    Cool trick with 35mm, learned from Leica school: With 35mm, the horizontal capture in landscape orientation is equal to the distance from the subject. If you are ten feet from a wall, the photo will have ten feet of the wall in the frame.
    Once you get this, you can do great hip shots without bringing the camera to the eye, and have pretty accurate framing.

      i’m going to have to keep this in mind! as someone who loves to shoot from the hip, i need to get a lot better at it. thanks for the advice man!

    • @benjones8977
      @benjones8977 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Why anybody does hipshots is beyond me? I always put my camera to my eye and take the shot. The key is to practice practice practice to be quick. You need to have your camera ready at all times, finger on the trigger or turning on the switch for power.
      My experience has been those shooting from the hip have very low percentages of success.

      @gutenbird 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@benjones8977 Sometimes it’s fun and also practical to hold your camera out away from your eye. It also can get people to become a bit more relaxed or playful. Also there are many situations where looking through the camera is not feasible. Also a surprise is nice sometimes as long as you know the camera is going to be in focus which is easier with a wide lens.

      Well I’ve looked at the difference in people photographs, the way I do it gives me a much higher percentage in a much better image.
      I believe the biggest factor is getting over the fear of taking pictures of people in public.

      @@doriyancoleman I had rented this lens once before and got one of my favorite pics with it then. Since buying I have enjoyed using it but honestly my photos are revealing my shortcomings as a photographer rather than that of the lens. 🥺 The much faster lens (my only other is the 18-55) has allowed me to get some very nice home videos at night that I simply could not get before. I like this lens for family and friends portraits a lot but still need to take figure out how best to take advantage of it on the street. But that is really a more general question I have as to where aperture should be when out and about.

    • @doriyancoleman
      @doriyancoleman  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      honestly, the more you fumble through it and shoot on the street, the more you’ll realize what you gravitate towards and how you’ll best utilize it. at least that’s how i learned 🤷🏾‍♂️

    Good observation, I don't shoot with a 35mm as of yet, but I understand the 50mm a little bit more doing street photography. Now I will rent a 35mm and keep in mind what you said and will be looking for these different

    Coming to this 3 years later, but really liked your explanations. A lot to absorb here. I really like how you put it. My prime of choice is a 35. I *did* just grab a 17-70 to see if it scratches my occasional "zoom in" need. But I *feel* like it'll be far less used compared to my 35. Before making that purchase, I hovered over the 50 for quite a while. I think I'm happy to stay at 35 OR use a zoom (depending on the project/plan). :)

    Doriyan, thank you so much for this wonderful tutorial. Can I ask, which 35mm lens do you use? And, more importantly, how close are you comfortable getting to your subjects?

    • @doriyancoleman

      You’re welcome! I’ve used various 35mm equivalent lenses from brands such as Fujifilm, Voigtlander and TTArtisan.
      I’m comfortable with getting close to subjects, but I prefer to keep a few feet of space

      @@doriyancoleman I used a 50mm back when I was doing street, regularly. Taking those extra 2 to 3 steps closer will be a challenge from the standpoint of crossing the comfort zone boundary. I think it's worth it, though. 35mm images make the viewer feel like they're in the scene. Thanks for taking the time to respond, Doriyan. All the best to you!

    35mm is only versatile in a different way to the 50mm. If I know I'm going to be working close up in a crowded environment, I use the 35mm for breadth of capture. But if I'm going to be in a sparser or quieter environment where I might want a close shot but may also see a scene on the other side of the road I can't reach in time, the extra reach of the 50 is priceless - especially with a lens as detailed as the Fuji 33mm (50mm equiv). Then I can take the shot, crop in and still have enough, where the 23mm/35mm would mean missing a usable shot. Love both, but the shooting environment and the mood I'm in will be decisive.

    One more question, does it make sense to have both lenses? A lot of people recommend 35/85 as a 2 lens combo if you don't want to collect two many lenses. 85mm kind of gives you the ability to isolate a single detail even more and a 35mm gives you an opportunity to capture more in the frame or gives you the opportunity to capture a scene in a tight space, where you wouldn't be able to with a 50mm.

    I’ve been trying to love my 35mm (x100f) because of it being somewhat discreet,
    but find myself mostly grabbing my xh1 or xt1 with the a 50mm (35 f2).
    I thinks it’s the compression I get from a 50mm that’s keeping me from truly loving
    the 35mm. But I really enjoy using the x100f. Actually more than any other camera.
    Would love a fixed lens 50mm.
    Anyway, great content! Subscribed.

      @doriyancoleman  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      i feel you, yeah the x100’s are small, but not nearly as ergonomic as something like the xh1. sometimes 50 speaks to you/people more than 35 as well.
      but thank you and welcome to the community 🙏🏾

    I've been struggling to enjoy the 35mm as a street photo lens. Feels neither wide enough nor tight enough. I'm really afraid of approaching people so I've been defaulting to a 28 or 50mm.
    Mostly because I've been shooting on the Sigma 18-35mm for a few years now and for some reason most of my shots are in the 18 or 35mm (aps-c). These days I use the Fuji 35mm f/2.
    Maybe I'll get a used 23mm prime and just torture myself for a few weeks to learn it lol

    • @doriyancoleman
      @doriyancoleman  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      very fair criticism. even in my own experiences sometimes i feel like “man, this is a master of none”, but usually it’s just me misjudging distances or being too impulsive.
      28 is definitely a true “street wide” and 50 a true “street telephoto”, both certainly strong for different styles imo. if you can get a cheap deal on the 23mm tho, definitely try it out. thing has a special place in my heart!

    35mm looks more normal, like photos look straight out of a phone - 50 imo works better for more minimal looking photos, plus less distortion, less weirder perspective - btw I just got the 50 1.2 gm. 50mm is no longer cheap lol.

    • @doriyancoleman
      @doriyancoleman  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      i can agree with that, the 28-40 range just looks natural. 50mm definitely makes me feel as though there’s something specific in the frame i want noticed.
      and yep, once you go past 1.8 your wallet is in trouble 😂
