We use the mother plant as compost after we harvest the rack. We cut the mother plant into 8-12", and leave it in the banana circle.

This is a well used technique. Cutting up the leaves and using as much around their base does wonders too.

Thank you for the breakdown. I have a praying hand banana and it has to be a few years since I’ve planted it and I’ve gotten no bananas yet. The maturity height on that variety is something like 14 feet though. I’ll make sure to follow your advice and hopefully I can get some bananas soon.

Around 8 years ago we had a stand of white oak trees that we had to have removed. The company ground the stumps and we had a very large area left over. We planted banana trees in the area - several varieties. We basically just let them do their thing and we've gotten a huge return. Now there are probably 50 trees growing in that area and we get a dozen or more bunches of bananas each year. I feed them by throwing all kinds of waste in the circle, coffee grounds, food scraps, wood chips and other plant clippings. If you get them started they are great producers and are very close to set and forget.
Bananas LOVE compost! Good idea on that. They are a great addition to spaces that have the room for it, and high producing too.
They do well, water-wise, when they form groups. They seem to thelp canopy and trap water. At least that's the case, currently, with my blue java banana trees. Right now, Houston has been in an heat advisory. The temperatures frequently go into the triple digits. I haven't watered them munch. Every now and then ill water by hand, just to make sure they don't dehydrate, but they seem happy, non the less. Also, the past out of the ordinary winters were no joke and the banana trees would not have survived. I took a machete and wacked them towards the top of the tree. I used its own leaves to surround the group to keep them warm. Banana trees are self resourceful.
In our banana patch where we're on the 2nd set of pups, all of the previous banana plants were cut down almost to ground level. The original banana plant we planted (and is cut to ground level) shot a new pup out of the center of it recently, and that thing is growing fast and healthy. I'm guessing the corm down there is huge. Out of the total of 20+ plants that have come out from the original, I've only removed 4 pups. The leaves can get a little crowded but all the plants are healthy. I've noticed that if you don't remove the pups, those pups won't put out as many pups as the mother plant. Our original plant had 9 pups. The pups I didn't remove only had 3 to 4 pups each, I guess because it was too crowded.
On one of the local hiking trails, about 25 years ago I came across this HUGE banana patch. There must have been 50-60 plants in that patch, and I'm sure a few people had taken pups home over the years. I can only imagine how big it is now. I'm sure the fallen/dead plants in the center provided a lot of nutrients for that patch. Sorry for the long comment. 😁

Thanks for the tips! I planted a Grand Nein banana this summer on my super big hell strip on a corner lot and it’s happy now, but I’m concerned come winter that north facing land will be too shaded out. I like your tip about planting more dwarf varieties so they can go in the south facing portion of the yard and don’t take over the veggie gardens there.

I have discovered that eating green bananas, boiled taste like potatoes. They are extremely healthy. I also make green banana flour. There's only so many bananas I can freeze or make jam with. See Jamaican recipes for some great ideas on green bananas.
Nice! I've done fried before but never boiled. Id have to add a few more trees if we find alternative uses because we are typically almost out of bananas by the time they are ripening!

I grew up eating boiled green bananas with garlic and olive oil it's very Caribbean we also great them and put them into a Masa for what we call pasteles a Puerto Rican version of tamales

I usually cut the tree at ground level just before cutting of the bananas off , Just cut circularly HALF of the trunk horizontally and gently lower it to the ground, and here you are , your bananas are just waiting to be picked.
Thank you! I'll try this next time. I just harvested a 77 lbs (35 kgs) bunch of bananas and it was way to heavy, so I had to take out 3 huge hands (half of the bunch) before cutting off the bunch. There are approximately 100 bananas

It matters where your located. Fruit growing needs are very location dependent.
My three year old tree grew its first flower, however the intense Florida sun burned most of the bananas except the first few..I'm so disappointed. The compost feeding is a wonderful tip. Thanks!

I live in South Florida. About all you can find sold here are the Cavendish dwarf trees. Any tips or ideas where I can get better, bigger, banana trees??
I don't use fertilizer at all and I just harvested a bunch of bananas yesterday, 35kgs (77 lbs) and another one of about the same size 2 months ago. We have approximately 100 bananas each time.

It’s in now or just top dress it ? Also I noticed your bananas are pretty close to each other . I’m having a problem figuring out where should I put my blue Java pup because I heard the roots can get up to 20 ft underground. So idk I should plant close to my other bananas or 15 ft away . I’m in zone 9b Florida .
The bananas are naturally grown close together and will happily intermingle roots. No need to space the far. I just too dress mine with compost around the base of each “tree”
What is the best fertilizer
Have bananas that fruited in October, winter killed the leaves on the stems with bananas, new stems have good leaves, but stems with bunches have nothing. Will the other leaves of the corm support the ripening of these bunches?

Bananas may grow in georgia if they have enough sun and proper soil, however we buy our bananas from a local grower here in St. Pete, not sure about Georgia banana growers.

I'm in jax. I can tell you that the leaves generally die, but your plant will come back towards the end of spring.
Great info. We've now got 7 in pots from original 3 we bought 4 months ago. Plan to plant a 10' circle with mulch pit in center in a few months. I've read to cut mother tree not to ground, but leave a few feet to feed the pups. Have you tried that yet?
No I haven't. I would think most of the photosynthesis is coming from the leaves not the trunk but maybe it would help short term?

I just purchased a dwarf Cavendish from a big box store. I have not replanted it but I have kept it watered plus it has had rain. I noticed the leaves are getting some black spots on them. Is there something this tree especially needs or just to be reported. The pot it is in is small and I do feel it needs repotting. Thank you! I enjoy your channel.
Black spots are an indication of a fungus that attacks the leaves of bananas. Look up sigatoka. If they are just a few spots, cut the pathes out and burn them. Do not add it to your compost. The fungus can spread.
Where is everyone getting there banana trees from? I have been looking for Gros Michel and Blue Java online and I'm not finding people selling starts, just the fruit. (edit: I'm finding plenty of cavendish...)

Yes, both can be planted together, however they will need plenty of space in between them for room to grow

It sounds like they would be ready! Typically once the pups are a couple feet tall they are established enough to be moved and survive the replanting.
@@TheUrbanHarvest make sure you learn the difference between pups: sword suckers and water suckers. Swords will produce while waters won’t.
Sword pups will grow faster than water pups. Both will bear fruits.
You don’t have a banana circle. You have mats. A banana circle is a specific method of growing plants in a circular bed with a pit in the center.
My recently planted Grand banana was about 3-4 feet tall and the storm knocked down a fence on it. It broke in half, will it grow back?

I once planted a dwarf cavendish on a 26x18 inches container. It was able to fruit but, when compared to planted on ground, the fruits were smaller. Due to limited space, only allow one pup to grow with the mother plant.
I purchased a potted Dwarf Cavendish banana with multiple plants in the pot. Should I separate them or plant them as they are?
Let the pups grow to at least over a foot tall before separating them!
We've had a dwarf cavendish in our front yard for probably 5 years or more now and no bananas. It gets plenty of sun and water. I read about the fertilizer need and so am now wondering what you recommend. I know you say compost, but our compost pile has dwindled, not enough to feed the plant and its pups. What specific nutrients does the banana need as I probably need to go commercial this time around? TIA.

I just bought some banana fertilizer off amazon, it appears blue in the package. You might try that. I am just starting my compost as well so I needed to find something else in the meantime.
I have a banana tree but have heard they are invasive so I was afraid to plant it..I guess the secret is cutting the pups then.
They are not going to take over and they aren't spread by birds or anything. I would think pretty low concern in my opinion.
Great video. Thank you. I’m also in Florida. I have about 6 plants of various varieties that have never produced. They grow nicely, but just never produce. Is there a way to figure out what kind of banana a plant is? I know one of mine is a plantain, that’s the only one that’s ever produced and it took it like 5 years to do that. I think I have some dwarf ones because they never really grow very tall. I’d like to know what I have and if they are edible.
Not typically no especially without producing. The dwarf cavendish typically have a splash of red on the leaves. Definitely sounds like a few of the sun water nutrient tips might be applicable here.
Dwarf varieties should fruit in less than a year. I agree with the earlier comments about sun, water, and fertilizer.
What if a pup grows directly out of the middle of the stump after cutting it down? Will that produce? Thanks in advance.
It is possible but the fruits might be smaller. I once cut a mature banana plant maybe 1 foot from the ground. It continued to grow from the center and bear fruit.

Yes! That's the beauty of it.
I've never been able to grow bananas on my property. Now I know why. I don't get much full sun and I always planted them near the tree line to keep them out of the way. That also means I don't water them because they are away from the house. So that's strike two against me. I did get some pups from a friend that came from good producing plants so I'm hoping my luck changes. Thanks for the tips!

Papayas need full sun also! Figs do great with some sun and dappled shade.

Some of the older leaves are totally normal. If its the whole tree something else is going on. They will brown with cold but its not the right time of year for that!

Hmmm did you remove the extras prior to fruiting? I’ve never really heard of that happening. Let it go through the maturation process and hope a pup shows up but you may end up having to source another pup to plant in its place.

My Bannana trees are going through my brick patio and somehow I get bananas and do not ever fertilize. Not sure how
Bananas will make pups naturally, they will fruit, and send out offspring around their base so you can cut down the mother plant and let the pups take its place. Maybe move your larger banana so that it can sprout pups away from the patio.
Bananas are actually much healthier eaten green like plantain, so you actually dont need to wait for them to ripen to eat. Of course, we all want to wait for some nice sweet ripe yellow ones to eat, but once your green bananas get a decent size, cut off a few months of wait time and just go ahead and start cooking with them and treat them like a starchy tuber or plantain.Then you have 2 types of crop growing from Bananas. Green Bananas have 70-80% starch and less than 30% sugar. Ripe bananas have about 1% starch and way more sugar.

Like the bananas themselves or the small banana tree? There are hundreds of banana cultivars probably more so lots of different kinds some small dwarf others big.
lotusflo - Look up images of Lady Finger banana and Apple banana. It may be one of those. I never heard of bumpy bananas but I've had the small fruited ones when traveling outside the U.S.
How many years does it take for them to produce fruit ?
We planted our Dwarf Cavendish from a small mail order plant, and it started producing beautiful bananas 13 months later. Removing all the pups but two, the next generation, stimulated the mother to produce.
My banana tree is almost 4-5feet tall. We water it everyday morning at night just 2 buckets of water each time as the soil doesn't seems to provide enough water.
But is it bad to water it at night?

I’m confused… I planted 2 banana plants a year ago, one under full sun and the other under mostly shade. The one in the sun is growing slowly, the one in the shade is twice as big as the one in the sun, and as big as the ones in your video! I remember growing up in South America bananas growing as understory plants… I also planted dwarf cavendish bananas two years ago in full sun and they didn’t grow much if any… so I pulled them out and replanted in places with more shade a few months ago, so far they look nice… Could the amount of sun depend on the variety?
Hmmm perhaps? But in my experience they all have pretty similar needs. Perhaps one of the other components was less in the sun?
I hear of other people experience they were able to grow banana trees very well in shaded areas. Maybe so.

I had fruit on my banana tree but the cold killed it how can I protect my banana fruit from freezing
You can wrap the tree in heavy blankets but that's about it, otherwise nature will do what nature will and some may die off from the freeze unfortunately. Try the blanket wrap for the next freeze, it is a good effort to keep harsh winds off the skin of the plant.
I don't know what I am doing wrong. For the past 2 years my bananas are not getting any bigger than you pinky and not growing big. I have done everything you mentioned in this video. I don't know what kind they are, but they are 15 ft tall and look like yours.
Try adding some compost to the base of your trees, perhaps they are lacking nutrients and cannot fully ripen?

Brenda - I am in the panhandle. We get cold temps in January but I'm determined to grow bananas anyway. I figure some years we get a freeze and some we don't so why not try. Well, I was cleaning up my plants and was about to remove a fairly "mushy" stalk when I realized it had a flower. I was shocked. There are 4 stalks total in that group and I was sure the flower was on a different stalk. That was only a few days ago. The flower opened today to reveal the first hand of mini banana wannabes. I hope the mother stalk survives long enough for me to get some ripe bananas.

Do you ever have a problem with squirrels or rats eating your bananas or other food in your garden? I’m in central FLorida and live in the semi country. Many squirrels play in my yard. I’m concerned they will eat my fruits and veggies when they start to produce.
I've had bananas for twenty years, but the pods dry up every time. The plants are 3 to 4 meters high. I've already given up and resigned myself to not knowing.
