The Basenji is a primitive or pariah dog that evolved in Africa as a hunting dog. His coat is short and thin, and he has prick ears, a wrinkled forehead, and a tail that folds over his back. His habits have been compared to those of a cat, and he is certainly curious, bright, and self-reliant. Although the Basenji has many positive characteristics, he is not the breed for everyone. If you're thinking about getting a Basenji, here's what you should know.
If you value your stuff and don't have a sense of humor, a Basenji might not be the right dog for you. It's not uncommon for Basenji owners to tell one another about the havoc their dogs have wreaked. The Basenji is a playful, energetic dog with his own ideas. If you want to stay one step ahead of him, you'll have to be smarter or at least sneakier than he is.
He's a great watchdog because he's always on the lookout. While the Basenji is known as the African Barkless Dog, he is far from silent. To communicate, he growls and yodels. On the Basenji Club of America's website, you can hear some of the sounds Basenjis produce. The Basenji is a fantastic choice for households with older children who can handle him properly with his fun-loving attitude.
A exhausted Basenji is generally regarded to be a good Basenji. Plan to provide him with lots of daily exercise, such as a lengthy leash walk or a chance to run in a safe, traffic-free area. Agility, lure coursing, obedience, rally, and tracking are among dog sports that give both physical and mental activity. He will invent his own (possibly damaging) entertainment if there isn't enough to keep him occupied.
Keep the Basenji restricted to a properly fenced yard. He enjoys hunting little furry animals like squirrels and will eagerly chase moles, mice, rats, and other vermin. You can't rely on an electronic fence buried underground to keep him contained. He's far too intent on having his way.
With firmness, patience, and consistency, train the intelligent yet rebellious Basenji. Keep training sessions brief and enjoyable, and don't be surprised if he adds his own twist to directions or outwits you in other ways. Use positive reinforcement strategies like praise, play, and food rewards for the best results.
Brushing once a week to remove dead hair is all that is required to maintain the Basenji's odorless coat. To avoid infections, trim the nails, brush the teeth, and keep the ears clean and dry.
The Basenji should be kept inside. If isolated to the backyard with little or no human company, he will demonstrate his dissatisfaction in a variety of damaging ways.
