    My rescue dog that is now 2 turned out to be a Basenji and we only recently discovered this breed despite having her since she was only several months old. I enjoy watching videos of different Basenji's and how they act. I definitely see similarities across the entire breed. Your dogs are so cute, and I hope that they are best of friends nowadays.

      oh, yes. they are the best of friends. 😍🥰❤️ dabi loves when prisca chases him for some toy, they run outside together, look out the front windows together, they nap near each other, and it’s a comfort to dabi to have his little sister with him when we have to leave them alone together for a little while. ❤️❤️❤️

      Aww. Boston Terriers are so cute, too. I just petted one the other day outside Sam’s Club and I told his owner that I wanted a Boston Terrier as a child. (I didn’t have dogs or cats as a child.)
      Sadly and tragically we just lost Dabi to prostate cancer 2 months ago. It hit out of the blue. We didn’t even have time to say goodbye, really. We’ve had a pack of 4 basenjis in the past that died of various old-age-related ailments. That was hard, too, but at least they had full lives. This thing with Dabi has hit us really hard. My husband can’t even bear to watch any of my old videos now.

      basenjis are probably a challenging type of dog to have as a first dog. that said: a basenji was my first dog, and you may very well be up to the challenge. ❤️ i would read as much as i could about them, if i were you. i had been warned of what to expect by the coworker who told me about the breed. my husband and i were in our 30s when we got our first basenji boy (and he had had dogs before). probably the best resource for you to check out would be b.r.a.t. - basenji rescue and transport. if you think you want one after reading everything that the rescue group has to say, i hope you get one. (a lot of basenjis end up in rescue because they are a difficult breed to own.) but to my husband and me, they are the best dogs in the world. we love them so much. ❤️
      we had 4 basenjis at once when our cat was younger. but now the kitty is an old woman and our 2 new basenjis would be too much for her to handle so we keep them separated (the kitty upstairs when the dogs are downstairs, outside when the dogs are inside, and inside when the dogs are outside, etc.) 🐈‍⬛ 🐕 🐕

    I have a basenji. I am thinking of getting another basenji so that my basenji has a playmate. Are you happy with your decision that you had two? If you had to do it all over again, would you have stayed with one? Do they compete (fight) for your love??

    • @BasenjisForTheMostPart
      @BasenjisForTheMostPart  หลายเดือนก่อน

      sorry for the late reply. sometimes i miss my messages…
      i think basenjis almost always need another basenji for a companion rather than the other choice (of being a single dog). they are happiest to have a companion, but sometimes personalities can clash.
      we had 4 originally. then we had another 2. we got them each one at a time, a year apart usually (almost… our 2nd & 3rd basenjis were 2 girl puppies that we added to our single male 1-year-old basenji’s life.
      dabi - prisca’s brother - died last february. we tried having her be a single dog for 3 months, but she was sad and miserable. and she was afraid if we left her in the house alone when it was dark. so we got her 1yo nephew to join our family, and we have 2 again.

      @@chriswalls5831 obviously, it’s best to get a basenji from a show breeder since they are the ones who work so hard at the betterment of the breed. ❤️ i think 2 problems that basenjis are known to have are hip dysplasia (?) and fanconi syndrome (?). i really couldn’t tell you much about either of those issues because, of the 6 total basenjis we have had, we haven’t dealt with that stuff. hopefully, we won’t have those things to worry about since dabi & prisca’s breeders get genetic testing done on the parents of their litters. ❤️
      our second basenji - sophie - had something called EPI (exocrine pancreatic insufficiency). it showed up right around her second birthday. she almost died of starvation before we figured out what was wrong with her. (her pancreas had stopped producing enzymes. a dog with EPI will eat voraciously, but can’t absorb nutrients from their food. german shepherds are affected more by EPI than basenjis are.) the pancreatic enzymes that we had to mix into every meal she ate, for the ten years she lived after my husband & youngest son discovered through google what was wrong with her (the vet was stumped), cost thousands of dollars. but it was worth it to us to keep her alive. ❤️❤️❤️ her breeder was more of a backyard-type breeder and i’m sure she didn’t do the extensive screening & testing that a good show breeder does. 😬 we got sophie in 2004 and learned why the experts say to get a purebred companion dog from a show breeder. 🤷🏻‍♀️
      the hardest thing was losing our first 4 to various cancers… 💔 neo died before his 11th birthday, sophie died a year later before her 11th birthday, and cece and little girl died 2 years later within 2 weeks of each other. they were 14 and 17-years-old, respectively. little girl had been a puppy mill breeder for the first 7 years of her life. so it’s kind of ironic that she was the healthiest and lived the longest.
      we adopted little girl from b.r.a.t. - basenji rescue & transport. her AKC name was ozzie’s red slipper. we didn’t like that name and were sure it was never used for her. she must have been caged or strictly confined the first half of her life. basenjis are so agile and can practically sail through the air, but little girl couldn’t even go up and down stairs. she was rescued, along with dozens of other basenjis, from a south dakota puppy mill that was shut down.
      we were fostering her for b.r.a.t. to begin with and called her little girl cause we thought some day her permanent owners would use that term of endearment. we ended up falling in love with her and became “failed fosters” when we adopted her a few months in. she was extremely nervous all her life (surely because of her rough early years), so that was a challenge in itself.
      i would say that basenjis are a more challenging breed of dog to own than most (from what we hear and from our experience). but we love this unique, intelligent, independent, often destructive, catlike breed so much.
      …so much so that after 2 years without any basenji “babies” we got dabi and then his half-sister prisca a year later. my hubby and i are getting older but we figure we have one more good round of basenji raising in us. 😅❤️❤️❤️

    Nice video. Until Dabi reached the age of 1, did you ever manage to leave him alone at home (crated or free-roaming)? Was it difficult to raise a basenji alone until the age of one?

    • @BasenjisForTheMostPart
      @BasenjisForTheMostPart  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      sorry for the delay in a response, mark 1… i have memory issues…
      anyways, we didn’t leave dabi at home alone before he was one. he would have been too upset if we both left at the same time. we got a girl in our neighborhood to babysit him when we both wanted to go out together. i had retired in december of 2019, right before covid made everybody start isolating themselves. and we got dabi in the spring of 2020, right before flights started to be cancelled. so he and i stayed at home together a lot during his puppy days.
      but once we got prisca we could see that dabi was a lot more content and relaxed, and he didn’t feel like he had to have us in sight constantly. actually, it kind of bothered me at first because i would be worried that dabi and prisca were getting into something if they were out of sight and too quiet… just like with kids. lol.
      we did start leaving them alone together, free-roaming, when prisca was about half a year old. they did fine. they would behave themselves. we reasoned that if they weren’t blocked off from any areas that they are used to traversing through during the course of the day, they would be less inclined to become nervous and/or destructive… and that seemed to be the case.
      sadly, more recently, prisca has managed to get up to no good… not when we’ve completely left our neighborhood… but once - when dave and i were both outside and we kept them locked in - prisca chewed an arm off a loveseat. (we had some heavy construction equipment in the yard at that moment. it’s the only reason we didn’t let them out with us. but prisca took offense to that, i guess.)
      and even more recently prisca tore the carpet up from where it meets the stairs while i was in the shower one day. my hubby fixed that spot, but she is drawn back to it. so now when we leave we can’t allow them to go upstairs and be anywhere near that carpet. and that’s too bad, because dabi liked to hang out upstairs on our bed while we were gone, when dave and i left together.
      it’s always a challenge with basenjis. ha ha.
      in the past we crated our first 2 females until they were about 2 or 3 years old while letting the male we had - who was a year older than them - roam free. when cece and sophie routinely behaved themselves, we put the crates away and never used them again.
      dabi had panic attacks in his crate. we tried to make him feel safe in one, but we just couldn’t do it. so when prisca came along we neglected to even try to crate train her. that was a mistake, because, if we had, we could let dabi roam and keep her crated while we’re out until she outgrows her extra destructive phase. live and learn. lol.

      i think the american kennel club has a whole list of dog breeders for various breeds of dogs. that would be your safest bet, getting one from someone on the list. show breeders breed for the betterment of the dogs… ❤️
      we got our first basenji from a hobby-type breeder. and the second and third, from a backyard breeder who didn’t run the proper tests. so our second basenji had something called EPI that cost thousands of dollars to take care of in her lifetime. (we didn’t mind doing it, we loved her so much, but it certainly wasn’t ideal.)
      our fourth basenji was a rescue that b.r.a.t. (basenji rescue & transport) rescued - along with a bunch of other basenjis - from a puppy mill in south dakota. she had been a puppy mill breeder for the first 7 years of her life, poor thing. she didn’t even know how to go up and down stairs when we got her. you can find b.r.a.t. on facebook and adopt a rescue from them.
      if you’re going to buy a purebred puppy, though, show breeders are the people a person should really buy their dog from. they cost more, but these breeders love their breeds and only do the best for them. ❤️
      we got dabi from chris maxka - a basenji show breeder for over 50 years. she lives near gettysburg, pennsylvania, and she calls her group sundiata basenjis. she has a facebook page called sundiata puppy posse. good luck finding your basenji love. 🥰

I spoken to professionals that only breed champions. . I have spoken to all the breeders we could find a puppy near-or far and around the country. I’ve had no luck except one lady in California She had thought that her dog was pregnant. After ultrasound she was very disappointed , because of the money that She spent and that. she wasn’t going to have new puppies. That was the last of our conversation I have not heard anything back after several emails. She was very professional until, she realized that the dog was not pregnant. I just hope she didn’t fall sick.If anyone can help me and my family to get a puppy tricolor. We will be very grateful.
