Hi Katie! So with Table for One, people pick a movie they'd like to review with us, we watch it, then we all meet up in Riverside to record a review. Then we send them the review to keep. We don't post them here, but some people who have channels or blogs have posted them, as our friend Brent Leuthold did: th-cam.com/video/Ng-0WLD-NEI/w-d-xo.htmlsi=Vs5X3vhD4dMZrNSF. If you're interested, please email us at bfastalldaypod@gmail.com :)

The biggest surprise of 2024 is Immaculate. It looked like just another religious horror movie that wouldn't be worth the time, but, to my absolute delight, it was thrilling and left me giddy over the final third. This movie is willing to go to places that are genuinely transgressive. The word-of-mouth marketing makes me love it all the more. I did not care for Anyone But You, but Immaculate has made me a Sydney Sweeney fan (I even had a good time at Madame Web!)

I really struggled to enjoy Challengers, and I SO wanted to love it. I LOVED Call Me By Your Name, and I expected to love Challengers. But it just felt empty and devoid of substance, to me. I didn't have any issue with the content, and Zendaya was great in it. The film-making was great from a technical standpoint. But I just did not enjoy the film. I think part of it for me was that I did not feel the sexuality was authentic. It felt so staged, especially the tiny amount of gay/homoerotic teases. It felt like pinkwashing to me, and that irritated me. I think Zendaya is incredibly charismatic, but I also did not believe her as a mature woman with a child. It seems like she was portraying a woman who was early middle aged during the "now" scenes, but she still read to me as being around 22. I love her as an actor, and I hope she gets a vehicle worthy of her immense acting talent and charisma. (A film vehicle - I know she was the lead in Euphoria.)
I probably need to see Challengers again, as I feel like I'm missing why people love it. I wanted to love it, but it just did not work for me.

The best movie of the year so far is Civil War. Surprised Christy didn't have it on her list, she seems to have really liked it.

Tuesday, Ghostlight, Kinds of Kindness, Love Lies Bleeding for faves so far. Most forgettable and overrated so far: Civil War. Blah.

I feel like I'm living in an alternate universe where everyone on the planet got to see the most astounding version of Dune 2 (and 1 for that matter) and I saw my own version that maybe my solemn nun grandmother put together. I knew this theory of mine to be real when Christy used the word "striking". I'm baffled. I did not see the same Dune movies as everyone else. The ones I saw were boring, bland, lifeless, JOYLESS, the costumes were straight out of Sci-Fi Tropes 101, the sets and art-direction were dull bland lifeless boring blobbish right out of Sci-Tropes 101, the performances were zombie-like, Chalamet is not going to be a skinny angsty dark-haired boy all his life and his acting style of staring with an angsty look on his face won't work forever. I love much of Denis' work but it's like he took the most WILD WEIRD OUT OF THIS WORLD ASTOUNDING series of books and said "These need to be bland cookie-cutter movies". The documentary Jodorosky's Dune is the version I want to see, and unfortunately never will.
    Nice lists, guys!

I'm really (nay, EXCEPTIONALLY) disappointed in both of you for outright ignoring Kevin Costner's Horizon which feels like the very last gasp of old-school 20th-century filmmaking. Despite the overall mixed reception, I was enthralled from the very first frame and could feel every drop of sweat and tears emanating from the screen, going faster than a 19th century locomotive. Costner doesn't show an ounce of ego, but allows his story to unfold novellistically and gives his ensemble equal moments to shine; even his own son is good in what minimal screentime he has. My 2024 favorites also include Civil War, The Fall Guy, Furiosa and MaXXXine. Looking forward to Longlegs next weekend! (WATCH HORIZON DAMMIT!!!)

3 movies. 3 and a half hours each. Ego less? NOPE.
