It was wayyyyy too convoluted and wayyyyy too long! The leads were nice and the two “ghosts” were also enjoyable! I just got extremely bored near the end tbh
For me it’s definitely Dune Part 2. Saw it for the first time while being on vacation in Iceland in the only cinema of the second largest city of the country on the day it was released. Only got half of it since a lot was in a fictional language and the subtitles were in Icelandic. But i still managed to get a lot of it due to the impeccable directing. Then i watched it 6 times at home, 4 of these in the nearest IMAX cinema (which is 3,5h away xD) Such a great movie and overall experience, especially on the largest cinema screen on earth :D
They literally have it second in the list calm down and watch more movies. I wonder how dramatic your reaction would be if they said they hated the movie if this is what you do for it being second on a top five list.
Several from your list I am extremely hyped for. Here’s mine: 1. Hundreds of Beavers 2. Love Lies Bleeding 3. Challengers 4. Layla 5. The Beast 6. Ghostlight 7. Dune: Part 2 8. Civil War 9. Didi 10. Late Night with the Devil 11. In the Summers 12. Sasquatch Sunset 13. Sometimes I Think About Dying 14. Handling the Undead 15. Thelma
Challengers is also my favorite of the year so far. Have you watched Hundreds of Beavers? It’s a great 2024 release (at least it was digitally released this year).
I usually hate quick cut editing but the way that you do it strategically in the midst of nice long analysis is so fuckin funny, great list!! 2024 feels like a really quality year for cinemum. Idk if you counted The Beast in this year or or last year but that movie blew me away when I finally saw the other day
I always admire a best of list with movies I am unfamiliar with. Of course, being a cinefile I already anticipate Andrea Arnold's Bird and The Substance, but thanks so much for shouting out Christmas Eve, which I had not heard of and discovered it's directed by Tyler Teorama who blew me away with his awesome debut Ham on Rye. Altman indeed!!!
At this point in the year, the best movies I've seen are usually prestige movies from the previous year, that got released later in my country. In this case: Killers of the Flower Moon, Anatomy of a Fall and Past Lives. Though I really should've seen Dune: Part Two and Challengers by now, those seem great! Here in The Netherlands, Dune 2 has now started to leave theatres, but luckily a cinema in the Hague is doing a Dune special in July: Dune 2 in digital and in 70mm, a double bill of the two movies, the version by Lynch, Jodorowksy's Dune. So I'll be catching Dune 2 next week, I'm really looking forward to it! I rewatched the first one in preparation and I liked it way more this time around (first time I watched it, some of the story details flew over my head)
That Monkey Man poster is fuckin sick! I liked Monkey Man. It is a shame it didn’t get more attention aside from some tweets I saw but it was an interesting amalgamation of mythology and the modern action movie. Not perfect, but certainly unique.
Only have a top 8 in alphabetical order so far. Challengers, Dune pt 2, Furiosa, Hundreds of Beavers, I Saw the TV Glow, Love Lies Bleeding, Sometimes I Think About Dying and Snack Shack
Maybe Femme doesn't count because it was released in the UK in 2023 but I didn't see it until March 2024 and it's my favorite of the year, or maybe second behind challengers. But I can't stop thinking about Femme
Bird, Challengers, Christmas Eve in Miller’s Point, Dune Part Two, Furiosa, I Saw The TV Glow, Kind of Kindness, Monkey Man, Spermworld, The Substance.. not bad 👌🏼
my best movie of the year is Bertand Bonello's THE BEAST which barely anyone seems to have seen or be talking about, it got a poor theatrical release run. karsten, idk if you look at these comments, but i know that ur a massive David Lynch fan and you would love this movie! i hope more people are able to check it out
My Faves so Far Inside Out 2 Challengers Dune Part 2 I Saw the TV Glow Spermworld y2k It's Whats Inside Lisa Frankenstein Furiosa Problemista Civil War

It’s in my top 4 favorite movies
Is it considered a 2024 film?
Yeah it was only in festivals prior to this year. Pretty rare 2 year gap between premier and release wide release.
He reviewed it on his what I watched this month he gave it a 9 I think
7:40 Could you make that a video? "Top most exciting directors to keep an eye on right now"?
Cooper Raiff
Challengers is also my favorite of the year so far. Have you watched Hundreds of Beavers? It’s a great 2024 release (at least it was digitally released this year).

I laugh every time karsten calls a movie “sexy” lol it’s like an Easter egg
why do you say its an easter egg?
