Restoration Of A Ruined Legend - Honda VFR 400 NC30 - Part 3

- This time on RRC Restoration I'm still playing catch up from the previous delays from the last episode but any content is better than none am I right? So in the episode I will be sorting out the suspension issues. The rear shock has lost all of its nitrogen pressure and is technically non- rebuildable so it will have to be sent out for a professional refurb as getting the parts is impossible for a normal member of the public but that didn't stop me tearing it apart to see what condition it was in and to let you guys get a glimpse inside of a 33 year old rear shock. I then started work on the front forks and as you've seen me do many times before its basically strip, clean, paint, replace some bushings and seals then re-assemble. Anyway enough rambling on an on from me I'll let you enjoy the video.
Enjoy.

Just dropped everything i was doing to come watch this
I know right, 721 views in 10 minutes…👍
I hope it didn't land on your big toe.

Hope it wasn't the baby ...
Not only your restoration are simply amazing, but also the video quality is, I wonder how many time in percent you spend chosing angles, moving cameras and lights, doing multiple shots (like the washer on the floor), but I can imagine that with the time spent in a single "video restoration" you can perform at least 2 or 3 ones without cameras. My respect for your work!
Man, you are reading my mind on the video! It's like he is reading my mind about what I want to see. Almost like peeking over his shoulder.
Thank you so much for leaving that comment, yeah it does take ALOT of time and effort and it makes the restorations so much longer and believe it or not harder to do as most of the time you need to work in awkward positions so that the camera can see clearly, But having folks like yourself commenting on how much you like it it makes it all worth while so thank you so much :)
you deserve each of this comments here. Keep doing this amazing restorations 👍🏻
I don't comment about...almost anything, but yeah I have think about it too! So, thank you for the hard work!
@@RRCRestoration I was thinking that same thing. Also how you keep your shop and tools so organized is amazing. I love how you keep your face out of the shots... It's very clever.
It's been 20+ years since I made a living as a suspension tech, but 2 things come to mind. The first you probably did but just didn't show, when refitting the top cap, you want to run the rebound in 3 or 3.5 turns. This sets the range of adjustment (if they're all the way out when you put the cap on you'll have no rebound adjustment, or at different points from each other and you'll have different settings on both forks).
Second is conditioning the chrome tubes themselves, while not all Need this every time, it's bug guts and rock dings that tear up seals so we always dressed the chrome with a cross-hatch with some Emory cloth. I really don't remember grit, though the hatching was clearly visible... obviously, give a little more attention to any rock ding areas to knock down and smooth over the high points. The scratches won't harm anything, they simply fill with a Tiny amount of oil and give a slightly lower stiction.
Very good and valuable advice, cheers fort taking the time to pass on your knowledge to us :)
What about how the forks went together before putting in the dampner rod and the aluminuim bottoming out piece under it
@RRCRestoration
Hiya.
Is it possible to send the forks from a Honda blackbird to get a refurb ?
Loved the fallout reference. I think with the repaint the carbon fender would look good.
Thank you, glad you liked it :) Alot of people are saying paint the carbon to look like the OEM part so i might go down that route.
The best mechanic/restorer of youtube!
You're too kind :)
The homie waited so long that when he opened the door, his clothes changed. Your wrok is terrific. Thank you so much for the splendid content
Ahh what a Friday afternoon 😍 RRC and coffee
Enjoy :)
You have every tool at your disposal, and paint booth wow . But your knowledge of motorcycles is incredible. I love seeing ugly parts become beautiful again.
I’ve been a subscriber for years, but just now I noticed how great these restoration videos are! Excellent work 😊
Mad Props and Respect for your Attention to Detail and your dedication to rebuilding a motorcycle to factory specifications !!!
Lololol 😅 - a special camera shot to pick up a dropped washer!!! I love it ❤
Most people would have just bought a Nitron replacement shock. Love your fully committed restoration attitude ❤
Funny that you should mention that as I did look into just replacing it with a Nitron but I couldn't bring myself to replace the original.
What I admire most about this video is the great handling of the tools!
And the editing!
Thank you very much! :)
Instead of the proper tool, one can also use a PVC plumbing pipe plus the old rubber ring to hammer in the new rubber ring. Thank you so much for the detailed video and the whole series!
My inner child is exhilarated by the Fallout reference! Love the video!
Really glad you liked it :)
As an former owner of an NC30 these videos bring me tears of nostalgia...
That's no anticlimax dude. Not when it means there's more to watch. Just hanging around out here, bubbling with anticipation for any next episode 👉👉👉. Watching you work your magic on any part of this project is a total treat 👍👍👍. 😎
Oh for the space, time and knowledge. I will continue like almost everyone else to live vicariously in this marvellous little world you have created for us.
One of the very few content creators that I don't double tap to skip 10 seconds while watching.
Great content and channel. The 600, 916 and now this….so jelly on the collection your building. Cheers!
Always a pleasure! Your a man after my own heart, ive owned CR 250'S, NC 30'S, TL TRIALS BIKES, ATC'S, UK 2000, HONDA PLASTICS, DUCATI916 + many many more machines, best channel on here😉👌
I'm not a prolific commenter on TH-cam, I've done many a restoration on bikes (never to your standards) and about to embark on another (1988 zx400g import) and I would just like to say in the last 2 videos I've picked up a few hints and tricks and want to show some appreciation.
Thankyou for showing your progress and I will definitely keep watching.
Thank you so much for leaving that comment and good luck with your latest restoration : )
New videos from 46works and RRC in the same week? Huzzah!
Enjoy :)
This episode was 'worth watching'. All of your content is.
Absolutely brilliant filming and your work is first class.
So you sooo much for yr fine efforts .
Ive never come across such well made restoration videos ❤
Now you are really on point. The Fallout wait timer...........amazing. I'm a super fan of both You and Fallout!!!
Thank you so much. I'm a massive fallout fan too , I'm just so sad to have to wait so long till we get Fallout 5
I was scrolling for this comment, laughed at that. Consider Starfield! Only have 2 hours into it now but it has a lot of the same mechanics as Fallout has and it looks pretty cool. Plus: Spaceships!
Saturday morning brew, sun shining in the garden, RRC video, doesn’t get any better!
Most satisfying part was the blue blast. Good job!
A shocks video is exactly what i needed. You're even more help than my haynes manual! Thanks again for the videos
Cheers Buddy, you're far too kind! also I'm really glad that I could help you out :)
awesome work, happy to see the project isn't causing too much trouble for you, keep it up!
You’ve made me realise that I need to clear out my garage and create a work space for my resto, otherwise I’ll just be stop starting and getting no where fast!
The parodies get me every time! I never can guess what one you’ll do next. Lol
I wasn't expecting the fallout reference, got a good chuckle from me. Great work as always
Thank you glad you liked it, I wasn't sure if I should put it in or not I'm glad I did now :)
your restorations are top notch and your comedy is to, Waiting for the paint to dry cracked me up.
Very relaxing after a blast from Darien Calima back to Medellin! I can tell you my forks are fine!
so glad you fixed that sprocket - it gave me so much anxiety!
Already looking forward to the next video. I've just increased my Membership contribution on Patreon as the £4.50 it costs to support your work is very good value for money. Keep up the great content, John.😊👍
Sorry to be that guy but I sure you've installed the springs upside-down, I'm sure the tighter coils go at the bottom which was how they came apart anyway.
Secondly you've bleed the dampers then layed the forks down, and with the bottom end slightly higher they may require bleeding again. Great job though I've been doing this for 25 years and still love watching how other people do things, you can always pick up something new tips wise 👍
Nicely spotted, I wondering how long it would take for someone to spot that. Immediately after that shot I flipped the spring around , I got a bit caught up in worrying about the camera shot rather than what way the spring was facing. lol
Love your videos wish there was more. Keep The front mud guard if it cleans up nice. Can't wait for the engine build
Every time I watch one of your videos it reminds me to not be lazy when rebuilding or fixing things, take the time to do it right and it will last you! Anyways, the quality of video, skills, knowledge, and overall work that you do never fails to impress me, and also motivate me to get cracking on my own projects! Thank you so much
All of your videos are so satisfying. Two things stand out. The fact that you use proper torque specs wherever it's applicable and how clean and organized your shop is. Thank you.
You did a fantastic job restoring the front shocks. Can’t wait for the next episode.
Thank you so much :)
As a past owner of 3 separate NC30s, including a complete strip and rebuild, I'm so happy to see one of these great machines coming back to pristine condition. Not sure how previous owners have allowed this one to degrade so far...... Thanks for all your work and detail, actually tempted to get another and start again!
Great vídeo as always. That old RPG waiting screen was really good!! 🤣🤣
This is by far the best restoration show on TH-cam. I really enjoy watching it. Thanks 🙂.
you're too kind :)
The Fallaout 3 reference was amazing....
Several years back. I did a rebuild on my Triumph Speed Triple's suspension. After multiple rounds, due to seals leaking and poor performance, I found that factory suspension just wasn't for me. Ended up installing Mupo cartridges and rear shock for my setup. I probably took those forks apart 4 or 5 times in my garage, and this video just reminded mean that I still have that order of operations imprinted in my brain.
I'm a decently experienced home mechanic, but I have been dreading doing forks on my bikes because of how little good information is out there on them. This video will be a lifesaver for reference. Please don't stop putting out these fantastic videos!
Depending on your bike model, they can be easier or harder then these especially Japanese bikes they change their suspension types fairly often chasing better performance
Awesome work man. Big thanks!!
Thank you for watching :)
Mate you never have apologise about anything you do regarding your videos, I know the amount of time and effort you put in is only a part of what we, your viewers see, just keep up your awesome work!!
Brilliant as allways. Nice to see someone who doesn’t beep the torqe wrench 10 times per bolt.👌🏻👌🏻
Thank you, the workmanship is very nice, I am watching with pleasure, we are waiting for the cbr 954 rr style motorcycle :)
It's a good day when there is a new rrc video
Your attention to detail speaks for its self and your use of your tools my late farther tought me look after your tools & they will look after you so true great restoration glass raised cheers jon
You Sir, have equalled the exemplary skill and editing of M539 Restorations. Your videos are outstanding and your restorations are phenomenal. I haven't been this invested in a video for years, I am so looking forward to the next episode. Thank you for this amazing series.
Your attention to detail, organization, humor, and editing are so good.
Work and editing always on top! Always a pleasure to watch!
Thank you so much :)
Great work! Cheered me up after a s**t week at work. Bin the carbon fender, go original!
Superb work ! I’d love to do something like this myself, but only have an old hammer and a pair of pliers.
Top quality work as usual, I was surprised how clean the fork oil was. Going by the rest of the bike I expected much worse.
I was totally shocked too but i guess that they got a rebuild when the anodizing was done and then didn't cover many miles afterwards.
I love your work. They wouldn't allow the 400 over here in the States so I'm on my 4th 750 (various generations, even one 800vtec) my current one is a '93. It's the first one I've had to due a major rebuild on, as I let friend borrow it one day and he proceeded to ride it into the side of a mountain in Colorado. This episode will certainly help me rebuild the used replacement forks and front wheel I bought offa ebay. Excellent!
I do indeed have the genuine Honda shop manual for my model because they specs will obviously not be the same. But watching you do it proper is a bonus.
Almost done watching all of your content as I only found your channel not to long ago. Superb video's and workmanship! Planning on becoming a patrion soon to binge watch the content on there. I'm hooked 😅
Carbon front fender nice. Just re-lacquer it. Top work 👏 👌
Just enjoy everything, this Chanel is the best. Thank you so much for all content 🙏🏻
No worries, and thank you so much for watching and enjoying my content :)
OMG.. this channel.. I love it SO much !!
Artwork.. craftsmanship.. love.. passion.. it's all here..
Please carry on !
Also.. mad cheers from Wisconsin !!
Really enjoying this rebuild, Thankyou 👍👍👍
Glad to hear it! :)
These resto vids are like crack - hanging for the next one. Also, great touch to expose the innards of the shock to let us see the process. Thank you so much!
I enjoy all the episodes. This fork rebuild will help someone out a lot in the future. I know I've rewatched videos like it when I first started rebuilding my own.
Amazing job my friend congratulations 👏👏👏👏👏
Could binge watch these videos for hours. Thank you for sharing your ocd with us. 👌🏻
20:19 - no overalls, fire the continuity boss! That's GOT Coffee cup stuff right there 🙂 Another great vid - thanks.
Haha love it, I don't like to think of it as a continuity error more of a magic door where anything can happen each time you pass through it haha. Thanks for watching always nice to hear from you.
I just love the skills demonstrated here😊
Thank you so much :)
Some of the best videos on TH-cam..
I have rebuilt two motorcycles in my life. A Honda CB 350, and a Honda single 250. So, I know how much work it takes. This man is a professional. Expeditionary above even by best efforts.
Thank you so much for that kind comment. Both very nice bikes you restored too ;)
Another superb video! I wish I had 1/10 of you knowledge and ability! I'd then be more willing to have a go at servicing and working on my bike! Unless you fancy a short holiday in North Yorkshire! 😂
There's no need to apologise for the time between videos - life gets in the way sometimes, as well as supplier issues, etc. When you're ready to upload, we'll be ready for watching!
Take it easy and stay safe!
original Honda mud guard-----great craftsmanship
I am from Saudi Arabia and I like your videos. I want you to renew the car in the future.😊
hi , be careful the fork spring is wound backwards , the part of the spring tightened is down , good day ✌
Having recently done my CBR500RR front forks I envy how well the fork seal came out! I had to heat the casing up to get mine to shift. Great tip woth the plastic bags too.
I recently had a 125 in for service, same thing the rubber had basically welded its self in fork tube pretty much had to melt the rubber before it would move, absolutely nuts how hard they can grip.
What does the plastic bag do?
Really enjoyed this latest episode although one thing made me wince- using the ball end of the allen T key to crack the yoke bolts!
Superb in every way! Honda mudguard definitely. Would be rude not too. 👏👏👏👏👍
That Fallout reference was GOLD! 😂 Well done, RRC.
Thank you, so glad you enjoyed it :)
I love the boiler suit for spraying, very 70s racing driver.
YES!!!! Another RRC Restoration video! Been waiting (impatiently) for the next one. Your actual work, as well as the channel, camera work and editing are all enviable.
Thank you so much :)
Cant believe you apologised for that video!! Great work again. Most people think that suspensions are full of magic, so to watch it being fullly stripped down and rebuilt helps to give others confidence to tackle theirs. I love these bikes and always wanted one, its great to see this one being saved. Cant wait for the next video. Oh and I think if going full resto then its got to be a Honda mudguard!
amazing editing.. especially that fallout part!!
So entertaining to watch and see this repair done properly! I agree, the carbon fiber fender was nice, but I think an original honda one would be better if available. Can't wait for the engine rebuild!
Cheers buddy, really happy to hear you enjoyed the video :)
Go OEM all the way my friend! Totally not an anti-climax, I love how you are prepared to tackle some pretty complex mchines like this & the Ducatis.
Always such a pleasure to watch a new video from you. Greatings from France.
Awesome, thank you! :)
Loved the shout out to Fallout. Great video.
Thank you, Glad you enjoyed it :)
Love your work just the way you do things I've learnt somethings today. Interesting with plastic over the slider to fit the seal fitting the seal with the tool protecting the nut checking oil level. Thanks 👍
Thank you so much , really glad you've picked up a few tips and tricks ;)
You have no idea how relaxing and satisfying your restoration videos are. I am addicted to the pace and suberb editing
This is the perfect start to the weekend. If i was half as talented as you, id be a happy man.
Thank you, Hope you enjoyed it :)
Cracking video again.
Glad you enjoyed it :)
Absolutely fantastic 👍👍
Great work. Great video & editing with lots of quick cuts. Great sense of humour.
And, for what it's worth, I love the accent too (I'm a Brit, but my daughter did live in Dumfries for a few years).
Thank you so much really glad you enjoyed it :)
Your video production skills are on a par with your mechanical skills. Absolutely first class! An excellent video, as always. Looking forwards to the next installment. A vote here for original Honda for the mudguard!
Stunning work again 👍
Wonderful to watch as always! Made my time on the treadmill much more enjoyable 👍🏻👏🏻🤘🏻
É muito prazeroso ver o seu trabalho, um abraço do Brasil 🇧🇷
