    The notepad at 2:58 says:
    "TO DO:
    Film Cipher wheel video
    Talk to doctor about corn
    Pick up dry cleaning
    Take cats for walk
    Buy corn
    Will the nightmares ever end?"
    I couldn't understand the rest.

    *Michael* the way you were using the wheel, Walsingham would totally have your head. What you need to do is rotate the four wheels with each character (which direction and by how many ticks is part of the key). Still won't slow down the NSA, but will probably keep amateur cryptanalysts confounded.

    Since the cipher wheel is based on numerals you can further make the encrypted message harder to decipher. You can add rules to add, subtract, or perform any other mathematical steps in order to produce the accurate letter. For example, if you have it set so that for say the letter M, the outer most and second outer most rings are set to 2 and 7 respectively, and the unknown rule is to subtract the latter by the former, you would then write down 5 instead.
    Even further, since each encrypted letter is made up of two symbols instead of one, you can write each letter vertically, but the entire word is written horizontally as normal. Like this for example, using the corn example:
    5913
    7925
    Ciphers are fun.

    • @thebeastisback2697
      @thebeastisback2697 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Nope Naw isnt that the same cipher the germans used in WW2 named the Lorenz cipher (or Tunny as the british named it) just with a slight diffrences.

    • @rabeebibrat1805
      @rabeebibrat1805 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, add Caesar Box and what not? ❤️ And about mathematical operations, it's somewhat more complicated. More generally, you are asking for transforming the four numbers (a,b,c,d) to another n numbers, but note that the transformation has to be invertible. E.g, (a+b, a-b) is a good place to start exploring. Other complicated linear combinations, like (a+b, 2a-3b+c, c-d, a+d) are still invertible. That's common sense from linear Algebra, however, for non-linear transformations, more complicated explorations may be required.
      Note: Without such transformation, the message, if a large one, e.g., a few sentences will be pretty easy to decipher, even without the wheel.

      @domiller14 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      One way around that is to repeat the last letter of each word using another corresponding character in the cypher line to signify a space/period/end. For example, use the inner-most character as a space, period, or end.

    • @KrzysiuNet
      @KrzysiuNet 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Dook, it makes deciphering even easier. If you would make analysis and guess at least a one boundary (which would be easier as well, as "another number" means that if there's XX, it can't be one), you know that in word (with space on the end) 123456, 5 must be 6. Last letter of the word will be of course just a subset of alphabet, so probably you'd get word like 7686 and it means that 8=5=6. Then if there's 1454, then 4=5=8=6 and the game is over - you have already relative to themselves orientation of rings and you are left with 33 combinations. In fact even with a single guess like that you already have sure position of two rings relative to each other which possibly would be game over for cipher as well.

I used to donate to the United Way until I found out how little of the total money donated made it to the intended purpose. Do guys make a video, or reply to me here. One of the other works. Break it down to cost over donation if you want or feel you need to justify a small percentage. If you had of started with help support the channel by buying a box or four I'd be doing that right now (I already went and looked at the cost for a Canadian) instead of requesting this. But seeing as I am going to send money to a foreign country for research to an illness that is close to me ( father) I'd like to know. I don't care where the breakthrough happens as long as it happens. Hardest thing to see is a man, my father, suffer from two things I wish no one should ever have happen. • @Anna13Tonks

      I am interested, can you elaborate? Just a little?

    • @Verrisin
      @Verrisin 6 ปีที่แล้ว +41

      +Anna Ok! First a warning: I'm not an expert, just a programmer.
      some definitions:
      cipher: an algorithm everybody can know and is needed to encrypt and decrypt the message
      secret: something only sender and recipient knows
      key: the bits (data) used to encrypt/decrypt messages using the cipher. It should ether be secret, or based on the secret.
      I will be talking about symmetric ciphers here - i.e. you encrypt and decrypt with the same key.
      Now, what he presents is essentially caesar cipher, with 4 opions for each shifted letter. (That cipher is very weak to frequency analysis and can even be easily bruteforced. Even I could break it, and Inq's cipher is only slightly better.)
      Obfuscation means, that there is no special secret, and instead the whole cipher must be secret.
      Without explaining them much, here are some basic prnciples:
      - secret should be practically impossible to guess - (has similar properties to a password) Should be long enough that attacker cannot try all possible values (or it would take millions and millions of years) - trying all possible values for secret is called bruteforce attack, and if it's the only possible attack and will take too long to be practical, the cipher is considred secure.
      - cipher should be public - if your cipher is good, the secret is enough to be secret, and others can help you find in your cipher (that's how real cryptography works, see OpenSSL) - another reason is that best secret should be as random as possible, and the cipher obviously cannot be random. - also, it's very specific and not just few bits, so it's hard to keep it secret: if it's designed to be public already, leaking the cipher will not hurt you in any way (even if you choose to keep it proprietary or something)
      - his cipher includes the element of a person 'choosing' which shift (wheel) to use, that is never a good thing, as people will not choose randomly and thus, benefits of having 4 wheels will be even smaller. Essentially, it's possible to predict which options you will choose if I know how you encrypted messages in the past. This does not matter in this cipher, as it can be brute forced easily each time, but it's a bad principle to teach.
      - he talked about 'but how do we share the secret?' - this is where he embedded the secret into the encrypted message, hence there was no secret and it became just obfuscation.
      - sharing a key in reality is done through asymmetric cryptography, that lets you secretly share short messages without sharing any secret prior to that, only a form of trust. It's more complicated, so I'm not going to go into that, but in practice: you share the secret (completely random each time) by encrypting it in this way, and then your communication uses that random secret (and from it derived key) to encrypt / decrypt the data.
      - it's generally a bad idea to use the same key multiple times - (not for all ciphers, but again, good thing from educational point of view) - the way to solve that is in simplified terms: make part of the key random, and share it with the encrypted message. That way, an attacker cannot use any guesses from the previous message on the next one...
      - some not-so-important details: the only time he used randomness in this video was to choose the message to encrypt - you need randomness in cryptography but never for the actual message - he should have used something like dice to select the wheel if anything...
      - his intended usage of the cipher wheel doubles the length of the message - that's pretty inefficient
      - his idea of using each digit of time to set one wheel is also quite sad: the original key space is 26 options for each wheel, time is only 3 options for first wheel (if you use 24h format) 10 for second, 6 for third and 10 for last. That'a a big reduction... - again, doesn't matter, since the key is embedded in the encrypted message, so it's just obfuscated, but not a good principle to teach.
      - even if we imagined we don't have computers, and all must be done by humans, to train our minds, and we don't care about it being secure against an attacker with a computer, this still does not offer pretty much any good principles for cryptography.
      - There is a lot more, but if you are interested, there is a lot of information online and need to get some work done. XD
      - Though, to give him some credit, the mirrored numbers are pretty cool: easy to read, write, yet not obvious. Nice simple way to obfuscate digits.
      - Dammit, now I want to design a cipher for kids based on a bit better principles (although, obviously still far from perfect: there many things that doing without a computer would just be horrible XD) ..... but I don't have time for that. XD oh well
      Have a nice day ^^ (and I hope someone actually read this XD (and I'm not too wrong anywhere in it...))

      I'm dying to know what sort of things Anna does. And what she looks like.

      Martin Verrisin I agree it is a toy, but designed I think for someone to get intrigued by cryptography without the layman getting overwhelmed by it, rather than making an intricate cipher

    Michael is one of the few people I would love to meet one day. Such a lovely and funny guy. Makes me smile every time he talks so enthusiastically about his toys.

    "This is box number 8 by the way"
    In the description you say it's box number "VII" (7) - is this another way to encrypt the wheel?!
