Love the pop r. Also, the Tiny torpedo is great. And while we're talking old school baits, even The Jitterbug still gets it done in my area. You have to change the hooks. But the river small mouth love a jitter bug! like you said, something you can work at a slow speed and pause
I catch bass on a popper like that 1 in the picture but I painted a chartreuse stripe on the belly with purple lines down the side or a walking style popper. Both have the tail weighted with hair on the hook
The best double prop I ever used for smallmouth was a Smithwick "King Snipe" (3", wood, thick metal props). Over deep dropoffs, I could literally call them up with short bumps. It could take 5 -10 casts on the same spot, before the first bite. But I'd catch more than one or two good sized smallmouths over the exact same spot. Kensico Reservoir, Westchester County, New York. I found it at Fred Sands in Van Nuys, California, for $8 in the early 90's. I couldn't believe it. One of those special finds. Till I eventually lost it on a big one at Kensico after a couple worthy years. Lol
I fell in love with a popper last season! I got 2 of my biggest bass on a cheap bass pro tourney popper that cost $2.99! They hammer those things! You can put them around laydowns and other hot spots and stay in the zone way longer!
I usually wait until after the spawn. I do use the little popper up until mid-November here in Northern Virginia. I have so many of most of these baits, so worth a try.
What cadence do you find works best for the popper (and I know, the fish will vote their preference on any given day)? But I’ve heard and had some experience with a more subdued pop on flatwater, a bit more vigorous when there’s some chop.
@@krispyk.1786 unfortunately, it's more of a novelty from my experience. There are other square bills that have a single knocking action with more of a hunting action, without the wobbly metal bill. I always found myself switching back to an ATV or Ott's.
Anyone using the Shimano Flash Boost Popper? Or other topwater? Love to fish it slow in shallower water too. Even Deadsticking it when there's a light to moderate wind
I completely agree a popper is probably the best bait to use right now for topwaters
Thanks for watching!

We fish up a creek on Hartwell. We’ve caught most of our fish this spring on a Rapala F9 floating minnow and a t rigged lizard.

For a slow presentation, over shallow water, the Shimano Flash Boost popper is my go to popper.
i like a double pop and rest
You forgot about the insect and frog tap water baits they work just as good and fun to use .
Thanks for watching!

In a video you recommend a small buzz bait. You watched a
Pro catching bass on them when
Guys were struggling during a tournament ??
yep it was at red river and opened my eyes to a small buzzbait
Hey Matt,
Have you ever used the 13 fishing jabber jaw? If not, what’s your favorite shallow water squarebill bait?
I think it's overrated personally.
@@secretbassrigs really? I’ve really quite liked it with the unique metal bill and added flash
@@krispyk.1786 unfortunately, it's more of a novelty from my experience. There are other square bills that have a single knocking action with more of a hunting action, without the wobbly metal bill.
I always found myself switching back to an ATV or Ott's.
i have not
Do you put bigger hooks on the smaller Pop-R?
Nope
I live in Oshkosh, WI when would you start using top water on lake Winnebago and ponds in central Wisconsin?
Whenever they're spawning
as soon as water temp is in upper 50's which could be very soon in some shallow backwaters
Anyone using the Shimano Flash Boost Popper? Or other topwater? Love to fish it slow in shallower water too. Even Deadsticking it when there's a light to moderate wind
im not sold on the flash boost
@@MattStefanFishing they're certainly expensive for such a small bait.
Off topic… do you find that if you see fish following your glide bait on ffs, they are usually bass, or will crappie follow it?
generally bass
👍👍👍👍👍
