How to Make a Bonsai from a Regular Tree + Garden Tour! | Bonsai Heirloom

  • Hi everyone, Milton Chang here! A lot of you ask about seeing my garden, so here's a quick tour of my garden. As we walk through it, we'll pick out a tree and turn it into a bonsai. Contrary to "yamadori" which means gathering trees from the wild, I like to call this "yadori" because I'm gathering a tree from my yard. My goal is to show you that you don't need a fancy tree to create a bonsai. You can turn any regular tree, even if it's from your very own backyard, into a bonsai! It's that simple! I'll walk you through the steps of cleaning up the roots, pruning, and styling the tree to become a beautiful bonsai in no time.
I hope you enjoy the quick garden tour. Please comment below if you would like to see a tour of my bonsai court next!

My son is 7. He has been obsessed with trees, but all plants since he could crawl. First thing he grabbed was a dandelion! When he was 4 I invested in a bonsai tree for him, and he has kept it beautifully. He is growing 5 trees right now in his "tree garden." He plans to make them into bonsai. He also has a rose garden, and a flower garden. He hates toys. He only wants plants. And he watches your channel non-stop! When we go to get his weekly plant, the staff are so amazed by his knowledge. He said he wants to be like you, and have his yard just like yours when he is an adult. I wish bonsai was a more common hobby, so I could enroll him in some classes or something. But, for now, we will continue to enjoy everything you have to teach us. Thank you for these videos, they really are beautiful and truly have a made a difference for my son. ❤

Thank you! This is very encouraging! We all want to make an impact to leave something behind. I have six grandchildren…two picked out a bonsai to call their own. Encourage your boy to pursue his passion whatever he may choose when he grows up. :)

@kamruzzamanador5998 I hope all your wishes come true! I have raised both my sons the same. They both have an immense love for nature and plants. But, my youngest is more "classic" in his choices for playtime. Cars, playdough, etc. But he enjoys his plants!! I'm sure if you raise your children with respect for nature and love for Mother Earth, they will love her and all she has to offer. ❤️ Best of luck to you and the new Mommy! Such a special, happy time for both of you.

When you said, “when I marry her, I will grow you a rose garden.” I thought that was the sweetest most beautiful sentiment. My husband never buys me cut flowers because he knows I’d get sad to see them die. Instead he gets plants for me. There’s nothing better than sitting in our garden amongst the blooms watching the bees, butterflies and hummingbirds in summer. It’s such a joy to share that with him.

I've been helping a friend keep her garden under control for about ten years now. I realized I've been cutting down saplings that entire time, and they keep coming back, so I cut them again. Repeat. Last year I realized that was one way of making some rather interesting yard bonsai. Now I have a bunch of them in pots. I look forward to taking them to the bonsai club and seeing what they suggest.

Nice video! funny also because bonsai beginners often start with a juniper and when they look at it sideways it dies, but you happily prune the crap out of this one and make it more jin than green and it looks like it will survive. Plants are tough, thanks for showing that!

every other bonsai pratictioners: Junipers store energy in foliage, we should never remove more than 70% of foliage in one go.

My house border land that’s is a tree plantation, they have recently began cutting down trees & I have managed to get some great bonsai specimens that they had dug up and left or had damaged. They are currently plating new native trees once the land has been farmed so no harm done taking the smaller none native trees.

The three junipers I got from a construction site all died on me. But boy did I learn a lot from those over grown beasts. Took too much off and not enough healthy roots. Thank you for this great inspiring video.
Question- can you talk about why you don’t like wire on junipers to keep them more natural looking? And how you build the tree without wire. I feel that my wired trees often look so fake and over styled.

I grew up with my father doing his own irises and daylilies. He would cross pollinate to get the colors he wanted always trying to get the coveted black Irish that nobody has yet to make I hated the stuff when I was a kid but now I wish he still had it all he just got too old to maintain it and doesn't live real close to me. But his love for flowers passed on to me in the shape of bonsai. I've been messing with bonsai for about 12 years now far from an expert I don't even keep a bunch of plans because keeping a few thriving is hard enough in the Midwest. But it's very relaxing

Excellent, Brilliant & Beautiful....I find no other words to explain you and your work....your principles and philosophy of Bonsai & life are top notch...
From today I am going to adopt this quote ...
Why waste time on what is not best in life and also allowing mother nature to take care naturally...I think a person like you who loves mother nature can inspire & help this world to get back to nature and contribute something back to the world...

Milton, beautiful yard and landscaping. On the tree are working with two larger cuts what type of deadwood are you planning to use? Thank you for all your videos and time and knowledge that you share

Hi Randy! Thank you, but I'm not sure what you meant. I cut off parts of two branches. What is remaining will be dead wood, and I can carve them so to shape it. Is that what you mean?

I just got an olive tree from an orchard. For soil, would you recommend your general mix of 1:1:1 of sandy loam, peat moss, and perlite or 1:1:2? Also the tree has been neglected and has a lot of dead branches. Should I prune the roots now or wait till it recovers?

    • @bonsaiheirloom
      @bonsaiheirloom  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Why work on anything piece meal without a grasp of the full picture. Dead wood takes up space. You can do so if removing them does not in any way disturb the fibrous roots.
Either mix is fine if there is an abundance of good roots. If not, then use the mix I recommended for cuttings…equal parts of perlite and vermiculite…and then transfer to regular soil mix. Olive tree is quite easy to survive, even when grown from cuttings. Hope this helps!
