As a Combat Infantry Veteran: I never (as a grown man) thought Sgt. Slaughter was Actually a Veteran. It was obvious to me. I don't consider it stolen valor, as it's a GIMMICK, and as such is a tribute to us, the troops.
His gimmick, when I was a kid is part of what inspired my service.

No, Slaughter was not an actual Marine, other shockers: Ivan Koloff was not actually a Soviet Russian, he was Canadian, Chief Jay Strongbow wasn't a Native American, he was Italian, his former partner Billy White Wolf was Lebanese. Welcome to the world of Professional Wrestling. Slaughter lives his gimmick, but to my knowledge he never claimed it as Bob Remus, never said he earned the medals on his jacket, and never claimed VA benefits or anything similar in the real world. And as Sgt. Slaughter he's done more for the military than any recruiter or public affairs officer ever did (at least while being a good guy). So give the righteous indignation a rest.

Slaughter was actually the reason my step dad quit being a mark.
He had me and my brother watching every WWF show shown on HBO until he'd supposedly went out for a beer and saw Slaughter and Sheiky baby having a beer together during their boot camp match run.
Now, I do believe this because I remember to this day 35 plus years later that he was such a mark that the cops had to restrain him from jumping the barricade to get at the heels according to my mom. One day he's like this and then the next week, he would refuse to watch wrestling anymore.

I don't really care much about lies in the wrestling character context, but stolen valor is a real thing and I totally understand any servicemen feeling some type of way about it. Personally I don't care, it's a wrestling gimmick.

And you could clearly tell the interviewers were confused by his insistence on keeping kayfabe. It's not for me to judge his actions, I'll leave that to Don Shipley. Undertaker broke out about the time that was fading yet you hardly ever saw him in public as anything but as his character. While I can't help but agree with you in general, I also gotta cut Slaughter a bit of slack. He was an actor that, instead of playing a part in a movie, had to play it 24/7. i'd love to hang around the person who said that against sgt slaughter, everyday must be a wonder to him by telling him the simplest of things and it would blow his mind out
Hey did you know thanos was just CGI and wasn't real? Hey did you know harry potter flying in a broom is just green screen? hey did you know babe the pig actually can't talk
And everytime you say something like that, he'll freak out on the revelation

I don't care what Remus did professionally. As Sgt Slaughter he looked identical to the figure I had, and that was beyond fucking awesome! It helped me love wrestling for a decade and it gave the Iron Sheik a great nemesis. No tears.
