I used Calif Blue Flax as a filler in a small home garden last Winter. Our Spring has been mild; so I harvest some seeds and it sets more. I like the thought of adding buckwheat to the mix now that we're getting hot. It's also a place I let my hens forage every few weeks, and it sounds like the buckwheat will please them as well.
Buckwheat is a great one for a small window to outpace the weeds.

Fish bone meal is a favorite for potassium. I think hilling helps keep moisture even too and helps prevent rot from water settling.
I planted a row of Covington and a row of Centennial sweet potato slips three weeks ago. Never grew these before. So far the Covington are 3 times the size and much greener than the Centennial. I also lost a few Centennials as I planted during that record breaking heat here in Savannah. But didn't loose a single Covington. So far they are much more vigorous. Thanks for recommending them.

The gold prize and zucchini I got from Hoss is putting on faster than I can pick it. Also my Cherokee Purple matters from Hoss are out growing all the others. The ones I planted last year came from the co-op and none of those made.

I have never been able to grow sweet corn in central Texas ... trying again this fall..

Green beans do better in early spring before it gets too hot. Truckers Favorite does great in the heat, but it is a field corn. But we'll plant fall corn late August so not too far away.

Either would do, but that Honey Select is some fine stuff! So that's why I'll grow it in the fall.

I love to cream truckers favorite and fry it!!! Greg have you ever had Merit Sweet Corn, it is less sweet than Silver Queen. I do not like the super sweets either.
Merit is a great old school variety. He might have been kidding when he said he didn't like it. He sure did eat a bunch of it!

I didn’t even think you could get that kind of corn because all I ever see is sweet. I was just thinking about that today. So glad I saw this. Immediately added Silver Queen to my list of my next order. I need to quit watching these videos or I am not going to have any money left to pay 💰 for water (bad well)to water all these crops lol.
Silver Queen is a very popular variety if you don't prefer the sweeter stuff.
Y'all this is probably a long shot but I'm going to ask since I can't get any information on a old variety that we grew back home in coffee and Covington county in Alabama and to describe it as a medium to smallish potato with a thicker skin and would often times ooze sticky sugar like sap. Seems like nothing compares to the sweet potatoes my grandmother had grown. Is there any one variety that may come to mind?

Usually plant fall corn in late August or early September.
I actually grew Peaches and Cream this year and I could taste the starch in it for sure. I loved the multiple ears on each stalk 2 or three was pretty cool so i will see what I do for next year but I am pretty curious about something just a bit sweeter
I finally know why my sweet potatoes didn’t make anything but vines last year. I’ve already planted mine this year but I ran and got some muriate of potash and applied it and watered in. So will they make this year????

Could you guys please go over fusarium wilt for the home gardener? It’s a huge issue for my tomatoes to the point where I want to just grow tomatoes in containers on my deck 😞.
The best corn I’ve ever eaten is New Jersey corn on the cob!!!

You never mentioned Murasaki sweet potatoes. They are delicious !!! To me they are by far the best tasting sweet potato available. Steele plant co. carries them.
We were mainly focusing on the orange ones. We've never tried any of the white flesh sweet potatoes, but we probably should.
@@gardeningwithhoss For the people that like the Murasaki's - we love them and prefer them over any other. But some people do not like them. I can't imagine why, but we are all different in our preferences. If you choose to try them you may want to grow a few to find out. If you like them you will most likely be hooked.

I loved the squash this year but the squash borers got them real good so I didnt get as long a harvest out of them as I would have gotten otherwise. What do I do about those?

I've heard to keep an eye on the plant and plunge a safety pin through the borer. Usually they are at the base of the stem to the root.
So when are the cultivations? At what times do you apply the fertilizers? 2 weeks after planning, 4 weeks after planning, a month after planning? Please advise. Thanks.

Greg do you know any of the Kennedy family in Covington county? I just bought 22 acres from my Grandmother in Sandford just North of Andalusia Alabama. Are Hoss Tools sold anywhere near there?

How do I lower ph level in really sandy soil. Bama here? I have a oh soil tester I put in ground. It’s reading 8+
Raising pH is easy with lime, lowering pH is tough. You basically have to "farm it off." Cover crops can help with that.
"Makingist" is definitely a word. At least it is here in Jack, Alabama. 🙂

The optimal planting time is when the soil temperature at planting depth is over 65°F in the spring and at least 150 days before anticipated 55°F soil temperature in the fall. Keep the beds weed free until the vines have covered the soil fully.

Sure. The commercial growers will mow them a few days before harvesting to make harvesting easier.

We just mow the sides of the sweet potato plot to keep them from getting into our other vegetable plants.
I grew merit corn but can't fine the seed
We have tried to find it also and can't.
Feed and seed guys told me there not going to have merit corn anymore I know one guy has it but I'm not paying 20 bucks a pound

Funny he don’t like it but he can’t keep that spoon out of his mouth !! I grew up on field corn ! What we called roasting ears. Cut scraped and fried !! I think sweet corn kernels aren’t big enough. You break a tooth biting in the cob ! It’s been 3 or 2 years since I planted corn !
