I lost an arm in a motorcycle accident (not my fault - car pulled in front of me), so controlling everything with an MMO mouse (plus foot pedals for ASWD movement) has been quite a challenge. It was nice to hear you talk about some of the challenges one could encounter, and how you came to the same (or similar) solutions that I did.
I chuckled when you apologized for your english. I've never thought it was a problem. It sounds to me like you just need to practice more in regular conversation, so that way you feel comfortable thinking in english. You're being to hard on yourself :)
Started playing FF14 for the first time the other day, I'm a level 18 Gladiator and just got my Brand-New Ring a couple minutes ago :) Thanks for these videos.
You'll wanna keep that ring for a while; the only other accessory that'll give you more XP overall is from preordering Endwalker, and you'll wanna get a bit farther than 18 before doing that. :D
For those without an mmo mouse and modifier keys become more of a necessity but you hate stretching your hands that way, a nice thing is to bind your mouse4 and mouse5 to for example shift and ctrl. Having these modifiers on your mouse feels very comfortable. Also I like using Z (or Y on a German layout) for random out of combat things like mounting. I like it because these are actions I have up stop moving for anyway and I will never accidentally press them.
I'm a new player from GW2 (while waiting for the next expac) and I find your guides extremely useful. And don't worry about the English, you remind me of Cellofrag from the GW2 community. He wears his accent like a medal of honor and its super cool and your English is totally fine! So don't sweat it :)
From an ESL perspective, your pronounciation has really improved and it's pretty accurate. 👍 It's sentence structure and fluency that can use some improvement, but that's a common issue when you're used to another language. And even that is way better! Those things take lots of practice, so it'll come with time.
From a native speaker perspective it's the opposite 😅 his structure is fine he just second guesses himself so he gets tripped up q bit. His pronunciations are bit off but it's more the typical German to English stuff (English W is reeeeally hard for Germans for example). Either way he still sounds great.
Well, bookmarked because I have gone long enough just barely keeping it together with my current hotbar arrangements. Thanks for putting this out there man.
This is soooo very helpful. I switched from ps4 to pc about a year ago and I’m still trying to figure out the best way to set up my hotbars and this video has helped a lot!
Good guide. Couple of things I'd mention: - If you have a gaming keyboard, you can usually use the software that comes with it to reassign keys; in particular, you can change the Caps Lock key (which I never personally use) to ctrl or alt and have your 2nd modifier key in a much more convenient location above the shift key. Good way to get more hotkeys without having to make awkward hand gestures - As an alternative to WASD, you can use an ESDF setup. This frees up the W and A keys for use as hotkeys, and also helps in getting your hand back into position if needed since you just have to feel for the little notch on the keycap, like you would when positioning your hand for typing.
Great video! As others have said, nothing to apologize for with your English. I actually just got the left handed Naga. Glad I did. Sadly, only true left handed option I've found.
Adding to the chorus, your English is very good! Most of the things you seem to struggle with are things that a lot of native speakers struggle with (plurals, for instance XD ). Honestly, the few times you use an odd word here and there, as we know you are not a native speaker, it hardly registers. I think you should be very proud of your ESL skills! I never have any issues understanding what you're getting at when you're explaining some complicated stuff, and you sound excellently conversational. Also, thank you for all your videos. You have assisted me with adjusting my FFXIV quality of life a ton, between things like this, video settings, UI settings and more!
My Z (your Y) is always my jump back button if able. Something I don’t have to move for. X is always a knockback immunity. Funny how you mention muscle memory. 6 years ago I put Life Surge on mouse 5. Once I tried to change it. Didn’t go well :p Also don’t forget ‘grave’! The one left of number 1. It’s very close to WASD but I never see anyone use it. It’s my sprint and mount button with shift. Last thing: do you use strafe or regular sideways movement?
z,x, and c are useful keybinds if you have both mouse buttons set to move forward when you click them. I only have the three hotbar setup with 1-5 and z-b bound with the other bars bound with shift and alt to use the same numbers and letters. Every other menu can just be accessed from the bottom right menus. Your English is very good. You're very clear and explain things well.
Protip I learned in my hardcore raider days: Rebind WASD to RDFG. You'll always be able to find the hand position without looking because F (and J for that matter) have a little numpty on them that's used for 10-finger typing. Also you'll suddenly have access to a lot more useable buttons around your movement keys. Also 99% of keybind usage is muscle memory. Just do it and don't stress out about it. As you said, it'll come naturally with use.
I’ve done this. It give you q, t g v b z x 12345 and all of them modified with shift as well. Before you even consider an mmo mouse and any modifiers you bind to that. (Thinking the Logitech m600’s gshift being bound to ctrl or alt) This is the superior method.
As everyone else said, never apologize for your English. You are a great gift to a lot of players and your English is pretty flawless- better than most of us Americans :P
I set up my movement keys to be on ESDF which makes it possible to bind certain things on the keys left of it. Comes with the downside of sometimes pressing a random action when playing another game though (by pressing F to move to the right when in that game it would be on D) 😄
i would say that the fist thing one should think about when doing key-binding, is what priority an ability have. That should give you an indication on what key-bind you need for it. The highest priority ability for any given role, should be the easiest to access. But you also in the same way need to think about how frequently are u pressing an ability. The most frequent abilities should also be easily accessed. Because if you do not have a comfortable key-bind for a frequently used ability, you can actually develop carpal tunnel syndrome.
7:56 can someone tell me how to set up those hotbars that just pop up and disappear like he does there? I mean the ones that popped up above his HP bar that he used to switch jobs. I would love to have that functionality for stuff that I don't use that often so it doesn't clutter my screen.
I have to admit, I got really lost when you started talking about the num stuff. Do you know of any guides to help learn the absolute basics of stuff like this for someone who’s new to PC gaming?
If you're new to FF or newer to mmo's in general a really helpful tip i was shown once was map out your maximum reach and then assign those keys as needed (I.e for me I use 1-6 qertyfg) Then simply bind new bars to "modifier" keys such as CTRL or shift, and then you have essentially 3/4 hot bars bound usable without moving your hands all over the keyboard
I have absolutely no idea why he is saying "im not good in english" i mean he speaks perfectly and very clearly confidently where is issue in his english :0 bruh you so good keep going dont worry
I used to play using both SHIFT and CTRL modifiers, but my little finger started hurting from having it constantly bent as I used it to alter between those two buttons. Now I use CTRL by leaning the edge of my palm on it, and SHIFT I've exchanged for ALT which I mapped to V through an amazing tool called AutoHotkey (you set it so that this script works only when you're in the game). Took a while to get used to pressing V with my thumb, but I haven't had any hand pain ever since, and I play just as fine. :)
Please don't apologize for your English. It's damn impressive and better than most Americans. Great video and thank you! Working on getting out of my noob movements.
On switching from WoW to FFXIV I've redone my bars a few times but I've settled on each bar being 4 buttons plus those buttons with modifiers. I'm pretty happy with this layout because with 4 bars I have enough options and follow some patterns like binding similar spells in different jobs to the same key but my one problem is that especially while leveling there are these huge gaps in my bars that I wish I could collapse.
on my mmo mouse, the buttons are assigned to F1-12 and thats where I keep my main attacking skills, then i have shift+F# for more attack skills and some system shortcuts, then I use 1, 2, 3, 4, Q, E, R, T, Z, X, C, V for buffing kinda skills, and then shift with the previous keys for other shortcuts like mounts and stuff and it works for me :)
Must depend a lot on hand size, I've always bound 6 and shift/ctrl 6 to situational stuff that doesn't need immediate use but I never had issues reaching there. Lately I bound shift w and it took a bit to get used to but since I always play with right click held and it's very natural for me to walk forward holding both mouse buttons I don't miss not being able to use W with shift being held.
With my MMO mouse, I set all the default F1-F12 bindings to 1 to =, and my mouse mimics F1-F12 and set my abilities/skills/spells to those. Having played games on console until recently, I find having all my movement/modifier buttons on the left hand and all the skills/ability buttons on the right hand so much easier
My tip is to take a look at some of the gaming keypads that are out there. I use a Razer Tartarus V2 and it's the main workhorse of my MMO set up. I can control character movement with the D-Pad on my thumb, meaning I have 20 keys to work with for abilities. I'm going to upgrade my set up soon and grab an MMO mouse. FFXIV is very ability-heavy so necessitates the use of both gaming mouse and keypad, imo. As someone who plays as a GNB main, I need access to all my mitigations at the click of a button. The idea would be for my mouse to handle all my mitigations and the keypad handles all my offensive abilities 😁.
i'm trying to figure if you cant have hotbar in one form in one location but then swap class and the same hotbar in a different location in a different shape other than the 1-4 tabs
As a xbox controller player on PC , i cannot do much about the layout but I have access to a lot of key allocation without hindering the screen much, it is very fun to switch from one key set to another :D
I actually use TFGH to move instead of WASD. i know this sounds weird, but hear me out: By using TFGH (my keyboard has a bump on the F and J key, which helps me always find it), i can not only use the keys 1-0 more comfortably, but i also use QWER, ASD, YXC as Hotbar keys. So f.e. i got my basic rotation on D, S, A and that allows me to use those with my pinky without having to move my fingers off TFGH. Then i use Z/Y and U, as well as JK as Hotbar keys again. Together with my Mouse i never have to use shift or ctrl for any skills, it just all fits on there and i can keep my fingers on TFGH almost all the time. It takes time to get used to ofc, but for FFXIV where i don't need to use shift to sprint, i don't care about that. Wouldn't use it for a shooter tho ofc. I am now ready for your comments ^^
Pro keybind: shift + space If you struggle to reach ctrl + x and you don't have a mmo mouse, bind ctrl/alt to the side buttons and you have unlocked tons of binds.
You mentioned that you use only Shift as a modifier because the other ones are uncomfortable - did you think about putting modifiers on your mouse's extra buttons? I love that as a solution.
I use the Roccat Nyth and a Razer Orbweaver keypad, it didn't took too long to get used to really. One thing that helped me a lot is having 1-2 Hotbars on the right side of your screen, representing your mouse, with 12 skills, so you have a visual guide
I've switched now to using ESDF for movement. I recently started learning touch typing after experiencing wrist pain from decades of typing from a WASD gamer position. It does take a few hours of adjustment to feel second nature, but I'm never going back. It opens up 'W' and 'A' for my pinky, and I get the little nub on 'F' to always be able to reset my hand without having to anchor my pinky off the side of the keyboard like I used to. Whatever works for people works for them, but you could do worse than give it a try, but maybe only when you're spending a lot of time not in combat and mistakes aren't life-and-death.
Just more proof we’re capable of anything. I learned typing before gaming, so I’ve always kept the home position, but still use wasd for movement with my pinky, ring, and middle finger lmao. I broke my friends brains when I told them that.
@@Vazik05 That's pretty interesting! I didn't even consider that method. if one keeps a light touch on the 'F' with their index finger, that means the anchoring finger isn't one used to move around. VERY interesting!
I've never been able to get used to standard keyboard bindings no matter how much I tried. Once I dived into using an MMO mouse I never looked back (Razer Naga > Corsair Scimitar > Roccat Nyth). After playing FFXIV for a while I decided to try out playing on a controller and now there's no going back.
Collapsing? Must find this video. I also tried binding stuff to Q and E and I had a hard time because I use strafe a lot. I had a real hard time with that. I ended up changing it back.
ESDF crew coming to tell you that you should check it out. It'll take you a week or two for it to feel as natural as WASD but it gives you access to a bunch more buttons.
Me, a random guy on the internet: I'm not even gonna finish the video before I, some guy that just found you through this video to figure out the "customization for hotbars when weapon is sheathed or drawn" toggles' meaning and use, tell you "It's fine, any non-native speaker of english has had this problem. And that's a lot of people." Don't worry about it. you'll get better eventually, and at your own unique pace :) P.S.: I have no clue if my questions will be answered in this video lol.
I didn't completely understand your question, but take your time with things like these and only adjust what you feel necessary. And Sheath/Unsheath's default Hotkey is Z on US Layout, or whatever is left to that key 😅
Mouse recommendation here from someone with extra big hands. I use the Logitech Hero G502. It only has 3 side buttons, but there are 2 buttons next to the left click (one is convenient to hit and one is not), plus the scroll wheel itself clicks left and right. So that's still 6 buttons I can hit easily, and with Shift that's an entire hot bar worth of keybinds there. I like using those for Hypercharge on MCH and Continuation on GNB since if I have to move during those windows I don't have to move my hand around.
I switched to red dragon and will probably never go back. The quality for the price is outstanding and especially the headphones I got for about 50 dollars blow me away.
I don't have an MMO mouse, but I do have a mouse with programmable buttons. What I've done is map CTRL, SHIFT, ALT, CTRL+SHIFT, CTRL+ALT to certain buttons on my mouse. This is useful because I can press the mapped button on my mouse, and then use my regular keybinds (with no modifiers)
I tend to hit Z (Y for you) with my 3rd finger, and X and C with index finger. It isn't a stretch at all and avoids the issue with not being able to hit W.
Actually well done video I got a mouse a while back and started to use the same tips you did. I Macro'd one of my keys to proc 2 of my skills at the same time like second wind and bloodbath. The other thing I did was try to use shift + 1-6 mouse buttons and mouse 1-6 buttons so you can put everything on your mouse lmfao just finished your video glad you recommended shift it's really good
I have trouble with hotkeys, so mine is minimalistic, requiring me to click a bunch of the skills I have 1-4 and Ctrl+1-Ctrl+4 then Mouse4 and Mouse5 (just 2 buttons on the side of the mouse) and that's it for hotkeys so a total of 10 hotkeys and everything else is clicked on
How do you seat the mouse (gloved pointing fingered hand} on the hud for kb/mouse like controller? With a hotkey of course. I want to move thru menus with the arrow keys and not touch the mouse for the quest tracker.
there's nothing wrong with speaking with an accent! anyone who thinks there is is stuck in the past. and/or they need to get off of their high horse. that said, your guides are always very helpful and easy to understand, even in the older videos where your accent is even thicker. your speech is so well-enunciated that it's almost impossible to not understand you, again save for maybe the odd sentence in older vids. that aside, i hadn't considered binding all of my mmo mouse side buttons to the num pad. think i'll have to commit to that once i can finally get my hands on a g604. can fit most of a combo on there.
Is it possible that when i press D i don't moonwalk backwards but i stead run backwards? I played ff xiv on ps3 and ps4 and now coming to pc it feels so clunky..
You only need a regular mouse IMO. Ctrl, alt and mouse wheel set to shift + alt then use shift key on your keyboard should give you access to ~7-8 hot bars using only 1-6 on the number row
Stop apologizing for your english. Its nearly perfect.
Wow thank you ❤

As a xbox controller player on PC , i cannot do much about the layout but I have access to a lot of key allocation without hindering the screen much, it is very fun to switch from one key set to another :D
I actually use TFGH to move instead of WASD. i know this sounds weird, but hear me out:
By using TFGH (my keyboard has a bump on the F and J key, which helps me always find it), i can not only use the keys 1-0 more comfortably, but i also use QWER, ASD, YXC as Hotbar keys.
So f.e. i got my basic rotation on D, S, A and that allows me to use those with my pinky without having to move my fingers off TFGH.
So many choices when it comes to Mouses, Mice, Mices. Nice
Pro keybind: shift + space
If you struggle to reach ctrl + x and you don't have a mmo mouse, bind ctrl/alt to the side buttons and you have unlocked tons of binds.
How did you bind that? It looks like I can only bind modifier keys as shift, alt, or ctrl
You mentioned that you use only Shift as a modifier because the other ones are uncomfortable - did you think about putting modifiers on your mouse's extra buttons? I love that as a solution.
This is what I do. I bind mouse 3 and mouse 4 to ctrl and alt. Works great!
I use the Roccat Nyth and a Razer Orbweaver keypad, it didn't took too long to get used to really. One thing that helped me a lot is having 1-2 Hotbars on the right side of your screen, representing your mouse, with 12 skills, so you have a visual guide
Is the keyboard and mouse you are using in this video the same and the set up you have in your description?
Yes, I agree they made quite the comfortable bidding keys to the controller and also the way you switch configuration is so good.
Sweet ty going to get an MMO mouse today! Those buttons on the side is what I need. Haha now I’m really excited to play today!
I have used the first 2 but i still prefer my old g600 to this too bad it is discontinued.
Collapsing? Must find this video. I also tried binding stuff to Q and E and I had a hard time because I use strafe a lot. I had a real hard time with that. I ended up changing it back.
I use the legacy option for movement, so basically I just use W and the mouse. So I've got Q, E, and A, D bound to skills. S is still for going back.
@@wedredding I'll have to check it out. I've seen it as an option but have never tried it.
I swapped A and D to strafe instead of rotation, helped me a lot. Right click rotation made the default setup redundant imo
Thank you! So very helpful, I will try only shift key modifier and num pad remapping on my mouse
Can you also show the control, of the 1-12 buttons, your mouse?
For a sec I thought this was an old video and was gonna pass it until I saw it again in my sub feed lol
ESDF crew coming to tell you that you should check it out. It'll take you a week or two for it to feel as natural as WASD but it gives you access to a bunch more buttons.
If your using an MMO mouse with a numpad of 1-0 and - ,= you can set your hotbars that use that to 3X4 to mimic the layout of the buttons.
Your English is pretty good. I can
understand you without any issue.
Grooving cat emote to the brinstar theme playing
Me, a random guy on the internet:
I'm not even gonna finish the video before I, some guy that just found you through this video to figure out the "customization for hotbars when weapon is sheathed or drawn" toggles' meaning and use, tell you "It's fine, any non-native speaker of english has had this problem. And that's a lot of people."
Don't worry about it. you'll get better eventually, and at your own unique pace :)
P.S.: I have no clue if my questions will be answered in this video lol.
Your English is better than most US speakers.
I have to ask what is the magnifying glass do? Thats the only one you didnt hover over and curiosity has me :)
That's the proper way to hit that key.
Damn man his non scripted talking is kinda cute....
#nohomo
I gotta ask what is that chest piece for you pally ?
I only speak 1 language and you speak more clearly then I do...
Mine is almost identical to yours but with my twist. Very good guide.
Actually well done video I got a mouse a while back and started to use the same tips you did. I Macro'd one of my keys to proc 2 of my skills at the same time like second wind and bloodbath. The other thing I did was try to use shift + 1-6 mouse buttons and mouse 1-6 buttons so you can put everything on your mouse lmfao just finished your video glad you recommended shift it's really good
I can recommend to change wasd to esdf, that way you can use the buttons aqw for skills as well.
I have trouble with hotkeys, so mine is minimalistic, requiring me to click a bunch of the skills
I have 1-4 and Ctrl+1-Ctrl+4 then Mouse4 and Mouse5 (just 2 buttons on the side of the mouse) and that's it for hotkeys
so a total of 10 hotkeys and everything else is clicked on
How do you seat the mouse (gloved pointing fingered hand} on the hud for kb/mouse like controller?
With a hotkey of course. I want to move thru menus with the arrow keys and not touch the mouse for the quest tracker.
How do I remove the item details they seem to get in the way during dungeons
what 65% keyboard is that at 6:22 ?
can you make your spells "mouse over" instead of clicking on each target?
Do those bracelets you're wearing have any significance or are they purely stylistic? Just curious!
Very good and informative video, tyvm :)
Hell yah brainstar
there's nothing wrong with speaking with an accent! anyone who thinks there is is stuck in the past. and/or they need to get off of their high horse. that said, your guides are always very helpful and easy to understand, even in the older videos where your accent is even thicker. your speech is so well-enunciated that it's almost impossible to not understand you, again save for maybe the odd sentence in older vids.
that aside, i hadn't considered binding all of my mmo mouse side buttons to the num pad. think i'll have to commit to that once i can finally get my hands on a g604. can fit most of a combo on there.
Can you give advice on ul hud set up for doing multiple jobs. Want to start an alt but afraid of messing up hud ul for original job. On a controller.
is there something wrong with me if I can't use keyboard and mouse and can only do controller?
One year later and your English is nearly perfect
Wow thank you !
what that square-number on your hotbar?
can you use your mouse to buttons to move your character instead of WASD?
Is it possible that when i press D i don't moonwalk backwards but i stead run backwards?
I played ff xiv on ps3 and ps4 and now coming to pc it feels so clunky..
You only need a regular mouse IMO. Ctrl, alt and mouse wheel set to shift + alt then use shift key on your keyboard should give you access to ~7-8 hot bars using only 1-6 on the number row
Super Metroid background music for the win!
1, Q, Shift+Q? This man is insane take him to Arkham Asylum now!
I have two hot bars, 4 rows of three vertically side by side to mimic the buttons of the mmo mouse. Makes developing the muscle memory much quicker.
