Having the lyrics up for Pearl Jam songs really helps. He can be hard to understand sometimes. Gets a little mumbly when he gets lost in what he's singing.

The singer of Pearl Jam, Eddie Vedder, throws his entire being into every song he writes and performs. This was a very personal song he wrote about heartbreak in a relationship. If you want to experience more from them I would probably go next to the uncensored official video for “Jeremy”, a song loosely based on true events (imo, reading about it beforehand, so you understand what’s going on, can only improve the experience).
Pearl Jam came out of the grunge movement in the early 90’s. They are still going strong over 30 years later, recording and playing to sold out arenas around the world. It’s a deep rabbit hole worth diving into.

Don't worry about not hearing his lyrics in this song clearly. I listened to all their sons in the 1990's at least 500 times each and have a difficult time understanding him sometimes. But the lady is totally right, he is "lost" in this memory of what hes discussing. Hes talking about extreme heartbreak and he captures it exquisitey with superb metaphors and even better vocal execution

Nice job. The official uncensored video of their song Jeremy is absolute must watch. It won MTV video of the year back in the day and is widely considered the best music video ever created. It will get you reacting.

It's not hard on the album. It’s a similar tone. The doo doo doo part is from Pearl Jam. Unless someone else sampled it or there might be a similar sound.

I'm so pleased that Pearl Jam still reaches so many people. I grew up with them. What a great story teller..
    Consider Alice in Chains, Nutshell.

I believe the guitarist (one of them), Stone Gossard is responsible of the music on this track so he would be the melody maker in that case. Though of course Vedder was the lyricist.

And, sir, you are mostly right, they are a hard rock band, but this is one of their softer ballads. But that melody you are talking about is an original one. Otehr bands may have used it, or there may be otrher melodies similar to it, but Pearl Jam did not take it from another song. Its their own.
