It gave me something to go on in my darkest moments, a small but undying hope that I would one day get back to the civilization and my loved ones. With trembling hands and tears in her eyes, the beautiful lady with wings painted on her truck opens the box. A brand new Bretling Emergency falls out. Tom Hanks: Fuck.

This is an amazing piece of engineering... I picked up my emergency 2 a year ago... it comes with a water floating watch case for in case your boat sinks... it can save your life from drowning
I don't understand Bear Grylls' idiotic mentality regarding this fine watch. I own one, have used it to save my life and, the life of my fellow officer. Without this emergency watch we'd have died. It is an incredibly well built, very tough and a 100% reliable timepiece. Today I wore it during our rapid response helicopter emergency service. I've had mine 5 years. Great video. Many thanks.
They won't replace the watch. They will only replace the internal antenna and service it but you need to agree to allow them to publish the story for their product promotion in publications.
@@Kit_Bear You have to return the whole watch, which by the way is two separate halves watch and distress system, and Brietling replace the module and service the watch at the same time return it back to as new condition and send you the watch back. Also once activated the modul can not be stopped and the extending antenna can not be put back the whole module has to be replaced. The watch will keep time but the module will be dead as the battery dies after activation period ends. Plus the sub dials become inactive on the analogue version of the emergency mission watch until Brietling have reset it. They left 121.5 in there because every commercial aircraft and a lot of private ones as well as ships monitor that frequency at all times. If a plane flies over or even near you it will hear you and can home in on the signal with standard RDF equipment.

It's so noticeable. I'd never get over it and I don't mind some minor finishing issues but that's truly objectionable. Did they blindfold the watchmakers on the assembly line? I was going to buy one of these about a decade ago and I saw similar crud on a yellow dial.
Another category where Seiko made the start with the design and produce of the first analog-digital watch in the world (H558-5009) in the 1980's. Breitling just took it one step further than that. Excellent work as always. Very useful and informative video also.

It's not new. They've shown many watches on here that have various levels of corrosion on hands, numbers, etc. The big names. The very, very expensive names. Maybe that watch was assembled on a rainy, humid day. Either that or it was serviced by an average Joe at a local jeweler instead of being sent in. No way it came out of the factory this way.
I used to own the original model of this watch but with a secondary dial on the strap, paranoid every time I wore it in case I somehow unscrewed the transmitter cap. Came in a huge box with a tester for the transmitter.

I've not heard about this watch for donkey's years until watching this video.
I'd imagine most of the older watches ( pre dual-frequency) are still valid survival watches, providing you get fresh batteries in the transmitter. 121.5 still works in North America for civilian Pilots, and is still constantly monitored. It's limitation is "line-of-sight", so you literally have to get as high up as you can before you pull the antenna out to activate the ELT transmitter. Many aircraft that have dual radios, especially ones that fly in the Far North, will keep one on 121.5 to monitor for emergencies. They can detect a beacon like that to nearly the horizon, within the limitations of the output of the transmitter. Most Canadian Bush pilots know to check that frequency after landing, to see if they have accidentally set-off their own ELT after a hard landing, with the side-benefit of checking for an emergency for someone else.
If you fly, having an ELT on your arm is a good thing. The $600 battery replacement not so much. Plus, if you use it in a plane crash and survive, Breitling will replace it for free. Sadly, they do not upgrade the earlier model [mine] for the dual band model.
