Beautiful magnolia. I have three trees in my yard, in Minnesota zone 4, and two of those trees will rebloom in fall. Beautiful chartreuse color, and one white. My white tree was struck by lightning when it was very young, and it stunted the growth, but it is very cool. It's only about 6 feet tall.
i like digging seedlings. keeping impact on the land down. id much rather start with seedlings or younger materials. more control over the process that way. thank you milton always sharing great info videos. 2 thumbs up sir!
I recommend seeking out a bonsai club. In the past my club received permission from a private landowner to conduct a yearly dig on open land. Not only was it a pleasurable day, but experienced members educated others on proper digging techniques, etiquette on covering excavation holes, and yamadori aftercare. These digs gave us very nice Ashe juniper and oak bonsai.
Magnolia you have are nice. Only thing with the flowers here in the windy city, if it rains, the flowers all fall off within two days. No rain and they last. Beautiful tree though.
The only trees I dig out are those in the cracks in the sidewalk or those in the lawn so that they do not get pulled out as a weed or cut with the lawnmower when I look for a tree. If on someones property, I always ask.
Main thing is the structure of the trunk. Secondarily is the appearance of the needles. Some juniper are pretty ugly…some have long trunks without lower branch…for example…I usually look for interesting cures.
I think it is fairly obvious why you don't want juvenile foliage on your bonsai. It is right there in the name. Creating bonsai means mimicking an old tree in miniature form. If your bonsai has juvenile foliage, the illusion is broken. In addition, since it is not so fine foliage, most people simply don't like how it looks.

I have a lot of small common juniper in my garden that im growing, are they good as bonsai material or is it strictly japanese/chinese that are used?

Noting wrong with all needle juniper....a matter of preference.
Can I use any type of screen?
I recommend mesh or fiberglass
