FRONT ROW to Passion & Madness: My First Match in Argentina at La Bombonera

- I can remember the first time I saw La Bombonera on television. I was 12 or 13 years old and my family had just gotten satellite TV for the first time. I spent most of my waking hours in our basement, watching matches from all over South America. But there was something about Boca, the blue and yellow shirts, the connection with Maradona, the asymmetry of La Bombonera, that really stuck in my memory.
So, of course when I was planning my trip to Argentina, La Bombonera occupied the top spot on my list of things to see and do!
And after knowing about the passion and intensity of Argentine football, and Boca Juniors in particular, for 15 years, I was SO EXCITED to finally experience it firsthand. Watching clips of Maradona, Riquelme, Martin Palermo, Tevez, there was always something magical about the confetti-covered, uniquely designed, and vibrant aura of La Bombonera, or "The Little Candy Box".
I was lucky to connect with Ignacio, one of a precious few tour organizers who could arrange tickets for me. Boca tickets are especially difficult to get because the number of "socios", or club members, far outnumbers the seats in the stadium. And, for this match against Racing Club de Avellaneda, a hated rival, it was even more of a challenge.
After meeting up with a group of fellow foreign football fans, grabbing some Boca gear to blend into the blue and yellow camouflage, and getting instructions from Ignacio about how to find the seats, I found myself....
IN THE FIRST F*%@*$ ROW!!! UNBELIEVABLE.
Totally unexpected and a dream come true. I still can't believe it.
Many people say it proudly and some say it reluctantly, but there really is something special about La Bombonera. Something about the colors, the banners, the songs, which all Argentine clubs have, but which "Bosteros" (Boca fans) do just a little bit differently.
And, sure, as a large club, there is plenty of marketing, commercialization, and some fans might be there just for the clout. High ticket prices exclude some of the most diehard fans, as is the case in much of the world nowadays. I am very grateful for the resources and access to get tickets for such a reputable match.
What I felt, what I saw, what I heard, was pure and authentic. And, well, beautiful. There's not many things in life that cause a party, a carnival, a reason to spread joy and excitement like a football match in Argentina.
After an intense match with 4 goals (I would say 6 because it was 4-2, but all the Boca fans around me mentioned, the opposition's 2 goals didn't count), I was pulsing with energy.
Amazed, exhausted, overwhelmed. Wild. Flashing back the memories of goals, tackles, Cavani walking the pitch just feet away from me.
When I got home my apartment, I found myself humming along to the songs I couldn't understand, their melodies bouncing over and over through my head. I found myself, like the 13 year old when he first discovered the madness and passion of Argentine football, literally jumping up and down in the middle of the night, (trying not to wake up my wife in the next room!). Humming and hopping and smiling and laughing at myself in the mirror, pulsating with the joy and stupidity that only this game can bring.
As you're reading this, you might think I sound a bit silly. A bit overly romantic. So, you might be asking, why? Why the hype?
Well, because Boca. Because of los Bosteros. Because of La Bombonera. Because Football.

Boca es mundial. Lo pude comprobar en todos lados donde estuve. Brasil, República Dominicana, Estados Unidos, Portugal, España, Francia, Italia, Alemania, Bélgica, Suiza, Luxemburgo y Países Bajos, en todos esos países anduve con la camiseta de Boca y la conocían. En Estraburgo fuí a ver un partido por Europa League entre Rácing de Estrasburgo y Eintracht Frankfurt y llevaba puesta la camiseta de Boca. Unos franceses me vieron y empezaron a gritarme Boca Boca Boca. Casi me muero 😄😄
