Meikle Toir 5 Year: "The Original" Review - Peated GlenAllachie Produced During Billy Walker Era
Since Billy Walker acquired GlenAllachie in 2017, the core releases have all been made up of maturing whisky the current ownership inherited. Until now. The Meikle Toir line is the first set of core range bottlings produced entirely since the 2017 purchase. It includes three 5 Year age statement peated whiskies, and a limited annual release, the "Turbo".
In this video, I discuss some of the strategies GlenAllachie has used in producing this young, peated variant. I taste, rate, and review the Meikle Tour "Original", which was matured in bourbon, virgin oak, and rye casks, comes in at 50% ABV, and boasts a PPM on the SPIRIT of 35. How does it compare to the 5 Year Wee Beastie from Ardbeg? I'll share my thoughts.

1 Whisky per Region Challenge - Picking 1 Whisky to Represent Each of the 6 Scotch Whisky Regions
มุมมอง 1.5K19 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
I was recently nominated by First Phil Whisky to take up a challenge created by Jeff Whisky: to choose only 1 Scotch Whisky to represent each of the 6 Scotch Whisky Regions (the 5 officially recognized regions: Highlands, Lowlands, Speyside, Islay, and Campbeltown, as well as the unofficial region of the Islands). I interpreted this challenge to find a bottle that represents the characteristics...
Glen Scotia 18 Review - Overlooked Core Range Whisky From Campbeltown's OTHER Distillery?
มุมมอง 41014 วันที่ผ่านมา
Campbeltown is more than just Springbank (and its sister distillery Glengyle). It's also home to Glen Scotia, whose 15 Year and NAS Victoriana get all of the attention. The 18 Year is well-presented, and is a decent value. Is there a reason this 18 Year is a little overlooked? In this video, I'lll taste, review, and rate this whisky to figure out if it's a lesser version of the Glen Scotia, or ...

Speyside is home to more distilleries than any other region in Scotland. I set myself a challenge: to rank all of the distilleries on the basis of the quality, presentation, breadth, and value of their core ranges. I picked up a bottle of their The Sherry One, and, boy howdy, am I happy. I have some major reservations about many peated expressions, particularly those from Islay. So, I was surprised that when I tried Port Charlotte 10, it did not alienate me. I asked around and was told that Bruichladdich did not use Islay peated malt, but had peated malt trucked in from Aberdeenshire....reputedly the St. Fergus peat. So, I'm happy to hear that this is basically the same peating. My Sherry One is a wondrous mix of smoky campfire and chocolate-covered Christmas cake. It stands well with Benromach's Contrasts: Peat Smoke in Sherry Cask as an equivalent.

I've been a bit cruel in the past serving the unpeated Stitchell Reserve from Caol Ila for Islay (like quite a fruity Speyside) and heavily-peated Old Ballantruan from Tomintoul for Speyside (I once described it as "Ardbeg-on-Spey"!).

For that exception for Campbeltown I'm going with the Glen Scotia Victoriana. It's so over the top sherry forward which you just don't see from any other core range Campbeltown bottles. Many use sherry but it doesn't dominate the distillate like it does in this one does. The Victoriana is the Campbeltown version of a GlenAllachie release.

I am quite new to whisky, so what I am now typing should be taken with a pinch of salt, but are nevertheless my view of today. The peated whisky I have tried are Tallisker Storm, Tallisker Port Ruighe, Ardbeg Ten, Lagavulin 10 Travel Exclusive and the Lagavulin 16. And I am ranking them in this order. The Talliskers I find almost un drinkable (exaggeration but still) because of a clear underlying sharpness and roughness. The Ardbeg and the two Lagavulins are all wonderful and I believe one could change one’s mind depending upon the weather and one’s mood. However considering the two Lagavulins I will probably be choosing the 16 over the 10 every time. So depending upon the mood it might be between the Ardbeg Ten and the Lagavulin 16. I am obviously going to try the Uigeadail in the future. Greetings from Denmark

Buddy, well done on this audacious list! I remember how worried i was about the backlash when I made my Islay Power Rankings video. What's more is navigating how the heck to do the same sort of concept for the Speyside or Highlands. Well presented, well navigated and well done sir! Im very on board with Benromach, GlenAllachie, Tamdhu and Benromach being highly ranked. If my purchasing habits betray a favourite though it would be Benromach. I csnt get enough of thier whisky. Great job once again man. Cheers 🥃

Thanks! It was a lot of effort to just get this region manageable. I haven't seemed to have sparked too much of a backlash, so far... No doubt GlenAllachie, Tamdhu and Benromach are standouts. Appreciate it. Cheers!

Crazy that billy walker took a no name distillery to the top in such a short time…great series. Hope you do one for each region

Is the Aultmore 12 now discontinued? I’ve read and heard that it is. Do you know?

Hmm. It's still listed among the core range on Whiskybase, and on Aultmore's web site.

@@whiskywhereabouts interesting, Royal Mile Whiskeys has it as discontinued. Also, I recall an episode of AquaVitae recently talking about it being discontinued as well. I guess we are good for as long as supplies last. The 12 is basically MIA in most of the southeast USA - and so are the 18 and 21 OBs. They are all excellent drams!

Bold list Tim. Very controversial. I could argue both sides on any of the rankings but by process of elimination thr number one is the only one with a deep field of well presented whiskies. To bad they're mostly leftover inventory with lipstick. I haven't bought a 10 since batch 6 and I am trying to hold off until I know its BW's own distillate for another unpeated bottle to add to my collection. I am enjoying a rye and port finished as well as 2 completely different standard 12 years olds. On the other hand the MT range came to town recently and I always thought that highland peat is good stuff IMO. Someday I might even open the 2015 Glendronach Peated im sitting on.

I have 1 thing to complain about aultmore: all 500ml instead of 700ml

I have been getting Craigellachie 13 for sub 60 Cdn on sale in Alberta. Now I know why I have multiple different releases from your top 4 Speyside bottles. Benromach is my favorite of those 4 though.

Definitely a worthy choice. Really hard to separate the Top 4, here ...

I've loved your recommendations thus far. Obviously Lagavulin 16 is great and it broke me into whiskey hardcore, but I found your page looking for alternatives. Watched the video you did on cheaper alternatives and hardcore agree that Uigeadail is yummy. Got a Port Charlotte in my hands now, gonna head back home and give it a go. Appreciate your content and you're guiding me through this newfound love of whiskey ♥️

RIP Longmorn, Linkwood and Glentauchers. Some of my favorite Speysides. Good list though. Only disagreement is Speyside. I'd put them a little higher

I would include Ballechin 10. Savory, meaty, salty, fruity. A beautiful dram. A little lectin funk that some don’t care for but plays very well IMO. But can’t make this list since it’s a Highland.
