This was entertaining and a good learning experience as to servicing a resmed Airsense. I'm a HAM radio operator and tinkerer and wonder what the requirements are to be allowed to provide service and repairs on CPAP as it is medical equipment. Do I need a special training certification? These are really so simple
I have been using a Airsense 10 for just under 2 years. I change the air filter monthly and clean the tubing about twice a month, but was not aware of possibly needing to clean the pump motor. Was all that gunk inside caused by not having a proper intake filter and also it being used by a smoker ??
Don't go opening your CPAP if you don't absolutely need to! You're right in the end: what caused all this was a failure to regularly change the intake filter. It was a filthy, gunky mess. I'm guessing it hadn't been changed in probably five years, and the weight of the particulate matter trapped in it weighed it down to the point where it wouldn't make a proper seal. That's the only way any air was getting through it at all -- it was going around it!
It's almost as if you've worked with electronics before; clearly this is not your first rodeo. ;-) Congrats on the find, looks like a great backup unit.
A few years back, Trinnov wanted me to review one of their Altitude systems, and I agreed to do so, but only if they would let me install it. They balked. I had to prove to them I was capable. During the installation, I discovered a bug in their firmware and reported it to them. Needless to say, Jon Herron was impressed. 🤣
I have this exact same machine since 2015 and was a little afraid to disassemble it to get to the turbine (not as strong as it once was). But thanks for the video. I might just try it and do this exact deep cleaning.
I have a airsense 11 , bought a sleep8 cleaning machine and bag ! I guess i'm suppose to still periodically wash my mask , hose and water tank ! Now to find out the cleaning machine and bag have been discontinued ! The whole process is becoming a pain in the butt !
Ive been out of the loop as far as CPAP goes, but my niece was part of a class action suit against one of the manufacturers regarding the crud that built up inside and caused her chronic issues. I should probably be using one but my experience plus her experience = lack of trust in the industry 😕
Thanks for this. I just bought a used Airsense 10 Autoset en did the same cleaning job. It's working, but the rotating knob somehow doesn't work. I can't get the push-click to work. Must have done something wrong.
Did you put the outer cover on before putting the knob on? It may sound silly, but I've done that SO MANY TIMES. Start at around 8:18 and watch from there. You need to put the knob on before putting on that outer shell/cover.
Hi Dennis! Always love your great videos! I wanted to ask you what online place you'd recommend for buying tubing and masks for the best value, for the Airbender 10, thanks! I find a lot of places sell at a quite steep price in my opinion.
Hey! As much as I hate to admit it: Amazon! I'm trying to de-Amazon my life as much as possible, and buying CPAP supplies there is dodgy anyway, since there are so many counterfeits. But one of the biggest CPAP supplies wholesalers in the U.S., CPAPSupplyUSA, has a storefront on Amazon and I know their stuff is legit. And cheap, since you're paying wholesale costs! amzn.to/3KhOFrw
This video should be reaired! Very good video for deep cleaning.... I also see 118k views.... I know over the new year and Xmas these machine new where selling at $399 great price!
That's why it's incumbent on everyone to either learn how to take the machine apart completely themselves and inspect it and clean it, or bring it to an expert every once in awhile. Don't assume that everything is good on the inside cuz it's probably not.
I don't care how well you cleaned-up the machine. I could never use it with the thought of all the hours someone else was breathing through it, especially someone who smoked, coughed, hacked into it. YUCK!
It's just the unit so it's fine as long as it's cleaned up. He replaced the humidity chamber, and uses his own tubing. Not all of your breath is going to go back through the machine.in fact the resmed masks have a flap that only opens while you're breathing in. Almost all of your air will go out through the exhilation ports.
Some of us choose to be guided by logic, informed by scientific principles. Others choose to be guided by their emotional responses. I know which one I am, and constantly through my life I’ve watched my peers (who choose to be guided by emotional responses) just fall behind in every area of life. Including, in their relationships with others. Has it ever occurred to you that the YUCK feeling, may be completely irrational ?
There is constant "positive" pressure coming from the machine into the tube and eventually into the mask. Although a very tiny bit of your breath might barely make it into the tube, zero breath makes it all the way down the tube and back into the water chamber... zero.
Too bad the old style spray cans of TV tuner cleaner are no longer available. A good investment for you to consider is a small ultrasonic jewelry cleaner.
We have only just received ResMed machines, and I'm looking for tips. To avoid the machine (insides) becoming this dirty, how is it possible to clean the inside. Or is it not possible?
Don't worry about cleaning the inside! All you need to do is change your filter regularly, make sure the filter door is in good working order, and perhaps get an air purifier for your bedroom if you think you absolutely need one.
good job on the cleaning!! wish you could help me clean my extra one that was given to me.. it blew out a bit of black debris last night? not sure what that was but i let it blow out until no more came out.. i really need it.. my other one have had for 10plus years and it was blowing hard and soft the night before and i couldnt breathe right.. felt like choking so i had to use the spare one.. maybe you can help me?
Ok, after watching this video, I took the chance and disassembled my Aircure10 Dpap yesterday Feb 21,2022. Same motor set up more or less. I have nearly 16k hours on mine. I do smoke but never in the bedroom where my Dpap is. (yes, mine is Dual pressure.) I changed the filter every 2 weeks and cleaned the masks/tank/tube every friday. Yet my motor looked just as bad, in fact worse than this one. I used 1 bottle, 16 oz of 91 percent Isopropyl alcohol. It came out jet black. I also used my air compressor, with a needle nozzle (about the size and length of a good toothpick, set at 20 psi to blow out particles loosened by the alcohol. After re-assembly I let it run for 2 hours. Before I cleaned it, it was NOT keeping accurate track of my usage hours, nor was it producing the proper higher pressure required. I would use it all night for 7 hours and it recorded 30 minutes of use. It had been this way for 2 months. Last night was the first usage since i cleaned it. Had to use the humidifier, but got 7 hours of proper use and yes, it did record that usage properly on the myair resmed website. Resmed needs to redesign this so the motor unit can be replaced, or removed easier to be sent it for a cleaning.
@AdventureswithCPAP after almost 3 years they switched mw from cpap to apap settings. Have you ever swallowed so much air from it you feel like the trunk of your tree is going to explode? Very painful
As a happily retired Respiratory Therapist, and a CPAP machine user, I always clean my CPAP machine first thing after waking. It takes me about 30 minutes to do it right. A clean CPAP machine, a 12mg Melatonin, and the 478 counting method all help me sleep great.
@@EvertG8086 The 478 method is a breathing technique that someone invented to help people that have difficulty falling asleep easily like a lot of people complain of. I worked nights for 25 years and once I retired, I had great difficulty trying to teach myself how to fall asleep like normal people do and never worked nights. The “478” is a simple system that someone invented. It goes like this: When you lay attempting to fall asleep, inhale slowly and count to four. At the end of the count 4, I simply hold my breath and count slowly till 1234567. After I reach the number 7, I slowly exhale and count to 1-8. Once you’ve counted to 8, simply repeat the previous 478 maybe more 10 times. That’s what I do. Simply relax and most people ease into a nice sleep. Look it up on the Internet and maybe you’ll discover something additional to help. I almost forgot to mention. Before I begin the 478 procedure, I take a flavored dissolvable Melatonin 12 mg tablet. Life is good. Hope I made sense. Good luck.

Isn’t that black foam you took out of this unit the same foam that necessitated the Philips recall? I’m asking because I have this exact unit and wondering if that foam ring needs to be removed. Anyone have info on this?
This was used by a smoker that's what everything looks like in a car, or home of a heavy smoker. Wonder what the inside of their lungs looks like. I always felt that the filter on these just a cloth, or cheap 1mm thick fiber mesh is not good enough. I wanted to make an adaptor to use two 3M cartridge filters from a paint mask.
thank you. very good. I got won. I use to replace and clean peoples old pc's. That is not normal dust. It iscigarette smoke dust. I use to get nicotine headaches after cleaning them.
Here's my baffling question.. Why is my side filter not so dirty but my inline filter gets disgusting? I use a better quality side filter that's similar to the inline filter make up. Does the airflow only come in through the side door? Resmed just like the model in this video.
i did the alcohol thing. and it got clean, but the motor whined about 2 days after. is it possible the alcohol cleaned out all the lube on the motor parts?

Next time, double bag the motor in a sealled food bag with the alcohol and a couple of cotton buds inside. Once sealed you can then use the cotton buds while it is flooded with alcohol without having to waste loads flushing it repeatedly.
For the price of these things, they find myself really underwhelmed by what’s inside. Cheap little motor filtration is definitely under par for that system.
Take a look at the air path. 1. Through the replaceable filter on left side. 2. Through motor housing and impeller. 3. Into the humidifier tank. 4. Out of the humidifier tank and to the exhaust. 5. From the exhaust to the tubing. 6. From the tubing into the mask. The water never encounters the motor at all.
Thank you so much for this video! I disassembled my daughter's machine and the turbine is definitely the most frustrating thing to clean; cotton swabs and paint brushes just weren't cutting it. So far, the most effective tool I've found to remove the dust build up is pipe cleaners. 👍
Can You use a inline Filter with Dreamstations? I still have mine planing on getting the airsense 11 when I can get money saved up. Sad that the prices are insane right now :( Thanks nice Video great work boss!!!!
Philips announced last week that the recommendation for use of in-line bacterial filters only applies to ventilators, not PAP therapy devices. It’s such a cluster-you-know-what. www.dropbox.com/s/10m7zat4u2ki8ww/philips-global-bacteria-filter-document.pdf?dl=0
It looks to me like the air passes over the foam, but isn't sucked through it. It is pulled across the surface of that ring as it exits those holes and does a u-turn, but most of it goes through the opening in the middle.
Hi, i don’t know if you still check for notifications but i might as well ask, i have found out that my resmed stops excerting good pressure to fill my airway up, and i cant breath out at the same time because is too hard to exhale, for some reason that happens at the 2 hour mark every night, do you know how i can solve this issue?
Hey! Question for you: do you wear a pulse-oximeter or a smart watch when you sleep? The reason I ask is, I'm working on a video now about the sensation that you can't catch your breath when you first put on a CPAP, and I've found that it's related to elevated heart-rate, at least for me and my wife at is. I'm wondering if there might be something that's causing your heart-rate to spike around that time?
@@AdventureswithCPAP sorry apparently i didnt have the notifications from replys on, now ill start to wear the pulse oxymeter, will get back to you in a later time, but about that you were asking happens to me, so i stopped using the cpap because of it, i was going through a comment section because i really need this to work, and saw an interesting comment about that from i believe is a technician, i will try to find it and will copy paste it here, but what i took from it is that we need to train breathing(like with the spirometry devices they give at the hospitals), because we breath shallow, the cpap can handle that fine, but as we are breathing shallow, it will be a moment when we try to compensate the lack of oxygen with some heavy breaths, that is when the cpap cant handle it. Hope this helps and hope you are all well, i noticed you have not post in a while
You mean removing the foam in the AirSense 10? I honestly just don't know. I would have to do some extensive testing to see if the foam has any effect on the flow-rate sensors. All I can say is this: looking at the internal structure of both machines, I think the foam is less necessary in the AirSense 10 than it is in the DreamStation. The AirSense 10 also seems to do a better job of responding to flow limitations. So if I were gonna de-foam a machine and attempt to make it work for me, the ResMed would be the one I would trust more to still function effectively.
From what I have read, the foam is really only for sound abatement. You should be able to remove it from the CPAPs that I know about and the only difference if any would be the noise level.
@@af1966 I just replaced the motor in mine. The foam was bad so I left it out. We couldn't hear the difference. Couldn't find a place to buy new foam? Anyone have any ideas on buy new foam.

Nice job. I would be tempted to use automobile dashboard polish on that exterior to make it look better.
ALIEXPRESS HAS THESE "machine fan ResMed S9 ResMe S10" BLOWER MOTORS FOR LESS THAN $100.
@@AdventureswithCPAP thanks. Was fixing to open mine up 💀
It's almost as if you've worked with electronics before; clearly this is not your first rodeo. ;-) Congrats on the find, looks like a great backup unit.
I was like.... (In the words of Martin)...you go boy!
I have the air sense 11!
I have this exact same machine since 2015 and was a little afraid to disassemble it to get to the turbine (not as strong as it once was). But thanks for the video. I might just try it and do this exact deep cleaning.
Thanks for the tip Dennis !
Really good job, man!
Great tutorial, enjoyed watching, maybe someday I’ll try, thanks.
@@AdventureswithCPAP yes I did. Thanks, it works now.
The humidifier would just need a good soak in white vinegar to get rid of all the lime scale. Probably as good as new afterward.
Is there a swivel assembly somewhere in a Resmed 10?
It's terrifying how CPAP devices can be so dirty in their interiors without one knowing the difference from the outside.
That's why it's incumbent on everyone to either learn how to take the machine apart completely themselves and inspect it and clean it, or bring it to an expert every once in awhile. Don't assume that everything is good on the inside cuz it's probably not.
Muito bom, muito bom mesmo Denis, minha apneia é severa e demorei pra descobrir. O cpap, me deu uma nova vida , obrigado pela postagem .
Que bom que pude ajudar!
The LCD sticker is still on there?! lol. I suppose I should take mine apart - it has over 16k hours.
He just wants it for parts
There is constant "positive" pressure coming from the machine into the tube and eventually into the mask. Although a very tiny bit of your breath might barely make it into the tube, zero breath makes it all the way down the tube and back into the water chamber... zero.
Like reusing combines used condom
Too bad the old style spray cans of TV tuner cleaner are no longer available. A good investment for you to consider is a small ultrasonic jewelry cleaner.
That was a helluva cleaning job you performed! Kudos! Still not sure if I would want to use it. Thanks for sharing!
Finally a good disassembly video! Just a question, what did u use to clean the inner electrical things and motor? 75% alcohol?
It was either 70% or 91%. I can’t remember which!
@@AdventureswithCPAP I just did a google, they said to use 99% isopropyl. Need to get me some.
@@westmibaddrivers2573 Be careful with 99% IPA. It is dangerously flammable. I'd guess the 91%should work.
looks like mine up till 2 days ago when i replaced the motor and cleaned the hole sys do to hrs on motor
Well done. I will try this some time
good job on the cleaning!! wish you could help me clean my extra one that was given to me.. it blew out a bit of black debris last night? not sure what that was but i let it blow out until no more came out.. i really need it.. my other one have had for 10plus years and it was blowing hard and soft the night before and i couldnt breathe right.. felt like choking so i had to use the spare one.. maybe you can help me?
Also looking for parts non smoking please fyi how and where i can pick up salvaged parts
May I know how long does it take for the fan inside the AirSense 10 to fully evaporate after cleaning with disinfectant alcohol?
If memory serves me, I let it dry for about two hours and then ran the CPAP for about an hour after I put it back together.
After 5 years mine is making a noise like a kazu when I in hale. I'm thinking a new mother is cheaper then the alternative
How can you try to use it when the dr prescribes a pressure and sends it to the machine?
Almost all CPAP machines have a hidden clinical submenu that'll allow you to adjust the settings.
@AdventureswithCPAP after almost 3 years they switched mw from cpap to apap settings. Have you ever swallowed so much air from it you feel like the trunk of your tree is going to explode? Very painful
@@RunningNotStopping I haven't experienced any aerophagia, so I can only imagine how uncomfortable it is!
@@AdventureswithCPAP well I'll leave u alone. I hope your gi is getting better 🙂
As a happily retired Respiratory Therapist, and a CPAP machine user, I always clean my CPAP machine first thing after waking. It takes me about 30 minutes to do it right. A clean CPAP machine, a 12mg Melatonin, and the 478 counting method all help me sleep great.
What’s the 478 method ?
Good luck.
BTW, I use CPAP machine for my mild sleep apnea.
This was great! I have the Curve one. Just started it. Was looking for videos on cleaning but came across yours. I like tech stuff like this so watched your video. Then signed in to like it and subscribe! Thank you . Music was too loud for my years though. Should not be louder than your voice. And not by that much. Other than that, great video!
The problem with dunking the fun motor in alcohol is it removes the grease from the bearings
I agree, was just about to post that. Is there a way to add oil/grease again...
We have a goodwill here where you buy stuff by weight. I find these all the time
Are all the screws the same size/length? I need to disassemble mine, to check why it's whining now, but kind of scared!
They are!
Awesome! Makes the task less-daunting!

Isn’t that black foam you took out of this unit the same foam that necessitated the Philips recall? I’m asking because I have this exact unit and wondering if that foam ring needs to be removed. Anyone have info on this?
Nope! Different chemical composition.
Any idea how to stop the whistling sound?
I noticed a "watch battery" attached on the backside of the circuit board...any idea what that battery is for?
I Believe, just like in a computer it's there to memory like the time and date, etc... I don't know for sure but it's my guess.
I bought HEPA filters for mine on Amazon. The factory foam filters don't look all that effective to me.
thank you. very good. I got won. I use to replace and clean peoples old pc's. That is not normal dust. It iscigarette smoke dust. I use to get nicotine headaches after cleaning them.
Hello, quick question, how long did u left the motor sinked in alcohol ? Thanks!,
Here's my baffling question..
Why is my side filter not so dirty but my inline filter gets disgusting? I use a better quality side filter that's similar to the inline filter make up. Does the airflow only come in through the side door? Resmed just like the model in this video.
I think it boils down to the fact that the inline filter is filtering very saturated air. That moisture makes it sticky. That's just my hypothesis.
I just got mine 3 weeks ago and I'm horrified it got that bad!! 😷😬😱
i did the alcohol thing. and it got clean, but the motor whined about 2 days after. is it possible the alcohol cleaned out all the lube on the motor parts?
They should make it easier to get to that foam piece inside. I would like to take mine apart but don't dare to.
- How to change owner on AirSense 10 ???❓❓
My machine I turn off and have a hunting choofing sound any clues?
I don't think taking apart your CPAP to clean the motherboard out is covered under waranty, LOL
My cpap just started whining not sure why, I clean it regularly it is about 5 years old hopefully I can get a new 1

Cheap little motor filtration is definitely under par for that system.
what if you never used water even once in the machine, would this do anything to it?
Take a look at the air path.
1. Through the replaceable filter on left side.
2. Through motor housing and impeller.
3. Into the humidifier tank.
4. Out of the humidifier tank and to the exhaust.
5. From the exhaust to the tubing.
6. From the tubing into the mask.
The water never encounters the motor at all.
I have a second hand CPap ResMed 10 I would like to get it clean which you showed in the video? Who does this kind of work?
Nobody that I know of, unfortunately. 😞
@@DennisBurger thank you,
Thank you so much for this video!

@@AdventureswithCPAP Thanks Again I agree a true Clown Car :)
Does the air going to the patient pass through the foam?
It looks to me like the air passes over the foam, but isn't sucked through it. It is pulled across the surface of that ring as it exits those holes and does a u-turn, but most of it goes through the opening in the middle.
Are you related to the “Wristwatch Revival” guy? Your mannerism are identical…😀
Hope this helps and hope you are all well, i noticed you have not post in a while
What percent alcohol did you use to clean the motor? It survived immersion?
91%. And it did, indeed!
Do you think removing the foam will cause any problems? I don't trust, no matter what they say (another material etc.). Thanks for the video.
