Me and my friends all together got upgraded to iPhone 11 in last year May but we are disappointed with this update as this is only from the models 12 n above. 😐

Iphone 11 is barely over 2 years old. This feature should’ve been made available on 11.

For anyone going, "This was too late / You guys should have released it earlier":
It's a bit complicated making a face recognition system that utilizes actual depth technology, and then having to perfect that so that it's *absolutely* secure, and on top of that, having to make sure that it works and testing it vigorously. Apple took their time with this, though. I think the best way to respond to those comments is by asking a question; do you want Face ID with a Mask to come out earlier and rushed with possibly a severe lack of security, or a perfected version of it that is absolutely secure?

@@trix_003 it’s probably related to the neural engine rather than the camera system
Let’s remember that the neural engine on iPhone X was sort of a beta, the one in the iPhone XS being their actual first attempt, and you can see how much they bragged about the neural engine on the a14 chip of the iPhone 12, considering it took them the whole pandemic to roll this out im pretty sure the whole process is really complex under the hood, needing a more powerful neural engine
That’s just what I think. Let’s be honest, most countries aren’t even using masks anymore, I don’t think this will be the tipping point for many to upgrade.

Why not iPhone 11 and before with FaceID? I'm sure older generation of FaceID can also support this feature.

@Akhilesh Sattanathan probably. It’s like the iPhone 8 & X not getting the iOS 15 features such as Live Text, Offline Siri support, blurred background for FaceTime etc. when they were only 4 years old when iOS 15 got released on September 20, 2021
My brother is a doctor and he surely needs that update for his iPhone 11. And 11 is not that old , so think about your old phones too apple. And what’s about my iPad pro?! iPad pro also don’t have this feature, unbelievable!

@@s._a_2002art The iphone 11 was made in 2019 when covid didnt exist, the iphone 12 was made in 2020 so apple added the hardware to unlock with a mask. The problem is that apple was trying to perfect it which took a whole year

Older iPhones supposedly don't have the processing power to this. I believe them, because the chips in newer iPhones are quite a bit more powerful. So waiting maybe 5 seconds to unlock your phone wouldn't be something Apple would want.
That's why it doesn't work on older iPhone models probably.

it's weird that iphone 11 (A13) does not get this feature. A13 is still powerful, it is used in Ipad 2021 and Studio Display 2022. Please give Iphone 11 this feature!

Disappointed that it is on iPhone 12 and newer, they could have included iPhone 11 at the very most, will wait for the iPhone 14 or iPhone 15 before upgrading from my iPhone 11 Pro.

@@mp4455 I started using it in the first developer beta version, which is about half and a month ago and I stayed in that version until now.
It works quite well in terms of using Face ID with mask on but it seems to be a little bit battery draining.

Better with 256-bit iPhones (onward to iPhone 12 models, iPhone 12 Pro models, iPhone 13 models and iPhone 13 Pro models).
But not allowed for the 128-bit iPhones (such as iPhone XS, iPhone XR, iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro models) and iPhone X.
Seems like a scummy Apple way to get us to upgrade. The older phones can do Face ID, so what’s the problem?

Funny that you added this a few weeks after most places have dropped there face mask mandates. This would have been useful a year and a half ago.
With Deltacron around the corner this might come in handy. I’m still keeping my mask on when I go shopping anyway and I noticed a lot of people in Scotland are doing the same. So this update is just perfect for us.

I agree with you that an earlier release of this would have been handier but some people will keep wearing masks for health reasons (low immunity/asthma) so this is a useful feature.

It’s unlock with a mask on and a paire of Sunglasses. Where you says that it will not unlock with sunglasses. It is really secure?
I would recommend trying adding a new face to Face ID. But when you add your face again. Where a mask and see if that works. I read a long time back that people were hacking the system by doing this and it was working and this was a year ago

Apple... with all of respect, this feature is not made for leisure. It's a right of iPhone 11 users and older for Security & Health reasons. It is your social responsibility to make this available to us.
