  • Before you buy the 24-105mm kit lens for the Canon EOS R5 or R6, you should consider the RF 35mm f1.8 Macro STM lens. I'm all for buying prime lenses especially if you're just beginning. Here I'll tell you why it's so versatile and totally worth the money.

      that was my thought process when i was thinking about buying r6. "cheap" and really useful for video and photography. but from using 18-35 for years now, i am not sure would i be ok with not having the kit lens. i noticed how much more i change my 18-35 to 85 on my walks with a friend that has 24-105. a lot :)
      also, youtube algorithm is only showing me Canadian photo/video channels in last few months :D

    On a journey to upgrade my crop sensor to the R6 I had been debating on getting the RF Lseries kit lens that is an optional package with the price, I need a travel lens so a matching crisp lens is important. I think for travel the 35mm is great, not only because it's so small, but especially if you want to take pictures of the people you're travelling with! Only thing, if you want to take pictures of thigns that are far away (I mean like... FAR away) the 35mm won't feel zoomed in enough.

    One more reason why I would choose this one over the 50mm. Although 50mm is perfect for single person portraits, I usually end up shooting more than one person (family, friends, etc...). In that situation a wider lense is better and you would never go that low in aperture so you can keep everyone in focus.

    I added the 35 after getting 24-105 L kit-lens with RP. Perfect match.
    ( Now only missing the "RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM" :)
    I would like to mention another two good things for the 35mm
    - One is the more accessible, and less expensive, filter size 52mm - which let me use my old stuff from AE-1 for example (been a while since early 80's)
    - Another cool thing is to use the 1.6x crop in my EOS RP when a little more reach is needed... converting to a 56mm 'prime', sort of.

    Hi Keegan. I do love the value and light weight from these primes...and the ability to use for macro is compelling. I'm also intrigued by the idea of this 35mm for video as well. BUT (it had to happen!) the 24-105mm is one of the better all purpose lenses I think Canon has made. It's also worth pointing out (especially for beginners) that shooting wide open at f1.8 is not easy.

    • @KeeganRobin
      @KeeganRobin  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're right about the all-purpose abilities and quality of the 24-105. Thanks for your comment! Absolutely, it's designed for that. I'm not necessarily arguing that the 35mm is MORE versatile, but it is nearly as versatile and more useful in other ways (such as low light, macro and video). But I would argue that shooting at f1.8 is actually easier, especially with Canon's AF system it's insanely easy to get focus.

      @@KeeganRobin - since my R5 is still in a factory somewhere waiting to get boxed and shipped I can't speak from hands on experience! I do know that I struggled with my EF50 prime for some time...especially wide open (or near to it). I end up taking 10 shots to get one. Of course this may speak to my lack of skill more than anything, but for me lenses like the 24-105 are more forgiving and easier to use for anyone on the entry level side of the spectrum. Nice video and amazing shots. Deff taking the advice to ditch the kit lense. So they make a similar lense you used in your video with weather sealing? Or is there a specific line of lenses that have weather sealing covered

    • @KeeganRobin
      @KeeganRobin  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good stuff! The 14mm that I use also doesn't have weather sealing. The only RF lens close to what I have is the RF 15-35L which is verrrrry expensive. It's weather sealed though and way better than my Samyang 14mm manual lens.

    Just got my R6 with the 24-105 f/4. It's not just nice, it's actually pretty amazing and the most versatile lens I have ever owned. The ability to go wide to mid-tele, especially for travel and landscapes, was paramount for me. Sharp and quick to focus and since I shot 99.9% stills, video is an afterthought. That being said I wanted to add at least one prime to my kit, and this is probably going to be it. I have 50 covered and the super-fast 50 and 85 are beyond my needs, or bank account. (BTW, when I zoom I know exactly what focal length I'm at)

    • @KeeganRobin
      @KeeganRobin  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good stuff Tom. I have the 24-105 also and use it once in a while now. I used to use it a lot more but since I bought the 35 and 50 primes, they're more often on me than the zoom these days. The primes have such a punchy look that beats the 24-105 for me every time. Plus their size are unbeatable for walking around.
      I do vouch for that 24-105 though for travelling. Absolutely. Nothing beats having the ability to zoom into an animal and immediately afterwards take a sharp, wide landscape at 24mm.

    I actually got this camera/lens w the Eos R combo for a steal with the intention of selling the 35mm to offset the cost. I used it for a couple days to check it out and I cannot let it go. If Canon wants to crush some competition...they need to make more primes like this WITH weather sealing. 50 1.4 weather sealed please!

    Yes. This is by far one of my favorite lenses of the past 2-years. I've purchsed the entire Sigma Art series in that time pretty much, several Canon L Series, including the 24-105 and the 400mm f2.8, and by far the best bang for the buck is this 35mm. It is sharp wide open, wide but not too wide, fast focusing, lightweight and VERY VERY affordable.

      I recently purchased the Canon EOS R.I use it with a Sigma 35 1.4 Art lens.
      Is the rf 35mm lens sharper the Sigma lens?

    • @justinmc9287
      @justinmc9287 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@maxpowers111 I have used the 50mm Art, the 85mm Art, and the 135mm Art on my EOS R. All three have their pros/cons. The 50mm for example is exceptionally sharp for portraits but only within a certain range (not everyone will have the same experience I am sure). As for the 35 Sigma vs the RF 35 I am not sure there would be a great enough sharpness difference to have me want to get the Art over the Canon. I love that the 35 Canon is native and has IS which works very well with my R6 especially with video. I love the form factor for the 35 RF Cannon as well. It is like half the size of the Art AND, again, it has IS to help with stabilization. Yeah you go from 1.4 Art to 1.8 Canon but you won't see a huge difference. I use my RF 28-70 f/2 almost exclusively now. I bring the 85 Art to my shoots but I rarely use it. The f/2 does a fantastic job especially when taking a step back and zooming in to 70mm which gives you great compression and background separation.

    I have an RP and a EF 24-70 f2.9 L II (a beast of a lens that cost me 750 almost brand new!!) and I shoot mainly boudoir (indoors)... Im constantly shooting at 35mm and 70mm, f2.8 1/60-1/400, ISO 100-800... and I loooove that "blurred background look"
    That's how I really learned that the 2 focals lenghts that I use is 35 and 70 (maybe better 85), and now I'm planning on getting this RF 35mm f1.8 and the Samyang AF 85mm f1.4 RF!

    While I have no doubt that the 35 is a great lens, this sort of advice is highly dependent on the kinds of photos you take. A lot of my photos on my old 7D were action shots where I was continually bumping up against the 105 of the old 24-105. And that was on an APS-C camera. Which means I'd really want a 70-200 or even a 100-400 on a full frame sensor.

    • @KeeganRobin
      @KeeganRobin  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Of course! Your style will really dictate which lenses you need. For people who want a lens for the reasons I talked about in this video, this 35mm is a great one. I'm not really talking to anyone who already knows exactly which lens they need.

    Just a small word about size/weight: the RF 35 lens (300g) on the R body (660g) still amount to almost a kilo on the wrist / in the pack. An EOS M50 ii (387g) with the FOV-equivalent EF-M 22 pancake lens (105g) amount to less than half that weight and can get images good enough for a lot of purposes. Not saying the IQ is comparable - just saying that for some applications, the APS-C format/quality might be sufficient and is a lot more portable.

    • @KeeganRobin
      @KeeganRobin  ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed. I bought a fuji x100v which is a 35mm equivalent lens and I choose it over the EOS R + 35mm now because of it's compactness and ease of use
