After taking a 2hour train journey to my first interview in London while visiting by myself for the first time... Upon reaching Victoria station I stopped by a Pret for a coffee before hopping on the tube to the interview, strangely enough I was given it for free. To this day I will never forget how my first experience of London and the real working world was a positive one thanks to the brand, the 'act of kindness' boosted my mood and continued throughout the interview and the rest of the day. And for that reason I will forever pick Pret over any other coffee shop in the city.

Strange, I have nearly similar connection with Pret when came first time to London for interview, it was in Mayfair. It was nearly 10 years ago, still working for the very same company and proudly. The interview was not with Pret. :)

Ive seen every single episode of this podcast ever made, I never miss one. And yet each time, im still so incredibly impressed by the level of transparency and authenticity we get to see from all the guests. In little more than an hour, I walk away with a totally new and different perception of these people, usually always an insane amount of respect as well.
I didn't know much about Julian before watching this but he made me laugh, smile, cry a bit, sit here in awe, and also fired up my motivation. What an amazing and genuine individual. Thank you Steve for giving us the opportunity to see a little further into the lives and personalities of these amazing people.
    What a privilege.

I haven't previously heard anything about Julian Metcalfe, obviously knew of Pret as my brother works within many of the London branches as a freelance sound engineer who has always commented on how good their food is. I'm so in awe of Julian and he's single handedly changed my opinion about what type of person achieves such phenomenal success as I find him incredibly giving, authentic, kind and generous in his outlook, traits that aren't always associated with company founders or high flying entrepreneurs. I absolutely loved this conversation and I believe Steven did too as he couldn't stop laughing at times, Julian has a way he connects with you that is really heartwarming to watch. All your hard work to create these fantastic podcasts is greatly appreciated as I'm learning so much from them. Thank you

Always like the food in Pret. Many moons ago, I was once getting a coffee in a Pret in London, it was about 5 pm, the member of staff asked if I was just finishing work, I replied, "I'm just starting." "For that sir you can have this for free." I never forgot about that, it was a tiny gesture, but that random gesture lasted a long time for me, and have told many people that story since. Really interesting interview.

I worked in the Birmingham flagship Pret in the 90's. I can say with nostalgia that the Pret culture was magical. I was well trained and nurtured in the role. Well paid and valued and during my time there I embodied the 'Passionate About Food' ethos wholeheartedly. It was a great job for my late teens and taught me the significance/importance of 'good' management. The annual staff party held in London was brilliant, no expense spared a real employee 'pat on the back' 😊

I personally worked for itsu in London for almost 2 years, and I really admire the way the shops are run and the management practices. You blame yourself alot aswell being so young it is hard to understand it any other way. But it gives you a love and care for others that alot of people do not have. I used to work for Pret… I was sacked because of absences - My step-son was hospitalised for weeks, so I had to stay at home with our newborn baby while his mother was effectively living in hospital… Disciplinary meetings took place without my knowledge - Being knee-deep in Nappies and Throw-Up, I didn’t keep up with my emails… So the wonderful HR people at Pret pressed that little button near the bottom of the screen that effectively blacklisted me from ever working for them again… and I loved working for them - my manager, my colleagues, good customers… I wish I could meet this man and pick his ear over a Flat White.

I didn’t know who this man was before watching, but he’s incredibly endearing. And I liked the fact that you respected his wish not to talk about certain parts of his life.
