    Psa: if you have small hands and can't press ctrl, shift etc reliably, you should set up a macro on your mouse side buttons (you need 2 minimum one for shift and one for ctrl) that way you don't need to use your left hand at all to press shift and ctrl. And on the same note, i suggest only going up to 4 or your wrists are going to hurt trying to reach 5, sucks but it is what it is.

      @irxess 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      You can also move your movement keys one or two keys to the right of WASD. That way, there are a few more keys you can reach on the left side of your hand as well. Of course, that only works if you have your modifier keys on the mouse.
      I don't know how many extra keys you can reach with smaller hands, but I got at least my little finger resting on a key I can press all the time, and then I move my ring finger to reach other keys.

      I have small hands so the keys I generally set is 1-5, q for interrupts, r, v for taunts, f, x, e, and if I really need an extra button, T. Of course I also have shift and mouse bindings for additional button slots but that layout is generally pretty easy on my hands

    Nice video as always man. For keybinds I use the basic 1~5 / Q~T / A~G and Z~V when needed with SHIFT and CRTL as modifiers placed as macros on 2 of my mouse buttoms. I tried without success get used to a MMO mouse and after some trial and error found this solution that worked best for me.

      This is a great idea. I have a MMO Mouse and cant get used to it as my fingers seem to big for the keys. So i also bought a Razer Tartarus Game Pad. Its better for me than the mouse. Takes practice using it. Yet the idea to keybind a Shift and Alt to the mouse is a good idea as i can separate the keys well for that. Thanks for the tip.

    Great video, it helped me a lot. Even as a veteran gamer with 30+ years of experience under my belt I was overwelmed by the number of possible keybinds in FFXIV. It was like playing an old X3 game. Even worse to be honest... I really don't mind learning curves, but spending hours trying to figure out keybinds and layouts before you can actually start playing is such a drag. Your video made more sense of it all, so thanks!

    A very useful BLM macro:
    /micon "Aetherial Manipulation"
    /mlock
    /merror off
    /ac "Aetherial Manipulation"
    /ac "Between the Lines"
    Will use Manipulation if an ally is targeted, and Between the Lines otherwise, creating a single teleport button that will default to your Ley Lines unless a friendly target is specified. Between The Lines has such a short cooldown (3 seconds) that not being able to see it has never been an issue.
    I use because I play on controller and soft target it, but K+M players can use .

    I was literally just having this conversation! I do use a mouse with side buttons (SteelSeries moba mouse, 6 side buttons). I didn't care for the 12 button mice I've tried, so I use a bunch of keyboard binds too (Q, E, R, F, G, Z, X, C, and V are my go to's, from WoW). Small hands mean that I try to keep everything close by (and I rebound A and D to strife left/right).

    1:25 What changed my gaming experience a fair bit was swapping caps lock and escape in the registry on Windows. Made caps lock no longer a big "dead" key so close to WASD (I press escape so much, and not just in games, while barely using the actual caps lock function). And freed up an adjacent macro key I'd previously bound to escape for easy access.

    With a FPS type mouse, I make the hotbars to be 4x3 with the idea of three rows of four slots to three rows of four keys from 1-4; but since WASD are in the way, the modifications are: first row as intended, 1-4. second row is q+key left of 1+e-r, third row z-c+f as v is not comfortable for me. Then thumb buttons are Ctrl the one behind and shift the one in front, to keep the relative position from keyboard. That is enough for everything. Alt is for things I have that I like to activate with keys but aren't needing superfast reaction. For now that just means summon the mount and the ultimate. I have the ultimate in Alt to avoid a finger slipping into it when I meant to activate the slot beside it or the slot that's with another modifier.

    A Naga mouse is really helpful. It comes with 3 different options: numpad side, 7 button circle side, and 2 button side. I use the 7 button circle mouse. It frees up my left hand for the F keys and to move over to the right for my lesser used keys. I digress. My screen layout is entirely different than the majority because it helps me pay attention to other players instead of looking at the floor.

    I was one of those people asking for this video and after seeing it, I have more questions...
    I'm sure this video is super helpful to a lot of people watching, but to me it didn't answer a lot of questions. All the things outlined in this video are things I already do:
    * Have crucial cooldowns front and center in your UI
    * Modifiers on your mouse side buttons which let multiply the easy to hit keys next to WASD. 1,2,3,4,5,e,r,f times 4 (plain, ctrl, alt, shift) = 32
    * Have similar skills for similar jobs on the same place on your hotbars
    You use an MMO mouse with tons of side buttons, YES... that was useful.
    So how did map those side buttons?? Specifically, which ones did you reserve for modifiers, and which ones did you map directly to skills/spells... *and why*? What's comfortable to do you?

Investing into a great MMO mouse especially the Corsair Scimitar Pro will help a ton especially if you're newer to using keybinds in general. I also find it funny that we have the same exactly layout for Defensive CD keybinds lol.

    while I do have a gaming mouse, it only has 5 mouse buttons (mouse wheel [3], thumb up [4], thumb down [5]), which mainly control camera and focus targetting, ALL of my skills are accessible via the (regular) keyboard. I have an ESDF movement setup, standard movement, and all my skills are based on using AQWRTG and shift+AQWRTG. All hotbars are set 6x2, and accessible via 1-5 (combat hotbars) and shift+1-5 (emote/misc hotbars). My ESDF hand placement allows me to even reach 6, which I use as keybind to reach my pet/mount hotbar
    I'm hoping to make a video on how my setup works, because it allows a person like me with only basic, non-gamer equipment to play super-well cause everything's within reach of my left hand.
    (slightly editted to include pet hotbar)

    Just wanted to say, there has been a reason in the current savage tier to shirk someone other than the other tank. In E7S adds phase, the player with 2nd aggro will always get the stack marker. It's worthwhile to shirk a DPS other than the other tank or Samurai so that the Samurai can expend their tsubame and leave to spread DoTs on the adds without getting the stack marker.
    Alternatively, if one player (Most likely Summoner or Bard) gets shirked by both tanks, you can put both stack markers on one player, making stacking the full party in both easier, if you're playing a strat where the whole party stays together.

    Quick PSA on macros, but it's also better to include /micon at the END of the macro, rather than the beginning. The game still takes time to read that first line even if it's just the icon for the macro, so putting it at the end means your macro can activate that little bit faster.

      @@tencatogaming1927 A year late but it is true and very easy to test. Use 14 lines of /micon "Ability" /ac "Ability" vs 1 line of /micon "Ability" /ac "Ability". Time both and the one with a single line of /micon will activate the ability faster due to the delay that /micon adds. If /micon had no delay at all then they would fire at the same time but they don't which means /micon HAS a delay - however small it is.

    Just going to say in ANY game you should have similar abilities on the same button. In ESO when I play tank my 5 key is always my taunt regardless of its its the melee or ranged one, that way all I need to think is "Am I holding a staff or sword right now." Not that plus "What button is my taunt again?"
    I like to arrange my bards in the 3x4 to match the mouse keypad as well in this game, so if I for some reason don't know off the top of my head or muscle memory whats where all I have to do is look at my hot bar, and its laid out as four 3x4 grids so I know whats on what button and what modifier it is.

    You've got a very similar layout to mine. I try to keep all essential information near the center of my screen, and all non-essentials like quests, mount, emote bars, menus, etc to the sides. I think it's especially important for the party list to be always visible so you can track buffs and debuffs across the party, especially as healer so you can catch anything the tank might be doing out of the norm like a clutch SB or LD or any DPS that might have got clipped that needs spot healed.

    To extend on when Lynx says, "where you actually place them isn't the important part", of you're using a 12 button mouse and modifier keys the. It's not really important because all of your buttons are in easy reach. However, if you're using more keybinds on your keyboard then you should absolutely keep in mind where you place important and often used skulls so that they are comfortably within reach. Meaning don't place a skill with a short cooldown that you use often in an awkward to reach keybind. Like a healer putting a cure spell on a Shift+G keybind. You'd want that spell easier to reach (possibly without having a modifier as pressing keys with modifiers can lead to hand cramping and sometimes mistakes) So do put some thought into how you use spells and where to place them a spell or ability with a 2 minute or longer cooldown that you don't use often would be better for something out of the way like shift+g, and doesn't belong in a spot like keybind 4 where it is using a hotbar slot that could be put to much better use for you to play comfortably and react quickly.
    With a 12 button mouse it's not as big of a deal because all keys are within the reach of your thumb and modifiers are within reach of your other hand.
    Some players move WASD movement keys over to the right one space ESDF, to have access too more keys to keybind while still reaching modifiers like shift alt ctrl with the left hand.
    (I tried couldn't get used to it lol. But recognize the benefits)

    @lokithecat7225 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yup, MMO Mouse, and your left hand should be ASDW, ctrl, alt or shift (Modifiers which change which row you are activating with your buttons). Even if you find the MMO mouse awkward to use, most people can comfortably use at least 6 of those buttons, 3*6 is enough for most scenarios. And having some that you might want to click in odd scenarios doesn't hurt (like putting your "Start fight Macro" somewhere you click on as you don't need it in a fight).
    MMO Mice (Razer) often come with software that allow you build Macros that act as actual key presses, and work differently (better) than Macros built into FF. FF Macro's follow different rules than button presses, such as queuing up actions while the current one has some (less than .5 seconds) time still on it on key press, vs. FF Macros needing you to be clear of actions to work.
    Good advice on Macros, its good to note that you can add or subtract which Macros you will need to be using for the content you are playing. Salted Earth is usually set to dump onto ground at your feet, but that's just a personal preference.

    I use similar keybinds for different jobs based on the skill types, like you do
    examples:
    ALT+1,2,3 on healers are the oGCDS like lilys spells , for tanks Sentinel, rampart, reprise
    Q E F on melle default combos , healer hard cast damage and aoe heal
    X shift+x on tanks aeo default and aoe combo , on healers dot and cleanse , on magic dots
    shift+e,shift+f is always for my healers swiftcast+ revive or for tanks damage or defense buffs on short cds
    i have 23 keybinds that i've used across years of mmos (24+ if an mmo allows capslock binding), i hate having to click things so any thing needing clicking thats circumstantial and has long CDs is put on a hot bar below to the right eg thinair or tank immunity

    Thank you very much. Very useful! That info about Holmgang... well i am glad i didnt learn it from the cold floor :) How do you manage that "secondary" stuff like "Return" and maybe icons to change job? Do you use something to un/hide some hotbars, or do you solve it differently?

    • @mosley3485
      @mosley3485 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The solution is just not putting it on your hotbars. You can use /return and change job from the character menu. The hotbars are for actions that you need to use quickly in combat.

      These are very handy to have for gamepad users, too, to keep track of actions you have on another x-hotbar.
      I'd probably say they're integral for improving gamepad play, as it reduces the amount of toggling you do; it sucks to find an action isn't ready to use yet and you've wasted time and energy looking.

    Is there any way to make these mouse-over macros work during solo play? I don't like having my party list open if I'm solo and notice I can't really target myself. Is there a way to manually target yourself for the macros?

  • @paulc6636

    Is it possible to update one macro with another macro? I.E. Macro 2 is going to target a party member as well as cast a heal on them. Macro 1 will update Macro 2 with the party members name. I am not a coder, macro maker, etc so am not sure if this is possible.
    So the flow would be: I target a party member then press macro 1, this will then update macro 2 with the party members name that is part of the targeting command. Then when I click macro 2, the target command will target the party member and cast the heal command.
    Otherwise, I realize I can just edit the macro with the party members name. But if there is a special character or other potential issues in spelling, having a macro be able to update with the accurate spelling would be much much easier. lol :)

  • @TheFitDragon

    hey my big issue with the keybinds in this game is that the game forces me to keep my 1 2 3 4 5 on the same bar when I switch characters. Is there a way to change this? In World of warcraft when I switch characters I have different keybinds and that is something I would like in FF14 but am unsure if it is supported.

  • @Evnyofdeath
    @Evnyofdeath 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    You made a casual mention of controllers, but when you were talking about Astro you didn't mention how relatively easier it is for them. What I mean is if you play on controller you can cycle through the party list with up and down on the d pad, letting you quickly get to a person to use Play or Minor Arcana on. And the game remembers whichever hostile target you previously had for Malefic. Though if you need to retarget you can get left and right on the d pad to immediately swap to hostiles.

    Just want to say an ultrawide display for ffxiv is super nice. You have so much space for your ui and its a totally different experience especially in dungeons and raids
    also I never recommend using alt as a modifier unless its for super niche spells. This is to avoid alt + tabbing out of the game and killing your toon in the process

    • @lokithecat7225
      @lokithecat7225 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can disable Alt tab, and (thank god) windows key. That thing sitting in the middle of all the fun buttons is a death sentence.

    • @lewsee5562
      @lewsee5562 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, having an ultrawide is basically having a legit zoom hack. You see more of the arena if you use it compared to typical 16:9 displays.

    • @MrBigsmallguy
      @MrBigsmallguy 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Loki the Cat yea i can do that but the process is tedious and I usually alt tab in between ques. I wish there was a built in keyboard shortcut for that but I need to learn more about how to macro or script. Such a process and bind it to a key. For me its just simpler to not use it. I just end up putting other keys into my rotation such as Q,E,R,T,F,Z,X,C. Those in combination with Shift + Ctrl modifiers feel much more comfortable for me than using alt. Although I do get the appeal.

      There's soft targeting on the controller, so I'd be surprised if there wasn't a way with MKB

    • @reihwan
      @reihwan 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I mean it's not effective, but as a lazy healer I use < tt> and < t> in my damage macros. In that order. I can keep the tank targetted yet keeping doing damage to their target. Sure not effective if they don't target something or if you're doing harder content, but for daily dungeons it's something so I don't need to think too much after 8-12 hours of desk job.
      Soft targeting would be wonderful on MKB, but it'd need a way to cycle through party members and enemies (like D-pad up/down and left/right) separately I guess.

    good chunk of information. only think you should be a little clearer on how the macro is read. it processes the lines top to bottom trying out each line and jumping to the next one if it fails. someone in discord said the game can do 15-20 frames a second == 1 second and the macro read through all 15 lines. by repeating the command it will retry within these milliseconds. it won't always work because skill macros interfere with skill-chaining == only work when no skill is being processed

The only problem I have is that I still need to build muscle memory of which buttons are 7-12. Right now I sometimes have to spend a second brushing the buttons and counting to make sure I hit the right skill.
