    I've been cooking my corn in the microwave with the husk in place, and then I cut the bottom off , hold the ear by the silk, and shake the ear out. No silk left on the corn. Perfect!

    I just learned that okra is good for detoxifying mycotoxins from mold and infections, so that’s a good reason to plant more. I’ll try to pickle them this year too. I also put in the flower bed because they bring humming birds!

    My family raised sweet potatoes for resale when I was a kid. We had a "setter" (I've seen modern versions online) that set the plants after we placed them in a clip that carried them down to the ground level and laid them in the furrow. It would plant them sideways like you were illustrating.

    Put your corn cobs submerged in water in a pot, turn the heat on medium and when a rolling boil begins, set your timer 2 minutes. Then shut it down and take them out to rest a bit. Those kernels will be some of the most tender, plump kernels you had.

    The wife and I love your videos and have learned a great deal for use in our garden. One thing we have wondered. In several of the videos it's obvious you are using some type of powered tiller. You mentioned you don't have a tractor but what type tiller do you use? Do you have any recommendations for the serious gardener on what brand of tiller is best? Thanks Gary and Jane

    • @gardeningwithhoss
      @gardeningwithhoss  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      We have three tillers that we will use between both our gardens. We have an old Troy-Bilt Horse tiller that we've had for a while and even had to replace the motor. It works well, but has some mechanical issues from time to time. We also have a Grillo and a BCS. Both of those are highly-recommended if you're looking at getting a new one.

    I've been taking your suggestion and spraying once a week alternating neem oil and spinosad. This has been great for controlling most insects in my garden (I've only smashed 4 bean beetles and two 'tater bugs!) However, this last spray, just as I finished, a sweet little thunderstorm slid right over the mountain and we has a short shower. Should I spray again? When?

  • @mikehenderson7170
    @mikehenderson7170 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Sprayed my sweet corn 3 times during the growing season with spinosad. Found one ear worm in 250 ears of corn, not bad at all. I am a firm believer in that stuff, but one thing I would suggest, don"t spray it during the Heat of the day, got a little leaf burn that was my bad I knew better.

    Love the timing on the sweet potatoes. I put in o'henry a few weeks ago and they're finally starting to vine out. They showed up really rough looking. A bit of light fertilizer water mix, a 30min soak and the grow tent kept them alive. I put in most and kept a few of the weaker ones just in case. A couple I planted died off and I was able to use the backups. Zone 9b (mojave desert) they sit in the sunniest hottest part of the yard and don't seem to care. Not much bug pressure on em. I water midway through day when soil temps get over 95. Seems to work...on everything. Question...my sweet corn is between 3-4ft and some is starting to tassel. Its taken a heat beating. (Proir to discovering soil temps were hitting 110+. when air temp hits 100 soil can get to 140 without shade or watering) Peaches n cream and temptress. Will they continue to grow or...should I take the loss and replant? Installing shade cloth this weekend which will help with my soil temps.

    • @gardeningwithhoss
      @gardeningwithhoss  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When temperatures warm, it will usually tassle at a shorter height. Wait and see if you get some production, then you can replant if unsatifsactory.

      @@gardeningwithhoss I've hit em with a bit of water soluable NPK. No noticeable boost yet but they do seem healthier.. Did a little looking as I wasn't sure what the side shoots were. Growing up with only field corn for experience it seemed odd. But, 2 tillers on every stalk. Tillers are as large as the main stalk. Seems healthy..thick tiller stalk good leaf nodes. After some reading, it's normal in sweet corn and not detrimental to the plant. Though tillers don't often produce a marketable ear ill take the added leaf coverage. Now...to see how they do with the incoming 7 days of 104+ starting this week and if shade cloth can make the difference.

      @@gardeningwithhoss I've been wondering how to use my double wheel hoe (I've got sweeps, the double plow, cultivator teeth, and oscillating hoes, along with a spreader bar set) to make a raised seed bed to plant say, beets, lettuce, etc. Those carved out raised beds.

    • @gardeningwithhoss
      @gardeningwithhoss  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Use a single plow to mark the elevated bed on both sides. Then use a rake to build them up further.

    How do continue to get seedless and pollenless plants. Such as seedless watermelon or your procut sunflower.

    • @gardeningwithhoss
      @gardeningwithhoss  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Seedless watermelons are grown by planting a "seedless" variety and a "pollinator" variety in the same plot. ProCut sunflowers are hybrids created by crossing other varieties.

      Not at all. You could probably plant them as late as August and still be fine.

      Btw...im in Nebraska and grow mostly in compost from a small local company. Im composting but not to the needed scale.

    • @gardeningwithhoss
      @gardeningwithhoss  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends on what's in the compost. If it's manure-based, it may be too much. If it's just from leaves, grass clippings or food scraps, you should be fine.

    Hey enjoyed the show. I have harvested my potatoes and want to grow sweet potatoes so from what you have said here tonight, I can plant in the same space. So after watching your tips, I went to your website to order some (I thought you had mentioned you had some in) but, I could not find them. Am I mistaken? Please do let me know. Thank you Kindly. We don't sell sweet potato slips. We got ours from Steele Plant Company, but they have since stopped shipping. You can still get them online from www.tatorman.com I believe.

      We've planted as late as the end of July here in south GA and did fine. They usually need at least 100 days of warm weather for a good crop.

  • @joeyblanchard4830
    @joeyblanchard4830 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    That is the problem with Florida weave. If you grow determinant with a big load of tomatoes the florida weave wont hold them up they will just colapse on themself. That is the exact reason I quit using it.

      It would have been fine had our wooden stakes not rotted. We probably shouldn't have tried to squeeze one more year from these stakes. On the row where we used new stakes, everything is holding well.

      Sweet potato slips are very resilient. Even if they have brown leaves and wilted, they will bounce back and do well once placed in the soil.
