I will never do this in my life. I know very little about engines or wiring. You are a good teacher. You made me understand what you are doing. Thank you.
I had some large trees taken down and logs cut to ten feet or so. Sat in yard for a year and a half. I was going to get a splitter etc. A guy came by and wanted to buy them. I said they are yours! I didn’t want money I’d a paid him to haul them away. He came with a splitter like that elec start etc. He cut them up and split them right there, hauled it away and left two face cords stacked on porch !!👍
Taryl, I would add a flip out extension to your catch table to extent it's capacity. Then flip it closed into the stationary table for vertical use. A pin will keep it secure when not in use. Make it narrow enough to drop into the existing table and shorter so the pivot will use the end of the existing table as a stop and the new extension will be on an incline. Great video as usual.
Howdy cousin Taryl! Thanks for the shoutout and I'm so glad you like the centerpunch. Looks like you have yourself one fine dog splitter there. I'm sure the upgrades make it even nicer to use. Take care and keep up the great work.
@@NA-pg4lf Howdy NA!! Thanks for the comment. I was up to see Cousin Taryl last year and we made a short video he put on facebook. You're pretty handy with making your log splitter more useful. You need to make an automatic return and they're simple to do. Extend your control handle on the bottom the same length as the top. Then you need to attach a rod to your RAM. As the ram goes out the rod will contact the bottom portion of the handle pulling it in the opposite direction. I think this might be a worthwhile video you doing that. John
You're going to rub through your hydro oil return line on your new tray. You'll need to put a piece of sacrificial hose over the return line where it hits the tray.
Thanks Taryl. Did similar Mods to My 35 Ton. Took the parts from a blown up 15Hp and they all fit My 12.5 Hp. Used the AC windings for Lights on a Cross bar on the end of the Splitter Beam. I split 100% vertical so that puts the lights overhead. My battery Box has the Electrics built in to it and it is not mounted on the Splitter since I use that set up between Machines. just set it into a holder and plug it in. Same with the Gas can, Just a holder for a Red 6 Gal Can and boat connectors, I replaced the Jack with a 12" Dolly wheel, removed the hitch and put on a vertically pivoting Draw bar with a handle on the end, put the hitch on that. I have all the Parts to make it Self Propelled, just the intuitive to put it together..LOL I tried the foot plate extension, but ended up bending it up since I am in the woods a lot and the area is not so flat around the Base, I just use some old 2x4/2x6 just setting there. My MTD log splitter came with side trays, which is a really desirable feature. I bought one of the Harbor Freight clamp on caster wheels and put it on years ago. My biggest gripe is pulling the cord and starting it in freezing weather when the hydraulic oil gets thick. An electric start feature sure would be nice.
VERY nice work on the hog splitter Taryl! Love the improvements! You did a great job putting that all together - really cool! At first I thought the extension on the steel plate was questionable - but once I realized it would be sitting on the ground and saw it in action - it turned out better than I thought it would have. Good stuff T!
I replaced the tongue with 3x3 rube and added a short vertical peice to support the horizontal position. I had a plate bent for a log tray. As for the motor I gave into a 8hp predator. It really runs nice. You got me on the electric start!. That machine has been splitting wood for 35 years. Bought it a tractor supply for about 675.00.
B&S is pretty awesome in that they have basically the same engine block for the different options. makes it super easy to add on options later if you want. I've noticed Tecumseh is usually the same way with having tapped blind holes on the block to add on a starter or a torque converter. Good job on the electric start. I used 1/4" cold rolled plate sized 18 x 18 for the foot. It adds a nice amount of counter weight and is super strong for splitting HUGE rounds vertically. Your side rack is ok but it needs a hand rail around it about 3 inches tall to keep wood from rolling off.. keep at it dude. Time teaches all.

I put a led flood light pod on the top of the boom. I use mine more in the vertical position due to cutting bigger trees (free is free). I also tend to split later in the evening because it's cooler down here.
That is one cool job on that log splitter. I got a electric start engine I am going to be putting on my splitter as soon. As I get time.. see you'all later.

@@rverro8478 They build them cheap as they can so they can sell them for greater profit. Bigger pumps, motors, and cylinders means they cost more. With a spitting wedge twice as tall. And an end stop, also twice as tall. Taryl could split chunks of wood twice, while still stacked together. That's double the output of split material of the short stature single height splitting wedge. (We had a home-made splitter made with a Hydraulic Ram from a Dump-Truck with a !2" high wedge.).
I did something similar to years ago, welding a wheel to a trailer jack. The foot of the jack was made of really crappy soft steel, very little strength. It worked but it would flex, I was always nervous around it. Much bigger trailer tho.
could you have made a folding shelf? it folds over itself so you can have a longer shelf, it doesnt have to be as long as the bottom peice but would give more room maybe? is it hard to learn to weld? noticed it was a breaks and scrapem, lol, if you read this post can you recommend a good book on this motor stuff the ones we have small engine repair series is so old (tho the principles seem to the same) I would like updated information, also I am a beginner tho I have watched all of yoru videos, my hubby likes your videos, I have never repaired anything in my life but I am starting to understand the parts what they do and how they go together etc, my hubby has these series on small engine repairs before we even met and were married so the pictures in there are of mowers no one uses anymore. would be nice to get updated info, and pictures of updated mowers (I am particularly fond of my stand on mower which has a briggs andstraton vanguard. we have craftsman where the undated coil and electrical is different an we have no idea how to make it work since the new part has only one plug (prong) but the one they sent us is the right coil has two plugs, frustrating they would not do the refund or send us the other part and take this one back tho i has always been inthe box unused. it is so old anyway but this stand on mower is a gift from my hubby too.
I did that with my old Coleman 5k with a 10 horse Briggs I/C. No bosses for the coils so I got the ring gear kit and put it on the generator motor flywheel with the starter. Then wired up the switch and solenoid and battery with a 110 volt maintainer to keep the battery charged and when the power was off, just plugged the maintainer in to the generator. So far, so good. Always a way to improve and thet 10 horse is a double handful to start with the recoil.
@@GuysPlayingWithTools I've seen them and they are sweet but I needed something stronger because of knots and such so I tried Ebay and folks saying they wanted to sell theirs but there was nothing and nobody really wanted to sell theirs so I broke down and got a saw and a splitter NEW. The splitter was a Champion 37 ton but really more like 35 with a 5 inch cylinder. I got a marine screw jack like teryl's but with a big steel wheel. Put an emergency stop by the valve and turned the filter right side up to get all the air out of it. It has yet to kill itself and we're all very cautious but there's no such thing as a knot it won't split. I get logs and cut them to length and split for us and him. So far all is well. A starter solenoid with a built-in push button will also work. I ordered one from Advance Auto a couple years ago, but i forgot what the part number was.
Those pieces of steel are most likely going to get bent. It works when it is on a flat surface, but when you are on uneven ground, the log will transfer the force from the ram to the frame which will not have the stiffness to keep from bending.
More Carla! Another great job by Slippers also. All splitters should come with those log catchers.

could you have made a folding shelf? it folds over itself so you can have a longer shelf, it doesnt have to be as long as the bottom peice but would give more room maybe? is it hard to learn to weld? noticed it was a breaks and scrapem, lol, if you read this post can you recommend a good book on this motor stuff the ones we have small engine repair series is so old (tho the principles seem to the same) I would like updated information, also I am a beginner tho I have watched all of yoru videos, my hubby likes your videos, I have never repaired anything in my life but I am starting to understand the parts what they do and how they go together etc, my hubby has these series on small engine repairs before we even met and were married so the pictures in there are of mowers no one uses anymore. would be nice to get updated info, and pictures of updated mowers (I am particularly fond of my stand on mower which has a briggs andstraton vanguard. we have craftsman where the undated coil and electrical is different an we have no idea how to make it work since the new part has only one plug (prong) but the one they sent us is the right coil has two plugs, frustrating they would not do the refund or send us the other part and take this one back tho i has always been inthe box unused. it is so old anyway but this stand on mower is a gift from my hubby too.
Nice upgrade, you took a good log splitter and turned it into a "gooder" log splitter. I was surprised at the strength of the angle iron🙂
@@lewiemcneely9143 very nice! I live in Texas so a little 5 ton electric does a season of wood in an hour
Yes, that's scary but it was a good move. The saw was a Stihl 261 which is a commercial saw. My son-in-law scarfed it right up but I have a 440 Magnum here. I'm in the hills of NC myself. A worn out hillbilly! LOVE Texas and Texans though. BLESSINGS!
@@lewiemcneely9143 All Texas says thanks ! 🙂
My little 5 ton splitter will take on up to about 15 or so inch wood without a problem. Tried a 21' log once.... once 🤣
There are plenty of dead 12' to 15' Elm trees with 25 miles of me and when I offer to remove a dead tree for free people always jump at the chance.
@@GuysPlayingWithTools Texans and hillbillies are a LOT alike, the natives that is. A bunch I've been around I'd swear they were from next door to me. Salt of the earth! I've got 3 logs that will average a good 24 inches through, one bigger and one a little smaller. Makes a lot of stove stokers but they sure are heavy and I sure am creaky but we've got half a 10x12 woodshed full so we're as ready as we'll ever be! And the son-in-laws nickname at his job is 'The Ox' so I might snag him if need be,.
Slip some box section up under the tow/draw bar, slip up underneath tight fit and stitch it in, would that be okay to stop the flex?
Hey guys Big fan here. Im working on a older 8hp breaks and scrap'em(its on a gokart). Now I've put a alternator off a 17hp intek and im getting dc voltage out of it. My question is im going to wire it up to the battery but i noticed my connector doesn't have a diode. Can you give me a link to one of your videos that might help me understand and wire my project right.
Hi Taryl, Watching You Lift That Splitter ARM-- Maybe You Should Add A Small Hydraulic Lift Arm on It. I Personally Don't Use It In The Vertical Position Much ,But I Know The Splitter Ram Is Heavy To Lift By Hand. Great Job Once Again By The Small Engine Whiz.. " And There's Your Dinner "
TARYL I WAS HAVING A TERRIBLE TIME WITH MY LOG SPLITTER JURKING THE ROPE OUT OF MY HAND. TOOK A LOT OF TRIAL AND ERROR TO REALIZE I HAD PUT TO SMALL A MOTOR ON IT.
LOG SPLITTERS HAVE GOT TO HAVE A HEAVY-DUTY FLY WHEEL.
CAST IRON NOT ALUMINUM .I WANTED TO DO THE SAME THINGS TO MINE LIKE YOU HAVE DONE. GREAT VIDEO LIKE ALWAYS. REALLY ENJOY YOUR VIDEOS. THANKS.
A starter solenoid with a built-in push button will also work. I ordered one from Advance Auto a couple years ago, but i forgot what the part number was.
Thats a working bad to the bone beast, it splits the big stuff like cutting thru butter
Those pieces of steel are most likely going to get bent. It works when it is on a flat surface, but when you are on uneven ground, the log will transfer the force from the ram to the frame which will not have the stiffness to keep from bending.
