- Decided to do a comparison of the screens between these three devices. I have seen a lot of questions on-line about which of the options is best to play DS games.

The 3ds can also play ds games in the native resolution, you have both the big screen and small screen option. For the small screen just hold start while starting the game

@@L00p_ That would be impossible. LCD screens have a fixed resolution. So native DS res on a 3DS screen can't use all the pixels. Hence what @Yourivm refers to as "small screen option", which is really the native res option.

Incredibly helpful. Just got a used DSI XL for $70 with a charger and case. For some reason, the DS lite is usually selling for around the same price, or more. I guess we are all looking for that nostalgia so the price tag is raised right now. I'll eventually get a ds lite again, because it was my first ds. But very excited to get my hands on the big screen of the XL with a 1:1 ratio

5:35 And that’s one reason why the DSi XL is better than the New and Old 3DS XL. Shame on Nintendo for cheaping out on screens by putting TN screens on the XL models (I know some have IPS up/down or both IPS but still..) Nintendo scammed customers by putting the worse screens on the New 3DS without mentioning it on the packaging that it has TN down/up IPS down/up or both TN/IPS. You’d be very lucky if you get a dual IPS New 3DS XL.
What’s the difference between IPS and TN?
@@Ghostmanetx IPS has better colors, decent viewing angles where the image looks the same no matter wich side you look it at from and especially isn’t an eyesore compared to TN where the colors are washed out, image looks different from different angles and can give you an eyesore.
I have a DSi and a New 3DS XL. Running DS games on the DSi is much better, the image looks so crisp and clear, whereas in the N3DS XL, it looks pretty blurry

I'll stick with my DS Lite for DS collecting since I like the form factor and non-blurry screen more.
Here’s what has me on the fence, man: the New 3DS XL has this problem where if you unfold the screen all the way, it actually goes beyond 180 degrees and the screen tilts backwards a tiny bit. I have to use a grip that happens to inhibit the movement range so this doesn’t happen. Does the DSI XL also do this?

Doesn't your New 3DS XL click the top screen into place before reaching 180 degrees? Yes you can go past 180 but an inhibitor is already built-in. Perhaps it was just missing from yours?
Same thing with PC monitors. It's the reason why 1080p looks nice and sharp on a 1080p monitor, but looks horribly blurred on a 1440p/4K monitor.
Pretty sure 1080p isn’t bad at all on 4k because the pixels divide nicely or something
I just noticed: the 3ds XL has horizontal scanlines and the DSi XL has vertical scanlines.
Thanks for making this. I’ve always preferred playing Heartgold and Diamond on my ds lite to playing on the 3DS. Colors look more vibrant and pixel density prevents blurring like you mentioned
it's not the pixel density, it's that the games were made for the DS's resolution and don't scale well to the 3DS screen. native 3DS games of course look sharper
@@comradeuro4255 There's also a 1:1 mapping mode for DS games, which is much better, but there still is the difference in the fact that the 3DS has a left and right eye pixel for every game pixel and this supposedly makes DS games look slightly off.
i have a dsi, dsi xl, a 3ds and a new 3ds xl. and i gotta say ds games look sharp as fuck on all the ds handhelds. while native 3ds games all look blurry af! on all 3ds/2ds consoles. probably because of the 3d effect.
Just scored the mario dsi xl for $55 because the normal dsi was cramping my hand’s extremely excited to learn that ds games still look very good on the dsi xl

I bought the new 3ds xl and 2ds and i love them both ,but the xl is a little heavy and the 3d effect is stunning on monster hunter games.
Overall,the 2ds is lighter and good for long gaming sessions , screen colors are a little bit washed out but will look ok if you didn't try the new 3ds xl . The new 3ds xl is heavy and not suitable for long gaming hours , screen colors are way better, 3d effect is amazing but it is prone to hinge wobbling that affect the 3d effect if it wobbles even you maintain your head steady.
Both consoles are easy to jailbreak.
Dsi xl is the definitive way in my opinion. I love seeing those big and thick pixels

I have all the DS's in the ds 2ds and 3ds family. And out of all of them to play DS games on is the DSi XL. It looks absolutely great 👍playing regular ds games on a 3ds/3ds xl or 2ds xl is disgusting. Most of the colors aren't correct and it's a bit blurry-er. That's just my opinion/fact. If you are looking for one main system for everyday use. Then get either the 3ds xl or 2ds xl. That's just my recommendation.

The DSi XL is the best version if you only want to play Nintendo DS games and don’t really for the 3DS games.
I know you are comparing screens but I'd like to mention how much better it is to play certain games with the circle pad on the 3DS vs DSi.
Indeed. If it comes down to practicality i pick the 3ds, especially when you factor in the analog.
Analog on 3ds while playing ds games simulates the dpad buttons and it cannot be used to go to diagonal ways so it doesnt really matters

@@berkovy Using the circle pad for Super Mario 64 DS has always felt artificial to me. I much prefer using the d-pad, even on a 3DS, because I can actually control what inputs are being registered as opposed to being mentally "tricked" into thinking I'm going a certain direction on the circle pad, if that makes sense. Though that's probably attributed to my over-a-decade long history with this game. That's just me, I don't know who else feels this way.

i've spent the past week deciding whether to get a DSi XL to play MKDS on, because i already have a 3DS XL, but the DSi is said to be crisper - and this is exactly the sort of video i need to get a better idea of how the game looks in motion, so thanks!

The DSI XL is definitely the best way to play DS games by far they also all come with dual ips displays unlike the 3DS where it’s totally random if you get one or not.

For DS games - DSi, for 3DS games - 3DS.
Take DSi XL and New 3DS XL right away. Don't waste time on other revisions like me.
Great video, but I think you could have helped by having a N3DS and a DSi, as a lot of people (me included) don't like the size of the XL consoles. Also the build quality of DS consoles decreased with each console release (except for the first console to the DS lite). For example, the DS lite, DSi, and DSi XL feel far more sturdy and enjoyable to use than their 3DS counterparts. Also, the 3DS line has a massive issue with buttons breaking, I have had an A button stop working correctly without any damage to the console or the buttons contact pad, and many other people have reported the widespread breaknig of the L button. The best way to play DS games is either the DS lite, DSi, or DSi XL depending on if you want GBA support, size, and weight. While the only reason to go for the 3DS route is to have 3DS, DS, and GBA native game support, but the game install limit is set to 300 at a time. I personally prefer GBA and DS lite for GBA games, DS lite for DS games, and N3DS for 3DS games. But you can always play the games on an emulator on pc, or use the Wii U to play GBA and DS games, with the DS games on the Wii U being amazing to play due to the screen setup options on the Wii U (even if the gamepad has a trash battery life).
The O3ds was more popular than the XL (probably because it was released first) but the N3ds XL outsold the N3ds in every region. I think america only got the n3ds xl. So I think the focus on XL is somewhat justified although most people dont have dsi xl. I also dont like the mushy buttons for the DS lite but here im in the minority :) Never had problems with 3ds buttons breaking on my units, might be brittle plastic after some years?

The DSi XL is the defenetive way to play DS games and if I’m not mistaken also GBA games due to the screen perfectly matching the DS resolution and the fact that the screens on the DSi XL are always IPS tech. While only some New 3DS XL have IPS (top,bottom or both).
I'd like the DSi XL a lot more if it didn't have horrible image retention.

It's either stretched (2DS/3DS), blurry (2DS/3DS), too tiny (NDS Phat/Lite) or too dark (NDS Phat). The NDSi XL is the only right answer.
My GFs crappy old DS Lite seems to have a brighter and more vibrant picture than my DSi XL and it really bums me out. Kinda want a DS Lite or DSi now 😕

Yep the 3DS XL upscales the resolution, while the DSi displays in 'native' pixel resolution with no upscaling - therefore strictly for legacy DS games the DSi is sharper.
The blurring only affects the ds games wen playing on 3ds. If you play games that are made for the 3ds they look great
why does the new 3ds xl have a somewhat greenish tint?
My New 3DS XL has an IPS top screen, but my DS Lite, 3DS, 2DS, and New 2DS XL don't. Also, my DS Lite's hinge is kinda broken because the top screen can't stand up, but everything else works perfectly fine.

i noticed that the scanlines on the 3ds is horizontal. and on the DSXL its vertical or maybe the blur is apparent because the one on 3ds is not on interger scale

I just got the 25th mario anniversary Dsi XL with the whole original packagin, manuals, a shit ton of pens and a carrying case that fits my ds lite, the dsi xl and some cartridges at the same time for 125€
I have DS Lite, DSi XL, and New Nintendo 2DS XL. I notice that the 2DS XL without that parallax screen for 3D is a better experience for playing original DS games if one can't afford the DSi XL. And yes, playing some of the DS games with the circle pad is a game changer such as GTA Chinatown Wars.

@@sipahi61 I guess it depends on what you prefer. The DSi XL doubles the size of the images exactly, but looks pixelated, I say it reminds me of playing games on a CRT TV. The 3DS family, while they don't upscale exactly, do to me, appear to look better. I play my DS games on the 2DS XL more often than the DSi XL.

buy a DS Lite so you can play GBA Games.

buy a 3DS and get a R4DS
so you can play emulated GBA games as well 3ds games also!

Just recently got a DS lite, only because it came with Pokemon Soul Silver (paid €40 for both). Compared to my DSi XL from when i was a kid, it has worse screens (TN panels) and WAY worse speakers. Also, buttons on the XL are more clicky, but lites also feel good. The build quality is good on both but the XL just edges out. I recommend the XL if you only play DS games, otherwise the lite supports GBA cartridges.

Fun fact, with an sd card, you can indeed play GBA games on an XL. No slot 2 peripherals, but definitely GBA games

hey buddy as the DSi XL has lower pixel density than DS Lite while having same resolution / pixels of 256 x 192 isnt it blurry? and i think you can see pixels too. because 73 ppi of DSi XL is too small.
I have New 3DS XL , wouldnt DS games look better on it in native mode vs DSi X: as new 3ds xl has higher ppi even if DS games have black bars around them when playing in native mode?
No it’s not blurry. Only looks blurry if you jump to a 3ds, which cases less sharp edges
The 3ds will look rounded, both the ds and dsi will look sharp and you can see pixels more clearly

DSI XL easy for the pixel perfect ratio and IPS screens.
I found with lowest brightness setting the ds lite had brighter screens than dsi xl
I now own every model of DS / 3ds finally. I’ll be making an updated video this week when I get some free time.
As for your comment, could be that the spacing of the lighting more spread on xl

I had a regular dsi as a teenager, and I recently have been thinking of buying a 3ds to get back into Nintendo portable gaming. I went and checked my Mam’s house and found my old dsi and games, and it still worked but I wasn’t sure if it would be worth buying a newer ds anyway, to get newer technology. This video was very helpful, and I actually think I’m going to hold onto my dsi!

For solely ds gaming get the dsi XL. If you want to also play 3ds and are willing to install CFW, get a 3ds model

Don’t think so, but you can install 3DSident home brew and it tells you. It’s an easy to install lightweight home brew

You can likely see visually (hols it and an angle) however it you have custom firmware there is a software to check that

Some do, some don’t. It’s a roll of the dice. You can check if you have a modded 3ds. Otherwise you just have to eye it.
It's easy to check. Just do the Tilt Test. If when you tilt it to the side, and the image becomes washed out it's a TN, if you can still see it clearly it's an IPS. Also keep in mind you can have one IPS Screen and one TN Screen on either top or bottom.

3ds XL/3DS/2DS/DSi XL all use the same charger. The smaller DS (non 3d) use a different charger
