I will never do this in my life. I know very little about engines or wiring. You are a good teacher. You made me understand what you are doing. Thank you.
You're going to rub through your hydro oil return line on your new tray. You'll need to put a piece of sacrificial hose over the return line where it hits the tray.
I had some large trees taken down and logs cut to ten feet or so. Sat in yard for a year and a half. I was going to get a splitter etc. A guy came by and wanted to buy them. I said they are yours! I didn’t want money I’d a paid him to haul them away. He came with a splitter like that elec start etc. He cut them up and split them right there, hauled it away and left two face cords stacked on porch !!👍
You're pretty handy with making your log splitter more useful. You need to make an automatic return and they're simple to do. Extend your control handle on the bottom the same length as the top. Then you need to attach a rod to your RAM. As the ram goes out the rod will contact the bottom portion of the handle pulling it in the opposite direction. I think this might be a worthwhile video you doing that. John
Taryl, I would add a flip out extension to your catch table to extent it's capacity. Then flip it closed into the stationary table for vertical use. A pin will keep it secure when not in use. Make it narrow enough to drop into the existing table and shorter so the pivot will use the end of the existing table as a stop and the new extension will be on an incline. Great video as usual.
Howdy cousin Taryl! Thanks for the shoutout and I'm so glad you like the centerpunch. Looks like you have yourself one fine dog splitter there. I'm sure the upgrades make it even nicer to use. Take care and keep up the great work.
@@NA-pg4lf Howdy NA!! Thanks for the comment. I was up to see Cousin Taryl last year and we made a short video he put on facebook. If I recall correctly, Elkskins was driving a go kart around the parking lot. I wasn't able to make the trip this year but hopefully I can next year. I have some more ideas for a video and a few tricks up my sleeve to share with all the Taryl fans but that's only if he will let me back in the shop. He did throw me out but I'm glad he didn't throw me over the fence - LOL. It's all good fun! Take care.
My MTD log splitter came with side trays, which is a really desirable feature. I bought one of the Harbor Freight clamp on caster wheels and put it on years ago. My biggest gripe is pulling the cord and starting it in freezing weather when the hydraulic oil gets thick. An electric start feature sure would be nice.
Thanks Taryl. Did similar Mods to My 35 Ton. Took the parts from a blown up 15Hp and they all fit My 12.5 Hp. Used the AC windings for Lights on a Cross bar on the end of the Splitter Beam. I split 100% vertical so that puts the lights overhead. My battery Box has the Electrics built in to it and it is not mounted on the Splitter since I use that set up between Machines. just set it into a holder and plug it in. Same with the Gas can, Just a holder for a Red 6 Gal Can and boat connectors, I replaced the Jack with a 12" Dolly wheel, removed the hitch and put on a vertically pivoting Draw bar with a handle on the end, put the hitch on that. Not I can roll it around or drop the hitch on the ATV or the back of the wood trailer. I have all the Parts to make it Self Propelled, just the intuitive to put it together..LOL I tried the foot plate extension, but ended up bending it up since I am in the woods a lot and the area is not so flat around the Base, I just use some old 2x4/2x6 just setting there. For Elm I have a piece of Horse matt on the foot plate so the Wedge cuts all the way through. An oil cooler is in the works too... Mike M.
Good job on the electric start. I used 1/4" cold rolled plate sized 18 x 18 for the foot. It adds a nice amount of counter weight and is super strong for splitting HUGE rounds vertically. Your side rack is ok but it needs a hand rail around it about 3 inches tall to keep wood from rolling off.. keep at it dude. Time teaches all.
B&S is pretty awesome in that they have basically the same engine block for the different options. makes it super easy to add on options later if you want. I've noticed Tecumseh is usually the same way with having tapped blind holes on the block to add on a starter or a torque converter. I'd like to see a starter kit added on to a block that doesn't have the holes drilled or tapped though, that would be pretty interesting (especially figuring out the gas can if you don't have a nicely molded one like yours)
Yep, unlike Honda who go out of their way to redesign the same engine where you can't add electric start so they force customers to pay them more for the option. It was B&S who fixed Honda's decades of oil dilution mistakes too...
I replaced the tongue with 3x3 rube and added a short vertical peice to support the horizontal position. I had a plate bent for a log tray. As for the motor I gave into a 8hp predator. It really runs nice. You got me on the electric start!. That machine has been splitting wood for 35 years. Bought it a tractor supply for about 675.00.
I put a led flood light pod on the top of the boom. I use mine more in the vertical position due to cutting bigger trees (free is free). I also tend to split later in the evening because it's cooler down here.
Dam as a horror movie fan i was drawn into this scary short fast. Ypur filming techniques are actually better then most movies ive seen . You definitely need to do more story lines. And hell maybe make a few horror shorts . Super cool
Nice upgrades! This "old man' still splitting by hand, not sure for how much longer 😟 I have a friend even older than me ( 80s ) that still splits his own wood, with a log splitter. Due to recent shoulder operation he has a real difficult time with the pull start. I have to check & see if we can mount a starter. It has a Honda engine. The cradle & the foot extension are also now on my todo list. Stay safe, Joe Z
Great video as always! Like others have said, use that spare wire for lighting. It'll be getting darker earlier soon & the extra lights will make make operating the splitter safer & more enjoyable.
Great video. I see one small problem. When the splitter is horizontal, the hydraulic return hose looks pinched or at least makes contact with the new rack you installed. Other than that, great improvements!
Tarryl you need two more additions to the log splitter. A wedge that splits a log 4 ways with one pull of the ram. The other add on is a t-handle with a 2inch ball to move the splitter around.
There's always room for yet more improvements. Up to the point where this thing goes out, saws the logs and splits them all on its own 🙂 One more addition could be fast advance and retraction of the ram.
VERY nice work on the hog splitter Taryl! Love the improvements! You did a great job putting that all together - really cool! At first I thought the extension on the steel plate was questionable - but once I realized it would be sitting on the ground and saw it in action - it turned out better than I thought it would have. Good stuff T!
As a grass rat. Got a suggestion. Use a piece of a small tire as a cover over the relay to keep rain and wood chips off of it. A little rubber umbrella. Great upgrades on the log splitter.
I don't know much about log splitters, to me that log splitter is a beast, but I've generally seen the smaller types. Excellent show, like the intros to. 👏🏻✌🏻
I like the catch plate on the side. I Will need to put it on a slight angle. I have bigger pieces, usually, and they tend to roll a bit. Nice spyderco knife. Will the battery over charge?
That is one cool job on that log splitter. I got a electric start engine I am going to be putting on my splitter as soon. As I get time.. see you'all later.
Hey guys Big fan here. Im working on a older 8hp breaks and scrap'em(its on a gokart). Now I've put a alternator off a 17hp intek and im getting dc voltage out of it. My question is im going to wire it up to the battery but i noticed my connector doesn't have a diode. Can you give me a link to one of your videos that might help me understand and wire my project right.
I did something similar to years ago, welding a wheel to a trailer jack. The foot of the jack was made of really crappy soft steel, very little strength. It worked but it would flex, I was always nervous around it. Much bigger trailer tho.
Maybe you could source some more of that pipe and some flat stock an weld the flat stock to the upper part of the tongue that comes away from the trailer to box it in and then weld pieces of pipe over to the stiffener pilot to hold it all together. Great video!
Wow a lot of great technical details. I always learn something new when I watch your videos. I take notes so I can use them when doing similar projects.
A starter solenoid with a built-in push button will also work. I ordered one from Advance Auto a couple years ago, but i forgot what the part number was.
Great video! I just love seeing improvements being done various machines and etc. Its fun to watch. Well done again Taryl and friends and I hope to see more.
The splitter wedge could also be modified with two 90° angle wedges welded on the head so that you won't have to resplit the same piece of wood so many times.
I've seen that type of improvement. The wedge looks like a 4 points star. I guess they made into a regular wedge so, you don't stress the machine too much.
@@rverro8478 They build them cheap as they can so they can sell them for greater profit. Bigger pumps, motors, and cylinders means they cost more. Also why the plate the log stand on with this one is so tiny, the tongue tube is made out of tubing that looks like it's gonna bend under just moving the machine, and it just has a tube instead of a real trailer jack. Frankly I'm willing to bet this one didn't have a 8hp briggs on it new. My money is it only had a 6.5hp china engine just judging by the build of the rest.
More Carla! Another great job by Slippers also. All splitters should come with those log catchers.

you are supposed to split all your wood in early spring,. not the dead of winter there numb nuts, so it dries and will burn clean.
Run thinner fluid or trans fluid
