I bought some organic Japanese sweet potatoes from Whole Foods. They are pretty small in diameter, so I was able to cut them in halves and dangle them in small jars filled with water. It's been about 2 weeks, and out of 8 jars, only 2 jars have grown tall leaves and stems. The other 3 have just started growing some steams. Thank you for the video. Can't wait to start cutting the vines in a few weeks.
The great thing about doing it this way instead of putting the potato in a glass of water was I could eat the potato when I pulled all the slips off of it. Basically zero cost and zero waste.
Hi Gary. When we grow sprouts, about 2 inches is cut from the tops. This way, we get to enjoy the potato and get shots later for transplanting. Love the video.
Talk about perfect timing! I took a couple of my sweet potatoes from the bin last week and put them in soil to make slips after perusing several TH-cam vids. But later also saw recommendations to use organic sweet potatoes to make slips (because they haven't been sprayed with anti-sprouting hormones). So now the sweets I planted have been washed and returned to the bin (no worse for wear) and replaced with a couple of organic sweets. I am in Maryland also, Annapolis, which is apparently now zone 7B although we used to be 7A if I remember correctly. Very much looking forward to growing them at home because the organic offerings locally are WAY more spendy than non-organic sweets. Plus the vines are so pretty. Might be planting them in the front yard.
Thank you for this. This is my first year growing sweet potatoes. I've got slips in water but didn't know how long to leave in water and whether to add a pinch of fertilizer. I've gotten important helpful gardening tips from your channel.

I just started attempting to grow some slips. I wish I had of started earlier. I just put mines in potting soil. My slips are not long enough to put in water yet. Love the tips for propagating. 👍😀🌻🌱😍🌼🌷😎
This year I tried the dirt method as well. This has been the best for me, no rotting sweet potato or dead vines. The only thing I did different from you was that I added a bit of dirt on top of the potato. This will be my go to method from now on. Thanks for the fertilizer tip!

The problem i was having was the leaves left in the water to long was looking like they needed nutrients last year and I did add some fertilizer but they were dying. What I started doing was potting them in potting mix I figured the ones you get from the store be in seed trays. So im doing a little test to see if the ones I pot up do better then the ones I leave in water . Your video gives me the amount of fertilizer I should be using versus me trying to guess thank you. I did the soil verses water last year they were about the same well this year I did it the same and the potatoes I have in water have roots but no vines while the one in soil has given more then ill need for my garden. Oh and my ginger is looking good so thanks for that video last I just put in a flower pot and it grew then died but I think doing it your way was the key they've been potted up and are looking good being taken in and out to get use to the sun. Sorry so long one question what should my night temps be before I plant out my warn weather plants. Im at my frost free days just still got night temps in 40s but a couple in 30s I was waiting for a week with 50s is that right I forget every year
I appreciate your videos so much 🙏 I was adding so much water to mine, & I managed to save a few. I’m surprised they’re actually growing. Next time, I’ll do better thanks to you.

I’m so glad you did this video. I haven’t grown them before. Another great and informative video! So I started mine just about 30 days ago and there are a couple of them that are 6 inches or longer. My question is the leaves are still pretty purple they look like they’re starting to get green but they are not nearly as green as yours. Is there anything I may be doing wrong?
I started mine this year three different ways I did one in water I ended up ditching that and just putting it in soil...I did one on its side in a container but because that took up so much space and I wanted to start more I did one in an 18 ounce cup vertically to save space and I was actually doing really really well and it’s putting off like I don’t know 12 Bud’s already once it got going on man you can’t stop this one so it’s a really cool thing to combine the cup and the soil and grow them up vertically if you have the vertical space and you don’t have the horizontal space

Hi Gary. I like the way you explained how to do things. I followed your instruction to try growing sweet potato slips and it's going well (a bit late but just for fun as I have a lot on my plate since last December and I'm late in most of my gardening chores this year). However, I noticed many tiny bumps on a couple leaves. I believe it's a pest but I can't determine which kind. I cut off the 2 that had a lot and cleaned all the other leaves and stems with a bit of castille soap in water with Qtips to be able to reach every little place and I isolated the potato with the slips so it doesn't spread to my seedlings. I took a picture that I could send you. Maybe you saw that before and could help me identify what's happening to my slips if you don't mind. Thank you for any help you can provide. :)
You should be able to see an insect, if not it is something else. I am not familiar with the bumps but I would buy and insect spray of your choice. A simple bottle and spray the leaves outside. If it is an insect that would take care of it. Thanks for your support and please visit.. Video was so helpful! I planted my potatoes in boiled seed starting mix back in January, the leave have gotten some sort of fungus I’m guessing on them, looks like sugar crystals, and then they eventually turn yellow and die, have you ever seen anything like this on sweet potatoes before? Wondering if it could be a nutrient deficiency since I had forgotten to feed with water soluble fertilizer, haven’t fed them at all until today

Denise, from recent reading I've seen the water method (balancing them in a container of water) takes a lot longer, and the soil method takes a lot shorter, like within a week if you keep them warm. I'm going with the soil method. If you can supply bottom heat that might help.
@@carolynblakeney966 I have the containers on heat mats and I put some Saran Wrap lightly over top to keep the humidity in the soil. Cross my fingers I see some shoots soon! 🤞🤞
@@denipar69 are they conventional sweets or organic? May not be an issue either way but I pulled my conventional sweet potatoes (because they weren't sprouting) and replaced them with organic. Sometimes the conventional sweets are treated with sprouting inhibitors.
Hey Gary! I may be a little too late, but I like experimenting. I’ve got a sweet potato that I held on to for a little too long, and it sprouted. No green leaves, so I went and stuck the whole potato on its side in our garden bed. I did make sure it’s shallow, and the sprout is not covered, but I covered the potato. Should I remove some of the dirt so it’s only halfway up the potato like you did? Or might it be okay shallowly covered fully?
So this was for indoors. I think outside that is fine to have it buried. Good luck. I didn't know about the water! I thought you just put a piece of potato in the dirt outside. This way you get to make sure they have nice roots before planting in ground. Not that I would've done that without coming here and searching for the best way to grow them. I'd rather be surprised now than right before I put a plan into action. The time to research is BEFORE finalizing a plan.

Good luck

I’m so glad you did this video. I haven’t grown them before. I started some sweet potatoes in water then on their side as you instructed in a previous video -but wasn’t sure what to do when they start sprouting (which some haven’t yet and I thought I must have messed up ). I’m glad to know I just need to be patient. Thank you so much!

Hi Gary! I put the sweet potato cuttings in water until they root like yours. but when I put them in potting soil, the leaves turned yellow and dried out. and now they grow very slowly
When it gets warm they should take off. They really like warmth.

Another great and informative video! So I started mine just about 30 days ago and there are a couple of them that are 6 inches or longer. My question is the leaves are still pretty purple they look like they’re starting to get green but they are not nearly as green as yours. Is there anything I may be doing wrong?
Can I use just regular sweet potatoes from the grocery store or use organic sweet potatoes? Thanks
Great tip. Thanks

That is is actually new to me so I dont know that is. Sorry

Thank you for the video. Very helpful. But I have a rookie question. Can a sweet potato slip with roots but with no leaf on it be salvaged?
I am not sure to be honest. In their if it roots it will keep growing and leaf.

Good luck.

Hi Gary! I started my sweet potatoes after watching your video a few months ago and they started growing vines famously until the aphids. I’m growing indoors...how could this have happened?
I brought peppers in to overwinter and must have brought aphids in
They just sneak in. Soapy water can kill them. The vine is pretty hardy too.

Hello everyone! I'm trying this out in London zone 8a, does anyone have any tips for this kind of climate? Also, my Covington sp slips are about 20cm long and been in soil for 3 weeks but the sp has started to shrivel. Has anyone else had this experience?
I havent. They dont like cold or frost. So the dont really take off till the soil is warm. Like 60 degrees F.

I put my green slips in water and the leaves quickly turn brown despite rooting. Ideas?
It can happen. Sometimes smaller cutting work better
