Such strength and skill! This is called throwing off the hump, where they use the top part to make their bowl and trim that off. Then continue on down. Such skill. It is not easy to be this consistent in size, shape, underglazing, carving and glazing.

They are not made by mold, so they are much more valuable. These would be very sought after. Just the right size and shape.

I would hesitate to use the description “not always top quality”. These potters are what I would call folk craft artists. The work is not meant to be highly sophisticated. The expression has simplicity; and is created with a lifetime of knowledge within this realm. We are far too obsessed with perfection.
