Wowwee you picked up more references and nods to his other songs than almost every other reactor! Your knowledge of Rens work is amazing! Great reaction my friend!
The sword of Damocles comes from Cicero and translates as “there can be no happiness for one who is under constant apprehensions.” The king has such riches and is surrounded by wealth and servants that we would expect him to be happy, but he cannot enjoy such a life when he lives in constant fear of death via assassination. kinda a "grass is always greener," in a way. He sits on a throne and rules his kingdom with the constant threat of a razor sharp sword dangling above his head, suspended by a single thread of horse hair.
I really need to learn more about the Bunny Johnson thing. I also wonder how much he'll *really* move on from rap... will it be fully singing or will there still be rap-lite type songs like Hold On and Life is Funny (I sure hope so, since I love that style). Time will tell.
Your knowledge of his music just off the top of your head is amazing! You picked up way more than I did and I thought I was doing something 😂❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥
Wow... you caught (and explained) so many of the pop culture and mythology references and metaphors Ren put into this, that's amazing ! incredibly reaction ! 👍👍 I'm sure Ren learned about all of this (and more) while he was locked into his room, too sick to party, and perfected his craft, watched every TV show there is, read all the holy books and mythologies from any culture. He formed more new synapses than his brain damage could tear down... This man is so impressive. 👌
Thank you - and I think you're absolutely right. A lot of forced "free" time for an inquisitive mind like Ren's is a recipe for an amazing breadth and depth of lyrics.
Great reaction, Yes he seems to love referencing past song as does Tarantino. The Nephalin were giant angels (no wings) sent to earth to mate with women. I think, my memory nit so good these days. Subbed from London, England surprise surprise
From what I learned, God cast out 1/3 of his angels out of heaven because they wanted to follow Lucifer (Satan) to the earth. Satan gave them permission to mate with certain females on earth. There offspring were called the Nephilims and are a mix of human and super natural beings (the fallen angels). Their offspring were giants with great strength, power and authority. Probably brilliant as well, but evil. That would be from daddy's side. 😊
@@hansmolders1066 I'm gonna go with your explanation, what were the offspring called? memory from my religious upbringing (thats a can of worms, lol) is getting confused now, but I can still tell the time, (proper clock) just checked
@@DadDaughtersandDrinks he might not type it that way as to not give it away. What about in the 3rd verse when he says pain makes “men out of boys”..and then goes kinda into a R&B flow. Shout out to Boyz II Men?? I haven’t heard that anywhere either.
Ah, another good catch (and you're right on the spelled lyrics). I wouldn't be surprised if he had a Boyz II Men reference; he has the New Kids on the Block reference in Losing It!
a couple i really liked that you missed on your first go (don't worry, you'll find things on your 30th), in chapters he introduced Joe as a Legend and a Trickster, Loki (shortly followed by Legend), was the (Another) God of Mischief. Also another film/tv reference, and another resurrection. "A million degrees, graduate, semester, A b****t to the knee, till you kneel for The Emperor" Little Boy, of the 1945 variety, note it's catalyst method. A King of Kings/The Resurrected Students and Victims possibly more movies in there, but without another (noticed) tie in, i'm hesitant. Don't discount the imagery, tons of references there as well, for example, the 7 Rens (sins) also emulate a cell.
I've found my people! Thanks for pointing out things I missed. I only watched all of the chapters once (when I did the reactions), so I'll probably miss any references there (although I do remember him referring to Joe as a Legend, and Trickster sounds familiar as well). If you find more, keep it coming!
@@DadDaughtersandDrinks If i did, we'd be here all week. a few more for fun though, the sword looks a lot like Zelda's Mastersword. Lord of the rings with the visual of Damocles. God knows which sci-fi exactly with the embryonic vacuum bag, but his positioning also looks really close to that shot in Crutch. Passion of the Christ with the Jesus symbolism. Dexter, both the serial killer show, and the animated Dexter's Laboratory cartoon. And I have a feeling the bunny also partly represents the movie 'Us', which, no spoilers, if you've seen it you'd know the connection, but in that movie, the rabbits also symbolize rebirth. Can you imagine how much fun he had doing all this, then getting to see all the theories people come up with, and whether or not they caught this reference or that? As much fun as we have deciphering it, he's gotta be on cloud 9 (pun intended) seeing it from his perspective.
Yep. Hades - Ren has been thinking about this since his relapse recently, although the song was written back in April’ish. He always adds Easter eggs consciously to delight the listeners. Love the flow switch ups too. 🔥 Great reaction. Think you got loads of the references and well linked to the video. Thanks ❤ Btw you don’t have a small brain. Subbed for teaching me about Loki 👍👌
During one of Ren’s twitch streams he explained he purposely gives callbacks from song to song, usually there’s a meaningful tie between each. Did you happen to miss at the beginning where Ren had wished he’d delete himself. It explains much of the rest of the song.
I'm glad the callbacks are on purpose! I did hear him say that, and I see how it fits in with a lot of the imagery in the video (at the time, I think I was mentally kind of separating out the lyrics and the video). I'll need to focus on the lyrics without the video to really work through that setup. Thanks!
Ren has said that because of his condition he’s not afraid of dying, and I know he doesn’t want to off himself because of the pain that leaves behind, so it was an interesting video that he was trying (and did) to off himself the entire time🤔
What Lost All Faith reference did I miss? I've listened to this a bunch more times and caught a couple more things (like the "master class" reference to Love Music pt. 3, which I think is likely on purpose since the flow is the same in both songs at that part), but nothing Lost All Faith is jumping out at me.
I can't tell if this is a good comment or a bad comment. I also can't tell if you if you have a PhD in Philosophy (which would be an awesome almost redundancy) or a PhD in something else!
In the middle of your reaction and wanted to speak on you asking whether or not everyone would get the jekle and hyde reference. I don’t honestly think we care? We will learn about it later. I don’t think he cares when he’s writing it. I think enough people get enough references to stay interested. In his own way, he kind of makes us learn…which, I’m sorry…is pretty damn cool. Case in point….i bet you get the “Sword of Damocles,” bar now. 😂
Agreed it's cool that people learn new things (including the Sword of Damocles - yes!) Of course, when I'm reacting I'm not really thinking about what you care about or not, just giving my thoughts in raw form. In this case, the bar was buried well enough that anyone who didn't know the reference probably wouldn't even look for it because they didn't know to (as opposed to the Sword reference, which was clearly referring to something specific). It kind of reminds me of the "I'm a survivor, a child of destiny" line in Insomnia - I never really thought to google it because it wasn't clearly referring to something. And I think all but one reactor never mentioned that bar at all. But one reactor did call out that Destiny's Child had a song called Survivor which Ren was clearly referencing, and I was pretty thankful it was called out. I still think of that reaction every time I hear that line now.
@@DadDaughtersandDrinks all good, my friend. I was just making an observation. Nobody catches everything the first time they listen to Ren. I’m just saying that people catch enough to want to keep listening.
You did one hell of a job with the references.. Ren was referencing his past through the whole story (all the phases) of ups and downs, never finding a real solution. Funny your mentioned the eye because Ren damaged his eye for real and ended up in the hospital.
20 seconds in and already about a dozen pauses! Come on man! How can you appreciate the music when you're chopping it up into endless tiny pieces? I understand you're going to pause but every second? Every half a second? Let the music flow a little bit, at least! You're ruining it for yourself! You definitely completely killed the dramatic transition into the "deleting myself" line.
Truth is, I generally don't appreciate any music the first time I hear it. I know you'll probably think "that's because you keep pausing!", but it's been like this my whole life, while I've only reacted for a year. Pretty much all of my favorite songs took time to grow on my (including many of Ren's). It's just the way I'm wired. So when I react, I really just do that - react. I'm not there to appreciate the music in the way that I will the 10th or 100th time I'll hear the song. I'm there to give me raw thoughts. As for the "deleting myself" line, I still (after watching the video and listening to the song dozens of times) don't really find it to be that dramatic. Not that I'm not sympathetic (I very much am); I think I've just heard the concept done better in other songs of his.
