I met an incredible, articulate and socially well adjusted American once, he was from somewhere in Canada 🇨🇦

    • @neuralmute

As a Canadian, I'm not sure whether to feel insulted by this or not. We *really* don't like being mistaken for Americans!
Seriously though, living next door to the States is like one of two things. It's sort of like living next door to the biggest bully in school when you're a decent, normal kid who just wants to get along with everyone. So you have to pretend to like him so you don't get wedgied into oblivion, but when he's not around you're the first kid in the class who'll say how badly you wish he'd just go die in a fire.
There's also Robin Williams' classic "apartment over a meth lab" joke. It's a pretty good apartment, but you're stuck over the toxic fumes, the crazy meth heads, the noise, the fighting, the stray bullets, the SWAT team raids, and the knowledge that one day, everything downstairs is just going to blow up and probably take you with it.
A few years back I was chatting online with a guy from Finland, and we were both very sorry about the countries that each other had to live next door to. We seriously couldn't decide which was worse - Russia or the States. We just knew that neither of us wanted to trade places.

There’s a great brazilian joke about it. At a certain point in history, the UN sent a message to all corners of Earth asking the following: “Please tell us what do you think about the scarcity of food in the World”. The eurpeans couldn’t answer it because they didn’t understand what scarcity of food was. African countries also couldn’t answer, for they didn’t know what food was. The americans couldn’t answer either, as they weren’t aware of what the World was. Lastly, argentines didn’t know what “please” means…

Good thing about Australia...they brought in all their Starbucks. and it failed because their coffee mannerisms are less preferable to standard Australian coffee shops. They closed down half of them, but are starting to bring them back just for the tourists. Suits us...we stay with our coffee shops, and don't have to put up with all the tourists interrupting our chats or Starbucks' inferior coffee. McDonalds was totally Australianised into Maccas and they created McCafe which serves a perfectly acceptable coffee.

The genius and irony of this bit is that it serves as a sociological double entendre of sorts -- making fun of Americans to a British live audience, but while doing so subtly pointing out all the stuff the Brits are guilty of themselves -- and delivered by an Irishman, no less. American education has been reduced to schools teaching children how to pass tests in order for their school districts to get the minimum, Federal funding that they need. Schools in the US haven't been teaching children how to think critically, haven't been teaching civics, how to survive in the world, etc. Combine that with the obsession of social media, the belief that reality TV isn't scripted, the epidemic of self-victimization, and that healthy food and living has gotten so expensive, and you get millions of people who are led by their basic instincts and a strange entitlement that they deserve a better life without putting the work into it.
I'm not saying that everybody from the US is like that, but the people who tend to be problem for themselves and everybody else refuse to engage in any introspection and identify themselves as the problem in their lives.

He never gave money to Harvard his alma mater on general principles and had a rescue cat named Polar Bear. He was a stately man and would stride down the street, cat on shoulder to play chess in Central Park. He wasn't suffering from lack of dosh and was financing a sanctuary for abandoned animals through his books. He got wind of Reagan for purely futile reasons planning to blow up a small atoll belonging technically in US waters containing a bunch of stranded goats. He had them all air lifted .... slowly to safety and got up everyone's noses loved every second.

@@taxesdeathandtrouble.1886 Lets stop and think about this. Now the US went into Korea to support the totalitarian South Korean government they imposed. The North with China's help pushed them all the way back to the sea. WHO was it that came and bailed you out of that? The first gulf war after Saddam tried legally to stop Kuwait from slant drilling but the US refused to let the UN or any body so anything because US oil companies were profiting off stolen oil. So who was it who helped the US out,,,,same usual countries. Next the war in Afghanistan, turned out it had nothing to do with 9/11 but sympathy for the US ran high so again US allies stepped up and helped out. As it became clear they had been lied to and were dying for nothing at all they all withdrew. The US like Vietnam lost that one too. Same deal in the second gulf war, US allies helped them out to take a country that was at peace with the world and no threat. The US fabricated evidence for a war of US Aggression, some allies knew better and did not help this time while others did. In the end it was just about the theft of resources for the USA. In all of the 20th century the US has not won a war on it's own. It's started many but no won one. You know this is getting a bit one sidded.

So which is it you're proud of, which do you want to share, and who with? You couldn't have made a more "American abroad" statement if you'd tried. It took just 20 years for it to drastically shift due to the globalization wave that swallowed cultural nuances and banished them to history. Just like it banished countless small shops cafes and businesses with character to the fading memories of locals who started believing huge ports of consumerism and hyper convenience was a suitable substitute.

Starbucks didn't work in Australia. There's only a few left as we have a strong coffee culture from the large Italian immigration period decades ago.

Oh, I love the UK! There is so much history there, good and bad, and you’ve learned from it. You respect nature, and your landmarks. It amazes me that you have castles over there and then gone through the horrors of bombings on your native ground! Americans are so spoiled, complaining about the slightest inconvenience. I just can’t stand the rudeness anymore. Been trying to get to the UK for a couple of years now. Doesn’t look like I’m going to make it. I’m in a wheelchair now and it makes me scared.. This next election is going to be bad! The US is circling the drain! Couldn’t even make it 300 yrs! Can I seek asylum in the UK?

I grew up in the UK. It is cold, wet, windy. The people are snobs, unfriendly and aggressive. They think they are special and superior; they love to mock others. The UK is ridiculously expensive and over taxed into poverty; just look at any UK high street to see how bad it is. Most activities in the UK are banned, and if not already banned are on the list to be banned. I moved to the USA. It is so much better than the UK in every respect. UK people love to denigrate the US but that is only to save their embarrassment on how bad the UK really is. The Americans do not denigrate the UK, no instead they enjoy how quaint and old fashion it is. Like something out of an old fairy tale.

As a Californian, I was horrified when Arnold became The Governator. He eclipsed an actual administrator, Governor Davis. But California loves its movie stars, case in point: Ronald Reagan. Currently we have a governor with movie-star good looks but who is also an actual administrator, Governor Newsom. And like Reagan, he will undoubtedly run for president.

I lived in England for some years. Great beers, nice food, cute girls. Sometimes I'd meet really hate filled anti American brits though. But really it goes true all over Europe and yes....even here in America. Good and bad no matter where you go. Great to have a few laughs at what you know is right about some people. 😂👍

Widespread Homelessness, daily mass murders, rampant violence, no healthcare, poor education, no real democracy, no safety, no freedom, no honesty, fake Christians, no infrastructure maintenance, no social welfare, selfish and greedy, no high speed rail, no social cohesion, racism, crimes against humanity, a destroyer of all - including itself.

I'm British myself, and yeah, there is a lot of anti-American sentiment here. Nobody bats an eye if you refer to an American as a "yank", but the second that you refer to a Chinese man as a ch***, or a Pakistani as a p***, or any of the other banned pejoratives, everyone loses it.
That has always bothered me. I have great sympathy for anyone who's maliciously made fun of for their accent or their country's history.

@@ParchedPinemarten Well technically American is not the correct term for someone from the US. People from North or South America can be called Americans and it's not uncommon for South Americans to use the term themselves. Yank or Yankee goes back to the pre independence era with the oldest written reference I could find was Gen James Wolf a British Commander famous for helping defeat the French in whats now Quebec. The term USian dates back shortly after independence but never caught on but with the internet it has become quite popular. Google several online dictionaries.
