    Just starting video, buuuut I see these are very different cars. One is a true classic, drives like a classic, etc. The other crosses into "modern" territory. Perfectly amazing car, of course. I'd like them both. But if you can have only one, you have to decide what you're looking for.

    I know exactly what you mean. The F355 engine is a living breathing thing. I think as systems got more advanced, Ferrari's began to run perfectly all the time. That imperfection is what made them feel alive.

    Good to hear your opinions on this. I tested a Scuderia a year and a half ago as I was also thinking/ wondering if I should go nearer vs my 328 or 550.
    It was a great car, but I’m not ready to give up analog yet. Performance aside..
    So I went Testarossa instead..
    I’m surprised how beaten the interior was on that car.. Did Mr. Clapton scratch the centre consul so bad?
    Lol
    Keep your 308. You’d also regret it too!

    With the F430 you'll have a greater chance of arriving at your destination, it will also be comfier, faster, and quicker, and most certainly cause less headache and money drain, but, nah, I personally would go with my heart and pick the 308 any day. Especially after having spent a lot of time and cash to make it shine again. It's a heart thing - the 308 looks iconic and just fabulous, whereas the F430 is a bit of a meh in my eyes, one of my least favorite ones in terms of style. That 308 is beautiful and truly mechanical. Think of a near future when you're driving your everyday Muskmobile or equivalent; what car would you like in the garage as an antidote? And remember, speed is now academic; that 430 is dust beneath the dull chariot wheels of a model 3. Choose character.

  • @canucklehead0
    @canucklehead0 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Hey Jack, what are you looking for that makes you want to leave the 308? Is it more power, less fuss with the drivetrain, better handling? If the former two are the issue why not look at a Pantera, and the sluggish handling can be defeated with an better or uprate power steering unit. It would be a hugely less cost for maintenance, but a big up on power and you get the gated shifter. Or go the other way and step into the modern era front engine Ferrari 12 cyl. like a 456, or 550 Maranello even a 575? Maybe the cost step is a bit on the high side with the V12's I don't know, the last Prancing Horse I drove was a 348 in the early 90's and since my lower leg amputation a few years back I haven't been driving at all (mostly due to the cost of insurance here) and unless heavily modified I'd have to suffer with an Automatic anyway. Honestly though now that your 308 is sorted, why not enjoy it? It's still as quick as you need, relatively comfy and has that lovely gearbox! Doesn't Jay have a 550? I'd be smiling at the sorted 1972 DeTomaso Pantera in my garage right now if it were my money. Cheers Mate - Dave

    Nicely presented. I tend to view cars as modern, classic or “somewhere in between.” The 308 is now firmly in the classic category, as is your 964. The F430 is Ferrari’s old F1 gearbox, now superseded by DCT. I see the appeal of the F430, but at this point it’s old enough to need a lot of refurbishing, but will never be a classic like a 365 GTB/4, 246, etc. I keep trying to get excited about the styling, but it lacks the drama of the 308 or 355. You will also find common items like the headlamp assembly are no longer available. I would stick with the classics or go new.

    Always preferred the 488 to the 458, looks-wise. I think a more interesting successor to the 308 would be the much maligned 348, which apparently has very communicative steering. I know they have an ill-handling reputation but I think the later ones were improved in that respect. Another interesting choice would be a Mondial cabriolet: the world's only open top mid-engined four seater, ever. I would be interested in finding out if removing the roof really compromises it, given the fixed roof Mondials and GT4s benefit from a longer wheelbase compared to the two-seater 308 and are considered the better-handling cars.

    I, like you, much prefer the manual transmission as I find such cars more engaging to drive - as I don't necessarily crave the need to 'slam' gear changes when driving on public roads. There is no doubt that the paddle shift is quicker, so would be of great benefit if you are racing the car in long distance racing events where you are shifting gears thousands of times - however not so when cruising the car on relatively congested and speed limited public roads - where a gentle well executed shift is all that's required.
    It's interesting there is a business in the US, named EAG USA, that are fully engaged in performing manual conversions of the Ferrari F360, F430 and later F599s. The company was featured on Hoovies Garage approximately 4 months ago, where the operations manager stated they had circa 40 F360s/F430s and 12 F599 paddle shift Ferraris waiting for the manual gated conversion. Suffice to say, that you and I, that have a preference for manual transmissions are not alone.

    The 308 is classic but there is nothing wrong with a F430. Chain driven. Etc. But I’d have to go manual tho in USA those are crazy $$ there are places like EAG that can convert.
    You should also compare to a Lamborghini Gallardo. It is still semi rare for gated in the PreLP but findable. If you do tho I’d suggest 2006-2008 for the updated gearing and steering ratios. And LP G from 2009-2013 are in same $$ world as gated 430 due to rarity. But the PreLP is a solid car and gives some of the classic raw feel with a mix of modernity.

But from what you've said, a modern Ferrari won't be your thing. You like the feel of classic cars too much. You need a car with soul. As others have said, a 348 would be a great shout. Not crazy expensive and probably an opportunity for a series of repair videos that would hook more people into the channel and keep it growing. I don't think the 430 would provide that.

    Speaking of paddle shifters. If it's the reaching for the shifter you're (we're) missing, it think it should be possible to mount an electronic shifter, i.e one made for PC gaming, but of the high end type, and make it communicate like the paddles do. Of course it has to be done in a fully reversible way. Wouldn't necessarily try it for the first time on a Ferrari, though...

Anyways, on topic: The 430 is the last V8 mid-engined Ferrari i would consider, and better than the onces that came before it technically, but that said: My biggest love in this category is the 355, manual of course, and then i suppose the 360 manual. The 430 is very reasonably priced but parts are very expensive! Unless you are Scott@Ratarossa, but Jack is very handy too. I was considering the 430 but couldn’t stomach the servicing cost. Looked at the 360 as my brother has a Stradale, but the timing belt job alone is close to $3-5K. That’s if nothing major breaks. I bought a 4C instead which is cheap as chips to service! It’s not a 430 by any stretch of the imagination but still fun and looks fantastic.

    As you can see from my thumbnail, I have owned an F430 for many years, and it's a keeper. So I'm biased but offer can a few points. The steering is tyre sensitive and was always better on the original Michelins; for me Bridgestones grip more but lose some feeling. Second, the F430 had a significant update in mid-2008; in particular the F1 shift is noticeably better in the later cars than on your 2005(?) example. I personally didn't like the manual set-up and found the shift, pedal efforts and responses weren't as well harmonised as in the 360 and earlier tipos. Perhaps Ferrari didn't expect many takers; you are after all junking all the effort they put into honing the relationship of the shift with the engine, E-Diff and suspension, and 90% sold were indeed F1. Most 430s, and almost all from 2008, have ceramic brakes. The discs should last the life of the car with pad replacement every 20,000+ miles plus so they are not at all scary, and they also generate almost no brake dust. Last, your car like mine has the standard exhaust, but it sounds different. If you go for a Spider I promise there is no significant penalty in handling or performance and you will find out just how good these cars really sound!
    I also had a carb 308 for 12 years and loved it, but it was quite unreliable in comparison and of course prone to rust, which the F430 isn't. It also had numerous electrical issues and A/C that needed a re-gas every 9 months. On XWXs it was fun to 4-wheel drift and it did sound good. But carb 308s, all now at least 43 years old, now feel very 'classic' so you have to be ready for that.

    Bizarre styling analysis. 458 is apparently fussy and the 430 is clean. The 430 looks like it was backed into Halfords and the rear lights got mashed onto the body. It's awful, one of the ugliest, most graceless Ferraris ever.

    • @kasimirdenhertog3516
      @kasimirdenhertog3516 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds a bit harsh, but I do agree the F430 looks to me like it deviates from the Ferrari aesthetic. It looks like it has taken on McLaren styling cues. It also lacks a certain delicacy found in other designs. The 458 is for me a return to form with a sensual, dramatic look that’s purely Italian.
