❤❤❤❤❤ Acoustic version is FIRE too. Ren went straight to the original family to get his permissions. He has been singing the Trouble so hard song for years busking. It resonates with him. ❤
That’s awesome! He is clearly an artist who respects other artists. In a world where people go out of their way to hide samples to the point where pointing out an obscure sample is known as “Sample Snitching” Ren is clearly a breath of fresh air.
Excellent observations, as always. You mentioned that Ren strikes you as not being a quitter. While true, he still is a human being. In a recent Q&A session, prior to the release of his new song, he was asked when he would start touring. In an amazingly honest answer, he spoke of the fear bought on by his relapse. It is this mixture of endurance, positivity and honesty that makes him such a loved person. Check out this cutout from the full Twitch stream: "Ren discussing his health - Slaughter House Premiere Nov 21 2024".
Nice to see you back again. Both Troubles and Ren's latest release Slaughter House were recorded while he was in Calgary beginning of this year when his treatment seemed to be going so well So putting Troubles behind him and also Slaughter House ( saying goodbye to the sick boi?) made a lot of sense. But as you know his health crashed drastically just a few months later and hes fighting to find a way forward but does seem more hopeful now than last month.
Ren's condition has stabilized now & he has sent his thanks to the community by posting this message of gratitude for all the love & well wishes he's received. The message was posted with a fan made video by Renegades from around the world, telling Ren what "Sick Boi" meant to them in celebration of the 1 year anniversary of its release . ❤ Ren's Message: "As many of you will know a couple of months ago I suffered a scary auto immune crash and relapse of Lyme disease symptoms which put me in hospital and left me temporarily blind in one eye. During this time I had to fly back to Canada to see a specialist and hit one of my lowest points of the last few years. It’s hard to put into words how heartbreaking it was to end back in that place after a year and a half of sitting in a clinic with an IV in my veins every single day , going through brain rehabilitation every day only to crash even harder than when I even started. Luckily over the past couple of weeks after a very strict regime of medication , and various alternative health modalities I’ve managed to stabilise and am planning my next round of treatment and stem cells which helped save my life back in 2016. As the prophet and philosopher Ronan Keiten once said Life definitely is a roller coaster. During this time my fans came together and made me one of the most beautiful videos. At the time I was too sick to really articulate and process what it meant to me because I was in survival mode , but I’ve been able to digest it fully now and it’s so moving to see such an outpouring of love and support. I see each one of you and you mean the world to me. Hearing your stories of how my own suffering has somehow lessened yours gives me a reason to fight , gives me alchemy for my own pain. So thank you. Sincerely. Thank you ❤". You can find the fan made video in the (Community Section) on his YT channel. Cheers 🍻
I've missed your take on things. You are so emotionally invested and your POV from your personal experience helps me see things I sometimes miss. Thanks for sharing.
Ren has become an inspiration, a beacon of hope, and the voice for the voiceless. It’s been so tough seeing him relapse and feel down, because who can be the beacon for the beacon? Luckily he seems to be past the worst of it now. He’s back spamming instagram with stories and he even did a long live stream after the premiere of Slaughter House. With some great news too! Our sick boi has recently been able to reintroduce rice to his very limited diet of meats and a few vegetables 😮 🍚 It might be a small thing in the grand scheme of things and everything he is going through, but it was wonderful to see him so excited about filling his belly with some carbs ❤
That’s what I figured. I merely suggested that Moby had also sampled it, along with upwards of 16 other artists. I checked out whosampled.com after I edited the video. It’s fascinating! One piece of music, an a capella vocal no less, has inspired so many artists to create! 😃
Welcome back :) The live version of this is also awesome, unique and much easier to understand :) Yeah the original Vera song is magic and I'm glad the recording has survived. A reactor named Wynand Fourie has worked with the Renegade community to create a song for Ren called "Love's Healing". I first watched it expecting solid 'American cheese' but found myself crying about halfway through (and Wynand is from South Aftrica so very little cheesy blather). Even if you don't have time to react to it, it is worth a watch. Ren himself commented that it had him in tears.
I didn't see if anyone posted this below, but a lot of people will be quick to tell you Ren did not use Moby's sample, but that he paid to use the original Vera Hall recording, which is true, but out of respect for Vera Hall, and Moby, I would like to add some context..... Vera Hall was born in 1902, to a mother that was a former slave, in Alabama, and later moved to Mississippi. Nobody knew of her singing talents until 1932, when John Lomax and his wife Ruby would record her on her front porch. John and Ruby were making their way through the South making an album called "Sounds of the South" for The Archive of American Folk Music wing of the U.S. Library of Congress. Vera didn't make any money of that recording, and though she would go on to do a few more songs and collaborate with a few artists in and around Mississippi, Vera never made a living out of singing. She married and had one child, her husband died shortly after her daughter was born, and her daughter died at the age of 19. Vera died blind and destitute at Tuscaloosa's Druid City Hospital on January 29, 1964. The reason I don't like to dismiss Moby too easily is because, despite Ren paying the Library of Congress to use the original, it's likely that none of us, including Ren, would ever have known who Very Hall was if it wasn't for Moby, unless you were maybe heavy into early 20th century Mississippi Folk Music..lol. The Library of Congress turned Moby down at first, he had to really convince them that her story needed to be told, and he would help to do that by featuring her sample in his song. It was shortly after that several media outlets started talking about her and several pieces were written about her, I think even a documentary. As always, loved your reaction and post synopsis, always interesting and very knowledgeable!! ✌💚
I'm new to your channel. I'm really loving your reactions.I have M.S. i hate that people don't like to complain around me. Everyone's pain is painful to them. We can't forget that. Whether this be illness, money troubles or problems at work. pain is pain.
I just wish we could do more for people who fall through the cracks. I guess sometimes just listening to their stories can mean a lot. Amplifying their stories.
Man, we miss you a lot, but glad you’re making time for your own projects. Thank you for getting to this one, Ren’s done so much for raising awareness and yeah it is hitting hard again (but he’s doing better now). I feel bad for you that you can’t delve into artist catalogs the way us civilians can 😄 You would learn so much from Ren’s acoustic versions (especially for Murderer, Troubles, and Animal Flow) and your mind would be boggled even further 🫠 Will drop a thing in your ‘cord re: how he produced the Vera Hall sample 🤘🤟
Wonderful to find another Aussie reactor. I absolutely love the production on this one, and yes, it hits hard knowing he’s recently relapsed (but is on the up again now 🙏❤️). Enjoyed your reaction, new sub from Tassie 😊
Good to see you back to reactions! I missed them. But I understand there are things far more important! Just glad to see you again! Thanks for the great work!
Great reaction. You show empathy for people in the same position as Ren has been in. Always enjoy your comments and nice to hear you’re doing your own music too. Thanks ❤
Welcome back! Great reaction to this incredible song! As someone who lives with chronic illness, this song hits hard but also gives hope. Ren is a true inspiration.
So good to see you back with some ren 😊 he did have a relapse but he's doing a bit better now and has been recording more songs 😂 you also should check out the acoustic version of this song and his newest one..... slaughter house 🐰😁🥹💜
It's good to hear you have ongoing creative endeavors! But also glad you found time for the reaction to Ren. It's a pleasure to spend some time with you and you always share interesting thoughts.
Exemplary discussion about not only the music and lyrics but also the specific condition that Ren is facing and the general conditions that so many folks are facing. And that's why Ren is so worthwhile and sparks conversations like we have here.
Not only the relapse, but he will be doing another stem cell transplant soon. I've missed your reactions. Back on74/Message in the Bottle retake. Or Slaughterhouse. Please? The past 2 months were horrible for him, especially after year and a half of treatment. His crash was so bad his PTSD was triggered. He ha a hyperbaric oxygen chamber, infrared sauna and othet things to get well enough for mire treatment. He did say that he woyld not be touring. He is too fragile to stress and his own perfectionism. He cried, cuz performing luve is his favorite thing.

He’s tenacious. He’s pushing for the better. ❤
He actually made part of the beat (that odd blobby sound) by tweaking the levels of the sample itself. So the sample is actually the percussion too.

Ren made his own sample from the original Vera Hall piece. Not a Moby rip.
Exactly

"elastic bands only stretch so far and then snap" so good, the whole Sound and the Video work to this Point and then, Snap.

Are you certain that is a sample of Vera, and not Ren singing in mimicry of Vera?
