved it. How about how to get your bananas to turn yellow after cutting off the mother plant? And how long does it take?
It takes just 3 to 5 days for the bananas to ripen, its quite fast!
This was super helpful, thank you!❤

That was very informative, good content, is there anyway we can identify the right time to cut the banana bud and the fruit from the tree?
Hey can you go further into cooking the flowers and core? Maybe a dedicated video just for that?
wow. we cook in banana leaf in jamaica (a few dishes of old) but I never heard of the flowers and core being edible!
What do you cook the banana leaves with?? How interesting 😊

You can also strip the stem for spinning fiber to make cloth.

I'm so glad!
Do you have a video on how you protect your bananas in the winter California weather?
I do not protect them in winters. When it's below 40 (very rare here) you can cover with a frost cloth
This was very helpful. Ty!

How do u protect the banana plant during winter ?
No protection needed in SoCal winters. However if you are in a colder zone, use a frost cover and mulch heavily

Are banana trees prone to insects or pests? Any advice for natural pest deterrents?
I haven't seen any insects on bananas
when do you take the bananas off of the tree? Do you wait for them to turn yellow?
Around 3 to 5 days
IS it ok to cut the lower leaves of the banana 🍌 plant. Will it effect the Banana plant
