When he said "corn and watermelon are what the beginner with a small plot should...." my mouth flew open and I was about to fall out my chair, and then he finished with, "stay away from". Good advice! That was sure funny that I mistakenly thought he was gonna recommend corn and watermelons for a beginnerr with a small plot. LOL!!! Your back and forth talk show style is very fun to watch.
We have 5 4'x8' raised beds for veggies, 3 4'x8' raised beds for berries, and 8 fruit trees. The veggie beds allow us to grow 10 veggies that we like and we can rotate easily. The raised beds work for us as we have heavy clay soil in zone 7b central VA.

The best suggestion I’ve ever heard. I’ve been growing flowers for decades with the odd tomato plant thrown in. This year I have grand plans for growing ALL the vegetables I want and I’m making myself crazy trying to learn every detail of every type of veg. It’s overwhelming!! I only have about 150 total square feet and lots of health problems. When you said “just pick a few things and don’t try to grow every single thing” it was a wake up moment! If I just stick with tomatoes, onions, potatoes, some lettuce and a few things in a small raised bed it’ll be more successful then me trying to figure out how to grow corn and melons and on and on!! Thank you for this wise advice!!

I have a 20 x 30 in ground garden plus I do all my herbs and about 30 pepper plants in pots and grow bags. Family of 2 now but I give lots of goodies to my daughter and her family

Beginner gardener here west of Fort worth Texas. I have sand to grow in. The watermelons went crazy but my corn was horribly pathetic. Peanuts, black eyed peas, and other things did pretty good. The sand burs took over though and I gave up. I plan to use black plastic mulch or garden cover to keep the stickers down. I just placed an order with y'all. I should've watched this video first before ordering. :) thank y'all for the great videos and great info.

I have a 1500 square foot garden, a lot of alkali makes it challenging to grow very well. I am going to do containers this year and work on amending the soil. I have about 150 containers from 2 gallon to 10 gallon .

Great show and good advice. Start slow. I jumped right into sq foot gardening when I moved to the country in East Texas. It was a complete failure. Backed off and learned the basics. Five years later I am expanding and enjoying fresh veggies every day.

Love your videos - I started with a 20x20 and expanded this summer. I've got 40x55 covered in your daikon radishes right now. Can't wait to get that space going in the spring - working from home has given me more time (an hour extra without the commute!). I'm hoping to get some stuff put up. Would love a video on how you go about planning your garden. I used an excel spreadsheet this year figuring 1 cell for 1'x1' of space. interested to hear how you map out and keep track of your plan!

Great show as always! Is rotation of crops more, less or the same when planting in raised beds versus in ground gardens?
Same concept, just on a slightly different scale.
Something to consider in that "growing enough to feed yourself" scenario... What you plant makes a huge difference. If you're tight on space, you want to use as much of the space as possible for foods that are nutrient dense, particularly things that are calorie and protein dense. If it's a choice between space hogging, low nutrition, delicious cucumbers and more prosaic staples like grains or beans, choose the latter. Growing for survival really isn't exactly the same as what most people do with a backyard vegetable garden.
Storage is also something to take into consideration. While pumpkins, winter squash, or sweet potatoes may require more space, they store much easier and provide a long-term food source better than most crops.

Not really. Any of the products we sell can be mixed. I wouldn't mix multiple fungicides, but would simply alternate them weekly.
Hey Greg and Travis, thank you for the great advise and shows/videos. I have a question about wheel hoeing before a freeze. I live in north East Texas and will have our first real freeze tonight... about 27 degrees. I went ahead and hoed my onions, garlic and leeks today and then thought about the freeze tonight. Could this be a problem breaking the soil before a freeze. My plants are well watered following a day of light rain yesterday. So question is was it ok to hoe before a freeze?

Breaking the soil wouldn't be an issue, but drying the soil could be. Just make sure the soil is moist and you'll be fine.
Amen on when my corn is going to be ready. That was going to be my question, how do you know when the fall corn is ready? But that frittata is also good with leftover potatoes with the kale or spinach.
With corn, we wait until the silks turn brown. Seems like that is taking longer than usual this fall.
It’s a Satsuma Mandrin, and they are the best eatin mandarin and most cold hardy. We have 2 in the yard and eat on them around thanksgiving around here

Mine are still laying ... I put a rechargeable light on them nightly. It dies by about nine ...but that was almost summer ...I switch it out daily.
I am here for the knowledge and the southern accents and idioms. My dad is from W. Va. but was transferred to NY with his job when I was little and here I still am. The way you guys talk reminds me of my Dad so I get a kick out of it. Thanks guys.
We're just here to have a good time.
How much space. We have a family of four... I have a 5,000 sq ft garden (working hard to double that)... and it's a lot (too much to manage and still work... I'm 60, still have a full time job), but it's barely adequate for our family... and I supplement with probably 20 containers (20 gallon each). I spend a good bit of time "after hours" with a head lamp. Now I would have to admit in years past yield was not optimal, and my soils are poor. But in the past few years with paying close attention to what's said on this channel my yields and soil have gotten much better. But I have always approached our garden as a necessity, not a hobby. Our goal is always to feed ourselves, and give to others who can no longer garden... generally older folks, it's the right thing to do.
I now have two wheel hoes, and use drip... which is allowing me to manage a larger garden. I don't plan to actually use all 10,000 feet. I want to have 1/2 of it in cover crops and soil building at any given time. Want to set up a truly sustainable garden that my children can take over as they mature into adults, and I slow down.
Great plan. Can't abuse the garden soils too much, or they'll quit giving back.
Went ahead and made this for lunch with some of my collards, an onion and frozen peas. I think the peas were a nice touch.

Great and informative show as usual! Since I started watching Row by Row and Investing in Hoss tools and seeds oct 2019...4 plots (30 x 10, 130 x24, RB 12 x 4, 12 x 8) one used tiller(for the no-tiller advocates, I bought it just for status..lol) and built a 12 x 10 green house . My wife thinks I'm going crazy! 2020 was a bad year health-wise(covid and dbl pneumonia) so watch out '21 I think edible flowers are looming in my future!

I have a mix of raised beds and containers and will be migrating everything to raised beds next year. I'd like to add drip irrigation should I start with drip tape or your new container kit? Our drip kit is designed to water "rows" of plants, whereas the container kit is designed to water individual plants. Depends on what you need.
@@gardeningwithhoss Okay, Then I'm guessing a raised bed would be considered the same as a container, and drip tape should only be used on in ground gardens so the tape can be buried. First time trying to add irrigation.

We r going much larger . Usually we have a total of about 1500 sqft... We almost doubled the garden. But have planted numerous nut and fruit trees, grapes, and many berries .. we did 3 rotations, spring planting again in summer and then the fall garden.. we concentrated on trying to not have any one thing just come all off at once.. taters and winter squash being an exception since they store so easy..
That's a good plan. Spread out your harvesting so it's easier on you and the family.

This is my second year on my inground garden. It is about 30 x 30. I’m in zone seven Tennessee just do a Spring Garden would like to try some type of fall garden. When should I think about a cover crop and what type? or should I just move things around here by year?
Mid September is when you need to plant a fall cover crop.

Yes, the best way to use it is with the drip irrigation system. You'll put the injector above the filter/regulator.

Asian citrus psyllid is the bug that causes the greening. the fungal network of oak trees prevents it down in Florida. you can still grow citrus under an oak tree down here but thats about it haha

Satsumas are a type of mandarin orange. We ate a mess of them growing in South Alabama.
Hard not to eat a mess of them once you get started.

I agree with Greg 100%. Don't be planting with the notion of giving some away You will be disappointed. I live in zone 8. It gets hot. I have family and friends all over this area. When stuff gets ripe I say " come get all you want". I do not want to fess up that they are down right lazy. But proof is in the pudding. And that WIC card works real good in the grocery store. Some times I even pick it and haul it to an old ladie's house to give away. She finally comes to the door and says, "I don't want none today. Bring me some tomorrow". That sets my tail on fire to get home and put a bush hog in it.
For onion planting in the top of zone 7B, is it too late to start seeds indoors and transplant in dec/Jan?

I dont know why, but i can not grow a beet. Ive tried planting them in raised beds, in the ground, containers. Is there a special beet only fertilizer? Or too much nitrogen? i dont seem to have issues with other crops grown side by side. I do like beets..
They particularly like our MicroBoost. Beets need extra boron.

For your gynoecious cucumbers, can you just plant a few in the same area as a normal kind for pollinating? I don’t have the room or need for half a packet of plants but I’ve heard y’all rave about some of these all last summer and I’d love to try one.
If you have some open-pollinated cucumber seeds on hand, you can plant a few of them along with the gynoecious ones. The gynoecious packets contain 10-12% pollenizer seeds, but they look the same as the other seeds.

If you like mimosas fir Sunday brunch, try making them with satsuma juice. Unbelievable. all six of my satsumas put out this year. I suppose I could charge, but I let all the neighbors pick what they want.

I started some beets and moved them.into the raised bed. My beets are always leggy...super floppy and leggy. In the grow tent I have a fan on the trays and grow light only 12in above the trays on a 6am-6pm timer. Is there any other tip to prevent them from getting leggy and floppy? I grew a small seedless watermelon this spring and I mislabeled the pollinator/seedless had a whole bunch of flowers...not many fruits. It worked out...and my first oops in messing up the labels. My spring run of pole beans flopped...it turned hot to early and the blossoms didn't hold. (9b mojave desert) Fall did better and I swapped to rattlesnake beans. Scarlett emperor was a lovely plant...but absolutely unproductive. sweet potatoes did outstanding and going to grow 2 varieties this spring. Halo canary melon was my best melon this year, mid summer start and still produced after getting hammered by spider mites. Best tasting and still have a couple (a month post harvest) and still holding up well.
Gotta keep that light right above the plant leaves.

I’m going to break ground on a new plot next year. I’m considering planting cover crops and tarping, and waiting until fall to plant vegetables. I’ve never had an in-ground garden before and am nervous about it. Am I being too cautious?
Maybe a little. If you can get your hands on some compost, apply a heavy load of of that and just start growing.
Be extremely careful with manure sources Aminopyralid will reck your garden for a long long time. Its sold under Grazon by dow terrible crap chemical.
I have a Satsuma in a pot and have grown it for 5+ years. The oranges are delicious. I'm located off of I20 between ATL and AUG and I bring it inside once the temps hit in the low 30s. This year, it's still sitting outside...

Is it true that Vidalia onions can only come from Vidalia?
You can technically only market them using the name "Vidalia" if they are grown in Vidalia, GA. But we can grow the same onions an hour or so south and they taste just the same.
I want to pass along a trick told to me from my papaw 45 years ago about watermelon. (You may know this) but here it is . He said when your watermelon is about 2 to 3 weeks of picking take a baby food jar and in the lid put a very small hole in the lid and fill the jar with water and add one to two teaspoon of sugar into the water then take white cotton thread and run it thru the lid into the sugar water and tie a knot in it so the thread won’t pull out and the length of the other end of the thread will be determine how close you can get your jar to the melon, then put a needle on the thread and punch it thru the stem close to the melon and pull the thread thru the stem and in couple weeks the melon will pull the sugar water into the melon .

The goal of any TH-cam channel is to maximize watch time. That's why we all use catchy titles and most creators are making longer videos. If we made it easy for folks to skip around the videos, we would lose watch time and shoot ourselves in the foot so to speak.

No. We don't believe in that nonsense. There's no scientific evidence to support zodiac signs or planting by the moon.

When we bought it, she said she had juiced it about a week ago. And it's still good. So it has kept for almost two weeks so far. It was partially frozen when we bought it though.

It's an inside joke from a show we did earlier this year. We were referring to the "traveling asphalt crooks" that frequent our area certain times of the year. And one of our viewers informed us that it was considered a racial slur in some circles. So we use a "cautious sarcasm" when it comes to that term.

One thing in y'all's calculation that y'all aren't taking into consideration, most people who want to self subsist off of their garden, not only need to grow what they need to eat, but they also need to grow the seed crop for next year. That's when it gets really complicated.

Not at all. But apparently, using that term to describe the "traveling crooks" that frequent this region is considered a racial slur. We were informed this by a viewer earlier this year. So anytime that word appears, we tend to use some sarcastic caution.
