    Are you kidding me?!?!?!???!!! It takes me about 20 minutes to fall asleep,how could I lay on my bed for 40 minutes just to sleep half the time?!?

      you could sleep immediately by 1. Being extremely tired or sleep deprived 2. sleeping at the exact same time every single day for a month.

      That doesn’t work very well. Circadian rhythm can only help so much. Also it doesn’t work when you have insomnia (about 6% have insomnia). Most people don’t fall asleep immediately even when they consistently go to sleep at the same time anyways (takes between 10-20 minutes). There are obviously outliers that can fall asleep extremely fast but it’s not very common.

      You're lucky I sometimes take hours to fall a sleep, and it's inconsistent as shit, sometimes one hour sometimes four.

      Its not as fun as it sounds. I fall right into rem sleep (a part of narcolepsy) and it makes for dramatically less satisfying sleep.

    I've done some experimenting with this. Being unmarried, childless, and self-employed, I have the freedom and flexibility to do this. Two of my main findings are this. #1. It is very difficult to maintain a normal social schedule over time. Regular sleeping and working seem arbitrary except that most people keep these hours, so if you operate on a different schedule it complicates social life. It's like if you demand that you can go to your 24 hour community center and play basketball at anytime of the day. While that may be true, there are more optimal times than others if you are trying to play 5 on 5. #2. The days all start to run together. It gets difficult to recognize one day from the next. Essentially you are turning your whole life into one big day. If you are working like a madman on projects, then temporarily it's sustainable but long-term I think it will affect your frame of reference for memory in a bad way. The short answer is you start to feel like a mad scientist, keeping odd hours, working all the time and taking break for sleeping. It's interesting but a normal person that has to plan their life involving other peoples schedules will have a hard time maintaining those relationships or the sleep schedule.

      I'm no scientist, but this is my best guess: if the vaccum of space was instantly replaced with a breathable atmosphere at 1atm, the stars would burn brighter as they absorb the matter and become more massive. Solar wind will ionize the surrounding atmosphere (causing it to glow?).
      Space might also turn light blue, like Earth's atmosphere in the day. The stars would emit a powerful burst of sound energy. Planets such as our own would erupt into flames as they smack into the new matter with astounding speed. Eventually, the new atmosphere with be collected by the already existing heavenly bodies. Some of that air will collapse into new stars. Can a physicist correct/assist me here?

    I have a massive delayed sleep phase disorder, so I rely on naps since I never get enough sleep during the work week. My body wants to go to sleep at 4am and wake at 11am. Work starts at 9 for me, so this is a big problem on work nights as I usually only get 3-4 hours of sleep. I typically take a nap around 7pm for an hour or two and that helps quite a bit, but I still will be only max out at maybe 5-6 hours a day, which doesn't seem like enough. Really I would be better suited to work 2nd shift, but that just isn't realistic in the 9-5 business world.

    I work 16 hours (2pm-6am) from Monday through Saturday. I take naps on my 3 breaks in between shift and sleep 2-3hours when I get home. I still have 3-4 hours to run some errands and other things.
    I think it also runs in our family too. We really don't get the full 8 hours of recommended sleep. I just thought we're a family that just love naps.

      I can do with 4 hours of sleep, but only for 2 straight days. And on the 3rd I tend to sleep for more than 12 hours to compensate and fully rest my body. If left alone to sleep and wake up as I wish. I tend to sleep for about 9-11 hours.... (hmmm...).
      But at the same time when I go for even longer periods of non sleeping or if I don't rechargw fully for a while. A nap at the end of the day can turn into a 17 hour sleep with me craving more sleep if not for the fact that my mom and my stomach continues to pester me to eat.

    I am curious how a polyphasic sleep rhythm would change my daily routine. But I do not know how to make this work with my job. I honestly doubt that only naps would be a healthy way of living. Deep sleep stages are extremely important for brain function.

      I started doing it a short time ago.
      4 hours a night, 20 minutes during my 30 minute break and 20 minutes once I get home.
      Works great!

    At last, a LN video where he actually answers the question!
    For the past fifteen years I have survived on an average of 2-3 hours sleep - in one go - as and when my body can't take it anymore. (Usually around 4-5am.) On the whole, I think (I hope) I am no worse off than normal sleepers and personally believe that my mental faculties are usually better than the average. (That being said, that could also be my 'norm'.)
    Physically, however, it's definitely the case that I cannot bear too much physical effort, though I could if pushed, but maybe that's also my normal state, what do I know.
    Ultimately, I started doing this as the thought of reaching 60 and having been unconscious for 20 whole years scared me silly. That's earning, learning, wining, dining and entertaining... LIVING time being stolen right there. Not on my watch!

    I actually unintentionally keep up an everyman sleep cycle for a pretty good time across my last summer and from an anecdotal perspective, I don’t think I was very heavily impacted, but I will say that sleeping during the day feels notably less restful then sleeping at night, its just kinda how our body is when you try to do something like this.

    Going to try a little experiment:
    Abstract: Smashing a cup of coffee and having a 90 min nap. While asleep caffeine will replace dormant adenosines and when i wake up, the caffeine will kick in.
    Hypothesis: Will definitely not go into a coma

    I am only running off of twoish hours of sleep right now, when I went to school I would frequently cut my sleep to three to four hours so I had freetime. My health was always fine, except when the seasons changed my lungs acted up. Never had too many problems.

    Yes, I take one two hour nap before I have to get up for school. I got to school and then pass out for about 6-7hours. Stay up for most of the night and have the nap again. It's a bad cycle but it's the only way I can do school without being sleep depraved.

    I have a polyphasic sleep pattern, but not one as severe as the ones mentioned in this video. I sleep for about three hours (starting at about 3:00 A.M.), wake up and go to school, sleep for about an hour in a free class period at 9:00 A.M., wake up and finish school, and then go home for a one hour nap at 3:00 P.M.
    The only health downside that I can think of is slight dark circles around my eyes, but they’re worth the extra three hours of productivity and I can’t seem to sleep any other way.

    As a soldier and I regularly end up on a schedule where I sleep for 2 hours every 12 hours and as crazy as that sounds it works. Granted I am exhausted by the time I fall asleep again but I am able to operate and function just fine.

      I can't do a 20 min or even a 1h nap. I need atleast 2 hours and even then I tend to not sleep for that amount. Needing 3 to feel refreshed. And tbh anything above 4 is basically a short sleep.

    lol i remember for a few months i lived on naps alone... but eventually i had to stop bc those naps were in class and sometimes you just dont Finnish your work early enough for that 1pm nap and then it messes everything up bc you get so tired that you sleep for too long and then youre no longer in the nap cycle you once were in

      SuperAtheist Not always. No two minds are alike, and quite a few notable brilliant people had strange sleep patterns like this. Nichola Tesla, for example, only slept for two hours every night, Winston Churchill never slept in any sort of traditional sense and instead would just take a small nap whenever he got tired, and Leonardo Di Vinci essentially did what Tesla did, but took regular day naps (usually three one hour long ones).

    Here's the thing, it takes about 15 minutes for you to go to sleep on average. If it takes an average of 90 minutes for a REM cycle and an average of 20 minutes for a power nap: add 15 minutes and that's how much time the person actually spends in bed.
    As a college student, I usually only get 3-6 hours a night. When I'm exhausted, I take a REM nap: 1 REM cycle. It's great and it works for me. I regain energy and stay alert until I can fit in a larger REM cycle. I always feel better with a solid 5-6 REM cycles a night and no naps, but that's a luxury.

    My goal when napping is not quantity/time oriented. Rather, naps tend to improve the quality of the time I am awake. So with that in mind, what if instead of napping to cut down on total sleep time, you instead go with a cycle of, say, 2 hours awake/2 hours asleep ad infinitum?

    Didn't really answer the "what happens" in detail, this channel is getting boring and doesn't stay true to its thumbnail anymore.

      Really? Yes it is. Just because one video doesn't say it's Thumbnail in detail doesn't mean the whole channel "doesn't stay true to its thumbnail." He is teaching people like me in an interesting way. Maybe you didn't see the detail thoroughly, since you seem to think it isn't "true to its thumbnail." (If you don't get what I'm saying, I'm calling you an idiot.)

    I find sleep needs to be highly dependent on wake activities. Doing construction, I have been fine with four hours. Watches on boats are pretty similar. Software development needs much more, like ten hours or for a while I slept nine at home, worked, went to the gym, ate, took a two hour nap in the office, worked some more. That made me really productive. But we are all different. My dad worked within a short walk from home and he came home for lunch, after eating he took a nap, had no trouble falling asleep right away for a fifteen minute nap. I am still impressed.

    I've always been a napper. I rarely sleep through an entire evening. I typically sleep for increments of 2 to 4 hours at a time, with a 2 hour nap in the late afternoon. I've always been this way.
